Default Yang Guo had kept on training for 16 years?

He only trained for 6 years and spend 10 years being the condor hero, but what if he'd continue. YG had nearly reached wooden sword level but called it quits.

How strong do you think he might have become
    and
How might he have fared against other JinYong characters?

Won't make much of a difference.

So he would never reach no sword level?

Dunno, I don't think he can. He can probably hit wooden sword though eventually.

There was no indication that the ocean method was wavering in increases, and by the way the condor nudged YG in that direction, one would think this is the method DG himself used.

His returns were tapering off. If he had kept at it, he would probably be stronger but not too significantly. I'm not sure he was capable of reaching wooden sword level simply by the training method he was using. His techniques were significantly inferior to DGQB's, and I'm willing to bet that would also limit his ability to reach each subsequent level. DGQB may have eventually reached a higher level with ocean training, but he was probably more efficient at it than YG. Or, at the very least, there one was one key element or secret that YG missed.

So that stuff about greats not being able to advance further up after reaching their prime in MA holds true then?

I don't think there is any particular reason to think there's some sort of imposed Greats level cap. However you would probably need more luck and/or talent so that's pretty rare.

Martial arts progression seems to work in jumps where characters go from say 100 --> 400 really fast then earn 10-20 points for a couple years until their next breakthrough, where they would go from say 600 -- > 1400 then have slower linear gains again. If YG somehow figures out the secret of Wooden Sword I'd imagine he'd get significantly stronger than the Greats and then start improving at their rate again.
