It's no wonder though, this series is going for the big production, zheng ju 正剧 route even though it's based on an internet novel. They are really throwing money at this thing, but they've already secured their returns already. The airing rights to this drama have all been bought out even before they finished filming, so people are really expecting this to be a hit.

Many book fans are upset and unhappy though because this series changed the setting from a imaginary, heavily Tang influenced dynasty to a historically grounded Qing dynasty (changing the emperor to Yongzheng no less). Not that anything is wrong with YongZheng, just that the original emperor is supposed to be in his late 20s. You can imagine how strange it is for book fans to see the main girl having a relationship from a good looking man in his 20s to a man who is 45 - 50s. Complaints that they look like father and daughter is pretty prevalent. lol.

Plus YongZheng was never known for his elaborate private life or his hou gong 后宫 (he had a fairly small one compare to many emperors) so people are finding him with all these women a bit weird. haha.

I really dislike the overly elaborate headdresses these women are wearing. It's way too much stuff, not to mention historically inaccurate. Sometimes less is more. If only they could have toned it down a bit.

Either way, Yongzheng is having a really busy year. Getting worked to death.

i also prefer that they tone down the make up for the actresses. however, the heavy make up has strangely grown on me...and sun li looks superb in some of those pictures.

Why did they change the setting (and the good looking dude)? As if we're missing any Yongzheng action these days...

In any case, I'm already getting dizzy from all the palace dramas this year (and some of them haven't even come out). Forget I ever complained about the overdose of wuxia dramas from yester-year.

Unfortunately, the decisions was forced upon the drama. The State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television (SARFT/ 国家广播电影电视总局) in China does not allow what you'd call 架空 type settings.

Everything has to be historically grounded with the exception of wuxia and fantasy films such as Chinese Paladin. No semi-realistic settings is allowed. This is also why Qing Shi Huang Fei's setting was also changed to the 5 dynasty and ten kingdom period rather than keep the imaginary Chinese setting in the original novel.

Why did they chose the Qing dynasty and Yongzheng? Because circumstances and relations between characters were the closest between history and the novel. The original drama tried to set the story in Tang Dynasty ( as that was the dynasty that inspired most of the novel) but that first script was rejected by the SARFT. I guess the government deemed it too far from actual history? Not that setting it in Yongzheng's reign makes it better. The future Emperor Qian Long is certainly not some woman named Zhen Huan.

Since Yongzheng was already in his 40s when he became emperor, they had to change the guy from 20s to 40s. Oh well what can you do?

Despite my love for Bu Bu Jing Xin the novel, I'm still looking forward to Hou Gong more for two major reasons:
    - Chen Jian Bin as Emperor Yongzheng - he was absolutely awesome in Qiao Jia Da Yuan and Three Kingdoms as Cao Cao
    - Producer and director Zeng Xiao Long, known for ground-breaking human dramas like A Native Of Beijing In New York and Golden Marriage

Read that this will air on CCTV-8.
