I love the original novel, but I honestly don't think Li Sheng and Mickey He suit the main roles...At least I never expected them to be cast...I hope they prove me wrong with their acting.

Her costumes here are so much better than the ones in NZGG. Please don't tell me that Mickey is the lead! God I see that guy every where, it is getting annoying.

I am currently watching to right now and it is good. It is not a perfect series due to historical inaccuracies and the supporting cast is not great. But I think the performances of the two leads make up for it despite their appearances might not be suited to the description in the novel.

Mickey really surprised me with his Jing Xuan. He was really into the stubborn character and still showed the softer side with his devotion. I think this is his best performance yet; his best written role up to date and he is not overshadowed by other male casts. Li Sheng too surprised me. For the first 6 eps, I was getting slightly annoyed at her Little Swallow behaviour, but after she undergoes the character change, Li Sheng really cut it with the crying scenes and acting more mature and subtle. Her acting has improved heaps since NHZGG. Mickey and Li Sheng have great chemistry in their love and hate scenes, and their tortured crying scenes are amazing. They look very comfortable with each other and I hope to see them pair up again in the future.

As for the supporting casts, there are not any great performances except for the kid who plays Li Sheng's son. His crying is heartbreaking. Though it is nice to see Pan Ying Zi back on TV screen. She looks good for her age. The male lead, Tian Jia Da is OK.

The costumes are OK, nothing too fancy nor is it crap. A lot of reused costumes from NHZGG though but it does not bother me. Another reason to watch this series is the action scenes. Mickey He's wire-assisted flying annoys me but the soldiers and the rebels have some nice traditional hand-to-hand combat scenes and there is no CGI involved. The first few eps of the series is bit slow, but the pace really picks up after ep 6.

The brief plot is about an innocent and super happy Mongolian princess comes to Beijing to reunite with her dad. She meets and falls in love with this Prince (Emperor's cousin) and meets this imperial guard who falls secretly in love with her, and is greatly adored by the Great-Grand Empress Xiao Zhuang. Stuff happens and her happy life ends and finds herself with a lot of enemies and the blood of her best friend on her hands. To save her life, Prince promises the Emperor to marry another and not see her for a while, which Princess hears about without knowing the full story, and handling the news at the same time when her father died and she was imprisoned, she breaks down.

Princess gives up on the Prince and starts to hang out with the Imperial Guard. Prince is devastated and begs (I mean seriously beg) the Emperor for her hand. But due to the Emperor's previous edict, Princess can only be the second wife. Things get horrible when she does not have any blood on the sheets from the wedding night and Prince thinks Princess slept with the Imperial Guard. Their relationship goes down a steep slope and gets even worse when she gets pregnant.

To make the long story short, Princess finds that her husband does not trust her, her mother-in-law despises her and her husband's primary wife is out to get rid of her and her son. To put the icing on the cake, the Imperial Guard teams up with an evil imperial concubine to bring down the Prince and she finds herself trapped between the two men.

The novel was darker and crueller with a stronger contrast against characters. Jing Xuan is an obsessive and borderline sadistic person. Mei Li is just naïve and Yong He is perfect. The series is more romantic and the focus is more balanced between the characters. Mei Li is even kinder and naïve, but Yong He has an evil side and Jing Xuan has a softer side. It is harder to choose between the two male leads in the series. The novel was quite short but with 41 eps, the series was slightly dragged longer with insertion of plot devices like evil imperial concubines, madly jealous wives, passionate rebels, etc...

There are some horrid wire-assisted fighting/flying/gliding with Mickey He but most of the fights are traditional hand-to-hand combats which is refreshing as there are no CGI involved. The costumes are good but looks recycled from NHZGG. Music is lovely. The general pace of the series is OK, being lightly draggy at the beginning but picks up when the tragedy begins.

The series is like a Qiong Yao series but the crying scenes all fit in place with the plot and more believable. If you can take all the crying in the rain and kneeling in the snow, then this can be an entertaining series for you. It could have been better with a better-looking cast, but the current casting is also effective in their roles. It is better than "Mystery in the Palace" and "Wang Zhe Qing Feng".
