Default Out of Time and Space by Xi Juan

Somebody requested this on the forums, so I decided to take a crack at it. This is my first attempt at translating anything like this, so any feedback is appreciated. I've only done the prologue so far but if there's interest I'll keep going.

Original Chinese text is here: http://xijuan.net/xijuan/1-1/001.htm

    Cover Page:

    Out of Time and Space
    by Xi Juan

A lively, lovely girl, she crossed time and space with a dreamy look to be his bride, and touched his cold, lonely heart. Spanning a thousand years’ distance, their love would pierce each others’ hearts…

Edit: Thanks for all the encouragement, everybody! I've made a google docs folder for this translation so anybody who wants to read it doesn't have to dig through forum posts to find each chapter. Just message me and I'll add you to it!

Edit 2: Apparently the link to the text redirects to xijuan.com, which is not a real website. If you want to see the original text, just copy-paste or click and replace ".com" with ".net" in the URL. If anyone can tell me why this happens, please message me.

    Default Prologue

    Prologue
“Mom, you can’t do this! If you make me go into the past, you’ll be blackballed from the community of sorcerers and lose all the abilities you have now!” came a weak voice from a tai chi patterned soul ring, begging her mother to back down from this terrible idea.

The person wearing the ring was a graceful, beautiful woman, about 40 years old, dressed in a black priestess’s oufit. As a top-ranking member of the magical community, she had unique powers to manipulate nature- when she meditated, her soul could escape and wander freely across time and space. But she understood that she must leave no trace behind in the times she visited and she must never change anything- history must be left intact.

Zhu Lirong was very skilled, but she could only go to the past, never the future. She had seen things as ancient as the building of the Great Wall, books being burned on Qin Shi Huang’s orders, and the so-called Tang dynasty, and as recent as the 8-year war and the Nanjing Massacre. Great events in history are more sad than joyful. Civilian lives were worthless under the hegemony of the dynasties that came and went. She never stayed long in any age, as she would be able to do nothing but watch wide-eyed each time the tragedies of history were repeatedly staged before her. Han, Qin, Warring States, Ming, Qing- had every dynasty brought about its rise by killing? The cycle of nations was always the same: they founded, flourished, and decayed- bandits grew numerous and wanton, then the burning and looting began… when she was only 20 years old, after the first time she traveled, she had vowed never to share this ability with anyone, wanting no one else to go into history and see so many people in living in misery right in front of them.

But now, for her daughter’s sake, she would not only return to the past, but violate a terrible taboo of the supernatural community. After today, all of her supernatural abilities would be gone, and she would be nothing more than an ordinary woman. She would be put on trial and expelled from the community anyway. As long as her daughter would stay sane, as long as her daughter had a chance to live again, she did not care if she lost everything!

3 days before. Her daughter, Yang Yi Liu, was killed in a car accident while trying to rescue an old woman. But Zhu Lirong decided that her life should not end there. The dead girl’s soul would be floating in space, chaotic, unknown, unconscious- a mere wisp of gossamer. She could not allow this fate to befall her daughter. But the ring could only hold a soul for seven days, and once those had passed her daughter would be beyond help- she must revive her daughter now. It would not be easy. Of course, finding bodies was simple, but not just any would do. The magnetic field of the target would have to be the same as her daughter’s, and the wavelength and current would have to be consistent between the two bodies.

She had no choice but to extrapolate from one of her daughter’s past lives. Yang Yi Liu had four previous lives, in the early Republic period, the Song dynasty, the Eastern Han dynasty, as well as one existence in a fledgeling life-form in an unexplored part of time and space. The body she chose must also have died accidentally. One who died of old age would be useless, as would a murder victim or someone who had died in an inhumane manner or worse, god forbid. Fortunately, her Song-era life had been sunny years, when youth had flowered! She had also been of a similar age to Yi Liu. She told her daughter, but the girl was firmly opposed.

“Liu Liu, your mama has decided, she doesn’t care if she loses everything. All that matters is that you can go on living,” Zhu Lirong spoke firmly into the ring.

“But mama, is it enough just to be alive? Living in ancient times, living with no sense of identity, living someone else’s life. Someone who will eventually die anyway- what difference do a few more decades make? Besides, I died early in this age too.” Of course, Yang Yi Liu wanted to live longer. But going back to ancient times- that was ridiculous! How could a 20-year-old woman, raised in the 20th century, even begin to imagine how to live back then? There were no cars, no electric lights, and, even more frightening, women of the Song dynasty had approximately the same value as furniture- purely ornamental, not regarded as independent beings with lives worthy of respect. She might as well just die if that was the only alternative!

