That's strange. Qing and Ching should be the same. I read on Julian Cheung's profile that he acted as Kangxi in The Ching Emperor. But TVB in the 1990s is not known to be authentic in their costumes. I remember watching an old series on Li Shi Min (Tang Dynasty founding emperor) - Michael Miu and Barbara Yung were dressed in Song.

Qing and Ching is the same. In a lot of the Hong Kong Qing dramas, many actors do not want to actually shave their head. So they don't. Instead they wear a hat... for as many scenes as they can. Or they just make their hairline look a bit higher than normal.

Costumes in Chinese dramas have always been pretty inaccurate. Designers loves to throw their own silly ideas into the design. I've seen stuff like fishnets, feathers, lace (?!) and zippers! Not to mention the hodge podge of dynasties thrown together into a single costume. Weird color combinations and patterns. I can rant about it all day.....
I'm a fairly big Hanfu enthusiast so the costumes in Chinese dramas always makes me cry. T_______T

Actually a lot of the older dramas and movies from the 80s and early 90s are more accurate than the stuff on TV now.
Qing/Ching dramas usually are the most accurate, though still riddled with inaccuracies. And... We shall not even bother with the rest of the dynasties..... Though the Han Dynasty has been getting a lot of love in recent years. I'm fairly happy about that.

However, because of a new Hanfu movement among the younger generation, there has been a larger interest in Hanfu. Thus there has been some huge improvements in costumes in these dramas and movies. But honestly, they've still got a long ways to go.

Are you referring to China, HK, or Taiwan? Can't say for China because I didn't watch them then, but certainly HK in the 80/90 appeared more dramatic/theatrical rather than than authentic (depending on one's definition of that word). One can see it in the type of materials used. I remember Angie Chiu Ah Chi in a version/derivative of Zu Mountain that liked its synthetic materials - I'm sure that was 80's if not pre-80's.

Of course, the costume delight came with 90's Justice Bao - the intricacy of embroidery was amazing, and attention to symbology notable (JB had four claws to differentiate the five claw dragon of imperial status).

There was a rave about Zhou Xun's 'Tang' look in LOCH...right up to the point someone actually posted on Baidu a painting of a Northern Song lady.

Out of interest Plushie, do you take note of period costume as a hobby or is it a focus in your studies? Costume has never been my particular cup of tea, but I have found it interesting since JB days. I lean more towards military (as if one can escape that) exploits, socio-cultural structures, a dab of technology and of course, medicine.

By the way, I appreciate the guys shaving their heads for the more authentic 'feel'. I do believe I read somewhere that the half shaved heads together with the [prayer] beads worn around the neck by nobility reflected strong influences from Empress Dowager Xiaozhuang and Emperor Shunzhi who adhered to Buddhism. Whether that's true or not is debatable.

I'm not saying those older stuff were super accurate by any means, but some stuff actually showcased some pretty authentic elements that we don't see in modern dramas anymore. Or rarely. However maybe I'm thinking of movies a bit more than dramas now to think of it. XD

In all honesty, because of the Qing and the disappearance of the hanfu, there's a lot that is forgotten about them. New information are being discovered even now. I'm just glad there is a greater push for authenticity than before.

In answer your question, Chinese costume is not a focus in my studies but just a hobby. ^^" So I'm certainly not pretending to be an super expert on hanfu here. XD I do study in Asian Studies however.
Out of curiosity too, I'm assuming you take Chinese History/culture in school? Or is it something you actively study on your own?

Thanks to everybody for clarifying or rather saying that Qing and Ching are the same thing. Initially I thought they were the same, but got confused because in the earlier TVB "Ching" series (The Ching Emperor, Fist of Power, War and Rememberance, The Lonestar Swordsman) the men's hair were braided but didn't have the half bald look, and I saw most of the "Qing" series (probably most Mainland) the men were half bald with the braids. I guess it was TVB that changed the traditional look? Because for Bu Bu, I was thinking before, "why didn't they do the braid with the hair up/down to their forehead?"...LOL

lol. actually, i think they did that in taiwan series too! cause i remember some of qiong yao's early 90s series where the male leads had the braids down their backs but didnt have the head half shaved too. i personally prefer the authentic look, cause having your head full of hair WITH a long braid going down the back is just weird. lol

You are correct, early Qiong Yao dramas had that hairstyle. I think HZGG was the first one where they didn't have the full hair with braids. Until you guys started this topic I always thought that was accurate! I know the half shaved look too but I thought the full head of hair with the braids was a later style or something. Jeez! Everything I know about Qing dynasty and early Republic costumes and hair style I know from Qiong Yao dramas. Producers really need to pay more attention to this stuff because naive, impressionable girls like me will believe whatever they put on the screen.

LOL. for some reason, i always thought the half bald way was right. its probably because HZGG was like the first period drama i really watched/loved

Would that make you a YingShi(Zheng Jiaying + Liu Shi Shi) fan then? LOL..

Luanee, there are plenty of Kevin and LSS's pictures, but you'll need to go through the pages to find them

You should go through them all. We had some pretty awesome conversations going back there. lol. Plus pages and pages of awesome photos! There's tons on Kevin.

Also if you dislike the Nicky/LSS pairing, you might have a hard time with this drama. They are going to be together a lot. lol.

Haha it's okie, when i watch dramas, i usually skip through those parts i dont like. I dont have the patience to finish the entire drama, so usually i will look for the episode synposis then only watch those I like lol..

    @ Plushie
Agree, agree and so envious! Understanding Chinese history/culture is sort of a requirement for what I do (well, at least to be truly exceptional in the field) - I practice Chinese Medicine. I'm planning to study Classical Chinese language in Taiwan.

If I ditch the post-grad med idea, I'm thinking of a Philosophy/Anthropology/minor Chinese Studies...maybe I could do a thesis on the Wuxia media genre .

    @ ChineseChik525

cause having your head full of hair WITH a long braid going down the back is just weird. lol
So true. Made me think of men trying to be girlie wannabes . Also, it didn't seem to do much good for trying to fit the hat on...just looked ill-fitting and awkward.

    @ Vienne94

I think HZGG was the first one where they didn't have the full hair with braids.
Oh and didn't Leo Ku have problems with that (as I remember reading then).

impressionable girls like me will believe whatever they put on the screen.
LOL...I believe we were all like that at some time. I blame it on the Trivium being taken out of mainstream education.

Leo Ku??? He wasn't in HZGG. Was he considered for a part originally?
