Discuss. I personally think so, was so enthusiastic, played that character right down to the core.

Yes. From the looks to the facial expressions to the chemistry. Everything was perfect. Nobody beats Jackie Lui as LHC.
SPW '96 remains as my favorite adaptation of the novel, no matter how many remakes they do. The faithfulness to the book, the chemistry of the cast, the hand-to-hand combat, the script is something others can't outdo.

He probably gets it by default because everyone else who was cast in the role did such horrible jobs at it.
He's too stiff to play the care free Linghu Chong. Neither did I buy into his depressive melancholy. Nor does he display the quick wit and intelligence of the character.

I prefer Chow Yun Fat over Jackie Liu
Chow Yun Fat is my all-time favorite actor, but he's *terrible* at doing wuxia drama. He was totally miscast as Ling Wu Chung in SPW '84, and he didn't look interested in the role at all. He seemed to be going through the motions, which wouldn't be too surprising because he was already quite disenchanted with TVB by the mid-1980s and giving more attention to his budding film career.
But even if TVB had cast a more suitable actor (say, Andy Lau or Felix Wong) as Ling Wu Chung in SPW '84, the series *still* wouldn't have worked as it was written and taped. The script was a mess, the costuming was horrid, and TVB just went nucking futs on the SFX (much more so than they had for DGSD '81, LOCH '82, or ROCH '83, in which the SFX were used with more tasteful restraint). Among TVB's 1980s Jin Yong adaptations SPW '84 was one of the weaker entries. It's near the bottom along with B&S: G&R '87 and SSwRB '88.

My favorite is Jacky Liu, second was Richie Jen...
This is off topic and the mods can move if they want:
One of favorite movie review sites ran a Top 100 Films of Hong Kong in the '80s reader poll and Chow Yun Fat fans should be very happy with the results - enjoy!

Jackie Liu isn't particularly handsome so it really does fit the character of LHC as described.
I found that he was certainly amusing in SoD96 so I'm not sure why one would say he didn't nail all the aspects of LHC (just having fun, being heartbroken, fighting for justice).

Jackie has a naturally 'siu sa' air, especially when he smiles. So, he's very suitable as LHC.

I read somewhere that the director chose him as LHC because he had seen Jackie Lui in another role can't remember which though.
