Default Salad Days: best, easiest times for wuxia characters

To be a wuxia character is to live a life of constant peril, but there are relatively good, easy times too..."Salad Days," if you will.

I think the Salad Days of Gwok Jing and Wong Yung during their forty-something years together was immediately after they first met North Beggar Hung 7 Gung. They were young, had no immediate worries, and met a powerful and friendly martial arts expert who was willing to teach them his martial arts skills and share with them his great accumulated wulin wisdom. It also helped that Hung 7 Gung was an amusing and entertaining dude to hang around with, and supplied a great deal of amusement to go with the martial arts and wulin wisdom.

Those must have been good days.

Wouldn't their years on Peachflower Island apply a bit more? By this time nobody in the world could threaten them, they truly have no responsibilities except to enjoy each other's company, and they even wound up having a kid....so hard to imagine this sweet innocent couple finally doing the dirty

The Peach Blossom Island years might have been a bit boring (aside from the sex, of course). Life was stress-free during those years, but a bit unchallenging. They had each other, but meeting interesting new people and having interesting new encounters was out of the question.

Meeting Hung 7 Gung was probably a better period just because they were younger and not yet jaded from such experiences as the deaths of Gwok Jing's teachers and mother and the wars against the Jin and Mongols. The last part of LOCH took away much of Gwok Jing and Wong Yung's youthful innocence...a necessary part of their character development.

it might not be so boring as you implied. Every martial artist must have some quiet time to train and contemplate to improve their skills. 9 yin which GJ and HR are trainning probably took a lot of their time and consentration during those years. Figuring out and mastering martial arts of 9 yin caliber must be a very satisfying achievement on their own, at least for GJ.

One thing that could not have been much fun for Gwok Jing and Wong Yung during the "Peach Blossom Island Years" would have been having to constantly referee between East Heretic Wong Yerk See and Flying Bat Ohr Jen Ngok. We know those two old kooks couldn't have gotten along with each other more than five minutes at a time. How many times would you bet there were cases of near-domestic violence as Gwok Jing had to intercede to save his old teacher from his father-in-law's wrath?

That certainly couldn't be more fun/less stressful than listening to North Beggar Hung 7 Gung tell jokes and stories.

I thought HYS left the island almost immedietly after the marriage. Well, may be I am wrong, but I think the relationship between those two old man would be very stiff and formal. Minor squabel would be beneath them.

In addition YG's time of happiness probably his short 2 or 3 years time with xln in the tomb when he was a kid. I know you would probably make a bad comment or something, knowing that you hate that couple so much, but YG certainly is a poor kid.
