A TV movie is at most ~2-3 episodes... so it'll be about 12-18 equivalent 40 minute episodes... That is still only about 25% of original run-time... too little to tell the story...

I still think it would be interesting to see how this show gets americanized. New music? Maybe they could get Hans Zimmer involved, even though the odds are stacked against that idea since Zimmer only compose music for big screen stuff. I'm curious how they are going to reshoot the scenes. Will they need to get the original cast to reprise their roles? But seriously, why reshoot scenes when they already have more scenes than they can use?

I think they going to re-arrange the scenes and re-dubb things w/ American voice actors/actresses.

I hope they re-dub the whole thing, perhaps on the DVD version.

HK TV stations use to chop up/shorten Mainland TV series as well. People dislike it very much & I believe they stopped.

In Chinese censorship only "small" portions are cut for various cultural/political reasons... But it's ridiculous to cut SO MUCH, for believing audience is not patient enough to endure/watch it. I believe it will be broadcast on a basic cable channel of some sort. American series tend to be self contained where each episode is like a mini-movie in of itself... w/ a sub-beginning & sub-ending... unlike Chinese series that span for MANY episodes before concluding....

I'm so confused how this American broadcast will work. I think the pace is too slow for American audiences hence the need to re-edit the scenes. Plus, the cultural differences are most likely too much for those who have absolutely no knowledge about Chinese culture. I really think only those with some Chinese cultural interest or those who likes to watch Asian dramas would watch it.

I think last year the Chinese movie Painted Skin 2 was in select theaters here. I was waiting for the previous showing to end and overheard a Caucasian couple coming out from the theater saying "That was boring. Was expecting swordfights and war." While it was eye-opening to see the amount of Westerners coming out of the theater.

No offense to anyone but Painted Skin 2 was boring. So was The Sorcerer & the White Snake, which will get limited theatrical release in the coming weeks. They need to stop with the comical scenes and stay focused on the main story.

To tie in my comment about those other movies into this conversation better, I think Westerners expect more martial arts when they see Chinese films. Meaning, they want more "Red Cliff", "Curse of the Golden Flower", etc. I have no idea how well received the movies such as "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" or "Lust, Caution" were in America.

It'd be interesting to see how well Zhen Huan does in the US. By films, do they mean TV movies or theatrical films at the theaters?

I thought Painted Skin 2 was far from boring, actually vastly improved compared to Painted Skin 1 which was very slow-paced. For me, Zhen Huan was between the two. It wasn't over-the-top exciting with action scenes but it wasn't dead boring either.

They meant TV movies (to be broadcasted on TV). I'm not sure if it will be for local networks or cable networks.

Painted skin was confusing, to many who has no cultural references to series, such as Liao Zhai, Liao Zhai Zhi Yi, the many HK series based on Pu Songling's classic short stories and especially Painted Skin, the 36 episode series...

The White Snake movie also had not enough background references for movie goers to understand the story witout having already seen the 2006 series or read/heard the folklore....

To Americans it is almost like watching the latest James Bond 007 / StarTrek / horror / various sequels / etc... movie without ever seeing the previous movies or series or books...

Additional details regarding the US version of The Legend of Zhen Huan was reported yesterday by China Daily. It shoots down rumors that the unnamed U.S company that purchased the rights to the show was HBO.

A funny parody touching on the soon-to-be-Americanized version of Zhen Huan.

LMAO - that was amazing! Watching the Empress and Hua Fei bickering about cutting Hua Fei's screentime in the U.S. version is so funny. The ending showing the short clip from Big Bang Theory is definitely a stroke of genius. HAHA.

Damn, those 76 episodes were hard to get through. But The Legend of Zhen Huan was definitely the most detailed and realistic portrayal of the Qing Dynasty. The emperor annoyed the hell out of me though. Guo Jun Wang was the one character that kept me hooked to the series after Hua Fei died, and I cried more than Zhen Huan did when he died, and I wasn't even the one who fed him poison.

This drama is currently airing on Singapore Channel 8 weekdays 11pm.
Local male audience are interested although we don't always get exposed to mainland costume drama.
