Finished the novel. I find Shi Potian's character hilarious, his lines and antiques made me laugh many times. But there's nothing special about the story and the other characters, really. It's just a dumb story about an innocent, dumb yet genius man becoming #1 martial artist through dumb events and accidents that he himself clueless of what he's doing and learning. There's about 1mm depth in the story Wonder how ZJZ gonna visualize all that on screen.

Initially, I thought its gonna be Bai Zizai, but the role is taken... I can't find any other role suitable for him.
He didn't cameo in Royal Tramp 2008 and HSDS09 though.

Yeah, the fact that the chief director is Chung Siu-hung (NOT the usual Yu Min), I think, is a fresh re-start. Though, maybe Chung is hired cos he's a comedy specialist. But it's always nice to see a different directing style, since XAJH01 (directed by Huang Jianzhong) and BXJ07 (directed by ZJZ himself).

Xia Ke Xing is expected to shoot for 7 months. "The Book and The Sword" will start shooting in October, so the timing will overlap, maybe Yu Min will direct "Book & Sword."

Well, his most recent costume productions—namely The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber (2009) and Journey to the West (2011) have exhibited a marked inflation in production values.

Though the general consensus may differ, I personally enjoyed both series immensely.

Looks like producing JTTW sapped Big Beard of all his vitality, and he's just now regaining it ... and preparing for a sprint to the finish line?

Not too enthusiastic about the cast as it currently stands, but if memory serves, quite a few "stars" and "idols" as we know them today were nobodies (I'm sure no one needs me to name names) before Zhang Jizhong cast them in his wuxia productions.

Ironic that ZJZ would cite Huang Xiaoming as a star that he "can't afford" when "Yang Guo" in ROCH was his breakout role, without which who knows where he'd be today (certainly not dating Angelababy or gearing up for a major fantasy film starring alongside Jet Li and Shu Qi).

^ HXM did film duke of mount deer later on, though, as a favor to ZJZ. realistically speaking ZJZ probably isn't able to afford HXM anymore haha. besides, i believe now his focus is much more on films rather than TV?

Either way, if Zhang Jizhong is seriously planning on producing the remaining novels in the Jin Yong canon within a short time span, then I'll probably hold off on watching Fox Volant of the Snowy Mountain (2006), something I was planning on doing, but I think I'd prefer watching a ZJZ adaptation instead, if it's forthcoming.

Could ZJZ be feeling threatened and is trying to beat guys like Yu Zheng and Lai Shuiqing to the proverbial punch?

These guys are producing/directing the first mainland productions of these novels since ZJZ's from the previous decade (with the exception of LOCH '08), so regardless, it's going to be interesting to see how they compare.

Demi-Gods & Semi-Devils (2013), in spite of the general consensus and based on what little I've seen far, is a much cleaner (and not-so-muddled) product than the 2003 version.

I've only seen the first episode of Swordsman (2013), but I enjoyed what I watched and intend to finish the series at some point. As I've never read or watched any adaptation of The Smiling, Proud Wanderer, I can go through the series without bias and truly critique it as an independent entity.

    Thumbs up

[QUOTE=loislane;1079188]Thanks! Currently reading the novel now. So far, looks like this is gonna be as funny as DoMD. The lead, Gouzazhong (Shi Potian) is so dumb, innocent and very funny. I'm loving the character so far.

Cast has been officially announced today in the opening ceremony attended by Zhang Jizhong himself, the directors Zhong Shaoxiong and Zhao Jian, and the three leads.

Cai Yida as Shi Potian & Shi Zhongyu

He has the looks of a rapist, but doesn't have the looks of an innocent... but we'll see...

Your comment is hilarious! Can't agree with you more

Oh yeah... which reminds me, in one of the recent articles, ZJZ said a few of his -big-name actors- friends offered they're willing to be casted in "Xia ke xing" with lower pay, but ZJZ said they should get the pay they deserve so he refused.

Yes, I believe in China, TV is the first step for an actor's career, when they shoot stardom and achieve reputation they'll focus on widescreen films. Interesting that from Zhang Jizhong's production, were born these A-class/leading actors in the film industry, Zhou Xun, Huang Xiaoming, Liu Yifei, Deng Chao. Too bad, Li Yapeng was stuck on TV, the poor guy... now, he retired.

I wonder if ZJZ is not interested in making widescreen films? I'd really like to see him working together with Zhou Xun and/or Huang Xiaoming again. I was hoping he'd make the JY's short novels into widescreen films, but apparently he will comprise Swordswoman Riding West on White Horse, Blade-dance of the Two Lovers, Sword of the Yue Maiden into one TV series (with 3 different stories).

I don't think so, I think he's just doing his own thing. In the recent articles, he said it has always been his dream to adapt all 14 JY novels. Makes me wonder if I misread his previous statement and he actually meant "he's taking a break from JY stuff" after HSDS09?

I watched glimpses of it. I have no intention to watch other Xiao Ao Jiang Hu TV series adaptation in full, as I have found the perfect one in XAJH01, but decided to take a peek of Swordsman Plot deviation, character changes/assassination ASIDE, as a wuxia series I find the Swordsman crews quite lazy in paying attention to little details, the fake scenery is one... another one, after a raining scene, a few minutes lapsed and the characters stayed dry and clean... another one, I find it hard to believe a nun would wear a bright pink uniform and earrings and have long hair, it does make the actresses look cute though (compared to the real-shaved bald nuns with big grey robes in XAJH01). If you're good in suspending disbelief and think that martial artists who uses swords and machete as weapons suits to exist in a fairytale-like world, instead of the harsh and grim wulin world, I think you're gonna enjoy it.

