The Legend of the Sword and the Saber
Written by Gigi
Forewords

This story is dedicated to Jin Yong, the greatest wuxia writer of all time and to the stars of the 80s who have contributed to the golden era of ancient TV serials.

The story is divided into three parts: Book of Sword, Book of Saber, and Book of Destiny. As a Chinese illiterate, I am likely to mess the language up in terms of character names or places. At this, I would be much appreciated for any corrections from Chinese pinyin to English grammars. I am also open for all constructive feedback from readers and promise to try my best to improve the story along the way.

As a fan of Jin Yong’s, I may subconsciously take geographic locations, sect names, and Kung Fu moves from his books. Please excuse me on this point. (I am kowtowing to his books at this point and said “Great master, may this humble servant succeed in writing the story”.)

I also would like to recognize Tu Vi, whose wonderful story, Destiny, has inspired this first fan fiction of mine. Lastly, I would like to thank WhiteKrane who has shown me the door to the fanfic world. Enjoy the story.

Part I: Book of Sword

Chapter 1
The Duel

Characters list (in the order of appearance):
Tian Fei .............. Adam Cheng Siu Chow
Yue Gao ............... Lau Dan
Yue Ling .............. Gigi Chiu Ngar Chi

Two men stood facing each other on the snow covering field. The cold wind whipped their robes and blew their hair ferociously, yet both men seemed to concentrate only on the weapons in each other’s hand.

Suddenly, the younger man pierced forward with his sword, targeting at the right shoulder of his opponent. The older man twisted his shoulder slightly to the left, and at the same time sending his saber out to meet with the sword. ‘Zheng’, the sword met with the saber forcefully, causing some snow-laden branches to break off from the trees. The men then pulled back their weapons and parried each other for another 20 moves. Then, without pausing, the swordsman swung his left foot toward the other’s left leg, and at the same time brought down the sword onto his opponent’s right shoulder. The sabersman, however, evaded the coming sword by stepping backward to the left. He then quickly kicked out with his right foot to the swordsman. The young man with the sword then jumped lightly over the coming kick and aimed his sword over the other man’s head. It turned out to be a trick move as the old man’s saber went up to protect his head, the swordsman quickly sent out his left palm to his opposite’s unprotected chest. Being an experienced fighter, the old man just let the palm hit his chest while summoning all his inner strength to the center of his body and reflexed it back through the palm. Taking the young man by this surprised move, the old man quickly chopped the saber down at the young man’s neck. The young swordsman could feel the strong force flowing continuously through the palm, causing his whole left body to be numbed. He pulled his palm back quickly and staggered back a few steps. When he saw the coming saber, it was too late for him to try to evade it. The old man suddenly pulled back his weapon and said with friendly smile, “Good exercise for the cold day, eh?”.

The young man grinned back. He cupped his hands and bowed to the old man. “Thank you Yue Sir for his instruction. I am lucky to witness ‘One Chop Mountain Tumble’ stance, and still be alive. I admit defeat wholeheartedly.”

The sabersman laughed and commented “You are too humble. If I had not have the stronger inner force than yours, the defeated today would have been me. I now see why everyone said that the North has Mountain, the South has Sky.”

The yong man shook his head. “No, no. The first part is alright, but the latter part is just a gibberish talk. I am honored, but how can I dare to be compared to the great Master Yue.”

“Ha ha. Humble and polite. You indeed deserved the name of ‘Gentleman Sword Tian Fei’. Your master, the Sword God, would have been proud of you.”

The wailing scream from the nearby mansion abruptly broke off the conversation.

“Young Miss, you can’t go out there. It’s very dangerous. You can get hurt.”

Heedless of the warning, a young girl of 16 dressed in blue, ran out of the house toward the two men. Jumping over big tree branches and running breathlessly, the girl finally reached Master Yue.

“Papa, the nurse said you are fighting again. Are you all right?” “I am going to bite anyone that dare to hurt you.” Clinging tightly to her father’s arms, the yong girl glared at the other man briefly before burying her face in Master Yue’s shirt, sobbing quietly.

“Now, now. I am fine. Ah Ling, don’t cry.” “I have just exchanged a few moves with a friend. Here, I’ll introduce him to you.” Yue Gao turned to his companion and explained “My younger daughter, Yue Ling.”

Tian Fei stepped forward, ready to greet the young Miss Yue. However, Yue Ling had no interest in meeting anyone else. Upon hearing that her father’s reassuring voice, she skipped happily back to the house where her anxious nurse has been waiting.

Part I: Book of Sword

Chapter 2
The Two Sisters

Characters list (not in particular order):
Tian Fei .............. Adam Cheng Siu Chow
Yue Gao ............... Lau Dan
Yue Ling .............. Gigi Chiu Ngar Chi
Lu Peng ............... Kong Wah

Tian Fei’s world had changed the moment he laid eyes on her. He caught only a glimpse of her face, yet its beauty had already imprinted forever in his heart. Her eyes, glistering with tears, were like a pair of bright stars, shining searchingly into his soul. Her voice was as clear as crystal and as sweet as a songbird. When she spoke, it seemed as if a song of heaven had been delivered to his ears. She looked so pure and so innocent like morning dew, so lovely and so fragile like a cherry blossom that was about to open its petals to greet the first sun ray.

When she suddenly turned away and ran nimbly back to the house, Tian Fei’s world turned dark, and he knew then that she would always be the one and only light in his life.

His train of thoughts was interrupted by Master Yue’s invitation to go inside the house.

