Chapter 12: Revenge

As Lin Xiu Lan sat in a cave she heard laughter from a hot spring nearby. Noiselessly, she moved from the cave and cautiously approached the hot pool with steaming vapor rising leisurely from it. She stopped behind a big bush of azalea and peeked through its thick branches.

She saw the backs of two men talking to each other merrily. With the usual curiosity, she listened to the conversation with interest.

One man was telling the other man of his experience with thieves and such. He added, "Actually, today I have met an extraordinary girl with a very good light kung fu. But I was a little better than she was, so I managed to retrieve the stolen gold coins from her."

His companion was interested. "Really, what did you do to her then? Sent her to jail?"

The first man shook his head. "No, she seemed so young and guileless. I decided to give her a few spankings and let her go. That should be enough to scare her off this area."

His friend was amused. "Really… It seems that nowadays little girls become thieves. I met one too, but at least this one was collecting from another thief. I have this bitten finger to remember her by." He lifted his finger to show to the first man.

They both laughed at their funny experiences and changed to another subject.

Lin Xiu Lan was elated at finding both of her enemies together. She thought hard of how to get revenge on them. Just then, the men took off their clothes and decided to swim in the hot spring.

"Ah! This is heaven indeed." One man exclaimed, and the other agreed. "After a tiring day of protecting innocents, this water feels great."

Lin Xiu Lan laughed inwardly. She thought, 'If you like the place so much, you can stay in there forever.'

Stealthily, she crept toward the men's attires and then with quick hands, she snatched the clothes and ran quickly back behind the bush. The hot steam camouflaged her movement, and noises of night animals and running water covered her light footsteps.

However, both men sensed something was amiss. They hurriedly got out of the spring, but could not find their clothing.

"Yoo-hoo! Is Anybody there?" The girl called out.

With startled faces, they raced back into the pool again. With hope owner of the voice would change her mind and leave the place.

Lin Xiu Lan giggled with mirth. Her giggle soon broke into a loud laugh. She laughed till tears ran down her face. "Ha-ha. Ha-ha."

The two hapless men in the pool heard Lin Xiu Lan and they shouted angrily. "Who's there? Show your self."

Lin Xiu Lan stepped from behind the bush with their outfits in her hands. "I already have what I wanted." She said laughingly. "Do you remember me? I'm Lin Xiu Lan, and I am here to take revenge."

She pointed at one man, who immediately ducked as deep as he could under the hot stream. "You and You!" She turned to the other man. "You have some nerve! You hit me. I have never been spanked before in my life, and now it's time you get it back." She pulled out a whip and lashed out haphazardly at the two naked men in the pool.

Although the men had high kung fu, under this circumstance, what could they really do? Each man only tried to dodge from the whip, not daring to do anything rashly that could result in exposing his body.

Goofy:

"Special you. You beat me. I have never been spanked before, and now it's time you get it back."
Don't you mean "Especially you!"

Chapter 13: No Laughing Matter

Lin Xiu Lan laughed triumphantly knowing her two enemies were caught in a vulnerable spot. But when she raised her whip to strike at them again, she felt a tug from the other end of the whip. Before she could turn to see what or who was at the other end, she felt immobilized. Her limbs would not listen to her command anymore. Someone had sneaked up on her and tapped her pressure points on her back before she could counterattack the move or even detect their presence.

“Who’s there? Who came and spoiled my fun?” Lin Xiu Lan asked with an undeniable tone of irritation.

“Why it is I, Lin Hong Ye, your older sister, who has come to teach you a lesson in respect,” said Lin Hong Ye as she revealed herself in front of Lin Xiu Lan. She proceeded to remove the whip from her hand and the clothes from the other.

“Hey! Just because we share the same surname, doesn’t give you the right to come here and acknowledge family relations foolishly like that! Free me at once and give me back my stuff!” Lin Xiu Lan retorted back as she still stood with one arm raised with a hand holding an non-existent whip.

Lin Hong Ye came closer to the men, who still sat and soaked in the waters of the hot spring, with only the top half of their body exposed to the open air. She couldn’t help blush as she passed their clothes over to them and caught a glimpse of the droplets of steam dripping off their bare and muscular chest and back. She awkwardly turned her back away and faced Lin Xiu Lan.

