Default What ever became of SMCS's wife and son?

In the later LUK SIU FUNG stories, Sai Mun Chui Sheut abandoned his wife Sheun Sau Ching and their infant son to rededicate himself to mastering the sword...the tragic decision of a man whose life was dedicated to the sword and could not separate himself from it, even for family.

Did the novels ever mention what ultimately became of Sheun Sau Ching and Sai Mun, Jr.? While I can see Sai Mun Chui Sheut's relationship with his wife cooling as the call of the sword beckoned, SMCS was also quite determined to see that his son would grow up to be a master of the sword superior to SMCS himself.

I'm not sure about the novels, but in the serials it was said that Ximen's son was born without arms, and hence would never achieve the ambition which Ximen had for his child. This certainly wasn't mentioned in the Phantom Mansion, but I'm not sure if it was taken from any of the other novels.

If Ximen really had a disabled child it would have been so cruel, and while it's very possible that he would abandon his wife and child (or at least, not spend time with them anymore) it would also paint a very poor picture of this cool character.

I don't recall the "armless son of Sai Mun" being mentioned in any other context than the 1978 TVB series, but Gu Long did indeed have SMCS abandon his wife and son in the later novels ("abandon" as in spending less/no time with them, not leaving them out in the street to starve; he wasn't that graceless). Gu Long seemed to be trying to emphasize the tragedy of dedicating oneself to the sword: it was, at least for SMCS, an irresistible call that denied him any other kind of life.

Didn't the TVB series with Austin Wah show SMCS's family being killed thus leaving him free to pursue the sword?

That is yet another version. Each adaptation seems to do its own variation of this, but most of them find ways of killing SMCS's wife and son off; Gu Long himself, however, never did. They seemed to just quietly disappear from the story.

I read in a Wuxiasociety forum thread that Ximen Chuixue's son and Lu Xiaofeng's student had a duel that resulted in double fatality (both fell off a cliff).. But I think that this was probably mentioned in some later story, and not in the Lu Xiao Feng series proper.

If they just fell off the cliff, the chance that they both will survive is very high. Wuxia is cool, real life suck...

After LXF book 7, Jian Shen Yi Xiao, Gu Long only wrote 4 more novels. So one of those last 4 mention this epic duel.

Honestly, I would have put my money on Ximen's son beating LXF's student. LXF also taught his finger skill to Hua Manlou, but only a super genius like LXF could bring out the full potential of the skill.

I also think that LXF would have been very sad if he learned that this dual fatality occurred.

Not only that, but they likely found some lost old secret martial arts manual that enabled them to increase their inner power a hundredfold.

Indeed; the father figures were such good friends. What would cause the son/student to fight to the death?

Well, it seems that in Gu Long's world, death is an acceptable / expected outcome of a duel, even if it is a friendly one and there are no real hostilities between the combatants.

Though falling off a cliff is definitely not the way I would have expected them to die / kill each other. I wonder how the fight went.
