“Eva?” comes the voice on the mobile phone.

“Yes… Frankie! Are we meeting at noon like we arranged?”

“…”

“Frankie – are you there?” Eva is a little puzzled by the silence.

“Yes, but can you come to the airport? I have to meet someone there.” Frankie sounds hesitant.
“I’ll meet you there, departure lounge… I have to go…”

The call is ended before Eva can say goodbye and she is bewildered by the change of meeting place.

Three hours later and Eva steps out of the Airport MTR link and into the concourse once again. She feels nervous as she takes the glass lift up to the departure area with the feeling that something untoward will be happening.

“Flight Departures.” Announces the sophisticated talking lift as the doors open and some people pushing trolleys hustle through.

Eva steps out and looks around for her fiancé. She spots him, but notices he is stood alone.
“Maybe his friend hasn’t arrived yet,” she thinks to herself as she wanders towards him, unaware that she is closely being followed by someone. As she draws closer, she sees that he is clasping his passport and carrying a bag which resembles the hand luggage he had when she returned to Hong Kong with him.

“Now I know I have made the right decision!” laughs Frankie, who seems in a particularly jovial mood.
“The two of you even arrive at the same time.”

Rather distressed by what she is seeing and hearing, Eva looks at where Frankie is staring and turns to see that Louis is just behind her. The shock turns to irritation as she turns back to Frankie and asks him sternly.
“What is going on? Is this some kind of a joke?”

Frankie continues to be in a jolly and relaxed mood.
“Eva. I want to tell you that I am pulling out. The two of you should be together. That’s why I called Louis here as well.”
He grabs Eva’s hand and places it into Louis’ before turning to Louis:
“This is where it belongs. I wish you much happiness together.”

Louis is just as stunned as Eva as he stutters:
“Frankie… why are you doing this?”

Frankie cannot keep up his act any longer and with a juddering lip, he turns to Louis and Eva:
“I just want you both to be happy. Eva, thank you for giving me the happiest time of my life. Louis, please look after her…”
He squeezes their hands together before dropping them and turning to walk to the restricted area, where they cannot follow.

Without a second thought, Eva flings away Louis’ hand with such force that her engagement ring flies away and with a loud ping rolls down the concourse floor. She runs after Frankie and grabs him, making him stop. His tears have flooded his face. Louis catches up and the three of them stand in the centre of the concourse like a showdown at noon.

Eva cannot stand the pain any longer and decides it is time to put an end to it all.
“You are both so selfish.” She announces, before turning to Frankie.
“Do you think I am just an object that can be pushed around at will? Have you asked me whether I want to be with him? Do you think that I have no feelings at all towards you and that I won’t be hurt just as much knowing I am building my happiness on your pain?”
Frankie is silent.
Eva turns to Louis.
“And you! Why do you think I should subject myself to the risk of having the same, insecure, wishy-washy relationship with you? You have shattered my dream once already, Do you think I should build it up again to have it toppled?”

A little boy runs up to Eva clasping her engagement ring.
“Jer jer! This fell off your hand before. My daddy says I should give it back to you.” He says earnestly.

“Thank you di di.” She says to him as he smiles and runs off back to his parents.

Eva laughs ironically at the ring in her hand and then turns to the two men who are standing before her with guilty looks on their faces like schoolboys being scolded. She turns to Frankie.
“I have been unfair to you. I am sorry, I should never have accepted this from you.” She says as she presses the ring back into his palm.
Then she pulls out her notebook from her bag and holds it out to Louis.
“I want you to have this. Being without it will help me to let go of you and this memory. If you want to forget me as well, then please destroy it for me.”

Frankie and Louis both turn to her with enquiring eyes as they prepare themselves mentally for what she has to say.
“I think it is time for us all to wake up and face a new day with new beginnings, you both deserve better than me.”

Eva walks away and towards the lifts. Neither Louis nor Frankie follow as they stand and begin to contemplate life without her. They recognise her message and through their love for her, have chosen to respect it. In life, it is often fairest to be unfair to everyone. Fate can be so cruel.

Sorry to disappoint those of you who wanted a fight, but Frankie is a bit of a wuss... (he is a schoolteacher in England after all).

