I sorta got interested in this drama...just been reading summaries and comments online...and wrote a brief synopsis on my blog. I really love the costumes! I must say it's one of the best Qing costumes I've ever seen.

Wow...I think among the Qing series coming out this year, Hou Gong has the most elaborate costumes. Look at Emperor Yongzheng's gold clothes - it's like scintillating! My only beef is that the women are too heavily made up. I prefer the more natural look.

heavy makeups do not look good in real life, but look absolutely great on stage, under spotlights

btw she's acting VERY well in this drama. and so pretty, even prettier than in TLBB2003.

I have watched 51/76 now(yes, 76 episodes in total!!), and I will say this IS a great drama!! But only for history lovers, historical drama lovers, and Chinese culture lovers. Those who are looking for a drama full of love and cute boys should never watch this. This is about how a naive, warm-hearted girl gradually becomes a cruel and cold-blooded Empress-mother. Zhen Huan lost everything in the Forbidden City--love, child, hope, friendship. So this is not a idol drama, it is a serious drama. (But this drama is NOT real history!)

The costume and hairstyle of those concubines are REALLY pretty!!

Like you mentioned this seems like the most serious drama out of the huge onslaught of Qing-palace-themed series lately (not idol-ish at all). Plus it features Sun Li, Jiang Xin, and Li Dong Xue, all of whom I like...along with beautiful costumes/hairpieces/sets as mentioned...^_^ So despite the fact that I am pretty much sick and tired of scheming-palace-based dramas by now, this is definitely on my must-watch list (now if only I can get around to that list, lol. Doesn't help that this series is insanely long! O_o).

At first I thought 76 is toooooo long, but after I started to watch it, it just seems that every minute is precious and I still need more~
I am also tired of scheming-palace-based dramas, I hope to see more interesting themes. Actually there are many nice novels on the Internet, some of them better organized than BBJX, and the topic varies greatly. History, war, romance, si-fi, fantacy, wuxia, sports, games, horror... I have read great novels from everyone of these topics. I just hope that the directors can think by themselves, don't follow others like a sheep.

I've actually watched a few of the middle episodes already 48 to 50, but I want to wait for the higher resolution videos to come out before I do a full marathon. The currently available episodes are really fuzzy and not so great....

Yes, the resolution is too low. I will definitely buy DVD if it is 720P or 1080P, just to enjoy the pretty dress.
To tell the truth, I have't seen such nice design, which is both pretty and faithful to history, in, like, ten years, so I'm really excited and cannot controll myself hahaha.

the acting for this show is amazing and man...the back-stabbing is so nicely done...it took me a while to figure out the real evil mastermind...usually i am quite quick figuring out stuff but there's just so many layers to the characters...and i love guo jun wang!! he's so zhi qing! love him!!

I agree with you that the back-stabbing is so nicely done. Sometimes I thought someone has nothing to do with something but at last she just turns out to be the murderer.
Wen Shi Chu is also cute and reliable. He helps Zhen Huan so selflessly. And I love Shen Mei Zhuang, the way she speaks, walks, and weeps...she is so elegant, just like some lady came out out of an ancient Chinese paint.
And Hua Fei, she is a bad woman, but also a pathetic woman. Her beauty just died in such a cruel way...
