I don't see what's so mary sue (or larry stu, since the protag's a guy) a male. Fine, so it's basically a story about how he discovered and trained his secret skills, gaining power and influence as it went on. But he's not unrealistic and ridiculous to the point of being something like Richard Rahl in Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series.

Oh I've been interested in reading L.H.'s Tales of Otori trilogy too. Is it as good as people have said it is? I read some comments on bn.com and others and they seem to like it.

It's not bad, I am currently reading the 2nd book "Grass For His Pillow". This series also got me interested in reading Laura Joh Rowland 'Sano Ichiro" series.

Another one I'd recommend is Sean Russell's "The Initiate Brother" series, it's really good.

It's still kinda demoralizing when I toss out the title of a book and nobody seemingly cares about it.

I mean, I can even go into detail about how I felt about the last few short stories in Thomas Mann's anthology (read thru all those first before going to Death in Venice), and also describe how blown away I was by Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities. But I still feel that no one really gives a crap anyway. I know, putting up the title of what you're reading right now is fun and all, but thought adding a few sentences of what it's about, or what you think about it so far might at least start a conversation or two.

It's by a Japanese author, Murakami. It's translated into English. The story is about how a successful man, Haijme, is catapulted back into the past when his childhood love, the mysterious Shimamoto, reappears in his life.