“What’s the matter, Lin Hong Ye? Haven’t you seen naked men before?” Lin Xiu Lan said mockingly and laughed at her.

“No. Of course not! You like to laugh at people so much, I’ll let you laugh to your heart’s content,” said Lin Hong Ye flustered, her face still blushed pink nearly matching her light pink robe that she wore beneath her outer white robe with intricate patterns red embroidered flowers on the rim the robe.

Lin Hong Ye quickly unsealed the pressure points immobilizing Lin Xiu Lan, only to press another pressure point at her waist, which sent her reeling into an uncontrollable laughter. At that time, the two men had dressed and walked out to meet the two young ladies. One had her back facing the men, and the other was rolling on the ground with laughter.

“Miss Lin (Lin gu niang), how did you find me here?” Miao Ting Feng asked her.

“So this is the Miss Lin Hong Ye, you told me about. She must have tracking instincts like a hunting hound,” said Chen Gu Xing in jest.

Lin Hong Ye breathed a deep breathe and turned around anxiously feeling her cheeks. “Actually, I was just getting settled at inn, when there was a knock at my doors. I opened the doors and it turned out to be the waiter. Someone instructed him to deliver these letters to you, but since he can’t leave the in during working hours, he asked me to deliver them,” explained Lin Hong Ye as she took out two letters.
“You mean someone knew our whereabouts?” Chen Gu Xing asked, showing just a hint of surprise on his pale and slim face.

“Yes. I asked the waiter and he told me that a strange lady and man came one after the other,” answered Lin Hong Ye.

Chen Gu Xing and Miao Ting Feng glanced at each other and both guessed who the waiter had met, and they were completely sure the sender of these letters were none other than their teachers. “Shifu!” Both men said their guess aloud and laughed.

“Hey! Come here and make me stop laughing, please! If you don’t, I’ll tell them why your cheeks are red,” said Lin Xiu Lan threateningly between her laughter.

Upon hearing those words, Lin Hong Ye quickly denied Lin Xiu Lan's threats as nonsense and left after excusing herself.

Chapter 14 The Trio

Chen Gu Xing and Miao Ting Feng turned around and remembered the originator of their trouble. Chen Gu Xing walked over Lin Xiu Lan, who, at that moment, was rolling on the ground from laughing too hard and unsealed her laughing acupuncture point. At the same time, he grabbed her shoulders and nodded to Miao Ting Feng, who immediately grabbed her feet. Then they called, "One, Two, Three." At the last word, they threw Lin Xiu Lan into the hot pool.

Lin Xiu Lan was sent with force into the steaming water, and the next second found her trying to emerge to the surface.

"Help! I can't swim. Help!" She cried, struggling in the pool. Her body went under the water again. This time she didn't come up.

The two men looked at each other and without any words, each dove into the hot spring, looking for the drowning girl.

To their surprises, they heard a laugh above them. When they shot out from under the pool, the saw their supposedly victim sat on a tree branch, grinning at them.

"I might not be good with releasing pressure points, but no one can match me in breathing under water. Hey, big brothers, let us be friends. In my business, it was said that if the foe is stronger than you, then befriend with him. My name is Lin Xiu Lan, and I am from the Ghost Forest." She glanced at Chen Gu Xing's pouch which was still laid on the ground and quickly jumped down from the tree and snatched it open.

"Don't! It's dangerous." Chen Gu Xing warned but it was too late. His two pets were already moving onto the arm of Lin Xiu Lan.

Once again, he was astonished by this girl. Not only his fierce pets didn't try to bite the girl, they also appeared friendly to her. He gained a sudden admiration at her bravery.

Lin Xiu Lan looked at his amazed expression and grinned good humorly.

"I have six teachers, and they all are good with detecting poisons. I have a pet tiger who could withstand any type of poison. I grew up playing with poison, so your two pets wouldn't dare to harm me. They are cute, so for their sakes, I will let you win this round."

Chen Gu Xing could not help smiling at her generous offer. Surely, a girl who could tame his animals could not be at all bad. He turned to his friend and asked for the opinion. "What do you think, brother Miao?"

