All the group singing in this series is just sooo LAME!!! the old HZGG singing did not come out feeling boring and cheesy...but this version with Benji singing and doing some kind of Broadway musical move was just STUPID!!! I couldn't stop cringing and had to fast forward...

Honestly, like most of you, I tried to be very very very patient with this series. But I am tearing my hair out at Benjamin + Broadway!!

Qiong Yao has lost it. I've always been very biased for anything HZGG (even HZGG3 I sat through) but this scene has killed everything. I'm done! Urgghhhh

You should just skip the rest of part 1 and come back for part 2 when YQ finally confesses to XYZ....Part 1 is completely full of fluff and nonsense! I'm not gonna give up on this series until I see my YQ/XYZ pairing!! I sat through 30 episodes of BS, i can do another 10!

Same. I feel like I'm getting a heart attack from anger watching where this drama is going.

The few scenes I've enjoyed are with Er Tai and Zi Wei with Er Kang because there hasn't been anything else enjoyable. And it's quite sad that these are the only scenes that hasn't made my heart ached. Er Tai's expressions and how he portrays his character is realistic and adorable. Although Zi Wei and are Er Kang are lovey dovey and sometimes I have to watch their scenes with a barf bag, but it's still a lot better than watching Benjamin benjamin, more benjamin ....and then out of nowhere orchestra singing. I didn't know the new remake was a musical.

lol same. With the damage QY has done to my heart, i need to watch that ONEEE scene of confession and reciprocation of affection from XYZ to YQ to amend my broken heart a little. Just 10 more eps right ? sigh.... i hope they don't break into song mid way through or else I'll google up chinese translator and march right up to QY's weibo. lol and she'll get my piece of mind in broken chinese...like my broken heart! lol

Anyone else think even the veteran actors can't save the script? The Empress and Grand Empress both are too kind. I feel sympathetic to them because they have a valid reason to be strict towards XYZ. Whereas the old HZGG Empress was out of her way evil. However, even though they seem kind, they then turn their backs and becomes crazily evil. Like the scene when Empress tortures ZW. That's not like her character up to that point... To me, she doesn't appear to be THAT evil. Same for RMM.

On a good note, I like Qing Er. Her actress fits her and she actually feels like a girl raised in the palace with the proper etiquette. So far, my favorite young actress in the series! Whenever she comes on screen, I want to watch. Haha!

I really really do not like XYZ at all. SHe's so spoiled and annoying.......and gets angry at the slightest thing.....can't she just stay out of trouble. and how does she bring joy? She brings more trouble in fact. She's really not endearing at all. I really don't blame the Empress for being angry with her. I can't see how come the rest of the people even like her.......the emperor, wuahge, benji.......its amazing how Erkang even puts up with her nonsense. bahhhh. she doesn't even listen to ZW!

On a more positive note, I think ZW's torture scene was done much better........it really impressed me......I could actually feel the pain and torture ZW actually went through......it was alot more milder in the older version.

There's more Zi Wei and Er Kang after she was tortured. ...I liked those scenes because Er Kang's crying and sadness was very convincing. Although I still had to watch the scene with a barf bag by my side, but considering the choices we've been given to enjoy, Zi Wei and Er Kang scenes are considered precious. Thank God benjamin doesn't pop out of nowhere and says some monotone lines in the midst of ZW/EK scenes. I don't have anything against Benji, I just think he's in the wrong show. Think Disney is still hiring....

I didn't really want to watch it but curiosity got the better of me. It's not awful but nothing great either.
Still, there's a genuine comaraderie in the show, especially between the men. That's the one thing going for it.
Poor Guybrush Threepwood... He was brought in to be the third spoke in a love triangle. Ho hum. Unfortunately they've made him ubiquitous and a hybrid foreigner version of Yong Qi and Er Kang. It makes him look like he's stealing screen time from those two guys.

Finally, the story is getting more exciting! Ep.34 (TV version) is probably the only episode so far I could sit through without the urge to fast forward. The secret southern tour of Qianlong has always been my favorite subplot in HZGG.

The series start off with us meeting our dear Zei Wei and Jin Suo on the streets looking anxiously towards the approaching Magistrate Liang and his many body guards. Xiao Yanzi, Liu Qing, Liu hong enters the scene running giddily on the streets until Xiao Yanzi notices the crowd and approaches closer to join in from curiously. Zi Wei, holding her belongings close to her side like the treasure it is (and we all know what she's holding) tells Jin Suo she's going to try to stop the guards so that she can meet Magistrate Liang. She runs off and Jin Suo follows .