The Yue House was situated in a valley near the Mountain Heng-Shan. It was spacious though simply built. The interior was sparsely decorated though everything was clean and neat. Even on this cold, harsh winter day, the house gave out the warmth and the tranquillity to the new comer. Master Yue explained to his guest with pride.

“I built this house when my wife died five years ago. We live a simple but content life here – with an old nurse, couples of servants, and weekly supplies from the nearby village.” By living here, I hope to retire from the martial world peacefully, and let my daughters grow up as any other village girls. He sighed, “When I was your age, I had wanted to be the best. Now that I am one of the best, I found that I could do without it. All I hope now is to find good husbands for my daughters and live to see their children running about.”

Tian Fei bowed respectfully to Master Yue. “Yue Sir’s words are the advice I would always remember. Indeed, a loving family in this heavenly location is the utmost happiness in a man’s life.” He thought of Yue Ling and smiled dreamily.

The cry uttered from Master Yue suddenly pulled him back to the real world. Master Yue was clutching his chest painfully. Tian Fei quickly assisted the old man to a chair and checked his pulse. “Hmm, your heart is beating so weakly. I’ll go get some help.”

At that moment, two people were running into the room. One was a man of 30 wearing peasant clothes, and another was a beautiful girl dressed elegantly in white. The girl moved quickly to Master Yue’s side, took out a pill from her pouch, and popped it in his mouth. At the same time, the man poured a cup of tea and wordlessly gave it to Master Yue.

After a while, Master Yue’s pain subsided. He smiled at the two newcomers. “What would I do without you two?” He spoke gently, looking at both youths fondly.

“Father, you should not exceed your strength. Remember full moon is approaching.” The girl in white scolded her father while massaging his shoulders.

“How could I forget? I am much better already. If you scold your father like this, who will want to marry you?” Master Yue teasingly joked with his daughter.

Yue Feng was about to answer her father when she saw a tall stranger. He was a handsome man of late twenties clothed simply in white robe. His entire countenance showed the goodness soul and an honest heart. She felt as if her heart had been snatched by his sharp brown eyes that seemed to read right into her inner thought. She heard her father said something. The stranger then smiled and bowed politely. “Miss Yue”, he greeted.

Yue Feng’s face turned into the crimson shade, making it dazzlingly handsome. She clumsily greeted him back, “Master uh…”

Tian Fei was stunned for the second time on that day. This oldest daughter of Master Yue’s was breathlessly beautiful. He thought that she was no less pretty than her younger sister was. A poem suddenly inspired in his head.

One is pearl,
One is jade.
One is an orchid,
And one is a lily.
One is as elegant as the sun,
One is as lovely as stars.
One is so divine,
And one is very delightful.
Two precious stones on one person,
Two beautiful maidens in one house.

Indeed, a house and any parents would have to be blessed to process such two valuable gems like these. (Author’s note: Feng means mother-of-pearl, and Ling means jade.) He repeated his name, “The last name is Tian, and the first name is Fei.”

Shyly, Yue Feng corrected her manner and turned to her father. “Father, you should get some rest. I will… I will take care of your guest.”

“Nonsense, I am all right now. Go and prepare food for us. I want to celebrate the occasion.” Master Yue turned to his student who has retreated to the corner of the room. “Peng, come meet Master Tian, the renowned ‘Gentleman Sword’ of the south.”

The two men bowed to each other. Lu Peng found the unexplained hostility toward this stranger. From his corner, he saw the reaction of Yue Feng to this young man and did not like it at all. He had tried so hard to become the only student of the great Mountain Saber Yue, and harder still to conquest the heart of the oldest daughter, Yue Feng. He thought that he had a chance, but the arrival of this Tian Fei seemed to destroy any of his small hope. Jealous, resentment, and anger overwhelmed Lu Peng’s heart. Nevertheless, he covered his emotions well and jovially befriended the younger man.

Tian Fei saw a sudden flash of hatred in Lu Peng’s eyes; then it was gone. Not sure of what he actually saw, Tian Fei reminded himself to be careful of Master Yue’s student in the future. Still concerned with the elder’s sudden sickness, he inquired of Master Yue’s health again.

However, Master Yue waved the question away unconcerned. “Don’t worry! It’s just an old man’s symptom. I exceeded a little of my strength, that’s all.”

Tian Fei kneeled down in front of Master Yue and apologized, “This is my fault. I should not have asked Yue Sir for a spar. Moreover, I should not have pulled the tricked move on you. Please forgive the youth foolishness of wanting to test the Great Master.”

Master Yue laughed and helped the young man up. “You are an honest man, and that is what I like. It was not your fault. I have been sick for a long time now, and would only get worse when it’s near the full moon. The wise man once said that true friends could only come from fighting. We fought squarely, and it was a good duel. I really admire your tactics. Let us be ones of those ‘true friends’. The pain will come and go, but the good friends are rare. I don’t intend to let you go easily. If you don’t mind our poor house, please stay for a while.”

Hoping to see his dream girl again, Tian Fei readily accepted the invitation.

That night at the dinner table, Tian Fei looked vainly for the second Miss Yue. The elder man noticed this and asked what he was looking for. Embarrassed, Tian Fei answered that he wondered if the younger Miss Yue was still mad at him for fighting with her father.

“Oh, no! Yue Ling was a kind-hearted girl, and she would never be angry with anyone long. She was just too excited, that’s all.” Master Yue answered good-humoredly.

