I never understood why Newman is so happy over Claire...their relationship is never developed in a way so that I could relate to it.

Perhaps I might have gotten more out of it had I not read the whole thing in a day, but forget a single chapter - the whole book is too long! I mean, could that chapter on Newman's travels not have been CONDENSED a little? But overall I think The American is one of Henry James's better works, mainly because what Newman does at the end is pretty noble of the guy. That redeems him in my mind despite his annoying naivety throughout the novel.

I've never read The Portrait of the Lady, but from my other Henry James's (like The Ambassadors and ugh...Daisy Miller) I don't really think I will unless the book is assigned. Oddly enough Henry James sang the praises of one of my fave books - The Scarlet Letter. At least we had similar tastes?

How much do you read a week, SS? Maybe in terms of number of pages, since I don't really process how much 500 words is. Just a bit of info to carry with me as I make some decisions with where I want to go in life.
For my Henry James class, we usually spend about 3 classes on a novel, 1-2 classes on a short story. Novels are usually split into three parts to read. I'm also taking 2 other English classes, a poetry and a folklore/folk art class. It's a lot of reading. We'll be reading The Wings of the Dove next month (a super long James novel).

At first, I doubt Newman's love for Claire, but I guess he did love her. The ending was more of a release for Newman. I mean what the Bellegardes did to him, by burning the letter he released himself from them. Valentin was too good for Noemie.

I'm going to read the "The Middle Years" by Henry James next, and then The Spoils of Poynton.

Her Twlight series has potential but she doesn't take it to another level and I'm disappointed at the things she comes up with. She just doesn't impress me much. I've read better Vampire/Supernatural novels.

just finished The Lady of the Camellias by Alexandre Dumas Fils. silly me who never took French, I didn't know fils means son, so i thought it was the same dude who wrote count of monte cristo and three musketeers. imagine my surprise when i read the preface! that being said, the book is not bad. has anybody here read it before? i want to discuss my dislike of armand.

I'm just started reading Goodkind SOT series (I know its late already since this book out in 1994). Its a superb book with kickass characters, superb fight and magic. Richard & Kahlan are cute together. Its a good companion for my Jim Butcher Codex Alera series.

While I already read all Codex Alera series and eagerly waiting for the next book, there are another 10 more books of SOT in waiting and a new 22 eps tv series by Sam Raimi out this Fall - woohooo!. Hope its not bland/fake looking like the Hercules/Xena series.

I'm reading The Wings of the Dove by Henry James and Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder.

I've only read 2 chapters of Poison Study, but I can already tell the author writes very well and has good diction. I have a feeling it'll be a good book, depending where the author takes it.

How I Became Stupid - Martin Page

It's supposed to be written in french but translated into english. I'm still reading it, halfway through. I find it sacastically funny or funnily sacastic (applicable, either way). Obviously, it's not a book of instruction manual that teaches one to the way of stupidity, but rather, a reflection of the stupidity that applies in our daily lives. The words are poetically phrased, emotions are dramatically expressed and story is intelligently written.

Good book. I recommend to all intelligents.

So, have you finish Poison Study, can you tell us about the magic system, is it very elaborate or just in the background, subtle?

Oh, Sorry I won't be of help there. I started reading it last month, but got caught up with assignments left and right. I'll probably try reading it again next week.

    History, history, history books!

Done with the novel How I became Stupid - Martin Page, will share about this book when I have time. It's of dark humour, very sacastic and funneh!

Starting on reading: The Holocaust: The Jewish Tragedy - Gilbert Martin. Very organised context and good book, at a glance. I just started reading it now, and find the words.....very expressive. It could actually bring me the vision of how it all happened.

The Sunwell Trilogy by Richard Knaak.

It has it's own lore, just like LoTR. I like the series, but unfortunately it's hard to get one, except if you're gonna buy it at amazon or ebay. But since I don't have a credit card, I think I'll just have to be patient and wait till this good friend of mine lend me the third book.

Prisoner of birth by Jeffrey Archer

Archer's stint in prison has done him some good, the book had many elements of prison life that reminds the reader of his prison diary series. Very engaging stuff.

Just finished House of God by Samuel Sherm, a highly sarcastic look at the medical profession as interns start their work.

I'm alternating between reading the translation of Jin Yong's Legend of the Condor Heroes / Shen Diao Ying Xiong Zhuan that I found on this site, and reading a published translation of The Book and the Sword / Shu Jian En Chou Lu that I purchased from Amazon.com.