The both run up and kneel on the streets blocking Magistrate Liang as Xian Yanzi watches with curiously from the side lines with the crowd. Xiao Yanzi is shocked to see that someone is blocking the Magistrate and turns to Liu Hong, asking if this is the same Magistate that caused the suicide of miss Zhou last year. Liu Hong confirms that it is and elaborates further that Magistrate's son, Liang Chong, wanted to make miss Zhou his concubine, forcing her into suicide by hanging. Liu Qing quickly looks over towards Xiao Yanzi and warns her to mind her own business as we can see Xiao Yanzi growing more curious and unsettled.

The guards run up tp Zei Wei and Jin Suo who are still on their knees and basically tells them to scram; This Magistrate doesn't deal with commoners (UGHH...isn't that your job?! ). And after a brief moment, with Zei Wei and Jin Suo still on their knees. unwilling to give up, the guards move forward to push the girls back. Xiao Yanzi, unable to attain herself any longer (and with Liu Qing being unable to grab hold of her) runs forward to defend Zi Wei and Jin Suo against the guards. (although they were pushing Zi Wei and Jin Suo like body guards of a celebrity towards potentially crazy fan girls, they didn't seem merciless or cruel. Just trying to push the girls back into the crowd so that the Magistrate can get through. But somehow Xiao Yanzi felt unjust and had to intervene with such passion. I think they should redo this scene for me and make the guards more cruel towards Zi Wei and Jin Suo so that I can understand Xiao Yanzi's frustration.)


Of course we already know how this scene is going to end. Magistrate Liang refuses to hear Zi Wei and Jin Suo, even going as far to calling them crazy and saying he has no time for such people. He orders his guards to get rid of "these crazy people" and now we get to see the guards going all out, full force pushing Zi Wei and Jin Suo out of the way. Using too much force,the guards knock to the Zi Wei and Jin Suo to the ground and Zi Wei drops her belongings in the process. Zi Wei uses her body to protect the luggage as she's still on the ground. Xiao Yanzi, Liu qing, Liu Hong then fights off the guards giving Jin Suo andd Zi Wei enough time to recover from their fall and watch in horror. Zi Wei, still determined to meet Magistrate Liang, attempts to run forward to try again when she's stopped by Jin Suo.


Angered and scared, Magistrate Liang orders the guards to "HIT HIT, HIT ALL THE PEOPLE STOPPING THE MAGISTRATE!" Now we see the guards being a lot more forceful and even injuring innocent speculaters who were unluckily only watching. Xiao Yanzi appears to be playing around with her guards who are unable to hit or attack her as she throws anything she runs into at them and running away. Until finally she yells for Liu Qing to come save her since she cannot beat all the guards. During meantime, Zi Wei is knocked to the ground again and further emphasizing her more vulnerable and weak character personality versus the more bold and hot tempered Xiao Yanzi. She's soon picked up by Liu Hong and brought away to safey. Now I am unsure if Liu Qing came to Xiao Yanzi's aid or not but the next scene is with him being beat to a pulp by the guards. ( Random thought : it's amazing how in movies the body can endure soooo much trauma. Wooden sticks at full force hitting here, there ,everywhere, knocking him a good five feet off the ground and he gets up with ONLY a bruise on the forehead. Hehe. makes me giggle. it's like this in every movie. ) Xiao Yanzi sees Liu Qing being beatened and comes running up throwing a dramatic kick. Both Liu Hong and Xiao Yanzi picks up Liu Qing whose now fallen on the ground (WHUHH?!! one kick got rid of ALLL those guards? where did they all gooo?!). Magistrate Liang scolds them for blocking his way but lets them go sourly stating they're lucky that he has more important affairs to handle today; or else they he would have taken their lives.


Next scene we see Xiao Yanzi still furious at the unjustice; Zi Wei still determined, says she has to try again as she has something important she has to tell him and he must listen to her story. They introduce themselves to one another and Xiao Yanzi tells Zi Wei magistrate Liang will be holding his 50th birthday party and they can come as a guests to meet him.

Zi Wei and JIn Suo arrives at the party but afraid to enter since all the guests are so well dressed with lavish gifts superior to theirs.

From the distance, Zi wei and Jin Suo spots OLD Xiao yanzi and Liu Hong approaching and Zi wei notes that they are so bold. Xiao Yanzi gives Zi Wei and JIn Suo an opening to join her by calling them over to her side as if they were her servants.

They're greeted by Liang Chong who asks confusedly directly at Xiao Yanzi what her name is. Xiao Yanzi angerily hits him with her cane for not recognizing her and describes herself as "maternal aunt in law's maternal aunt's paternal uncle's wife" LMAO! Liang Chong plays along as if he recognizes her to not lose face and says "ohh! so madam Wulanala has arrived! welcome madam" (ahaha! how did he even buy that name ?!)