Yue Feng detected the warmth and the concern when Tian Fei asked about Yue Ling, and she felt a twinge of jealousy at her younger sister, then guiltily dismissed her thought. Nonetheless, she realized that Yue Ling was once again a winner. Throughout the dinner, aside from polite greetings, Tian Fei didn’t give so much as a glance at her. Yue Feng thought of the time that she had taken to make herself beautiful and sadly thought, ‘I can’t even compare to a simpleton like Ah Ling.’

Lu Peng noticed that tonight sister Feng was more elegant than usual. She looked lovely in pale blue dress that arrested her slim waist and showed advantage of her beautiful figure whenever she moved. She put her silken hair up in a bun and decorated it with her favorite mother-of-pearl hairpin. Her eyes were bright, and her cheek was pink. He couldn’t help acclaiming at the heavenly sight. Love surged through his heart, and a desire of her kindled in him.

Throughout the meal, he secretly watched her with admiration. When she suddenly turned pale, he was concerned. “Sister Feng, are you all right?”

“Uh, I just have a slight headache. Father, may I please be excused?” Yue Feng smiled forcefully.

“Yes, yes. Get a good sleep. Tomorrow, I want you and Ah Peng to take Master Tian to the waterfall.” Master Yue excused his daughter and turned to Tian Fei, explaining, “Heng-Shan is one of the most beautiful mountains in the north. This house is on one of many hills that are parts of Heng-Shan. At the top of our hill, there is a majestic waterfall that is freezing in the winter and roaring in the summer. Ah Ling used to go up there to collect all kinds of wild flowers and herbs. She was such a good healer. Pity…” He sighed.

Tian Fei was intrigued by the remarks, but because of the etiquette, he held on his thought and continued his dinner in silence.

In the morning, he was waken up by a kid song. Hurriedly dressed, he went out and walked into a hothouse and found that the source of a sweet melody was Yue Ling, the girl he had been dreaming of all night.

Though everything else in the Yue house was rather shabby, the hothouse in contrast was luxury. Various types of summer plants were thriving. Hundreds of colorful flowers were blooming, sending out intoxicated aroma.

This morning Yue Ling was clad in green, making her more than ever like a fairy surrounding by fragrance flowers in a beautiful garden. Tian Fei was dazed at the sight in front of him. ‘Indeed, I am now in heaven. No such place could really exist on earth’, he thought.

Yue Ling stopped singing and turned her face to a stranger. “Who are you?” She asked trustingly.

Tian Fei bowed and introduced himself “I am Tian Fei, a friend of your father’s. We met yesterday.” For the second, he was afraid she would not remember him. Then he was afraid that she would remember him as a bad guy who was trying to hurt her father. Confused with his thought, he didn’t know what he really wanted.

To his relief, Yue Ling made a small nod and smiled at him warmly. “So, you are the guest my nurse was talking about.” At that, she seemed to lose the interest in him and continued with her song.

Lost in the dream world, Tian Fei stood silently, drinking in the sweetness of her voice and the lovely scene in front of him. As abruptly as she started, Yue Ling stopped singing. She looked around and frowned. Seeing Tian Fei still there, she ran to him and asked, “Can I call you Big Brother?” Surprised though was glad to be her acquaintance, he answered, “Sure, if you let me call you Ling-er.”

“Yes, Big Brother. You can call Ling-er Ling-er.” She laughed, showing her neat white teeth like mother-of-pearls. Then she looked solemnly at him. “Can Big Brother make Ling-er a grasshopper?”

Tian Fei can’t help laughing with her. He began fashioning a grasshopper out from a palm leaf. When he finished, he gave it to Ling-er who had been watching him with awe.

“Thank you, Big Brother.” Ling-er clapped her hands joyously and ran out to meet her father. “Look, Papa. Big Brother has made me a grasshopper. I will call him ‘Ah Bik’.”

“Fine, fine! Now, you go have breakfast. The nurse has been looking for you.” Master Yue smiled lovingly at his daughter.

Both men watched after the disappearing figure with different emotions. Master Yue’s heart was full of love and pity for his daughter, while Tian Fei was overwhelmed with love for Ling-er and with the sadness of her departure. Master Yue caught the young man’s expression and inwardly sighed. He thought, ‘Truth has to be told.’

However, he greeted Tian Fei brightly. “You are up early this morning. Hope Ah Ling’s singing did not bother you. We all are used to it every morning.”

“Not at all, Sir. In fact, to hear Young Miss Yue’s pretty voice in a heavenly garden like this is like a dream comes true.” Tian Fei answered sincerely, then reddened. He was a little too forward just now. Hastily, he tried to apologize.

Master Yue waved the apology away. He smoothly changed the subject. “You must be surprised at this extravagant display”, sweeping his hands over the surrounding garden. “Yue Ling loves flowers, so I built this garden just for her.” Unexpectedly, he asked the young man, “What do you think of my two daughters?”

Taken aback by the question, Tian Fei answered without thinking. “Miss Yue Feng is a good-looking lady, elegant and graceful. But Miss Yue Ling is like an angel. She is full of life and is so carefree as a bird and so... so… beautiful and sweet that everyone can’t help but falling in love with her. Tian Fei bit his lips in time before he had confessed, ‘including me too’.

Master Yue smiled grimly. He detected the gentleness in Tian’s voice whenever Ah Ling’s name was uttered. ‘Maybe Ah Ling will meet her happiness at last.’