Miao Ting Feng shrugged. He had been observing Lin Xiu Lan's light kungfu and was impressed by her speed. He spoke coldly. "Since you are so magnanimous to us, let me be a gentleman in exchange. If you will parley with me and can come up unharm within ten moves, we both will call you the winner."

Lin Xiu Lan considered the challenge and nodded with mischievous air. Then the duel began.

Miao Ting Feng started with simple sword stance, which the girl easily dodged to the left. Suddenly, the move changed and the sword in his hand veered to where Lin Xiu Lan stood in lightening speed. Undauntedly, Lin Xiu Lan jumped back but found the sword was there again, covering the upper body of hers. As quick as the sword came, she dropped down on the ground and twisted her feet to kick out at the sword above her head.

Unexpected at this ingenious attack, Miao Ting Feng acclaimed, "good." Then he launched a new attack to the girl. This time, the moves were slow but more deadly, as they targeted at the dangerous points on the opponant's body.

Lin Xiu Lan didn't even blink her eyes. Within mere seconds, she pulled out her whip and threw it toward the coming sword. It coiled around the sword neatly. Then she pulled the sword in.

Turned out it was a ruse to make Miao Ting Feng abandon his attack and focus more on protecting his own weapon. While he was using his energy to pull off the sword from the clinging whip, Lin Xiu Lan reached for her needles by her free hand and threw them at him. Miao Ting Feng evaded the needles just when they about to lodge on his chest by lifting the sword up to meet with them.

The needles struck at the sword and fell on the ground. At that point, Lin Xiu Lan released her whip, uncoiled the sword, and announced triumphantly. "Ten moves already. And I am the winner."

Miao Ting Feng could not speak for a full minute. Then he laughed as he had never laughed before. "I have never fallen into such trick before in my life. You are indeed the winner, little sister."

Then he introduced himself. "My name is Miao Ting Feng, and this is Chen Gu Xing. If you don't mind, let us be brothers and sister."

Chen Gu Xing agreed. "Then it wouldn't be wrong for a brother to punish his little sister." He joked.

Lin Xiu Lan rubbed her nose and concurred. "All right. It's good for business to have some protection from two big men. Just keep away from my fifth teacher, that's all. She loves handsome men like you two."

The men turned embarrassed at her direct remark but soon got over it as they saw that she was in earnest.

Hence, the friendships of the trio began.

Chapter 15: The Enemy is No Stranger

The sun had just started setting as travelers began to crowd about in The Purple Dragon Inn. Within the hour there were more travelers coming into stay overnight. At a corner of the inn's restaurant, three new sworn brothers and sister waited patiently for their wine to come while they talk happily to each other. Miao Ting Feng never had dreamed he’d have someone call him brother again but after this day, a silent wish had came true. Chen Gu Xing and Lin Xiu Lan were now his sworn brother and sister. The new bond and kinship between them, gave him a feeling he had forgotten years ago when his family died. He had also experienced another feeling when Lin Hong Ye appeared as well. Especially when his and her eyes connected in the same gaze, he felt warm and peaceful feeling, still unclear to him. Yet, Ting Feng felt as if he had been reborn and was now relearning how human emotions felt but something kept his real emotions to express freely. His ambition to kill the one responsible for his family’s death. Whoever that person was, had a wide masculine structure and a distinctive mole on the left side of the chin. It was the only details he remembered all these years.

Ting Feng looked up and noticed that his sworn brother was wearing a different facial mask. Curiosity began to sprout in Miao Ting Feng’s mind. ‘What does Brother Chen have hidden behind that mask of his? Although, he had explained to me that the kung fu he practices destroys his facial appearance...yet something tells me that there are far more things, my new brother is hiding aside from his true face,’ Ting Feng thought to himself.

Still, he did not want his suspicions to ruin his new brotherly friendship. Immediately shook the suspicions way. When Ting Feng had paid more attention to what Gu Xing and Xiu Lan was talking about, he noticed they were talking about the very thing he was thinking about.

“Ge ge, come on! Take the mask off,” pleaded Xiu Lan.

Chen Gu Xing figured it was useless trying to argue with a girl like Lin Xiu Lan and decided to cooly sit back, smile and shake his head.

