After experiencing many difficulties and dangers, Chong and Ying's love finally reaches its right conclusion. Many people after reading the old edition's (presumably this refers to the 2nd ed.)
postscript, which said that "Yingying is perfectly content, but LHC's freedom is constrained. Perhaps only Yilin's unilateral love allows him the least constraint on his nature", thought that Chong and Ying's marriage is a passive, forced affair, even to the extent that LHC had to sacrifice the rest of his life's happiness and freedom. With regard to this conjecture, the third edition's ending beyond doubt explained very well that "he achieved the hope of a lifetime and was filled with boundless joy." This is precisely how RYY and LHC feel after they are married.