“Master Tian, I consider you as a true friend of mine; therefore, I would like to tell you something about Ah Ling. She is really a child mentally. Three years ago, she fell ill and was kept in bed for three days and three nights with high fever. When the fever broke, she had turned into a simpleton. The doctor said that the fever has damaged her brain, and nothing could have cured her. I have invited many doctors to our house, but they only made her worse; so at the end I gave up. At least now, she is happy with what she loves – her songs and her flowers. Ah Ling was very intelligent as a child. She could have been a good healer. Now she has only a child’s brain, but she is always sweet and kind-hearted. She has always been my favorite child and still is.”

Tian Fei was stunned when he heard about Yue Ling. He cried out in protest, “But… surely there have to be a cure for Miss Yue. I heard of the famous Medicine Man in the east region. If we invite him to see Miss Yue, surely… surely…” Overwhelmed with shock and anguish, Tian Fei hit a nearby tree with force, causing its trunk to break in halves.

Master Yue looked at him with sympathy and responded in a gentle tone. “I have sent people everywhere, looking for this Medicine Man too, but no one has ever found him.” He recited, “Four Greats in four regions: Sword God in the south, Medicine Man in the east, Saber Lord in the north, and Dragon Lady in the west. My teacher, ‘Saber Lord’, has passed away for years now. Of the rest, only your teacher, ‘Sword God’, is the only living one for sure. Even that, he has not appeared in martial world since he denounced his first apprentice from the ‘Sword South’ School. For all we know, ‘Medicine Man’ could have been dead already.

Calmed down, Tian Fei replied thoughtfully. “Teacher mentioned once that twenty years ago, ‘Medicine Man’ had a bitter fight with ‘Dragon Lady’; this resulted in their swearing not to see each other’s face again. Since then, nobody has heard or seen them. However,” he continued hurriedly, “I feel that both are still alive somewhere.” He pleaded, “Please let me go search for him. My teacher would know the whereabouts of this Medicine Man. Given my teacher’s face, he surely cannot refuse to cure Miss Yue.”

Master Yue looked at his companion carefully. “Hmm… we will talk about it later. Let’s go have some breakfast. Today, Ah Ping and Ah Feng will take you to see one of the most breathtaking views in all China.”

After the breakfast, the three youngsters prepared to leave the house. Suddenly, a sweet voice rang out. “Papa, can I go with big sister Feng, brother Lu, and Big Brother? I promise I will be good. I want to see the flying water, please Papa?”

After looking at her pleading eyes, how could anyone refuse?

Both men were secretly pleased with different reasons. Tian Fei was glad to be with his Ling-er again, and Lu Peng was glad that he now could have sister Feng to himself. Yue Feng was the only unhappy member as the four trekked out to the waterfall. She marched quickly ahead, trying not to look back at her sister clinging at the arm of the ‘Big Brother’. Lu Peng followed her closely. He tried to start conversations many times, but was shunned out by her ferocious stares. Yue Ling skipped along happily with Tian Fei. She pointed at various trees on the path and named them on the spot.

“Here is Man Man. That is Xiao Bei, and there is Ah Shui. Those are the three brothers Duan, and these are three sisters Yee. They are engaged to one another.”

Tian Fei was floating in the clouds of happiness. Earlier, he had been distressed by the story of her illness. Now, he told himself that whether she would be cured or not, he would take care of her all his life.

The Search

Characters list (not in particular order):

Yue Ling ............... Gigi Chiu Ngar Chi
Yue Feng ............... Lisa Wang Ming Chuen

Ah Lan ................. Michelle Mei Suet
Zhang Tin .............. Eddie Cheng Siu Fai
Di An .................. Damian Lau Chong Yun
Liu Tong ............... Ray Lui Leung Wai

The air was cold, but crisp and fresh. The party had arrived at the summit of the hill in good time. Looking down from one of high cliffs, Tian Fei agreed that the vista was indeed breathtaking. At the nearby cliff, the majestic waterfall was freezing solidly, creating a giant slope running from the top of the cliff to a valley below it.

Yue Ling let go of Tian Fei’s hand and ran merrily over to her ‘flying water’. Three people cried out simultaneously.

“Ling-er, slow down! Don’t go too near the cliff!”
“Sister Ling, be careful!”
“Ah Ling, don’t go there! You will fall!”

Yue Feng’s heart skipped a beat when she heard Tian Fei called her sister intimately. Being the nearest one to the cliff top, she intercepted Yue Ling just before she had reached the waterfall. However, coming at fast speeds, Yue Ling bumped into her sister with full force, sending Yue Feng to fly over the cliff edge. Quick as light, Tian Fei leaped over and caught Yue Feng, then landed smoothly on the ground.

Yue Feng would never forget the moment she was in his arms. A new sensation was surging through her body, and she felt a joy flooding all over her heart. She wished he would hold her like this forever.

Unaware of her thought and emotion, Tian Fei asked Yue Feng gently, “Are you all right, Miss Yue?”

Before she could answer, Yue Ling had cried out. “There is no flying water! Where is the flying water? All I see is a white stone bridge. Where did the flying water go?”

Tian Fei let go of Yue Feng immediately and hurried over to Ling-er. Yue Feng’s bubbles of joy exploded. She looked angrily away and faced the worried Lu Peng.

“Sister Feng, how are you? Are you hurt?”

“I am fine.” She snapped, but relented when she saw a genuine concern in her martial brother’s eyes. “I am not hurt at all. Thank to Master Tian that has caught me in time.”

