It is because he is so tall and the water is shallow! If he were to dive head first, he would hit the rocks underneath!

Yeah. I think he is 6'2-6'3? The director did a really good job filming the underwater scene though it's obvious that it's in the pool. I really wished they didn't cut out the coming out of the water part since I saw some pics. The editing was a bit jarring.

    Check out the unedited dialogue:

YQS: If anything bad were to befallen General Wu (Peter Ho), then could such a virtuous woman as Lady Lan Ping live without him. Why don't we include our own lives into the bet, to live together or die together with our husbands, what do you think?

Seems that instead of just gambling with cities int he game of dominoes, Yuwen Yong, General Wu and General Hulie were also gambling with their lives. Not sure why they changed the dialogue in the final cut because I like how Qing Suo is willing to put her own life on the line and risk dying with Yuwen Yong to call his bluff.

Did you see the video where he is pumping muscles with rocks and doing a ton of push-ups to prepare for this scene?

Yes, I've noticed several matching outfits... like the orange/blue outfits (nice color coordination) in the scene when YWY was 'threatening' YQS and she jumped into the pool herself.

    the internet novel

As mentioned previously, there were 2 novels “蘭陵皇妃" and “蘭陵王妃" names written by 2 different authors. But some links have credited “蘭陵王妃" as written by 杨千紫 and sometimes the links contain the story of “蘭陵皇妃" and sometimes “蘭陵王妃" and sometimes nothing but porn pictures that unfortunately do not involve Yong. The endings for both novels are different.

It appears that “蘭陵皇妃" as written by 杨千紫 first's edition novel ends

with a cliff scene where Shuo kinda gives her declaration to Yong

Thereafter, the internet novel continues and ends with that spoiler I first gave MysticDust in post #50.

I later read comments to an addition to the ending which charbydis confirmed in post #62

This ending can apparently be found only in the revised book edition. Unfortunately I have not been able to source this book edition online.

The Romance in the Internet Novel vs Drama
    click to show/hide spoilers
In the novel, Duan Mu Ling in the present seems to have a fascination on LLW. Then she gets transported back in time where she becomes Qingshuo and is married to Yuwen Yong. She encounters LLW and her fascination appears to develop into a crush. There is a scene which looks like the drama would incorporate which makes Shuo realise that all along, LLW has not responded to her affection / declaration. It was always her who made the first move. This lead her to give up on LLW and her romance with Yong develops further.

Towards the end (and yah I suddenly went WTH!) Its explained that Luo Yan and LLW aren’t humans & LLW is under a spell that makes him love only Luo Yan. However, LLW seems to be able to have feelings for Shuo .

So in the novel, there was no backstory to the 3 leads. We do not have the 青梅竹马 ( ie childhood sweethearts) between LLW & QS as in the drama. Usually when there's a 青梅竹马storyline, the tendency is that this couple will end up together. However, Yong and Shuo had an event when they were younger too! That event impacted Yong so much it created a lifelong phobia! I would say that's a really big impact for a guy!

I would actually say that in the drama, the relationship is up for grabs cos both male leads had a childhood experience with her, both have a finance they are going to marry, both have their fair share of love scenes with her (LLW's ones are coming up) and both have their scenes where they both hurt Shuo...

btw, in the drama, we see Shuo calling Yong 'Fu Jun'. In the novel, Duan Mu Ling/ Shuo explains only the first wife is allowed to call the husband 'Fu Jun' so she does it to indicate that their relationship is that of a husband and wife. Totally love that Yong lets her mess around with him.

sorry for such a long post! i shall save my thoughts on the ost for another day!

So regardless of which version of the ending, YQS still dies, but the important factor is that in both versions, it's clear that she loves YWY. However, I think that in the series LLW and YQS will end up together based on the trailer.

