    Default Chicago and NY

Going to Chicago during Mid-Oct and NY in 3rd week of Oct.

Anyone from those cities with tips regarding travel/food for my holiday?

    Thanks,

Chicago has one of the best public transportation systems in the US. Part of the train systems runs 24 hours. You can plan all your routes at maps.google.com and choosing the public transit route option.

Bring an extra layer. The lake wind is not for the faint of heart.

Check out yelp.com. I used it a couple times for NY to find restaurants, and it has always given me good finds. It also has reviews on activities/things to do. I've never been to Chicago (but I hope to change that!), but I suspect it will have a good database for that city too.

In addition to Hoju's suggestion of yelp, take a look at TripAdvisor.com's pages for the 2 cities. They have a feature called "Top things to do" for each city, as voted by users, that I found highly useful and accurate.

I love to go to smartertravel.com to check out travel articles, news, and advice. For New York travel guide, try this link:

I've been to New York City twice and loved it both times. Make sure you carve out some time to see a Broadway musical. TKTS discount booths in New York City sell discount broadway musical tickets. You will have to line up to purchase the tickets on the day of the show, but the price is usually 30-50% off! The lines aren't that long. I went to the booth at South Street Seaport and then walked around the area afterward. Here's the link to TKTS:

If you are traveling with a friend who knows New York City, it's better to take public transportation. It's a walking city, anyway. Driving around NYC is horrendous. Plus, the drivers are mostly nuts, zigzagging through the streets as if traffic laws haven't been invented yet!

I haven't been to Chicago before, so I'm not much help there. For Chicago travel guide, try this link:

    Summary of my trip.

    1) Chicago (1 week)

Stayed at Palmer House Hilton which is in the loop.

Loved Chicago- Very very nice skyline, parks and waterfront.

Millenium Park was a bock away, and had a fantastic teardrop sculpture.

The river and lake cruise was fantastic, with a lot of architecture explanations.

I liked the idea of the loop.

Shopped at State St, rather than Magnificient Mile - my wallet doesn't seem to be big enough.

    2) NY (4 Days and 3 Nights)

    Stayed at Time Square

    Traveled around on the subway

    Did the usual touristy thing
    -Liberty Island
    -Ellis Island
    -9/11 Memorial
    -Wall St
    -Time Square
    -Central Park

    A small collection of photos.

Thanks to all who had given some tips to me.
