lol yup, nice thought! I always thought her face looks prettier straight up than lowered. A good thing about her is that she's not trying to look like typical actresses nowadays who want to have their skins looking washed out in paleness.

I hope she gets opportunities to play the more opulent roles in the future; ancient palace dress and more sophisticated modern attire accentuate her looks, while Qing (too fussy) and Min-guo styles (too plain) tend to hide them. (In a similar way, I'm wistful that Jiang Qinqin played so many Qing and Min-guo dramas at the height of her beauty. She made a gorgeous Xi Shi early in her career.)

really? I actually love her character in Strange Hero. she and Wallace suit so beautifully in the drama. their love actually outshadowed LSS+Wallace. How I wish that she could starred as Princess Fragrance. The role is perfect for her except it isn't the main character in Jin Yong's TBATS.

Honestly, I wish they’d stop with the remakes of classics and focus on creating new roles for today’s actresses. Yes, you get immediate buzz and a built-in audience, but the chance of disappointment is almost inevitable (not to mention ridicule, in the more risible cases). The original Chinese Ghost Story had the genius of Tsui Hark at his peak and the talents of both Leslie Chung and Joey Wong, plus the best of the golden era of HK filmmaking (in costume, choreography, script, art design, music, editing, etc), something that just can’t be recreated in the atmosphere of today’s entertainment industry. The role of Xiao Qian became iconic on the basis of Wong’s performance, to the extent where she became (and remains) the reference point for future interpretations of ghosts and fairies/demons in Chinese movies. It’s why the producers of the new version went deliberately in another direction, to avoid the inevitable comparisons, but they obviously failed because of all the factors I mentioned above (I’ll grant that the CGI is better in this production, but that’s about it).

I think of TLY’s eyes above as belonging more to a human beauty, though I can imagine her playing a version of a ghost/fox demon, perhaps in the future. But not Nie Xiao Qian. The role is just too closely associated with Wong, whose combination of sensuality (she's much more womanly than either LYF or TLY, for one thing) and ethereality with sorrow was utterly unique. Of other actresses I can think of off the top of my head who’ve played ghosts/fox demons, none of them can touch her here, not even Zhou Xun, who is one of the best actresses working today and whose Painted Skin actually got decent reviews.
