    Default Peach Blossom Formations

Does anyone have a clear idea of how this is supposed to look like?

HR used it to fend off the Golden Wheel monk. It involved hiding behind rocks, and moving the rocks around to change the formation.
If the Wu brothers could move the rocks to hide from the monk, couldn't he remove the rocks from the formation?

Chen Ying used a dirt formation to slow down LMC. She ended up going around it because the formation only covered the front of the house. Given, that's the easiest way to get around it, but can't she just knock down whatever's in her path if she should choose to take on the formation?

On Peach Blossom Island. It's famous for trapping ZBT for over a decade, and people can't just come and go. But is is really that difficult? Can't you just climb on the trees and go in a straight line to wherever you want to go?

And again, OYF burnt down the Lu manor, no one else seemed to have decided to just destroy it, but instead decide to run through it and get lost.

I've always imagined that if you're trapped inside the Peach Blossom Formation, you experience a degree of nausea and vertigo that makes it difficult to even remain standing, let alone escape.

based on the adaptations I've seen so far, the trees(Tao Hua Island) and the rocks (Huang Rong's) seems to be moving around. In the island, it seems like when you thought you found your way out, the trees move to block your way. And for the rocks, when you thought you can just destroy it, it moves and avoids the attack.

Also, the trees' roots seems to have a life of their own and grabs you if you touch the trees.

As for OYF, he was starting to go crazy at that time, if I remember correctly.

i always had that same question. so the formation itself is like alive, able to dodge, move, and attack on its own or however the formation is set up?

in condor heroes 95, golden wheel monk was blasting the rock formation til he found yang guo n huang rong. its funny that others don't just spam there chi blast etc and destroy the formation instead of just walking into it.

Adaptations make the formation move, but based on what I've been told about the novels, the formation itself patently does *not* move (except manually, as Wong Yung and the Mo Brothers did in ROCH). It basically functions as an extreme optical illusion.

    Ken's explanation seems most logical.

If it's merely an *optical* illusion, however, then it follows that blind people are immune to it. There are quite a few blind people in wulin...

There's still the issue of just jumping on top and flying over it.

Very interesting point. It just doesn't quite make sense that all these great martial artists can't even land a blow on a ROCK!

All the adaptations show these objects moving around constantly, so I still can't really grasp at this concept.

Well, the rocks are there to protect the user. If you attack the rock, and the rock moves, then you hit person hiding behind it.

I'm thinking that there'll be traps in the formation as well. Things like pitfalls or log drop traps (with boulders).

Still, it's one of the more "magical" tropes in wuxia.

maybe there's some hard-to-detect hallucination substance in the formation and when a person steps in, it gets on the person and makes his mind go nuts.

apparantly the maze is based upon the Stone Sentinel Maze: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eight_Trigrams_Formation

It seems that when you're IN the maze, the maze confuses you. Probably like a labyrinth would, where you turn so many times you dont know where you came from anymore as you can't see the target
(I'd think that if they'd jump op on one of those rocks, they could just follow the maze along. )
