Thread: Am I the only one who prefers the early-mid 90's TVB dramas to the 80's?

    I third this.

I've been watching a lot of '90s wuxia, rewatching some while others are series I've never seen, to see if they were as good as nostalgia led me to believe. Some were awful duds which made me think that it was really nostalgia and Sturgeon's Law in effect. Even so, I found some very pleasant surprises. Either way, I'd take '90s wuxia over whatever stuff TVB is producing nowadays.

The make up of Kiu Fung (Felix Wong) was awful. He looked hairy and kinda dirty and his costumes were pretty bad. I am not complain about his acting as his performance are always great. Same thing about Louis Ku character in "Against the Blade of honour". The costumes and make up from the golden 80s were the best.

Well Xiao Feng is the leader of the Beggars and he is a rough and dirty man. I thought his costumes were fine. But I do agree that the costumes from the 80s were the best. It may not be historically accurate, but it screams out 'wuxia'.

I thought Siu Fung '97 was attired in an oddly foreign way. Strictly speaking, of course, he *was* a foreigner...a Khitan, but he shouldn't have dressed in a foreign manner when he was still known as *Kiu* Fung and believed to be Han by most of those who knew him.

Moreover, his foreign clothing wasn't even right for Khitan people; he dressed more like a Turk.

Default Better plots, not better supporting casts

I understand your preferences. LOCH 94, ROCH 95, DGSD 96, are the early 90s adaptations, they have fast-paced plot compare to the 80s, yet effective, not draggy, and closer to the novel. While the main casts are quite comparable, but supporting characters are far below 80s, , in my humble opinion. It seemed that supporting characters in 80s are stronger and more memorable. Take an example, 5 greats in LOCH/ROCH, and villains in DGSD, 90's can't beat Kenneth Tsang and Shek Sau as Huang Yao Shi and Murong Fu.

yeah i think tvb 90s had the better music during fights or during scenes. one of my favorite tvb 90s serial is romance of white hair maiden with ada choi and timmy ho.

i still don't c the hate with 97 demi god, i actually like the fight scenes, graphics, music that comes out when qiao feng comes out or any of the 3 mains battle. also most of the girls were pretty.

the 80s hold ups a classics, so older audiences will always hold that as the best. so really theres no point in comparing because there different generations, and depending on the audiences or age group when you watch it, either generation or like me, both will be your favorite.

The stipes might make it look turkist, but otherwise his outfit is fairly "han" looking.

Agreed. I absolutely love the background music in DGSD '97. It was all very catchy and the editing was great. Everytime Xiao Feng, Duan Yu, or Xu Zhu appeared, their own song would come on and make everything feel so epic. When there was a sad scene, a sad song would come on and enhance the mood of the scene. The 80s had great background music, but it was very limited. They would play the same song over and over (LOCH '82), but in the 90s, there were many varieties. You could tell by the bgm that a villain was going to appear soon, or a fight is going to break out.