Lu Peng’s eyes darkened. He detected the admiration and warmth in her tone. He cursed himself for not having as good flying skill as Tian Feng. That last sentence coupled with the rescue scene had stirred up the resentment for another man that he had tried to control. Afraid that he might do something foolishly, he turned his back on Yue Feng and stormed away in anger.

Tian Fei was trying to console Ling-er. “The flying water is taking a rest right now. Big Brother promises it will come back to see you in the spring.” Looking around, he saw a group of fir trees standing in circle. Having an idea to cheer her up, he brought her to the center of the tree circle. “Big Brother is making Ling-er flying leaves instead. Now, close your eyes and count slowly one, two, three; then look up to the trees.”

Squealing with delight, Ling-er squeezed her eyes tightly, then counted, “One, two, three!” At the count of three, Tian Fei leaped up, twirled his sword rapidly in a move called ‘Reaching Moon Plucking Stars’, creating a small whirlwind that shook fir leaves from their trees. As a result, hundreds of fragrant fir leaves showered down slowly onto eagerly awaiting Ling-er.

Yue Feng witnessed the scene with aching heart. She thought, ‘Why does Ah Ling always get what she wants?’

Yue Ling and Tian Fei were the only happy people that came down the hill that afternoon.

After the dinner, Master Yue asked Tian Fei to meet him in his library. After much contemplation, he decided to let the young man go searching for the Medicine Man. He could see that Tian Fei had fallen in love with his youngest daughter and was happy with her good fortune.

Tian Fei was glad for this responsibility. He pledged to be back in three months whether he would succeed or not. At the same time, he felt sad at leaving Yue Ling, but was elated when he knew of Master Yue’s intention of marrying his favorite daughter to him.

After saying a farewell to Yue Ling, Tian Fei left the Yue house early next morning. Learned from the failures of the past search parties, he intended to sought out his teacher, ‘Sword God’, first. He was confident that his teacher was the best clue of the whereabouts of ‘Medicine Man’.

However, almost two months have passed by without him finding neither his teacher nor his junior martial brother. One day, he passed a group of ten, twelve rough-looking men fighting with two pretty women. Though small in numbers, both ladies evidently were far more skilled than those men were. Very soon, those thugs were all defeated. Some had run away; some had injuries; and some were lying unconscious. The girl in purple shirt was about to finish them off, but her older companion intervened.

“Second junior sister, let them go. They are just the lowly servants of the rapist Zhang Tin. We had the explicit order from the master to capture only him. Better keep them alive for information.”

The younger woman protested, “But we don’t have to keep them ALL alive, big senior sister.”

At that moment, they heard a sweet melody of flute. Soon, the flute player came into their views. He was a young man with a charming face, around 25-26 years old. He was clad in refined clothes. Behind him, a slightly older scholar carrying a fan followed from afar. The former stopped in front of the two ladies and asked indulgently, “I heard a couple of ladies would like my audience. Zhang Tin is my name. Wonder if these pretty ladies want to join me for some tea?”

Hearing a leering tone from this man, together with being a hot-tempered girl, Ah Lan leaped to attack the young man. Zhang Tin laughed, at the same time dodging the coming weapon easily. In five moves, he just jumped left and right to evade her attacks without defending back. The senior sister was more placate, so she stepped in and called off her junior sister. Looking at him contemplatively, she asked, “Are you the master of an infamous sect, ‘Love Palace’ and the third disciple of ‘Evil Sword’ Wang Shan?”

“Ha ha, we master-apprentice are honored to be recognized by the honorable sect like Emei. Hmm, if I’m right, you both must be two of the famous Four Beauties of Emei – Mei Lan Zhu Ju (Author’s note: plum, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum). Let’s see… that lady is your second junior sister, so she must be Ah Lan, and you must be Ah Mei. Too bad the other two misses are not here; otherwise I would have gained four more pretty followers, ha ha.”

Before another fight could have started, the scholar man had arrived. He bowed to both ladies politely, “My sincerest apologies to young misses. The junior brother had bad mouth, but he means no harms. My name is Di An, the second student of Master Wang Shan. Pray tell, what did we do to offend the Emei Sect of yours?”

Ah Lan couldn’t resist any longer. She cursed at both men and yelled out at the newcomer, “Don’t think that your sweet words can save your lives today. We are here to kill you two rapists.” With force, she launched at the scholar with her two daggers.

Seeing his second senior brother in danger, Zhang Tin flicked his flute to intercept the daggers. At the same time, he sent out a palm, hitting her left shoulder. She staggered back, crying out with pain. Happened that the palm was poisoned. In no time, she fell down on the ground, unconscious.

Di An was demonstrated at the sight. He reprimanded his junior brother while went to inspect her. Misunderstood that he was going to harm Ah Lan, Ah Mei left off the attack at Zhang Tin and turned to Di An instead. Zhang Tin took this opportunity to hit a pressure point on the back of Ah Mei, causing her to immobilize.

Out of the blue, a man emerged from a bush. He snapped his fingers, sending force to release Ah Mei; then he declared with disapproval, “Using poison was not a gentleman’s behavior. And what’s worse is to attack someone from the back.”

Zhang Tin lifted his eyes at the stranger. “What is that to you?” He snarled.

Tian Fei replied calmly, “Ha, I consider my business to punish my martial nephew for his crimes.”

