I've never really considered FSF handsome. To be lenient, I would say he is average to slightly above-average looking. However, he seems like a nice enough guy off screen. The dreadlocks look unflattering on him, though.

LOL, the dreadlocks hairstyle originated from ancient Indian sages though. I am pretty hazy about the King Lan Ling history - was he suppose to be some Western region tribe leader?

I did the reading for ya while I was digging into the history of Female Prime Minister.

I just know the Prince of Lanling's clan, the Gao, has some non-Han Chinese blood in them. I don't exactly remember the name of the ethnic group. In history, the Prince of Lanling (aka as Gong Changgong 高长恭) was actually the nephew of the Chen Xiao's character in Female Prime Minister, Gao Dan （高湛 aka 长广王）. And I heard the "female prime minister" character played by Zhao Liying actually played an important role in plotting his downfall. The man who put Prince of Lanling to death was Gao Dan's son, Gao Wei., who succeeded Gao Dan as emperor of Northern Qi.

A little trivia for Tang Dynasty fans, Li Shimin's wife, Empress Zhangsun, and her famous brother, Zhangsun Wuji, were actually blood-related to this same Gao clan as Prince Lanling. Her mother, Lady Gao, was the descendant of Gao Huan's brother. Gao Huan was Prince Lanling's grandfather.

I found Northern Qi's history to be fascinatingly disturbing. Historians labeled Northern Qi as the "Bestial Dyansty" 禽兽王朝 due to all the sadomasochist rulers and their cruel barbaric behavior. They tend to have a proclivity to rape their brothers' wives . Ironically, the males in the royal Gao clan were also famously known for their good looks as well as their crazy madness. Gao Huan and many of his sons/grandsons including Gao Changgong, Gao Yin (second main guy in Female Minister), and Gao Dan were known to have a beautiful face. I guess Gao clan had good genetics for looks, but some mental disorder also ran in the family.

yeh~the family's famous for its bloodiness and madness. Actually cruel killings happened often during the chaotic time of Northern and Southern Dynasties due to the messy time of the Sinking of the Central Plain. A nomad ethnic died out during the revenge of Han even ate human!= = imagine that...the Caucasian nomad ethnic that survived the most is Tuo Ba Clan of Xian Bei(鲜卑族拓跋部)who found Northern Wei. Northern Wei was the only nomad state that reformed and accepted Han culture, it's quite barbaric like other nomad states until emperor Xiao Wen孝文帝(Tuo-Ba Hong拓跋宏) forced all the people in the country to use Han names, speak Han language, wear Han clothes and live like a Han. Of course his reform attracted many useful Hans to his state and Northern Wei quick became the most powerful nomad state. Northern Wei later broke into two states: Eastern Wei and Western Wei, Eastern Wei was later overturned by Gao family and turn into Northern Qi which Lord Lan Ling served. Western Wei ruled by Yu Wen family（宇文） was the one that had great impact on Sui&Tang Dynasty later on.(It basically formed the background story of Xuan Yuan Sword轩辕剑)

I guess Gao clan had good genetics for looks, but some mental disorder also ran in the family.