“Don’t blame me just because you’re too crazy and stubborn, Liu Liu- I’ll send you to that ancient time and you’ll be fine! Though we will be in different places, we will remain synchronized across time and space!” She would not change her mind, no matter what her daughter said.

“But we can’t change history!” Yi Liu continued earnestly pressing her mother.

“Don’t worry- it’s okay to change things just a little, as long as you don’t affect what’s in the history books. All that was written in those days was the stories of kings and their relatives. You are free to alter the destiny of this one insignificant woman. Once you go back into history, you will find that the most exciting things in history are not those kings, ministers, and officials, but the lives of ordinary people. They had to look out for themselves, Liu Liu.”

Zhu Lirong crossed her legs, clasped her hands, and chanted softly: “Come with me, Liu Liu, into time! You will awaken in the past, girl of 18 years… your new life begins now…” as Zhu Lirong murmured her spells, Yi Liu began to lose consciousness, her soul becoming a puff of smoke, wafting from the ring, drawn by a ray of white light into a colorful whirlpool, and at last her mind grew dark...

    Chapter 1

Three men and one woman sat in the stately, ornate chamber.

In the first chair sat a man of about 27 or 28 years, apparently the most senior among them. A straight nose and two cold, profound eyes under a pair of arched eyebrows showed him to be a man of strong, unyielding character. His curved, graceful lips were tightly pressed together. His mouth did not open- any surprise he felt remained internal. The other three were struggling to decide how best to break the silence.

“Big Brother.” The lone woman in the room, an astonishingly beautiful girl, said softly, piercing the solemn atmosphere of the room.

The highest-ranking man raised an eyebrow, the only sign that he had heard his sister, Wuxia, speak. He would never let her be wronged; nor would he be false toward her in any way. But she always seemed to be afraid of him, perhaps because of his stern mode of carriage and speech.

“Big Brother, none of us want you to marry Su Guangping’s daughter. Can’t you change your mind?” said Shi Wuxia, looking hopefully at her brother Shi Wuji.

A joyless smile appeared on Wuji’s face.

“We mustn’t forget, we have only been asked to come to Hangzhou for this wedding!”

“The only reason we’re coming along is to try to dissuade you from this,” the second oldest child, Shi Wu Hen, said mildly, with a look of disapproval on his usually gentle and elegant face.

The third child, Shi Wujie, spoke bluntly:

“Can a man marry his enemy’s daughter? Let us observe the situation carefully and make our plan of revenge before making a match!”

All three younger siblings muttered agreement, as he finished his speech, that they were opposed to their eldest brother marrying Su Guangping’s daughter Su Huaner.

After thinking for a long time, Wuji spoke:

“As a boat rides a current, I take advantage of the opportunities which present themselves to me.”

Looking into the puzzled faces of his three companions, he continued:

“Su Guangping wants me to marry his daughter for two reasons. The first is that doing so will allow him to investigate my financial affairs. In just 10 short years we’ve gone from being penniless to having total commercial supremacy over the six northern provinces- he must be very curious as to how we’ve done it, not to mention jealous of all our properties. Second, he is very wary of me- he’s always terrified that I’ll be able to take advantage of him when we do business together. If I marry his daughter, we will become family, and, so he supposes, I will be unable to harm him. That’s what he thinks, anyway.”

Su Guangping had a third reason to be cautions. No one could train a group of men braver than the imperial army to protect their interests; still, Shi Wuji had cultivated his own legion of men of notable gallantry and distributed them among the industries he controlled, comprising farms, banks, wine houses, restaurants, land management, and too many others to name.

There was careful reasoning behind everything Wuji did; once he had considered the facts, weighed the possible outcomes, and made his decision, no force on earth could sway him from it.

Even his siblings, no matter how strongly opposed they were to one of his decisions, would say nothing, knowing that to argue against him was no use.

“Are we allowed to be open about our feelings for this unwanted sister-in-law of ours?” said Shi Wujie, looking at his elder brother with raised eyebrows.

“When she is not around,” Shi Wuji replied, his brows level over closed eyes, not out of weariness, but resting, as he always did when he was thinking. This had the side effect of bringing the conversation to a halt without further discussion of any topics.

Each of the others went into their own respective thoughts, allowing the chamber to fall silent once more, in stark contrast to the commotion just outside the door. All around, servants were furiously cleaning and putting up posters marked with the character “囍”, signifying a happy wedding. The prince of the capital city was getting married, an enormous event for such a tiny hall. Although the bride would be there only one night, returning north before the banquet, they had made sure that the makeshift houses in the guest annexes were of a beauty befitting her, bringing joyful smiles to the faces of everyone around.