Many years ago, when Tian Fei was still a boy, Wang Shan, the first disciple of ‘Sword God’ had stolen an important sword manual from his teacher. He then committed many terrible crimes, building an appalled reputation as a ruthless fighter; hence earning the title ‘Evil Sword’. ‘Sword God’ finally succeeded in tracking him down and subdued him. However, he could not bring himself to kill his favorite student, so he just broke a leg off Wang Shan, and denounced him from his school. After the incident, He had disappeared from the martial world. Who would have expected that he now got apprentices of his own and that at least one of them was following his footsteps?

Zhang Tin turned a little pale at witnessing the strong inner force from this stranger. He quickly retorted back, “Who is your nephew? I should be the one who be your old man.” While talking, he pointed the flute at Tian Fei and sent poison needles out from its mouth, targeting at his opponent’s heart.

However, Tian Fei had prepared for the move. Without taking his sword from its scabbard, he lifted it to parry the coming needles, lodging them in a row on a nearby tree. He then quickly intercepted Zhang Tin, who was trying to run away. Zhang Tin turned back and fought with all his might. Ah Mei, though was still stiff, ran over to her junior sister, who was still lying on the ground.

Di An was afraid that she would start attacking him again, picked Ah Lan up, and said, “Please trust me. I just gave this lady an antidote, but she needs to have the rest of poison purge out quickly. I will take good care of her and will send her back to Emei when she is well. Farewell.” With that, he flew away like lightning, carrying Ah Lan with him.

Concerned of her junior sister’s safety, Ah Mei followed swiftly after Di An. However, her light Kung Fu was much inferior to that of Di An; therefore, she at last lost both of them altogether. Spent out with physical fatigue and worries, she stopped to take a rest and decided to return to Emei, asking her master for help.

Meanwhile, Zhang Tin managed to escape by throwing poisonous smoke bombs at his opponent. When Tian Fei recovered from the slight effect of the poison, he decided to track down the two sisters as his first priority and let Zhang go for the time being. He had traveled swiftly for many days westward the west in the direction that Di An and Ah Mei had had gone, but did not see either of the parties.

One day, he ran into his junior brother, Liu Tong, at a wayside teashop. After some greetings, he asked Liu Tong the whereabouts of their teacher. To his chagrin, Liu Tong informed him that ‘Sword God’ had gone into one of his meditation caves and would likely not to come out till next year. Knowing that his teacher disliked to be disturbed during the meditation time, he could not help sighing disappointedly. Noticed the senior brother’s agitation, Liu Tong inquired him of the reasons.

“Hmm, to tell you the truth, I have found my girl, but she needed help from the Medicine Man. I had hoped that Teacher could help me find him. Anyway, how is Teacher? I haven’t seen him since he sent me to see Master Yue.”

“Oh, he was fine, still moody as usual. Actually, he sent me out to look for you. Teacher said that there was a possibility of somebody infiltrating at Yue House, so he wanted me to warn you to be careful. By the way, who is the girl? Is she one of Misses Yue? I heard that they both are very pretty.”

Hearing the news, Tian Fei’s heart beat anxiously. He thought of Lu Peng, and felt uneasy all of a sudden. He wanted to get back to the Yue House as soon as possible. However, he was now facing a dilemma of finding the two Emei disciples as well. Thinking over carefully, he enlisted for Liu Tong’s help.

“Sure, no problem at all. Let senior brother go back to Yue House, and I will continue to track down those two ladies. If I meet that evil Zhang, I will teach him a thing or two as well.” Liu Tong agreed good-naturedly.

“Well, be careful. Zhang Tin’s martial arts were nothing to be spoken about, but he is very crafty. He uses various poisons and doesn’t fight fairly like you. Thank you, junior brother.”

The two martial brothers then took leaves of each other. One headed north, and one changed his course to the west.

Thumbs up

This is excellent, Goofy. Keep up the great work! I really like your characterization and detailed description of the mood, scenery, fighting scenerios, different types of kungfu used. Great names too. Nicely woven piece of work.

It's hard for me to place some of the actors you've chosen to play your characters though. Many of them from the older generation... can't imagine Adam as a main character lead now that he's already in his 40s to 50s. Oh well! Just a personal preference thing... I'll imagine my own set of actors playing them instead.

Good day for story.

Part I: Book of Sword

Chapter 4
The New Couples

Characters list (not in particular order):
Ah Mei ............ Au Yeung Pai San
Ah Lan ............ Michelle Mei Suet
Zhang Tin ......... Eddie Cheng Siu Fai
Di An ............. Damian Lau Chong Yun

Ah Lan opened her eyes and found herself covered snugly in a thick blanket on a dry ground. She looked around and saw a strange man arranging a big pile of firewood. The man turned around, smiled at her, and spoke, “So, Miss has waken up. How are you feeling? Are you hungry? I am about to heat the soup for us. No, no! Don’t try to get up. The poisoned has been purged out from your system, but your body is still weak. Stay there, and I’ll bring you the food.”

Shocking, she recognized that this man was the senior brother of the RAPIST Zhang Tin. Automatically, she inspected her body furtively under the blanket. To her relief, she didn’t find a sign of being violated. Flushing red, she tried to get up, but was too weak to even shake off her cover. Unconcerned of her apparent discomfort, Di An continued with his job while softly humming a song. When the soup was done, he poured some into a wooden bowl and brought it to her bed. Seeing that she was unable to hold a spoon, he hand-fed her little by little till the soup was gone.

