The first three episodes were so good! I love the cast, and ZLY and CX look terrific on-screen. ZLY is so adorable and her acting is always solid. I hope the quality continues for the rest of the series.

Agreed, there's something oddly captivating about Gao Zhan and Lu Zhen's relationship that I honestly had not expected from seeing the somewhat hectic trailer. It's pleasantly simple and Lu Zhen is also a much stronger character than I would have thought. She has this sort of straightforward, heroic air about her that in a sense makes her seem manlier in spirit than even Gao Zhan. I'm completely addicted with the relationship dynamics and am already downloading episodes 4-6!

I'm very happy that Chen Xiao is not over-acting much. That was what I was most afraid of. His acting is still not as solid as ZLY's, but I'm hoping he gets better as the drama goes on.

I'm watching this without english subs even though my chinese isn't so good...can someone explain the whole medicine ordeal? I think the Dowager Empress sent the bowl to Gao Zhan and there was something suspicious about it?

The empress dowager requested the imperial physicians to soak Gao Zhan's medicine in Deinagkistrodon acutus venom, a slow-acting poison that would take 3 months to take effect. Normally, he drinks a few sips of the medicine so that he'll "pass" the imperial physician's daily checkups (in other words, so the imperial physician won't notice that Gao Zhan is aware of the poison and report that back to the empress dowager). However, this time in order to prevent the emperor from drinking the poison, Gao Zhan actually drank the whole bowl. That's why Gao Zhan immediately requested salt water to induce himself to vomit, so that he could lessen the intake of the poison. He then tells the servant to report back to the empress dowager that his reaction to the medicine was so severe this time that he even vomited in the courtyard. Thus in order not to cause too much suspicion, the empress dowager should have the imperial physicians change it to a less potent type, which would gain Gao Zhan an extra 2 months of time on top of the original 3 to garner military support from the Qihu tribe and solidify his military backing.
