HONG KONG - THE story of Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu's surprise engagement is starting to resemble one of her idol dramas, with their rich young men and bossy mothers.
On Tuesday, NetEase news website said her Chinese fiance's mother paid off his ex-girlfriend, Chinese actress Kitty Zhang, who is an estranged protegee of Hong Kong comedian Stephen Chow.
Zhang, who made her movie debut in Chow's CJ7 in 2008, is now in a contract dispute with his company, Star Overseas. Businessman Wang Xiaofei had a volatile love affair with Zhang before his whirlwind romance with Hsu, the CJ star's former assistant told NetEase.
'Kitty Zhang's hot temper is known to industry insiders,' the source said. Weeks before Wang met Hsu on Sept 29, he still went shopping with Zhang in Hong Kong, the source added.
But the two broke up because he could not take her tantrums, and because his mother, restaurateur Zhang Lan, would not back his plan to bail Zhang out of her contract. 'Zhang Lan wouldn't pay for the court case but would only pay Little Zhang to leave Xiaofei. I heard she took 6 million yuan (S$1.2 million),' the source said.
After news of her ex-boyfriend's engagement broke last week, Zhang microblogged: 'My relationship with Wang Xiaofei is over. We broke up mainly because of personality differences.' Wang had a similar statement on his microblog, saying: 'We've separated for some time but we're still good friends.'