Ah Lan suddenly burst into tears. Nobody had ever been so caring and gentle to her like this man before. Back at Emei, she was known as the most willful and the hottest-tempered disciple; therefore, not many fellow sisters wanted to befriend with her. Among the top four favorite students of Xun Ci Shi Tai, Master of Emei Sect, she was often left alone. Her senior sister, Ah Mei, though kind, was too serious at times, and her two junior sisters were always doing childish things together. Priestess Xun Ci, though loved her students, was not a delicate person. Weary from emotional and physical conditions, she finally drifted off to sleep.

Di An had never met a girl like this before. One minute she looked so fierce, and the next minute she was crying like a child. He could feel the loneliness from her heart and yearned to fulfill it with love, but discarded the notion quickly. ‘How could I think of that? My master and my martial brothers are the evil men everyone hates. I don’t dare to pull her down with me.’ He thought sadly.

Ah Lan learned to trust him more every day. Unlike his master and his martial brothers, he was a real gentleman with a good heart. He was kind and very learned in books. He told her that he was to take an examination for a government position soon.

She also found that he had no martial art skills other than the light Kung Fu. “So I don’t have to harm people. When there is trouble, I just run.” Di An told her jokingly. Actually, he refused to learn sword fight because he didn’t want to be a killing tool for his master like his junior brother, Zhang Tin. Knowing this, she was impressed and grew fonder at him everyday.

Di An forgot how long he had had such enjoyable conversations. Though a tough girl outside, she was in fact a sensitive woman with a lonesome soul. Ever since he had discovered that she loved reading and writing poems, they spent happy times reciting and creating verses to each other.

When Ah Lan was able to walk, Di An decided that it’s time to escort her back to Emei. By now, the two youngsters realized that they fell in love with each other. She did not want to go, but he thought it was for the best.

On the last night at their cave, Ah Mei found them sitting so intimately together. “Ah Lan!” She called out with relief. She was glad to see that her second junior sister was all right.

Afraid that Ah Mei would harm Di An, Ah Lan stepped up in front of him. “Senior sister! Please don’t hurt him. He has saved my life.” She begged.

Ah Mei drew a sharp breath, surprised at the turn of the event. She looked at the couple and understood what had happened. ‘Oh, no! Why must we two sisters have the same fate – love the men who should not be loved?’ She thought bitterly.

Five days ago, while on her way back to Emei, she had run into Zhang Tin again. This time, he was less arrogant, more polite, and very much charming. Instead of fighting, he had surrendered himself and had given her an antidote for her junior sister. On top of that, he had offered to take her to his second senior brother’s hideout, reassuring her at the same time of Ah Lan’s safety. During the trip, he had kept playing sweet melodies from his flute. Ah Mei loved music and was herself a talented lute player. So it’s no wonder that she began to feel sorry for him.

Zhang Tin was an experienced man when it came to women. He knew what women liked and what they wanted. The first time that he set eyes on Ah Mei, he was very impressed with the gentleness and the serene feeling that radiated from her. He knew that he could never win her by force; thus he went through the act of atonement to get her sympathy.

Spending most of her life at Emei, Ah Mei though the oldest apprentice was also the most naïve one. She had never talked to any man at such length as she did with Zhang Tin, and she had never heard so many praises or sweet words just for her from anyone else before. The longer they traveled together, the more she hoped that the journey would never end.

Yesterday, Zhang Tin had confessed his love to her. She was equally shocked to discover that she was also in love with him. Decided to put the matters at rest, she had left him and traveled alone along the map he had given her.

Wordlessly, she led her junior sister away. Both walked in silence, each thought of the loved one whom they had left behind.

All the way, Ah Mei kept hearing a sound of flute. At nights she tossed and turned, unable to sleep. All she could think of was the charming smile of Zhang Tin. One night, he appeared in her room at an inn, begging her not to go back to Emei. He declared that he was turning a new leaf and wanted her to go live with him as a normal couple.

Being a kind-hearted person, she couldn’t bear to turn him down. She had always been a serious and a dedicated person. When she loved, she loved with all her heart. And she believed that he loved her so too. After all, how could an innocent girl like her not fall into a snare of his sweet talks?

Ah Lan woke up to receive a letter stating that her senior sister had gone away with Zhang Tin for a peaceful life outside the martial world. She looked at the letter with tears and made a decision. She wrote another letter, bound it with the one from Ah Mei, and asked an innkeeper to send them to Emei.

Wonder if anyone is ing this story?

Part I: Book of Sword

Chapter 5
Crimes of Love

Characters list (not in particular order):
Tian Fei .............. Adam Cheng Siu Chow
Yue Gao ............... Lau Dan
Yue Ling .............. Gigi Chiu Ngar Chi
Yue Feng .............. Lisa Wang Ming Chuen
Lu Peng ............... Kong Wah

The spring was in the air. Birds were singing, and wild flowers were blooming in the morning sun. Yue Feng looked at the waterfall in front of her and was reminiscent of the moment Tian Fei holding her in his arms. With the memory of him, she remembered her sister with bitterness. Suddenly, Lu Peng appeared. He grinned happily and gave her an oblong jewelry box. “Open it.”

Curious, she opened the box and took out a golden hairpin, decorated lavishly with rows of pink pearls. While she was marveled at its beauty, Lu Peng said, “I had it make specially for you as my engagement gift.”

Yue Feng stunned. She couldn’t believe her ears. “What do you mean? Whose engagement gift?” Her voice was shrilled with fears.

“Why! Our engagement, of course! I’ve asked Teacher for your hands in marriage, and he agreed.” Unable to resist, he added, “What’s more, Teacher will marry sister Ling to Tian Fei when he comes back.”

