    Default Demi-gods and Semi-devils Chapter 01

    I know it's been done before but I decide to tackle this out of my interest in writing wuxia. I figured that translating a novel that I like would inspire my own writing as well as getting to grips with wuxia-specific terms.

    Well, I don't think many people will read this but I'll be very grateful to those who do take the time to do so. Feedback is much appreciated so I can improve as a writer, translator and wuxia student. I'm posting the link to my blog because I set it up with floating explanations when you mouse over the footnotes.

    Default Demi-gods and Semi-devils

    Hi,
    Appreciate your efforts, looking forward to reading your translation
    Would like to note that DGSD has not actually been completed yet, they are up to chapter 34 I believe.
    It might be worth coordinating with the existing translators (e.g.; http://www.spcnet.tv/forums/member.php/94184-d4rksinz) re a joint effort by splitting up the remainder
    Of course, I'm being selfish, I just want to get a final version in English.
    It may be that you just want to translate the entire book by yourself as an academic exercise , of course.
    Best,
    Jack

    Hi Jack, thanks! I considered picking up the chapters that aren't completed. But I worry about the consistency of the tone and the terms used. For example, I prefer to use the terms shixiong/shijie and shidi/shimei instead of senior and junior. Senior is a tad ambiguous. Likewise, use of terms like xiake rather than knight-errant. I've always felt that such terms bring a stronger cultural flavour. Consider terms like samurai and ninja. Those are so often used that they have become mainstream. Translators could have used the terms like knights or assassins but they don't. Anyway, I digress.

    I'll check with the translators to see how I can help. It is an academic exercise but it's more worth the time if it benefits the community at the same time.

    Yep, I understand your concerns re style etc... I seem to remember someone once joining a translation thread, but had changed all the names in their contribution... when asked about how it didn't tie in, they just responded "Oh, I liked these versions of the names better."... which obviously made following what was going on in the story difficult.
    Hopefully you can work something out, or alternatively continue with your own complete version

    Yes, it's a concern since I've noticed Cantonese versions of the names are often used on these forums. I speak only Mandarin so I naturally use hanyu pinyin instead of a Cantonese romanisation system.

    Feedback on the first chapter is much appreciated so I can improve on future translations. =)

    I will read it. I think it's fine that you are doing this again. What edition is your book?
    If you can keep your head when all about you
    Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
    If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
    But make allowance for their doubting too;

    It is a great translation!
    My only suggestion is to have a "Next Page", and maybe "First", "Last" on your webpage.

    Thank you! I'm not sure which version I used for the first chapter so I'll need to review it. But the subsequent translations will be using the latest version.

    Thank you! Yes, I plan to change it so that. I realised it's a bit hard to use the current navigation. Thanks for the feedback. =)
