Ady An Yixuan and Feng Shaofeng’s “Emperor’s Harem” releases trailer

Traveling back from Palace/Gong’s Qing dynasty, Feng Shaofeng turns into a Tang musician who seeks to play his love’s duet with old friend Ady An Yixuan. The Emperor’s Harem tells of the palace intrigues of the Tang harem, starring the optimistic and talented Pipa player Ady An, the handsome musician Feng Shaofeng, the elegant dancer Lv Yi, as well as an assortment of beauties of all ages from the Harem.

The Emperor’s Harem (后宫, not to be mixed with Sun Li’s Qing dynasty drama 后宫甄嬛传) is the the third drama starring the two Huayi stars, the other ones being Qing dramas Suo Qing Qiu 锁清秋 and Yun Niang 芸娘. Ady An said that she had received the script first, and immediately thought of Feng Shaofeng when they were seeking a male lead because the two are already so familiar. They say the third time is the charm, so

Not that it really matters to the plot, but is this set in the Tang or the Ming???

Yah I know! I look at the pictures and it looks so Tang. It's not very Ming dynasty at all. Was very surprised to read that it's the Ming Dynasty??

Costume for the Ming and Tang (and Song for that matter) can look pretty similar though (esp if the series isn't really aiming for historical accuracy).
A few things are distictly Ming and their presence would rule any previous dynasty out, but not so much the other way round.

I was just confused since wiki says "Ming" but the above post said "Tang". *shrug*. I don't think it makes too much difference on the plot, though.

I agree that the costumes for Tang, Ming and Song look similar. The series by the way, is set in the Ming dynasty during the era of Emperor Cheng Hua. Tavia Yeung, Lv Yi and Liu Ting Yu, who play Imperial Consorts Wan, Shao and Bai respectively are real consorts of the Emperor. Ady's character on the other hand is most probably a made-up one.

On a side note, its really rare to see a mainland trailer with english subs!

Well to be honest, Ming Dynasty is probably one of the worse Dynasty when it comes to portrayal of costuming in dramas. The most "Frankenstein" dynasty as I like to say.

If you want a closer portrayal of Ming Clothing, check out Allure Snow. I think they did a bad job with the costuming. Some stuff looks a few sizes too big. Cloth looks cheap and plain and obviously liberties were taken, but the general Ming style is roughly there. More than most Ming dramas anyways.

Song actually has a unique style so I don't really have a problem differentiating it from other dynasties. They tended to like it more simple and plain with their patterns and designs in comparison to the opulent Tang. They also favour a thin silhouette.

Both Song and Tang's court costumes for the men can be very similar though as both dynasties used Tang as their template.

Anyways, after seeing the trailer, why do I want to watch this series? I'm not really into these harem dramas at all. XD

The impression that I get from what I gather from wikepedia et al is that Ming kind of IS the "Frankenstein" dynasty . It copies Tang's style but also includes the newer editions of Song style and even has an occasional dash of Mongol inspiriation. A few things are distinctively Ming (ie. those black transparant headband/hat that men wear) and some styles are more popular than others (ie. sleeveless overcoats), but otherwise you can't really exclude anything from Ming--especially considering court/imperial wear will differ from commoner wear. Song is known to be a little less flashy and more conservative than Tang, but I'm not enough of an expert to be picking things apart simply from it's color (but my knowledge is limited since I mostly get my stuff off the internet). The only style more distinctively Tang appears to be the "high waist (above breast)" dresses. But then again, maybe it was just more popular during that time period and doesn't mean it isn't worn in later periods nor that Tang women didn't wear normal waist dresses. (I'm only getting most of these ideas off the internet w/o any scholarly resources)

But I think in the context of television/movies, most of these costumes are meant for the eye of the modern audience and thus the standard for fashion will reflect modern standards of beauty rather than the actual standards during the dynasty itself (ie. Yang Guifeis are never chubby looking....) Costumes from the 80's are pretty different from costumes in the 90's and 2000s. Even if we look into hollywood, a movie made in the 2000s about the 1940s will feature different looking cuts on the costumes than a movie actually made in the 1940s.