“But that… that’s impossible. How could she? She’s just a simpleton! She’s half-crazy, half-idiot! I… I…” This was the worst news in her life.

“But that’s what Teacher plans, Feng-er. And you’d better forget about Tian Fei. You are to be my wife pretty soon.” Lu Peng sneered, clenching his fists with jealous.

“But… but… senior brother Lu, I can’t marry you. I don’t love you. I… I’ll tell Father, and he’ll understand. Yue Feng stammered, pushing the gift back to him. In her agitation, she accidentally knocked the hairpin down into the raging waterfall.

Lu Peng turned pale then darkened with rage. Everything had been working well according to his plan, and nothing, even his love, would destroy this opportunity. He pushed Yue Feng onto the ground and started kissing her wildly.

“Once you are mine, you will have to marry me anyway, dear Feng-er.” Realizing with horror of his intention, she tried to force him off with all her strength, while threatening to tell her father of this disgusting conduct.

Lu Peng laughed madly. “Feng-er, if you tell Teacher about us, then I’ll tell him of the real reason of Ah Ling’s illness.”

Yue Feng’s limbs went weak suddenly. She asked fearfully, “What… what do you mean?”

“I mean that I saw you pour something in Ah Ling’s cup of tea on the eve of her fever. I picked up the wrapping paper that you had thrown away and had it analyzed. It contained a poison that could make a person sick with fever.”

“I… I didn’t mean to make her like this. I honestly didn’t. I just wanted to make her a little sick…”, she confessed, panicked.

“I know, Feng-er. You and I are alike. We try to get what we want no matter how. Believe me, I really love you. I will make you a happy wife. You will have everything that Ah Ling has and more.” Lu Peng started taking her clothes off piece by piece. He eyed lustfully at the beautiful body in front before moving down.

Yue Feng stopped struggling. She knew that she was trapped. Tears flew down her face silently as she let Lu Peng move on top of her.

It was late afternoon when Yue Feng finally came down from the hill. She was pale but dried-eyed with a new determination in her heart. A loving Feng-er had gone, and a ruthless Yue Feng was born. She smiled viciously. ‘I’ll get revenge. Yes, anyone who takes Tian Fei from me will be regret.’

That night, she took a thorough bath, trying to rid of the unpleasant memory of this morning. She flinched at the thought of Lu Peng’s touch. “I hate you, Lu Peng. You will pay dearly for this crime.” She whispered ferociously to herself and started to plan revenge.

The next morning brought good news of Tian Fei’s arrival. Yue Ling ran out joyously to greet her ‘Big Brother’, and Yue Feng watched the reunion with harden heart. She believed that the heaven was on her side to deliver the man she loved for her plan. “Tian Fei, you’ll be mine soon.” She promised with an evil smile.

Unknowing of his fate, Tian Fei was ecstasy to see his beloved Ling-er again. Yesterday, when passing through a town, he noticed a jewelry stall on a street. He went over and bought a piece of white jade in a shape of flower. The seller told him that the jade could be separated into two pieces – one as a flower bud and another as a leaf. He intended to give the flower part to Ling-er for their engagement, and matched it with the jade leaf on their marriage night.

That night, Yue Feng came to congratulate his engagement with Yue Ling. “Thank you, sister Feng. Please call me brother now that we are going to be related.” He answered warmly, drinking a cup of tea that she offered.

After she had left, he felt light-headed, then was hot all over. Someone opened the bedroom door and walked in. She smiled at him and called out, “Big Brother”. Tian Fei reached out and pulled her down on the bed with him. He was floating in heaven with happiness, “My Ling-er.”

Lu Peng came in the room with smiles. ‘Women!’, he thought arrogantly. It was just yesterday that he bedded her, and now Yue Feng had already called him to her bedroom. He eyed at the food on the table with pleasure and sat down on a chair confidently. He poured himself a cup of wine and immediately went unconscious. At that moment, Yue Feng stepped out from behind the curtains and raised a knife, stabbing at his face several times. She then swung the blood stained knife and chopped down at his lower abdomen, laughing with satisfactory. Next, she dragged him to the hothouse and arranged him next to the sleeping Yue Ling. After that, she wiped some blood away, put the knife into her sister’s hand, woke her up, and left silently.

Yue Ling slowly opened her eyes. She was having a strange dream. She was in a room with Big Brother. He had kissed her lovingly and hugged her gently. She had had a blissful experience and could not understand why she was now lying on the ground with a blood-covered knife in her hand. She turned and saw a body of Lu Peng and screamed shrilly.

Tian Fei heard the scream and woke up to find Yue Feng on the bed with him. From that second, his dream had shattered. ‘How could that be? I was with Ah Ling. Ling-er was here. Ling-er was here.’ His thoughts were running back and forth. On the bed, Yue Feng stirred and woke up. She looked at him and smiled happily. “Brother Tian, I didn’t know you loved me too. I’ll tell Father about our marriage right away.”

Stunned, Tian Fei could do nothing but standing there, and that’s what the servants saw when they came to fetch him for Master Yue.

Master Yue was having a heart pain again. It was a night of full moon. He took his medicine and went to bed early. When he heard his youngest daughter’s screams, he grabbed his saber from the bedside and ran swiftly to the source of sound. There, he saw his favorite daughter kneeling over a naked body of a man with a mutilated face. She was holding a blood-soaked knife, and she looked bewildered. There weren’t any recognition of her father in the eyes. “Red water is everywhere.” She whispered and fainted.