The story draws to a close now, only two short chapters left... endings are so hard to write, but I think it is time to wrap everything up.

Enjoy!

Chapter 14 – Email exchanges

Date: December 20th
Mail to: Vanessa Tsui
From: Eva Cheung
Subject: Merry Christmas

Hi Vanessa,

I’m so sorry I haven’t been in touch for so long. I can’t believe it is Christmas again already. I’ll be spending it in Canada again this year, as this is our busiest season in the PR business. This will be my third one here and I will be heading up to my colleague’s cabin in the mountains and enjoying another truly white Christmas. Certainly makes a difference compared to the drab, rainy ones we used to share in the UK!

Thanks for sending me the pictures of your lovely family. Amy is growing up so quickly and she is so pretty, just like her mother! Michael looks so proud… especially in the photograph of him with baby Frankie. I can’t believe you named your son after his uncle, I can imagine how flattered your big brother must be! Talking of him, how is he doing? I hope he is well…

Gigi dropped in on me a few weeks ago on her way to Alaska. She seems to have found her niche in doing travel writing – at least she doesn’t need to do any more stalking apart from when she is on safari and stalking wild animals! Every so often, she will send me photographs of her either hanging from a bungee rope or riding an elephant or standing beside some of the greatest sights in the world. Uncle Wo suggested giving her a TV crew to follow her around, but I’m not sure whether she’d like that. She loves her freedom far too much.

Anyway, I hope you have a lovely Christmas and I will write again soon!
Love
Eva

From: Vanessa and Amy
Subject: Happy Valentines’ Day

Dear Auntie Eva,

Happy Valentines Day!

Lots of love and kisses from Amy, Baby Frankie, Vanessa and Michael

--------

Hi Eva,

Amy insisted that I send you a Valentines Day wish, because even she knows that you don’t have a boyfriend to send you one. Don’t work too hard and try to get yourself someone and get married before I look too old and dishevelled to wear a dress in public!

Things have been quite hectic because we have been moving house and it is so difficult with these two little devils beneath my feet all the time. We’ve bought a storey of one of those villas in Sai Kung so that we have our own rooftop garden for the kids and it is easier for Michael to go to work in the new TV studios. Don’t worry, we’ve saved you a room for when you come back to visit us. And hey! You’d never guess who has moved into the level below us… Eddie and Sylvia! Looks like they are preparing to take the big leap soon as well. You will have no excuse not to come over now!

You asked about Frankie in your last mail. He is keeping well back home in England, still teaching but moving up the ranks and still with his head buried in his books. Mum’s really worried about his social life, which is non-existent at the moment - you know how parents are. Hope you don’t mind me being blunt, but I hope he isn’t holding out for you… (I only say that because I know he doesn’t have a chance, you are just too different.)

Keep me posted on your progress and come back and see us soon!

Love,
Vanessa

Why do we have so many celebrations in a year, coming up to Easter again and that means more events. Our company has just signed with a major client who wants us to arrange some promotional events for their real estate company. This is my first major project of my own so I am really going for it. You know what that means – not even enough time for eating and sleeping, never mind thinking about other things like Valentines or weddings…

Wouldn’t miss Eddie’s wedding for all the gold in the world though. Remind him where to send the invite and I will be back on that plane straight away!

Take care,
Eva

Sorry to bother you Eva,

I know you’re probably not the right person to ask, but I am trying everyone at the moment – has Louis contacted you recently? I haven’t heard from him for a long time since he headed into China to do some filming and I was wondering whether he has been in touch…

Don’t panic, I’m sure he can look after himself and he is probably just busy. Julia was asking about him the other day and I didn’t know what to say. She doesn’t think about him much now though, thank goodness.

Let me know!
Thanks

Hi Michael,

Sorry I can’t help you, I haven’t heard from Louis since I left Hong Kong three years ago. I hope he is okay, not even seen him in the news recently…

Chat later, I have to go and see my client.

Chapter 15 – New Day, New Dream

Eva packs up her laptop and stuffs it into her briefcase before picking up her mobile phone and dialling her colleague.
“Are you ready yet David? We’re going to be late!”

“Yeah, sure! I’ll see you in the lobby.”