“Ge ge! I really want to see how scary your face really is!”

“Xiu Lan mei, If you really saw his face and it was just as scary as he had said. Wouldn’t that scary you?” Ting Feng joined in the conversation.

“Scare? I thirst for a good scare! It’s what gives life excitement, Miao ge ge!”

“Ah...talking about thirst...where are those pints of wine we ordered?” asked Gu Xing.

“Xiao Er!(Waiter!) Xiao Er! Where is that Xiao Er?” shouted Xiu Lan.

While Ting Feng drummed the table with his fingers. Then suddenly a huge jug of Red Maiden’s wine appeared on their table.

“The waiters are too busy waiting on the new guests now. Besides, you three can’t expect to drink without a fourth person like me joining in for more merriment, huh?” she asked.

“Lin Hong Ye gu niang, what a pleasant surprise!” said Gu Xing.

“Indeed, it is!” agreed Ting Feng.

“Sit down, Sit down,” said Gu Xing.

“Aye! I still haven’t taken revenge on her for doing what she did to me earlier!” Xiu Lan complained and frowned.

“Xiu Lan mei, your not that small hearted are you? It was really harmless,” said Ting Feng.

“Here let me offer you a cup of wine to show my true apologies,” said Hong Ye as she poured a cup for Xiu Lan, who was sitting across from her, and a cup for herself.

Xiu Lan stared at the cup for a while and considered if she’d really forgive Hong Ye until Ting Feng stepped on her foot ‘lightly’. She picked up the cup and drank.

The two men laughed and also poured themselves a cup of wine and drank joyously as well. Then suddenly group of men came barging in demanding people to leave their tables. Luckily, the four of them were on another level of the restaurant with a good view of the lower level.

“I wonder who they are,” said Hong Ye.

“They must belong to a sect or cult,” suggested Ting Feng as he noticed they were all wearing a blue-green uniform.

“I feel like playing a good trick on them,” Xiu Lan said with passion.

Out of the four, only Chen Gu Xing knew who those men were and whom those men were waiting for. As if on cue, a very proud young man with an arrogant way paraded in along with his entourage of women on each arm. Soon after an older man with bits of white and gray growing in his black hair join the young man.

As Miao Ting Feng watched the old and the young man drank their wine, he then noticed a mole upon the older man’s chin. Ting Feng also realize that the face of the older man was not of a stranger as well. Great anger and hatred fused inside him as his eyes gave a piercing stare at his enemy, wanting to kill. Hong Ye also noticed his action and poured him a cup of wine to ease his anger. With one hand holding the cup of wine at table level and the other hand clenching into a fist until white. He was furious. Not only was his enemy not a stranger, the enemy was a friend of his family, Chen Zheng Ren. Thinking it was not time to act rash, he drank the cup of wine. Hoping to calm the heat of his anger down.

Chapter 16: Family Business

Miao Ting Feng did not move, but the younger man did. In amidst of his drinking, he suddenly noticed the two heavenly beauties sitting on the next table.

Chen Zheng Ren noticed this and grabbed his son's hand before he did anything irrational. But his son broke free and leapt right behind Lin Xiu Lan.

Before any of them could react, he placed an arm around her waist and exclaimed shamelessly, "Hello pretties. Let's give your Brother Chen a kiss!" The aroma of alcohol hung about him, he was obviously drunk.

Then as if in a chain reaction, Lin Xiu Lan slapped him, followed by Lin Hong Ye, then Miao Ting Feng and Chen Gu Xing together.

The young man surnamed Chen fell backwards and got up rubbing his red cheeks, screaming, "How dare you slap me? No one has ever slapped me, Chen Sheng Tian, ever before except for my father, how dare you slap me?"

To this, the four just merely laughed and continued their conversation. But Lin Hong Ye and Chen Gu Xing started to shift to hide their faces.

Chen Sheng Tian was furious. "I'll teach you to hit me! I will..." but before he could finish the sentence, a palm came across his face and he received his fifth slap.

Neither Miao Ting Feng, Chen Gu Xing, Lin Hong Ye nor Lin Xiu Lan expected this. Chen Zheng Ren had gotten up and pulled his drunken son back, calling him "You beast!" and apologized, "Sorry. It is my fault that I have raised such a spoilt son. I will leave now!"

