I'm so glad FSF is getting fantastic reviews for his Xiang Yu! Can't wait to watch it!
...Isn't 178cm more like 5'10?? I think that height is pretty accurate...actually at times I think he may indeed be closer to 5'11. However, I'm mostly basing this on pics of him standing next to Yang Mi and LYF. Next to YM, he is almost a head taller than her in flats, but just a bit taller than her in pretty high heels. Next to LYF, he's about half a head taller than her in low heels but about the same height as her when she wears very tall heels...which, if YM's height of 168cm and LYF's height of 170cm are accurate, I think 5'11 would be about right. But then again, in those pics he is probably wearing shoes of his own with some height to it so 178cm is probably indeed true.
At any rate I would classify him as a tall actor (especially next to fans etc--who are more average in size than actresses who are taller--you can really see the difference). But not "very tall" (like Hu Ge is).
Also as for "White Vengeance"...I heard that LYF does not have much screentime (VoxiVoxi wrote an english review of that movie in LYF's thread if you haven't read it already) so don't let that stop you from watching the movie. From what I've read, LYF does a passable job in this one...
LMAO!!! I hadn't seen this comic before, thanks! Funny thing is I saw a thread in the baidu forums recently which was titled something like, "Hu Ge needs to work harder/climb further up in the entertainment industry, all his wives are getting stolen by Feng Shaofeng..." I swear, HG/Wallace Huo shippers and YM/LYF shippers are the most hilarious...I never fail to keel over with laughter reading their stuff!
News: Feng Shaofeng is actually currently in Durban, South Africa, as a member of the Chinese group who are attending the climate talks there currently.
Check it out, after Yang Mi's international showing at Milan Fashion Week now Feng Shaofeng is also making his mark in the international news! Except he got a mention in a Yahoo news article!

Feng Shaofeng, an actor who is also the ambassador of a green commuting campaign, offered his support to adopting a low-carbon lifestyle in China. His message echoed Xie's statement that China "will maximize its efforts to fight climate change and shoulder due responsibilities in line with its development stage".

Guys, if you haven't watched "White Vengeance" yet you TOTALLY SHOULD.
Feng Shaofeng is amazing in there--I had my expectations pretty high due to all the rave reviews about his Xiang Yu and I was still very impressed, he definitely deserves all the praise he's been getting! Also he looks sooooo good in there (ok I am biased about him in general but I have always been pretty fair/neutral when it comes to his looks I think...and I was swooning when he first appeared on the screen that's how good he looked ). Apparently I am not alone because from what I read online that was the general reaction in the movie theatres too in China (i.e. girls swooning when he appeared haha ). The only complaint I have is in some scenes his hair is a bit overly curly (which is NEVER a good look on guys IMO and which made me want to facepalm when I first saw his movie stills) but for the most part they got it right.
Seriously, he looked so good when he was in battle displaying his martial arts prowess...or just sitting there being all "ba qi"...
Ahem. Anyways the movie itself was overall very good. Don't think it's an award-worthy movie (I have major complaints with their lacklustre buildup, and the use of flashbacks was horrible and excessive--seriously, the whole movie was a flashback in itself, then within that there are a zillion more flashbacks! I mean, flashbacks are great devices and really add to the feel of a movie when done well, but I always thought using "flashbacks within flashbacks" really cheapens the whole thing). But overall quite enjoyable with some really lovely sets/scenery and touching moments (I didn't cry like some people did but I did feel sad at parts). Some pretty gruesome scenes too which I didn't expect and really made me cringe...

Here's an article on FSF. Breaking into the movies has been a dream of his for 10 years, and only his sharp rise in popularity after Gong made it possible.

It's not a super high resolution version--even at the highest quality, when the movie first started I almost stopped watching because quality was a bit blurry (and I really wanted to watch this one in super HQ). However either the quality got better or I got used to it because I thought the quality was great after the initial bit.
I have to say the first part of this movie was pretty poorly done--they tried to do some meaningful setup by showing how Liu Bang/Xiang Yu met, how Xiang Yu/Yu Ji met, etc etc, but all the flashbacks and jumping between various storylines without much continuity made the end result very messy and poorly done. Personally I think they should've just done away with the backstory if they were going to do it so rushed (I understand it's only a 2-hour movie though). After all, the story of Chu-Han contention is so well-known that all the setup is unnecessary (especially if they can't do it properly like they probably could've if this were a TV series). I was pretty bored in the first half hour or so and didn't really get into the story until after the first hour. I was only watching it for FSF at that point, lol...also, the occasional interjections of attempted humour felt so random and out of place. They didn't make me laugh but instead threw me completely out of the movie.
However, once they get to the actual "Hong Men Yan", things definitely get interesting! While the feast itself was COMPLETELY different to what I had imagined in my head, I actually didn't mind because the way it was built up in the movie was excellent. I was very impressed by how the movie really felt like it took place in the bleakness of winter despite the fact that it was shot in the sweltering heat of summer, with much of the battle scenes in the deserts of Dunhuang. I was impressed that the movie somehow made me both like and dislike both Xiang Yu and Liu Bang--so it was somehow satisfying to see them both get tragic/happy endings. (It feels weird saying it because, after all, I do like FSF a lot, but I really felt like defeat and death was a satisfying/fitting ending for him...yet that feeling doesn't take away from me admiring and liking the character. Likewise for Liu Bang. Very rare for movies/dramas to achieve this so I definitely give kudos to the director for it.) All the other supporting characters like Fan Zeng, Zhang Liang, Fan Kuai, and Han Xin were also well-portrayed and made me feel for them. Particularly the former two, definitely displayed how intelligent and wise they were in the "Hong Men Yan" "chess game".
