Default Kiu Fung, Hui Juk, Deun Yu: actually few intersection points in their stories?

Would you say that the stories of the three protagonists of DGSD, Kiu Fung, Hui Juk, and Deun Yu, actually intersected each other very little in the overall story? The first part of DGSD was dominated by Deun Yu, and it was a long time before Kiu Fung showed up. After Kiu Fung debuted, his story overlapped with Deun Yu's only briefly before Deun disappeared from the story for a long time. Deun Yu reemerged concurrently with Hui Juk's debut, but then Deun Yu disappeared again while Hui Juk's story unfolded. Everybody finally got together at the Heroes' Conference at Shaolin, and then they all went to Hsi Hsia Kingdom together for the Hsi Hsia princess' betrothal contest. After that, I think everybody went their separate ways again until the end when Hui Juk and Deun Yu tried to rescue Kiu Fung from Liao emperor Yeh Lut Hung Gei's troops.

All in all, that's very little time that the three protagonists' stories actually intersected each other.

I never understood how their relationship was so great. They met each other a couple time at most. When QF first me XZ, it was the first time they met and yet QF treated him as brother at first sight. The relationship is just not very realistic to me.

In the novel, Duan Yu reappeared during Xuzhu's story for the Myriad Immortals Conference, which DGSD 1982 failed to capture mostly.

That was a pretty long reunion though, totaling about 6 chapters.

Was that the big chess (go) match or the SWORD GOD incident, or neither?

The latter. In the novel, Xuzhu's story took a break after the chess game, with Murong Fu and Duan Yu going into the Myriad Immortals Conference. Xuzhu came to the scene just in time to save Tianshan Tonglao (meeting Duan Yu again in the process). Then Xuzhu gets his adventure Part 2. Then he meets Duan Yu again for a very brief time after falling off a cliff. Then Xuzhu has his adventure Part 3. Then after Tianshan Tonglao and Li Qiushui died, Xuzhu came back to meet Duan Yu again -- thus leading to the famous scene when SWORD GOD inflicted a wound on Duan Yu's body.

Sound a bit fitful. In DGSD '81, Hui Juk's entire story from the chess match until the Myriad Immortals Conference all occurred in one continuous narrative, and Deun Yu bookended Hui Juk's story, but did not appear in the middle of it.

By comparison, Deun Yu's story intersected with Kiu Fung's from the time that they first met at that tavern until the time that Ah Chu decided to infiltrate Shaolin disguised as a monk; at that point, Deun Yu disappeared for a long time and the story became exclusively Kiu Fung's for an extended stretch.