David and Eva hurry through the busy hotel reception during the check out rush and hail a taxi from the front of the building. They quickly climb into the cab and it drives off past the towering office blocks and the mixture of old and new buildings that make up the varied skyline of downtown Toronto. With the breathtaking CN tower looking over them, the cab pulls up at the front of the impressive offices of CWC Estates.

After booking in with reception, the two are led through the marbled corridors into a smart conference room where they await their client to present their upcoming promotional event to sell some newly built houses in an Ontario suburb. Eva sits and feels a little nervous as she looks around the elaborately decorated room, with examples of contemporary art on the wall.

“Would you like a drink Miss Cheung?” asks the helpful receptionist.

“A cup of tea would be nice!” replies Eva. She needs it to help calm her nerves. Despite having worked in the media and undergone many a presentation in the past few years, she is still just as jittery each time.

“Hey! Calm down Eva… your shaking is contagious.” Laughs David, trying to put her at ease. He is a half-Chinese half-Canadian man who is tall, dark and handsome with the sensibility of the Chinese mixed with the wit and humour of his Western blood. He sets about plugging his laptop into the projector controls on the tabletop and Eva runs through the key points once more in her mind.

“All done and ready to go!” says David merrily as he switches off the projector screen in preparation.

“Ah! You are a little early!”
One of the CWC representatives walks into the boardroom and greets Eva and David.
“So pleased to meet you in person, my name is Edwin Hung and I am from the Sales and Marketing team.”
He holds out his hand to David and Eva in turn.

“David Leung – project manager.” Says David as he shakes Edwin’s hand.

“Eva Cheung, I am the project co-ordinator.” Explains Eva.
“It is an honour to work with such a prestigious company.”

“Well, your company is renowned for having the closest ties with the Asian communities in Canada, especially with the media so you seemed like the best choice for this particular project.” Justifies Edwin.
“I’m afraid our Marketing Manager Mr Shum is currently out of the country, so he has sent his right hand man down to meet you today. He should be here any minute now, I saw him rushing around earlier on.”

Eva nods in acknowledgement and just at this time the door to the boardroom opens and a cool and confident character in a smart suit saunters in and gently rests his briefcase on the table. He looks across the table at his visitors and his calm is broken momentarily.

“Ah! Here you are Louis. This is Miss Cheung and Mr Leung from Asiatic Promotions. Eva, David – please meet Louis Chiu our Deputy Marketing Manager and also our Managing Director’s youngest son.”

Eva’s nerves suddenly got a thousand times worse.

Through the meeting, Eva’s professionalism prevents her from thinking too much about the presence of Louis in the room as she sells her project from the planning stages to the end product in her very detailed and well thought out presentation. David notices her strain and does his best to help her whenever he can as they work together in what appears to be a perfect partnership.

After the presentation, Edwin and Louis both applaud their efforts.
“Thank you to you both. I will be reporting back to the management team with your plans and I look forward to working with you very soon.” Says Edwin as he shakes their hands once again and quickly speeds off to his next engagement.

Louis seems to be more leisurely and he walks over to them, helping to unplug a power unit from the wall and handing it to David. He then looks over at Eva and smiles affectionately.

Calmed by the sense of relief that the meeting is over, Eva feels relaxed as she faces Louis for the first time in three years, after she left him and Frankie in the airport.
“You look so different, Mr Chiu!” she exclaims defiantly.

“I had to blink to make sure of who I was seeing too…” laughs Louis.

David looks over at them with a puzzled look on his face. Eva raises an eyebrow at him and explains.
“Louis and I are… old friends?”

“Yes, I guess that was all we became…” Louis adds.

“I see…” says David coyly. “Well, that should help in our future co-operation then.”

Louis suddenly pauses for a moment and studies the eye-gestures being passed between Eva and David. Then he takes a deep breath and asks Eva:
“I was wondering if I could take you out for dinner tonight, just to catch up?”
He glances over at David and hurriedly adds:
“That is if you don’t mind, David?”

David smiles after once again glancing over at Eva.
“No, not at all… I need to head back over to Vancouver this evening anyway. I’ll catch up with you guys later.”

Well, here it is....

