Default Recovery of fighting abilities after injury in wuxia - instant and complete?

In the real world, after an athlete is injured, even after his or her wound has healed, he or she still needs a considerable amount of time to rehabilitate his/her skills to the level he/she had prior to the injury. Sometimes, even if the injury fully heals, the skills never quite return to the pre-injury levels.

One of the strange things about wuxia is that after a character recovers from an injury, his/her skills return to full power almost IMMEDIATELY after the injury heals...with no need for reconditioning or rehabilitation. Consider Gwok Jing in LOCH after he was wounded by West Poison Au Yeung Fung's Ha Mo Gung and Yeung Hong's dagger. Although the healing process itself required a number of days, as soon as Gwok Jing was healed, he was ready to fight at 100% capacity (perhaps at an even higher level than before the injury due to inner power gains from circulating 9 Yum Jen Ging energy for days on end). Just one hour before Gwok Jing emerged with Wong Yung from the secret room at Kuk Ling Fung's inn in Ox Village, Gwok Jing was helpless and could have been easily killed by anybody. As soon he emerged from the secret room, however, Gwok Jing was fit to kick the butt of anybody other than a Great or Kau Cheen Yan.

Gwok Jing's is not a unique case. In many cases, a wuxia character who has been injured is ready to fight at full capacity immediately after the wound heals; there seems to be no additional rehabilitation needed to get the fighting abilities back into shape.

    Done for plot purposes obviously.

If the heroes needed too much time to get back to fitness, it would severely limit the author's freedom to have injury related plots woven into the timeline.

plus the idea is, the 9yin manual healing technique is wonderful and you regain all your energy back as you recover. or the hero is in such good shape that he did not lose any energy from the injury. just some accupoints or such were damaged and he needs to clear them for his chi to work properlly.

A lot of times, say internal injuries, I get the feeling that its just the flow of chi being disrupted or blocked, once thats cleared up, power should be restored almost immediately.

This trope was somewhat subverted in LOCH for Wong Yung's injury. Although she was healed by South Emperor 1 Deng's 1 Yeung Finger Technique, she was not able to fight at full capacity for some time after that (e.g. not until after the revelation of the murder of the Gong Nam 5 Freaks). Similarly, after giving birth to twins in ROCH, Wong Yung seemingly wasn't back to full strength until after Little Dragon Girl started her sixteen year sabbatical.

Huang Rong fought with Ying Gu almost immediately after being healed by Yideng. A couple of weeks later, she and Guo Jing fought Qiu Qianren to a draw on a boat.

You're right, but I don't think she fought as well as she could have in either battle. Perhaps the novel portrayed it differently, but LOCH '82 made a point of depicting Wong Yung not being at full strength in those fights. She fought very poorly against Ying Goo...much worse than Wong Yung should have given her (Wong's) skill level at the time. Similarly, although she was able to help Gwok Jing against Kau Cheen Yan, she was exhausted afterwards in a way that she wouldn't be if she had been at full strength.

It's not like TVB to be that careful with such details in their additions, so I tend to think this is probably something Jin Yong noted first and TVB simply used.

Don't remember the exact descriptions in the book, but I think GJ + HR actually had a slight advantage over QQR during that fight.

Another moment where QQR looks like garbage compared to the other Greats.
