I watched Sad Fairytale online a few nights ago. Personally, I thought it was quite bland the whole way through, with some comedic scenes here and there.
As for the acting, LSS did a good job in portraying Yang Jia, and Hu Xia did quite well for his first time officially acting.

**Interesting tidbit: Nicky Wu is Yang Jia's 'idol' in Sad Fairytale. There's posters of him in her room.

Off topic, I'm waiting for DIVA (HG's new movie) to appear on the web. DIVA didn't do too well in the Mainland box office either.

^Hu Xia is a famous singer, and I don't think he's that bad-looking. The casting and popularity of actors isn't all about looks. Tons of actors are ridiculously good-looking but never seem to get lead roles. A lot of it is the charisma, the likeability, the shuai qi (I think shuai qi is a little different from purely good looks), etc. I think the Chinese audience is a bit less shallow than Western audiences. For example, Qing Dynasty dramas are popular.