Xiao Yanzi tells Jin Suo and Zi Wei to go on to meet the Magistrate to do
what they must do. Zi Wei and magistrate find themselves in the lobby with him greeting his guests. (LMAO! The two guests that come up to greet him...are so .... sooo....sooo.... 'dead of life.' lol Did they come to a party to party ? ). Liang Chong takes an interest in Zi Wei after seeing her being pushed aside by Magistrate Liang and pulls her along by his side.

Meantime we see Xiao Yanzi, Liu Qing. Liu Hong being escorted to the gift room where all the gifts and treasures are kept. With one quick swift knock, they knock the servant out cold. Liu Qing Liu Liu Hong stand guard while Xiao Yanzi grabs as much as she can. Maybe their plan would have worked if Xiao Yanzi hadn't taken too long or if Liu Qing had knocked the servant harder, but he wakes up time to watch Xiao Yanzi stealing the goods and Yells for the guard.

And then...they fight. Fight fight. run. hit. knock. Fight. run. Repeat. lalalalala
All I remember is Liu Hong throws Liang Chong a few punches and then Xiao Yanzi knocks him cold with a vase. (This scene is the first indicator i am watching a comedy. he calls down with too much comedic expression.)

Xiao Yanzi jumps on the pretty decorated stage thingy. fight fight. kick kick. falling guards. jumping sparrows. ....In the midst of fighting, Xiao Yanzi drops some of the money she's carrying and decides to throw the rest of the money on the ground causing a huge crowd to swarm below to collect the money. .....then the Stage thingy falls down on top of the magistrate witn Xiao Yanzi gliding to safely on a rope.


They made it out safely. A silver thingy (i don't know what it's called, but it's money) falls from Xiao yanzi's pockets. YAYY! all that fighting paid off a little. They part ways after Xiao Yanzi advises Zi Wei and JIn Suo to find a new magistrate to help them. Zi Wei looks on as Xiao Yanzi Liu hong and Liu Qing runs off "what a carefree heroic woman."


Next scene Zi Wei and Jin Suo run into Xiao Yanzi Liu Qing Liu Hong performing on the streets for money with other misfortunate children. Zi Wei takes out money to give them even though Jin Suo tells her they dont have enough money to pay for a room. Zi Wei still gives the money, saying she can't restrain herself after seeing the children. Already we see how kind hearted and sweet Zi Wei's character is. Selfless, kind and loving whole and whole.

Liu Qing looks towards Zi Wei with appreciation and admiration ( it was sweet of her to give money but he didn't seem to look at anyone else that donated with those lovey eyes).
Unfortunately, she gets pick pocket and someone tries to steal her luggage. Thank god Xiao Yanzi spots this and they all give chase to the thief. Punch punch kick kick punch punch run run fight fight kick kick. luggage saved!

Zi Wei thanks Xiao Yanzi and says she cannot live without her luggage. Xiao yanzi is shocked to find out that she gave such a dramatic chase, using so much energy just for a portrait but Jin Suo confirms how important this is to Zi Wei, more than life. Xiao Yanzi invites them back to their place and they all gayly walk home together. (AWWW! So sweet. such a big, happy family.)

Xiao Yanzi brings Zi Wei and Jin Suo into the house and they sit down to have a talk. Zi Wei tells Xiao Yanzi how her mom deceased and she was forced out of her hometown and currently in search of her father. Xiao Yanzi is shocked to hear the hardship they went through and even more shocked to find out it took them half a year to get to Beijing. Zi Wei explains that she has poor health and was repeatedly sick during their journey. After finding out about their financial woes, Xiao Yanzi invites Zi Wei and JIn Suo to move in with her.

Next we get a glimpes from back view to front of the FIRST man to enter Xiao Yanzi's life. (SIGH....my heart breal begins ....HERE!).

He watches and draws her from afar as she performs to entertain the crowd. Xiao Yanzi spots a (tall, white man in ancient china wearing disney land costume, obviously harboring a huge wig fetish (doesn't even look like hay, let alone hair. They need to give him a more realistic look))) drawing her in the distance and looks curiously at him. (maybe she's wondering if he got lost and entered this drama by accident. She's probably thinking same thing i am thinking "DUDE! Disney princesses are waiting for you man. What you doing here?!")


Thoughts: I didn't like nor did I dislike this episode. Nothing much left an impression on me, but nothing annoyed me either. Though during the original HZGG, I have to admit, intrigued me more and lured me more into the drama . Ruby's gentleness & innocence and Zhao Wei's mischievous portrayal of her characters was just soo...soo perfect..right from the start. Like yin to yang, black to white. But even so, the original ep 1 wasn't a very memorable episode for me either.

Episode 36 is the End of Season 1 for the DVD version.