I'm thinking Yu Zheng's style suits RoCH story better as it's mostly about the love story.

haha... I guess its because of the facial hair, makes him look like a criminal. Actually I like his looks, but even when I look at his clean-face photos, I still can't imagine him as the dumb and innocent Shi Potian... yet. Hope he can prove me wrong.

Got these pics from one of the crew's Weibo account.

    Ding Dang!

Is it just me or does she look like Sheren Tang in the costume now?

So far, my favorite Ding Dang (out of 4 DingDang-s) is Sheren Tang, indeed. Ding Dang in the novel can be sweet and cute sometimes, but vicious and mean at another time... I love moments when she just slap Shi Potian's face or tweak his ear everytime he's being dumb, lol. I was really rooting for them to be together in the beginning, (despite Ding Dang's misunderstanding) because they're like the comical (slapstick comedic) version of Guo Jing and Huang Rong, but... I don't want to spoil it, so I'll stop. (how can I make the spoiler tag work?? XD)

Despite the big deviation in the TVB version's plot, I find Sheren Tang is the only one close to novel-DD. The other Ding Dang-s were just so wrong.

So far I'm liking the looks of Zhang Jiani's Ding Dang, really looking forward to her portrayal.

    Wha.... who is that? lol

I thought the slim girl was A'xiu, but she's holding a tray... so is this Shi Jian?
But in the novel, I don't remember her having another servant friend that is... ehem, fat XD Lol, I'm loving the additional character already, she might bring more comedy to the story.

    The sets.

So, IloveMimiLo, what do you think of this hairstyle? hehe
I think it looks, at least, much better than Shi Potian's hair in the 2002 Mainland version

I actually liked Snowy Mountain 2006. My only source of reference was the TVB's '99 adaptation, which was a really bad serial. I have not read the novel, so I don't know how accurate the 2006 adaptation was, but it was refreshing to see it.

I'm sure if ZJZ ever going to do a remake, it won't be for a while. Might as well just enjoy the 2006 adaptation while you wait for a new one.

If you have not seen TVB's State of Divinity '96 or ZJZ's 2001 remake, and have enjoyed Yu Zheng's previous series, then I think you will probably enjoy Swordsman 2013. If you have some source of reference, though, you probably won't enjoy Swordsman 2013 as much.

As for this new Ode to Gallantry, I'm definitely going to check it out. You're right that it has been a while since ZJZ has made a Jin Yong adaptation. His best series were the ones that were made in the early '00s. I definitely enjoyed Smiling, Proud Wanderer 2001, Legend of Condor Hero 2003, and Demi Gods and Semi Devils 2003. His later Jin Yong and Liang Yusheng series, on the other hand, I didn't like as much. Hopefully, this new remake will reminisce of his earlier works.

Well, I'll let you in on a secret—to date I've only seen two of Yu Zheng's productions—Schemes of a Beauty and Beauties of the Emperor. One I've praised to no end and the other I absolutely despised. You can probably figure out which was which.

So I'm still not sure if I enjoy Yu Zheng as a producer or not.

I don't take issue with producers who deviate from the source material, so long as the change is for the better.

Unfortunately, the only work I've seen from Yu Zheng was Swordsman 2013, and I absolutely hated it. I don't know about his earlier series, but I heard they gear towards the "teen idol" audience, which isn't my taste at all.

I, too, don't have any problem with producers taking liberties to adapt novels into television. But the problem is that -- and this was a huge problem since the early 90's during the TVB wuxia era -- the changes they made was not consistent and didn't make sense at all. There were some exceptions --though, very rare -- where the series didn't exactly follow their source material, but they turned out to be successful on screen. Producers tend to over think and try to be creative that, ultimately, hinder the essence of the novel they were trying to adapt.

As for Swordsman 2013, there were a lot of things I didn't like about that series. This is not spoiler but basically he took a very minor character whose purpose in the series was to serve as a symbolism of greed, power, and evil, and he combined that character with one of the main characters to create a totally new character. He also changed the main character from an open minded, carefree individual into an emotional hypocrite. Aside from the changes in the plot and characterization, the presentation itself was just weird -- too much like a fantasy/idol-ish genre than a wuxia serial.

Next Yu Zheng production I plan on watching is Beauty World, which is set against my favorite dynasty (Tang).

That is what I hated in this series too. That character is supposed to appear in only one chapter in the novel, but in the series he appears almost more than Linghu Chong (the protagonist). I would have no problem with that if he actually kept the essence of the character, like in the Jet Li movie, but Yu Zheng completely changed the character. That's why I prefer ZJZ and the 2001 version of SPW. No matter what you say about ZJZ later work, he at least respects Jin Yong's novel and keeps their essence.

By the way, I am also not against TV adaption of JY novels that change the plot, but only when the changer are done well (like Book and the Sword 2008 and LOCH 2008) and keep the essence of the novel. However, when plot changes are made in a bad way, I hate those TV series. And the new Swordsman TV series fall in the second category.

I thought ZJZ only adapt famous novels. So surprise that he decided to adapt 'Ode to Gallantry' which is a comparatively less well known Jin Yong novel.

I'm definitely going to watch this. SPT is my favourite JY wuxia character. Happy to see another portrayal of him. I believe ZJZ will stay faithful to the novel.
