The friend can be either male or female.
I think the answer is no, but let me know if you feel differently.
Yes
No

I've heard straight guys say it a few times in movies

Not directly, but I think it is fairly common for them to express that sentiment, albeit in less explicit manner.
别想把黑暗放在我的面前
太阳已经生长在我心底
不再有封闭的畏惧
奔腾的灵魂飞上天际
太阳 我在这里
I tell girls I missed them. With guys, would have to be a pretty lengthy absence, otherwise it's a where the hell have you been.
We say it to girls, but not to other guys because it sounds gay if we say it to each other...unless it is family.
--=={Grundle}==--
My straight guy friends never tell me they miss me. A few only said so after I've said it first.
The truth is straight guys do that all the time and we have certain ways to express the sentiment without sounding gay. Most likely you're not going to hear a guy say "yo, I miss you bro" to another guy. Instead, we may say or joke something like "hey, look who's back? Guess he's not on a short leash with his gf and ditching his homies anymore."
What you seek is seeking you. Believing is Seeing. Anything is possible if only if you could believe it!
Hermetic Law of Attraction
There sure are many rules to expressing affections when you are male!
I like me.
Will tell a female friend (only if I mean it.)
In the rare instance that I tell a male friend, I will be sure to say "I missed you man," and be sure to say it in a macho way not in a sentimental sissy fashion.
What are you fighting for? Just mix them into pissing beef balls, stupid.
