    Wing Bu = Never

    Fu = Father/Dad

Now rewatching as an adult and learning from discussions, Kangxi is probably crying because its sh*t advice!

    Wing Bu = Never

I might need to revise my views of Emperor Shunzi. He seemed to be a good man with the best intentions, but as a result of his experiences, didn't feel up to the task of being emperor, so left it to his son K'ang Hsi.

Kang Xi wasn't of age when Shunzhi left office, so the task of governing the country would have been left to Oboi and the other barons.

I've just noticed a departure from the novel in the 2008 adaptation. When does Hong Antong learn that Wei Xiaobao is Xiao Guizi?

Slightly off topic.. I found these at a little stall near my home today - just little diaries with the first half in diary format and the second half blank.

My wife asked "why do you want diaries? You don't use them". I said "just look at them and you'll know". She looked and gave me a blank look and said "So?". That kind of put paid to my thinking of getting a full set of eight (it was eight, wasn't it?) of the "42 Zhang Jing". At least the "Xiao Ao Jiang Hu" looks nice by itself. Just wish they were bigger and didn't have that plastic cover.

Did you notice anything unusual about the covers?

You mean the "42 Zhang Jing" copies? Nope. Must have been reprints after WXB had been done with them!

Lui Yau Wai played both the real *and* the phony princess dowager, though. The phony one was hostile to K'ang Hsi and Wai Siu Bo, but the real one was kind to them.

I've reached the Ng 3 Gwai part of the series, and this is the best part so far.

I used to think that the ultimate Ming-Ching trophy (besides the dynasty, of course) was winning Chan Yuen Yuen (Ah Ke's mom). Then I had to reconcile that level of beauty with Shang Tin Ngor.

It was hard trying to reconcile Kiki Sheung as Ah Ke too... that's what I really liked about DOMD 08 - Ah Ke was quite a looker there, although still not quite the prettiest of the lot.

I like Cherrie Ing, but, I don't find her a look on DOMD 08. In fact, I find her plain besides other girls. She has look better in other series/movies.

Ah Ke in DOMD98 and DOMD00 are better. They are more convincing has the prettiest girl in the lot.

Athena Chu was a fantastic choice in my opinion -- she was quite the sex goddess during my adolescent years

I love Athena Chu too, but I skipped that version. I absolutely detest Dicky Cheung in anything post-80s so if that's the adaptation then I probably will never get to watch Athena as Ah Ke.

Su Quan (Madame Hong) was hot in DOMD 2008.

*drool* yep! She and Fang Yi were my favourites. Zheng Rou was absolutely adorable, but not quite in the "hot" category.

She had that confidence which so many of the other girls lacked.

I really liked Shuang Er - she was so cute as a ghost!

Yup it was that version...one of the first series imo that really started to use hot, modern girls in wuxia. It was definitely the case where the ugliest of the wives in that adaption was better looking than the best of the 80's one .

My only comment about Dicky's version is to watch it if you know absolutely nothing about DOMD or really confused/hate the other versions. Its great eye candy and an entertaining story - if thought of as entirely different story.

If you like DOMD (book or other adaptations), you might be horrified by the rewrites.

That adaptation is a prime candidate for Ken's 'breaking the fourth wall' thread. As I recall, at the end, when WXB (who was the best fighter by then) stomped Feng Shifan, his last hit was 'for Jinyong'. When FSF asked 'Who is Jinyong?', WXB said 'you don't even know who Jinyong is, you really deserve beating' then killed him. Even the script-writers acknowledge how screwy that adaptation was.