Yang Yi Liu felt as though she was dying of thirst. She was close to collapsing from weakness. But no part of her body hurt more than her throat, which burned as though it was on fire. Perhaps this pain affected her nerves. For some reason her head suddenly began to ache as though it would explode.

After many days, she no longer felt physical pain. Oh, had she still not become attached to the body of one of her past lives? Mama had not said that regaining life would be so awful… heavens! She might as well just die. The last time it happened, at least, there had been only a little pain. Though her thoughts were still muddy and confused, at length she heard her mother’s voice.

“Liu Liu, goodbye, have a good rebirth and a good life- Mama must go now, and remember, you are living on behalf of Su Huaner- from now on, you ARE Su Huaner……Goodbye, my child…”

“Mama-” she tried to shout, stopping suddenly as a burning sensation filled her throat...

A hoarse voice came to her.
“I ordered Su Yuan Wai to heal my daughter’s injuries. But in her current condition it will be impossible to perform the wedding tomorrow. We’ll have to delay for two days at least.”

Another voice, filled with rage, shouted:

“Even if she’s dead, I’m going to call the team to carry her on her palanquin. She’s got to be married tomorrow!” This voice then proceeded to dismiss everyone. “Get out, all of you!”

Who was it? Who was it? Was she just imagining this strange voice?Or could it be real? She struggled to open her eyes, but a sudden rough spasm ran through her body and she was wracked with pain.

“Do you really think you can die and just be done with it?You dare to die- think again!I’ve supported you so much, and this is how you reward me!Do what I tell you to- don’t try to disobey!Defy me again and I’ll see to it that your mother and sisters are beaten to death!”

Yang Yi Liu weakly opened her eyes, glimpsing an old and hideous face, and let out a gasp, unable to speak… heavens!Who was this person? What kind of chaos had her mother thrown her into?Who was this silk-robed man with a terrifying face in front of her?

“My lord, three ladies have arrived,” came a clear voice from outside the door.

“Come in!” the elderly man said roughly.

As soon as he finished speaking, two maidservants entered, escorting a middle-aged woman. The middle-aged woman was extraordinarily beautiful and delicate, and the timidity on her brow made it only more charming.

      The old man roared:
“She’s your daughter!Make her wake up!” thinking fast, the two girls got out of the way. He laid a strong, pitilessly heavy slap on the face of the middle-aged woman known as Hua Siyu, whose emaciated body, unable to take the force of the blow, fell to the bed, slid to the floor, and curled up, without crying out, only trembling with fear as tears covered her tiny face.

“If you can’t make her obey before tomorrow, a slap in the face won’t be all you get!I’ll hand you over to the torturers and let the Grand Duchess execute you.”The old man fiercely spat these cruel words, looking with satisfaction at the terrified woman, who was shaking like a leaf in the wind. Then, shooting her one last look of utter disdain, he turned and left. The two servant girls wordlessly ran out after him.

A long, long time passed. Beside the bed, the delicate middle-aged woman, supporting herself on the bed frame, lifted herself to a sitting position. Her face covered in tears, she took Yang Yi Liu in her arms.

“Huaner, Huaner, I should never have given birth to you, I should suffer alone, It seems my whole life is destined to be this way,I can’t bear it,the best thing for me would be to die. But the heavens as well have been unfair to you, to allow you to be born into such a terrible family, to let you be my daughter, doomed to prolong my suffering for a lifetime. Oh, Huaner, my child! Last night the news reached me that you had hanged yourself- I have been weeping since then, weeping that you were finally free, and weeping with grief for you. Why did you become the only good thing in this terrible household? I am weak, bullied, trampled by others……” the woman sobbed soundlessly, broken-hearted.

Innumerable tears filled Yang Yi Liu’s eyes. This woman must be Su Huaner’s mother! The lean, thin-boned woman was still beautiful, but her magnificent sillk clothes could not cover her sad, suffering heart……This feeble woman had endured much suffering from her male-dominated society! This was clearly not the first time she had been subjected to physical violence by the vicious old man, and the threats he had left in his wake promised something more terrible than the harm he had inflicted moments ago.

Heavens! Were all the men of the Song Dynasty like this? What an era she had arrived in! Alas, she had definitely arrived, and would survive in the place of Su Huaner, and she now had an obligation to help Su Huaner’s mother. Yang Yi Liu, Yang Yi Liu! You’ve gotten mixed up in something too big, and now there’s nothing you can do!And this isn’t the 20th Century, where men and women are equal, but an ancient era where men are supreme. At the same time as the men were full of undeserved pride, the insignificance of women was clearly visible! In this time period, the value of women was roughly the same as that of furniture, her thoughts coldly reminded her.