Lin Hong Ye breathed a sigh of relief but that caught the attention of Chen Zheng Ren. He reached over and grabbed by the back of her dress, pulling her away.

Lin Xiu Lan banged her fist upon the table and shouted, "How dare big man like you bully young girls like us? I am going to teach you a lesson, or my surname is not Lin!"

And saying so, she released a handful of golden needles at him and leapt over the table. But even at this close distance, Chen Zheng Ren evaded all of her needles and deflected them with flicks of his fingers.

Then before Lin Xiu Lan could physically attack him, Chen Zheng Ren grabbed her shoulder joint and twisted her hand backwards, forcing her to lean on the table. And all this time, he was still holding onto Lin Hong Ye.

To this, he exclaimed, "Miss, please stay out of this. This is business concerning my family. You are not qualified to intercept!"
Chen Gu Xing couldn't stand it anymore. He stood up and exclaimed, "But I am!

Chen Zheng Ren seemed surprised at this sudden outburst from a stranger with so much hate in his eyes. But especially when the stranger continued, “You don’t know who I am, do you? Then maybe you will know my mother’s name is Fang Ah Ling!”

Chen Zheng Ren’s face went pale at the name and his fingers loosened and his alertness weakened. But Lin Hong Ye took this chance and bit him on the hand. As soon as the grip on her was released, she sped forward, spinning around to face Chen Zheng Ren.

Cheng Zheng Ren dared not move, as head locked in her arm, was his precious but spoiled son, Chen Sheng Tian. With her other hand, she had taken out her hairpin and held it pointing at his neck.

“Let me and my friends go or prepare a coffin for your son!” she threatened. Chen Sheng Tian was so drunk that he did not realize he was being held hostage and kept repeating, “Give me a kiss pretty!”

Chen Zheng Ren breathed deeply then reluctantly released Lin Xiu Lan, who was so furious that she turned around and kicked her attacker in the buttocks, sending him crashing to the floor.

Miao Ting Feng saw the expression on Chen Gu Xing’s face and knew something personal had been ignited, especially when he compared the surnames: “Chen” and “Chen”, but knew it was not the moment to ask. He knew very well that Chen Zheng Ren was ruthless at times and quite hard to escape from.

Meanwhile, another person revealed shocking words. Chen Sheng Tian looked up at his captivator, pausing for a moment then exclaiming, “Hey, I know you! You’re my wife! Give a little kiss and let your hubby give you a great big hug!”

Miao Ting Feng was shocked. What? That useless piece of rubbish? Her husband? But Chen Gu Xing gripped his arm hard and gave an eye signal. He understood and leapt at the girls. Grabbing their arms, they jumped out of the opened windows out of the street. In mid-air, Lin Xiu Lan gave Chen Sheng Tian a no less painful kick than that of which she gave his father, and he landed on some pedestrians on the street.

Chen Zheng Ren immediately jumped down to the ground and went to look at his son. Chen Sheng Tian was busy intimately hugging a person he had landed on, then immediately pushed him aside when he saw that he was holding a male, “Eww. Get away! You’re not my wife, when is she?” And with a silly perverted grin on his face, he stumbled around as if he was walking on a ship, checking everywhere for his wife. By the time Chen Zheng Ren had picked up his son, the four were long gone!

Chapter 17: A Scholar

Two men and two women came to stop at the outskirts of the town. Lin Xiu Lan rebuked her two brothers. “Why do we have to run away? You two could easily handle those despicable dogs. At least I gave them some good kicks!” She chuckled to herself. Unknown to everyone else, she did add a special ingredient with the second kick of her. ‘Something to remember me by.’ Then she turned to Lin Hong Ye. “Sister Lin, are you really that drunkard’s wife? But I would run out of him too if I were you.” She knew it was a cruel joke but couldn’t resist it. After all, this girl sealed her pressure point last night. Lin Xiu Lan was always the one who remembered all revenge and gratitude.

Lin Hong Ye blushed then went pale like a piece of paper, and Miao Ting Feng came to her rescue. “What nonsense is that? You said he was drunk, so of course his words couldn’t be true.” He scolded his sworn sister who stuck out her tongue at him and immediately hid behind Chen Gu Xing. That was the good point of having two sworn brothers so that when one was angry at her, the other could protect her. Well, unless she managed to ire both of them, of course.

