Default New Wuxia Fiction Forum Group Project: A Comprehensive CONDOR HEROES TRILOGY Timeline

Once upon a long, long time ago, I wrote a brief, sketchy timeline of the CONDOR HEROES TRILOGY, which someone bothered to preserve here.

I've been working on a much more developed, greatly expanded version of that timeline, but I need help from my fellow Wuxia Forum members. Not all of the dates are accurate/correct, and some are nebulous and poorly defined. I'd like to invite all of you to chip in on improving this timeline, adding/correcting what you feel is necessary for greater accuracy.

The timeline begins during the Golden Age of the Tang Dynasty, when the Manichaeism religion first arrived in China from Persia, and ends with the establishment of the Ming Dynasty in 1368, which essentially closed the books on the CONDOR HEROES TRILOGY era. Essentially, the timeline covers the centuries during which the Chinese Ming Cult existed and the Central Plains of China faced invasion and occupation by successive waves of steppe nomad warrior regimes.

Borrowing a convention from the compilers of STAR WARS timelines, I used the first meeting of Yau Chui Gei with Yeung Teet Sum and Gwok Siu Teen at Ox Village in Lin-an (e.g. the beginning of LOCH proper) as the central pin for the timeline (just as the STAR WARS compilers use the Battle of Yavin/Destruction of First Death Star as the pin for the STAR WARS timeline). Everything before the first encounter at Ox Village is designated as YBOV (Years Before Ox Village) and everything that occurs afterwards is designated as YAOV (Years After Ox Village).

So check it out and make additions/modifications/comments as you please:

    500 YBOV

    - The ancient Persian religion Manichaeism arrives in China during the height of the Tang Dynasty's power and glory. Newly converted Chinese followers of Manichaeism establish the Chinese Ming Cult.

    - Gung Sheun Tze’s ancestors settle at Passionless Valley.

    300 YBOV

    - Tang Dynasty falls. Central Plains of China fragment into decades of chaos during Five Kingdoms and Ten Dynasties period. Khitan Liao Empire founded by Yeh Lut Abaoji (907), taking sixteen prefectures in northwestern China.

    240 YBOV

    - Northern Sung Dynasty founded by Chiu Kwong Yin (960), reunifying the Central Plains. The Khitan Liao Empire looms as a constant threat in the northwest.

    200 - 100 YBOV

    - Yeung Family Corps (ostensibly distant ancestors of Yeung Gor) legends. The Yeungs, fighting on behalf of the Northern Sung Dynasty, are deeply involved in the periodic wars against the Khitan Liao Empire and Tangut Hsi-Hsia Kingdom through the generations of Yeung Yip, Yeung 6 Long, Yeung Chung Bo, and Yeung Mun Gwong over the course of the 11th Century.

    100 YBOV

    - Events of DEMIGODS & SEMIDEVILS; protagonist Deun Yu (a prince and later king of the Dali Kingdom) is grandfather of future South Emperor Deun Chi Hing; protagonists Siu Fung (a Khitan warlord formerly renowned in wulin as Beggar's Union Chief Kiu Fung) and Hui Juk (former Shaolin junior monk turned Siu Yiu Sect Leader and prince consort of Tangut Hsi-Hsia Kingdom) refine the Beggar's Union's Hong Lung 28 Palms into the more efficient Hong Lung 18 Palms. Siu Fung befriends Yeun Nan Akuta, the future founder of the Jurchen Jin Empire. Periodic military conflicts among Northern Sung Dynasty, Khitan Liao Empire, and Tangut Hsi-Hsia Kingdom continue, including an aborted Liao invasion of Sung thwarted by the heroic self-sacrifice of Siu Fung.

The timeline inconsistency with Qu Lingfeng was corrected in the 3rd edition, which has Qu Lingfeng kicked out of Peach Blossom Island much earlier than the others, before Chen and Mei stole the 9 Yin manual. I can't remember the details - something about him and his teacher and Mei Chaofeng. Either he criticised his teacher for liking MCF, or he himself liked her or something - someone else will be able to give details.

His crippling and ejection would have to be moved to YBOV, eliminating the inconsistency about Huang Rong's age.