-------------------------------------------
After their ups and downs, their new experiences, hard work and a concerted effort to put the past behind them, Eva and Louis find themselves back in the predicament that is sharing a meal together once more. In the homely environment of a traditional Canadian bistro, they sit opposite each other in a carriage seat opposite a mock log fire and with the dim comforting orange lighting and a small candle nightlight completes the mood on the tabletop. Maybe they have matured, or maybe the circumstances are different now. Neither is out to impress the other, they are no longer wary of being spotted and probably most importantly, priorities have changed for them both. The past three years have yielded much for these two young people and they meet today at ease with each other’s company.

Yet still, the reunion with Eva has not failed to rekindle a little longing within Louis’ heart. A broken hope has shown new signs of life for try as he might, he cannot let go of his feelings towards her and what he has seen of the reinvented Eva, it does nothing other than to draw his attraction towards her even more.

As they complete the formalities and dig into their starters, curiosity fills the air and the two share their resumes of the time since they parted, talking luminously about what they have been doing and how they came to meet again in Toronto.

“I’m pleased to see that you have been reunited with your family and taken back your original name.” Enthuses Eva.
“I always preferred your given name to your Artiste name…”

“Why? What is wrong with it?” protests Louis.

“Well, it just sounds so pretentious!” laughs Eva.
“So what made you change your mind about the business world then?”

Louis thinks and a more serious expression appears on his face.
“My visit to England and seeing your family there prompted some feelings in me, then seeing how happy Michael and Vanessa were with their little ones really knocked me back to reality.”

“Oh?” Eva looks and listens intently.

“Seeing them as a family unit, I really thought to myself how lonely I was in the world. There are orphans out there who would do anything to have a family of their own and yet down to my own arrogance and selfishness, I gave up my own parents and my brothers to pursue something which will not last forever.”

Eva cannot believe that she is hearing this from Louis. She feels a little lump in her throat as he pours out his reasoning from the depths of his heart.

“When the colourful life has ended and the fame and stardom has faded, I will be alone with no-one to go home to. I realised my loneliness was my own doing, so I vowed to put this right and make it up to my mother and father. The heavens bestowed me with a complete and loving family, I would be a fool to forsake them.”

“Wow, you really have changed your outlook on life… how did your folks react?”

“It didn’t take much looking to find my family and I really thought that they wouldn’t want me back after everything I had done, but my father proved to me that blood is thicker than water and put everything behind him. I didn’t have any skills to offer his company, but he laughed that I have the gift of the gab and plenty of charm, so he’s given me an opportunity in Sales. He made me realise the true value of love, family or otherwise.”
Louis offers a look of pure thankfulness as he talks about his parents, he has really committed himself to a more fulfilling life.

Eva is very touched after hearing Louis’ words and she suddenly finds him exuding the one quality, which he lacked before. The one thing that women seek in a man, after they have moved on from the crush phase of their emotional development – a sense of security. A man whom they can depend on and trust entirely. She suddenly feels an urge to get to know Louis once more.

The sound of Eva’s mobile phone ringing disturbs the serenity of the moment. Eva answers:
“Hi Honey! You at the airport? … What? You left your file in the hotel room? You’d leave your head behind if you didn’t have it screwed on! … Don’t worry, I’ll make sure I pick it up for you… yes, I will remember to use the extra blanket tonight! See you on Monday, sweetie!”

Eva’s choice of words leaves Louis a little wary.
“Sorry, that was David.” She says to Louis with a little spark in her eyes.
“He is such a clumsy fellow, but he is so sweet – he was worried I’d get cold in the hotel tonight!”

“Oh, I see…” says Louis as his flicker of hope starts to dwindle.
“Have you worked together long?”

“I met David when I first came here. He is Uncle Wo’s nephew and he introduced me into the company where I have been ever since. He’s really smart and he took me under his wing and taught me everything that I know.”
Eva talks about him proudly and a pure smile appears on her face as she does so.

“So you’re kinda close then?” pries Louis.

“Well, we’ve almost been living out of each others’ pockets for the last three years.”
Says Eva enticingly.
“It gets like that when you travel around so much.”

