The Deer and the Cauldron 2014 《鹿鼎記》 - Han Dong, Jia Qing, Zhang Meng

I don't think Jia Qing is the best choice for A Ke... She's pretty but just not "A Ke pretty" and nowhere near "Chen Yuan Yuan pretty". Also based on her acting in Demi-God Semi -Devil, she seems better suited to play a more playful character than A Ke's character. But since I don't like A Ke, I don't really care... I do like how they're going for the colorful approach. Although I usually hate it when they overuse colors, I'm looking forward to this because the 2008 version was already dark. It'll give it a more humorous feeling which I hope it will be because I thought the Dicky Cheung version was pretty good (and completely different from the original). Although Shuang Er is my favorite of the wives and I like Zhang Meng, I'm a little tired of her playing all the same type of characters (quiet & demure vibes). Then again, she is worst (or should I say best?) annoying character type so I rather see her playing these types of roles? Okay sorry random thoughts I guess.

I may watch this simply because it's another Zhang Meng / Zhang Xinyu collaboration, the fact that I utterly despise The Deer and the Cauldron, the most overrated and worthless of all of Zha Liangyong's works, notwithstanding.

Horrible time period, inadequate characterization, and barely coherent plot. Why this novel is so critically acclaimed is beyond me. Must be rampant stupidity. The historical events barely even act as a backdrop, let alone integrate into the crappy story.

Granted, this series can't possibly be any worse than Zhang Jizhong's 2008 adaptation. Boy was that ever a steaming hot plate of utter FAIL.

Talk about making something that's already tawdry and valueless even more so.

Thats your opinion. Calm down. Others might like it for its funny aspects, others for the women.

Is it me or do the wives all look a little weird? I dont think any of them (in their costumes and hairstyle) look pretty besides Viann Zhang as Su Quan. Though that hair is outrageous as well. This will be interesting.

After DGSD (2013), I will stomach this story once again just to see more of Jia Qing and Zhao Yuanyuan, who were friggin delightful. Mu Wanqing = Fang Yi. Casting Zhao Yuanyuan in this role was a no brainer, I suspect.

Wei Qianxiang, a familiar face for anyone who watched Prince of Lanling (2013), in the role of Kang Xi.

Lai Shuiqing portraying Ao Bai himself. And here I thought Elvis Tsui was obligated to play the character.

I am not familiar with the current crop of new chinese actors and actresses (more a jap/kor vids fan, due to fatigue from deluge of current period chinese dramas in recent years) but I thought the lead (han dong) looks like an older version of the baddie-disciple (2nd senior disciple) who wanted to get the hero kicked out of Tian Yong City in "Legend of the Ancient Sword (Gu Jian Qi Tan)"...