Thanks, Ian. That clears up that detail.

What a thrill to read! One question, can Smiling Proud Wanderer continue this timeline in some way?

It might be part of an all-inclusive Jin Yong timeline, though SPW runs ahead of the domino reaction of events that was the CONDOR HEROES TRILOGY.

Specifically, Qu Lingfeng was kicked out of Peach Blossom Island AFTER he kicked Chen Xuanfeng's *** for getting it on with Mei Chaofeng, as he knew that Huang Yaoshi himself was in love with Mei Chaofeng, who had previously vowed to always be by Huang Yaoshi's side. When Huang Yaoshi heard about this, he was highly embarassed and furious, which is why he expelled Qu Lingfeng.

Years later, after marrying Huang Rong's mother, Huang Yaoshi got drunk and mumbled something along the lines of, "Who can claim that Huang Yaoshi is in love with his own student? What nonsense! Where is Lingfeng? I forgive him, call him back!"

When Mei and Chen heard this, they were afraid that once Qu Lingfeng came back, he would take vengeance on them for getting his legs broken and getting expelled, plus they were still worried over Huang Yaoshi continuing to have feelings for Mei Chaofeng, which is why they eloped, stealing the 9YZJ so they would be 'strong enough to fight off pursuers'. Huang Yaoshi, upon discovering their betrayal, rescinded his order to bring back Qu Lingfeng and instead expelled everyone else as well.

Shouldn't XZ's case be in 152? I may be wrong as I am having a big headache now.

At least a year passes between the point that Siu Chiu leaves China (and the story) and the end of HSDS, because after her departure, Cheung Mo Gei, Chow Chi Yerk, and Tse Tsun spend almost a full year marooned on that island where Chow Chi Yerk murdered Yan Lei, and several more months pass after their return to the Central Plains.

Shouldn't the Greats emerge before WCY uses 9YZJ to counter LCY? Also, no reference for 1st Hua Shan tournament?

It's hard to say. Some of the events from the YBOV could possibly be switched around.

First Mt. Hua Sword Tournament is covered between death of Chief Seung Gwoon of the Iron Palm Union and the drinking contest Wong Chung Yeung had with the monk who would create the 9 Yeung Jen Ging.

I was under the impression that Wang Chongyang received 9 Yin after the Huashan tournament, and whoever possessed it before is just some unexplained thing like how Feng Qingyang learned Dugu 9 Swords.

I mean it doesn't make too much sense otherwise. If he had it in secret, he could just secretly bury it like he intended to in the future. If everyone knew he had it, being the world's best doesn't really stop people from scheming or allying up to get it. If Huashan didn't exist and Ouyang Feng tries to steal it from him, he would be defeated and deterred as he would have been in Huashan. He'd have to prove his superiority at least once either way.

Perhaps it was some non-wulin fella who stumbled upon the 9 Yin and offered it as a prize since he had no interest in it. Doesn't make sense for any wulin member to offer it up as a prize. The whole thing is kind of silly anyway -- let's give the richest guy on the planet even more money!

As I recall it, the reason that Central Divinity Wong Chung Yeung convened the Mt. Hua Sword Tournament in the first place was to determine what should be done about the 9 Yum Jen Ging. He already had possession of it, but he knew that it didn't really *belong* to him. He wanted to settle the matter of its ownership in a way that would be in accordance with wulin rules.

Don't think much detail of the Huashan tournament (why it happened, what exactly happened, etc) is actually given in the book. It's just a legendary event that happened, and directly affected our main characters.

Interesting idea Ken. But I have an objection. Using specific timeline does not jell well with me. I'd rather use the Georgian Calender since we are more costumed to it and we don't have to do double calculation. It seems every time we try to do some adjustments, we have to do additional calculation. Using Georgian Calender seems less hassle and easy. Just my 2 cents.

Using the Georgian calendar would be difficult for this because Jin Yong fudged the dates for historical events. The CONDOR HEROES TRILOGY was built around real events in Chinese history between the 12th Century and the 14th Century, but while Jin Yong followed the general flow of history, he *seriously* fudged many of the dates. Therefore, it seemed better to work with the sagas' internal timelines rather than a real world calendar.