Chen Gu Xing tried to smooth things up. His keen eyes took in the discomfort of Lin Hong Ye and was puzzled, but he said nothing. After all, everyone had his own secret, like him for instance. He smiled and praised his sworn sister instead. “Your kicks were good ones. I can tell that your teachers were marvelous to teach the monkey like you something worthwhile.” He winked to Miao Ting Feng who was quick to take his hint.

“Yeh, can you teach us those moves? So, we would know how to deal with you next time.” Miao Ting Feng disregarded his sworn sister’s tease. Nobody could remain sane if he took this imp seriously words for words.

Lin Xiu Lan pouted. “You two are teasing me again. All right, I am sorry, Lin Hong Ye. I know you can’t have anything to do with that turtle. After all, there is my handsome brother here.” Lin Hong Ye turned pink from embarrassment, and Miao Ting Feng choked. He was drinking from the water pouch at the moment and it was the first time he lost his coolness in front of other people.

Chen Gu Xing smiled. The life would never be bored with Lin Xiu Lan!

At that point, they heard someone shouting. “Help! Robbers!”

Without delay, the four sped to the scene of the crime. There, they saw a nice looking young man in scholar attire with a big sachet on his shoulder. However, there were no assailants in sight. The man’s face was white from fear. He wiped his sweats and greeted the four friends politely.

“Huh, you all just came in time. I was about to be robbed, but those bandits suddenly ran when they heard you coming.” It was rather illogical explanation but the four could hardly believed that this weak looking youth lied out of fun. He looked evidently scared and he seemed to have a lot of riches with him. Lin Xiu Lan eyed his big sachet and from old habits could not help wanting to take a peek in it.

Chen Gu Xing shrugged. “We didn’t really do anything. Just hope you are all right.”

The young man bowed countless times to him. “I would have died by now if you hadn’t appeared.” He reached inside his shirt and took out a big ingot of gold. “Please receive this as my gratitude.”

The two brothers were about to refuse the gold, but Lin Xiu Lan is quicker than them when it came to money business. She snatched it out of the scholar’s hand and smiled enchantingly at him. “Of course, we are always pleased to help.” She put the gold inside her shirt and smiled challengingly at her sworn brothers. They would have to strip her to get that gold ingot back. In her mind, she already imaged the presents she could buy for her six teachers.

Chen Gu Xing looked at Miao Ting Feng and sighed. Oh, well. If that young man was rich enough to squander his money on anyone, it was not really their business. Both knew the nature of Lin Xiu Lan and understood that they could not merely use sheer force on her.

They turned their backs and motioned the other two girls to follow them. To their surprise, the stranger also trailed after the company. The two men paid him no attention. They saw the stunned look he had for Lin Xiu Lan and concluded that their sworn sister just gained an admirer. They had the same thought. ‘Poor man, he didn’t know what he is falling into.’

Unaware of the amused glances between her two sworn brothers, Lin Xiu Lan was the only one who slowed her paces and let the scholar to catch up with her. Then she chatted friendly. Her intention was to lure the young man to show her the content in his bag since he seemed to be protective of it.

She found out that he came from a village near the border of Mongolia. Thus he was fluent with both Chinese and Mongolian, aside from the fact that he had a foreign look with tall and sturdy body, more like a fighter than a person who studies day in day out. She asked him about that, and he replied that he used to be a farmer to get enough money to buy books. Now that his distant cousin in the city passed away, some money was sent to him so that he was able to pursue his scholar career. Lin Xiu Lan was fascinated. Despite her rambunctious behavior, she took interest in reading. Soon, she fell to discuss books on various subjects with the new stranger.

At the Chen Mansion, young master Chen Sheng Tian was suffered from mysterious objects that appeared on his bottom where Lin Xiu Lan's foot landed on.

His father analyzed as poison and accordingly ordered his men to search for the girl's party. "Get the antidote from her whichever way you can." His eyes glinted.

Hope there is no mistake in it.

Can someone suggest some name for the scholar? I'm not good with name.