Louis secretly tries to console himself as he finds himself the spare part once again. Eva seems to notice this, but doesn’t respond. There is still an unspoken understanding between the two that time has not eroded. She changes the direction of the subject.

“So how about you? There must be even more ladies falling at your feet now that you are a rich boy once again!” she teases.

Louis doesn’t seem to find this amusing in his current state and answers:
“I’ve been concentrating on my work too much for now. My dad wants to make sure I make up for lost time…”

“Oh… so no beautiful ladies for me to meet then?” jokes Eva, before she senses that Louis doesn’t want to talk about this. She puts in one final jibe:
“So I’m still in with a chance then?”

Louis’ slight flicker of interest is detected and confirmed by Eva, but again she does not respond. Louis finishes off his food and an air of resignation looms as Eva laughs off the joke again and agrees to stop pulling his leg.

The conversation moves on and they talk about their friends in Hong Kong, their upcoming work and re-live some of their more pleasant past experiences, but the mood is platonic like two old schoolfriends who have just met after many years. However, they enjoy the evening and after a lovely meal, they walk out along the harbour front together for some fresh air and to let their food digest.

Admiring the scenery of the bustling waterfront, with the gentle breeze blowing through their hair, Eva and Louis feel so free as they stroll gently in the late spring evening. Louis is a little disappointed as he looks at the girl beside him, so confident and so attractive as she takes in deep breaths and peers out at the sights with such amazing beauty. His ego is bruised again as he feels like he has lost out on her love once again.

Leaning against the railings, Eva calls out to him.
“I feel so happy tonight! I haven’t felt so relaxed for ages…”

Louis nods in agreement, but with his thoughts elsewhere.

“Shame that David has to spend time with his wife tonight!”

Her words take some time to register and process in Louis’ mind before he suddenly looks up and his vision is met with the alluring, cheeky grin of Eva as she starts to laugh loudly and heartily.

Louis picks up her right hand firmly with his left and holds it up to his heart.
“This time I won’t let you let go…”

Danielle - I kinda left the ending open, but with a big hint as to what happens next. Decided to leave it that way so it opens the path up for SD2. I will try and make some progress with my other fanfic before I start formulating SD2 (if at all).

In the meantime - here is a quick plug for my other fanfic... hehe

OMG! I've been so busy lately that I haven't got the time to visit your story and you managed to finish it? Good job!

But I'm only on the first couple of chapters and it's going to take a while to finish. With my obsession with BYJ, updating my story, and my addiction to movies, I think it will take a VERY long time to finish this wonderful story of yours. I love Louis and Eva together.
I'm very tempted to read the ending, but must control myself. hehehehehe
Gotta go, talk to ya later.

Just finished. I did it during my lunch break... he,he,he...

Funnily I imagine Eva as Em's avatar... probs because I know you come from China/HK and move to England, just like Eva's character.

So what else new on your fanfic. Please let me know.

Thanks for your comments, eeyore!
Hahaha ... there is a little bit of me in Eva, but I am a bit more down to earth than her - most of the time anyway!

Currently working on "Curse of the Blade" - a little venture of mine into the world of martial arts and the ancient world. Hope you'll check it out sometime!

Hiya Em
Okay, finished all 15 chapters! Yeah me!
I love the email messages from Eva. It gives a more insightful look into her thoughts and feelings. The ending was great too. But sure wish Louis made some attempt to contact Eva during the three years separation, or vice versa. Anyways, now you have me waiting for the sequel. Can’t wait. Will start on The Curse of the Blade soon. Keep writing and I’ll keep reading. Love your story!

she really enjoyed the story....and i think she shed a few tears hehehe...
she also said that it seems like you held back something....
is it true? is it true?
A thousand times I have failed,
Still your mercy remains
Should I stumble again
For I'm caught in your grace.

Thanks for reading Tweety - glad you enjoyed it! The emails were just me being lazy and not being bothered to write properly, but they gave the desired effect!

Thanks ice_cream for passing on your friend's comments - please thank her for her continued support. Do you think I held back on something?
Actually, I think I held back on a lot of stuff but when you are writing you can't really include everything you want to. Believe it or not, your friend's comment has inspired me on the next direction to take SD - watch out for "Stardust Daydreams" or something along those lines!