Yuwen Yong is drawn to Qing Suo because she is a refreshing breath of fresh air in contrast to the suffocating political mess that he was born into. All his life, he is surround by women who either want to use him for his wealth and status, or for his good looks. But Yuan Qing Suo is interested in none of those. And when she treats him well, it is for who he is and not what he is or will become. I think he appreciates her sincerity and honesty even though she does cause a lot of trouble for him and she reminds him of the bright side of life that has been hidden by all the clouds of conspiracies and hypocrisy around him.
I think another reason that YWY views YQS differently is because she knows about his coverup, that he is fooling YWH, hiding his talent/intelligence, fooling everyone that he is not into politics but only cares about enjoying life and having ladies around him, at least in the novel anyway. In the novel, she understands that he was pretending to support YWH and that his real motive was to overturn YWH. She recognized that he has the capability to be king (she knew from history that he would be the future king). He saw that she was his match and worked well as a team while pretending to be a loving couple, and she recognized his vulnerabilites, his inner feelings. She understood his motives, his political views; however, she was still clueless about his romantic feelings for her in the novel. In the series, she is just blind and can't even see through him at all, romantically or politically, and misunderstands him all the time. Her character seems to be more naive in the series.
Anyway, after episode 18, then YQS probably leaves YWY to be with LLW, so no more YWY for a while until she comes back all heart-broken and injured next time.

YWY: I am not a man who can tolerate loss. If I ever meet you again, I will use all means to make you stay by my side. For the rest of your life, don't even dream of leaving me again.

Scene 2: Yuwen Yong, Yuan Qing Suo
YWY: Remember that you once belonged to me. If Gao Changong dares to treat you badly, you must tell me. Whatever happens, I will take you back. (YQS nods)(YWY laughs) But you would probably not want me to take you back as my second wife.
YQS: Yuwen Yong, I ... I don't detest you and don't deliberately set out to go against you. I know deep in my heart that you are good to me. And I also ...
YWY: Enough. Save your nice words for him. Go quickly. (turns to leave)
YQS: Yuwen Yong! (dismounts from horse and runds to hug him, nearly whacking him in the throat with her hat. YWY hugs her back.

Scene 3: Yuwen Yong, Yuan Qing Suo and the Party Pooper Fairy (Miao Wu Yin)
YWY: I can go with you, but as for Qing Suo, she has her own things to attend to. She will not go away with you.
MWY: Da Sikong, I guess you still have not realised what the outcome of getting in my way us.
YWY: I guess Miss, you have not yet realised what the outcome of harming the most important person to me is.
MWY: (seeing YWY grab YQS's hand) Seems like you won't let go even in the face of death. I want to see how important Yuan Qing Suo is to you.
YWY: At least much more important than the Soul Suppressing Pearl.
MWY: Looks like you won't hand over Yuan Qing Suo.
YWY: Not unless you kill me first (or over my dead body). Or else, don't even dream of harming a hair on her body,
    YQS: Yuwen Yong!
    YWY: Miao Wuyin! Come on!
YQS: (talking to party pooper fairy) The one you want to kill is me. Leave the innocents out of this. Take me!
    YWY: Qing Suo!
MWY: No need to argue! You both need to die!

Scene 4: Yuwen Yong, Yuan Qing Suo, Yan Wan and the Part Pooper Fairy Lan Ling Wang's mum is somewhere in the background
LLW's mum shoots dart at YWY, but ends up grazing YQS, who trips backwards and YW reaches out to grab her hand.
    YWY: Qing Suo!
YW: (after seeing some marks on YQS's shoulder) (voiceover) So these are the marks that the Green Dragon Guardian was looking for. Why would he know of the scald marks on her shoulder? Why does everyone think so much of Yuan Qing Suo?
YQS: Yan Wan! (as YW lets go! )
    YW: Sister Qing Suo!
YWY: Qing Suo! Qing Suo! (bellyflops into water)
YW: Ah Yong! Ah Yong! (and blah blah blah blah)
I can watch that belly flop over and over again. It's too funny!
