Default Railway Land in Singapore Belonging to Malaysia

I was reading the land swap between Singapore and Malaysia. I have a few questions:
    1. Anyone can tell me how did these pieces of land belong to Malaysia?
    2. Were they sold to Malaysia? If so, at what price?
    3. Why is it difficult to buy back these pieces of land from Malaysia?

The land on which Tanjong Pagar railway station and the Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) or Malayan Railways Limited railway tracks in Singapore are situated is held by KTM on a 999-year lease.
