I have watched enough DGSD TV series from Ken Tong as Murong Fu (possibly the most handsome MRF) to 2003 China production (possibly the tallest XF). I am unlikely to watch another DGSD series. Unless it is based on JY's latest edition.

Kent Tong was Duan Yu - Shek Sau was Murong Fu, and he was absolutely stunning in the role!

This is 3rd edition, as far as I know - that Kibum fella isn't going to end up with Wang Yuyan.

Sorry for my mistake. Oh really, then I will give this series a shot. It may not be so bad. For one I find it quite refreshing to use the same character for Ah Zhu/Ah Zhi.

2003 version was pretty good, even if Murong Fu was quite badly cast (Adn this one doesn't look any better). The thing which really crippled 2003 for me was the sloppy editing - there were so many errors and inconsistencies across scenes which broke immersion. When you do multiple takes of a scene and choose the nicest ones to stitch together, you have to make sure that they flow. Otherwise I really really enjoyed it, and it's nothing to do with shallow things like pretty clothing and pretty actors. Hu Jun, Gao Hu and even Jimmy (to a certain extent) did their roles justice. Liu Tao and Chen Hao were also brilliant, while Liu Yifei was fortunate to have quite an expressionless character to portray for her debut, so her weaknesses were exposed as badly as they might have been.

Exactly took the words out of my mouth! I too like the 97 version best, but 03 was not that bad in comparison.

I also think Yaun Hong would be a great MRF.

Li Jie would definitely be good, and I would also be really interested to see Yuan Hong!

But yeah, the point is, I need to understand why WYY would be so hopelessly in love with him. So they really need to cast someone that's extremely handsome with intense charisma. Not someone that at first glance looks like a bad guy...

Honestly, I've only ever liked YH with respect to LSS. I don't find he has any 'gu wei' (ancient air/flavour) when he does period dramas. There's also something about his acting - that I can't put my figurative finger on - that I find not very engaging.

Actually, I think my #1 candidate for MRF in the current age would be Yan Kuan. That lovely piece of eye-candy has it all: looks, acting skill, charisma, 'gu wei', youth for MRF's role.

If age didn't matter, Shao Feng would totally own the role. He was so evil and suave in Celestial Sword and Heroes. Why I think he would actually be better than Yan Kuan, is that I could see WYY falling for him, despite his bad boy behaviour.

Agree. Short of XAJH, I've had issues with any other post-production editing of ZJZ films. No focused attention to sequence and flow. Sloppy work at best. ROCH editing made me want to cry.

I didn't like how Jimmy portrayed his character. I'll give him a benefit of the doubt, as I've seen him in engaging and meaningful performances, and the director could've been a OCD ogre. His DY was so static and 1D. The only good act was when he went wild with grief after his parents' death and proceeded to blast a million holes in WYY's would be captor. That was interestingly abrupt and dark in an otherwise spacy portrayal of DY.

In contrast, Benny gave DY substance. He portrayed DY's ideals with a vitality that I found really engaging. I thought one of the best moments was the fight at Shaolin Temple, when DY fought MRF in defense of his father. Benny showed a righteous outrage that spoke elegantly of his love for his family, rather than an action out of obligation. Even when he defeated MRF and held back due to WYY, on the heels of his defense for his father, it made DY noble for his mercy rather than weak for his deference to this woman (who obviously didn't deserve him).

It's great to hear DY won't end up with WYY. I never really thought DY loved her in the first place. The consistently superficial reasons he had for his affection were so sad. I get he was infatuated with idea of her, but not really the real WYY. In the 80's version, WYY even had the gall to manipulate his affection to steal Liu Mai Shen Jian. Admittedly, she did have a fleeting moment of guilt. Irony being, is that she would be betraying her own family too, as she was also a Duan lady.

better than this guys. :/

So how are they doing with the show? Promoting much? ^_^

I absolutely love '97 version. I thought Benny and Felix was perfect for their roles. They brought so much more substance to their characters than any other versions. QF's tragic ending was so sad but so touching. Felix was definitely the main hero for me, but I love Benny as well. As for the female characters, I wasn't too keen on any of them. The only one that was really worth watching was Ah Zhu, but she died too early on in the drama. Did not like the other 2 at all.

My first impression of Zhao Yuan Yuan as Mu Wanqing - looks good. Any "marriage" pictures of her with DY?

MWQ has always been my favourite character in DGSD. I loved Jiang Qin's portrayal of her but I can see Zhao Yuan Yuan's potential too. She looks beautiful so far, but I can't seem to find other pictures of her?

I've never paid much attention to MWQ. She seemed like she lacked either sense or self-esteem with her rule of marrying the first man to see her face. At least she wasn't as 1D as WYY.

Zhao Yuan Yuan looks very beautiful. Actually, stunning in those red robes. I think, for the first time, I'm going to look forward to watching this portrayal of MWQ. Yes I know, very superficial .