This was really the way things were. But she could not give up!Yang Yi Liu softly embraced her “mother.” Now she must carefully scout out the state of affairs in this household which had driven Su Huaner to suicide……she cleared her throat, realizing that the burning pain was no longer so intense, and she was able to produce low, rough speech.

“He……wants me to get married, and if I don’t, he’ll come after you again?”

The beautiful woman nodded sadly, wiping away the terror in her eyes.

In this family, the mother and her daughter were alone. They held each other, helpless to stop themselves from crying. Now the daughter ringed her mother firmly in a pair of guarding hands. The older woman had no time to question where the strength which enabled this gesture had come from; she only greedily took in the feeling of security they gave her.

The beautiful woman, pretending to be brave, began to talk:
“It doesn’t matter what he does to me, Huaner. You must not agree to the atrocities he demands of you which offend heaven and reason. He wants you to investigate Prince Shi and steal his books. Your father wants to destroy him……”

“My father?” a cry of alarm escaped Yang Yi Liu’s mouth, cutting off the middle-aged woman’s speech. Oh God!That awful man was Huaner’s own father, and the middle-aged woman’s husband!

The beautiful woman, not detecting the astonished doubt in her daughter’s voice, continued the speech which had been suddenly interrupted:“I got a glance at this Prince Shi once before- he is a very… fearsome man. If he knew why you were marrying him, he would surely beat you to death. Your father is too stubborn, he refused to pick another girl but insisted on sending you to your death, not even caring that you are his own flesh and blood……he, he truly is a ruthless, cold-blooded beast!Huaner, if you do not betray Prince Shi, as his wife, he will probably not mistreat you. Go get married! You must not think of me, in your far-away life which must be much better than the one you have here.” she finished speaking and tears once more poured from her eyes.

Yang Yi Liu felt that her body had returned to full consciousness. Her mother wiped away tears with a silk handkerchief. Her presence in this era was now a fact of life. Now there was only one thing she wanted to do, and that was to rescue this poor woman from the hell she was living in. To allow her a good life: she must achieve this however she could.

“Mother, listen, I will marry him, but surely I must be able to bring you along with me into my new life……”

The door suddenly slammed open, interrupting Yang Yi Liu before she could finish speaking. Four black-robed servant girls stood at attention as a beautiful woman came in. The woman, dressed in red with a face that indicated a spoiled life, sneered at Su Huaner’s mother.

“Lady Yu, why is your face swollen up like a great steamed bun?”

“Miss Jiu, I beg you, Huaner just now awoke, she’s still very weak……”Lady Yu tried to stop the woman in red from bullying her daughter, bowing so far her head nearly touched the floor, but her face was once again covered in new tears.

“Get out of the way!” the woman shoved Lady Yu aside.

“What have you come to do?” Yang Yi Liu promptly extended a hand to support Lady Yu.
Her tone of coldly self-sustaining calm was one nobody had ever seen before, and even the red-dressed woman looked down at her in shock.

Su Hong Xiang, the ninth daughter of the Su family, was a stunning goddess of a young woman whose only pleasure had only ever been bullying others. She was particularly enjoying watching Lady Yu curled up and crying. There was something different about Su Huaner today, but she could not say precisely how. She was just as delicate as before, just as beautiful——beauty that made Hong Xiang despise her!Ever since Su Huaner had reached adulthood, countless princes from great families had paid visits to their home to request marriage to her, showing little interest in her four unmarried sisters. Even the man with whom Su Hong Xiang was smitten fell for Su Huaner, a crime which Hong Xiang could not forgive, and for which she hated Huaner down to the bone.

The woman in red, looking on with viciousness on her face, wanted to know, and could not avoid being from the same mold as the old man. At any rate, this was no longer the same Su Huaner who would never dare to resist no matter how she was bullied.

Su Hong Xiang let out an ear-piercing laugh:
“Congratulations on not dying, Su Huaner. You’re going to have the richest man in the six northern provinces for a husband! They call him “The Demon of the North”- a suitable name for a man like Shi Wuji. As soon as you hear his terrifying name you know how strange he is. What luck you had in being matched up with him, you ****! Don’t think that once you’re married he’s going to treat you like a beautiful flower and let you rest in the lap of luxury the rest of your life. Men of the north take their wives to entertain guests, one hundred men to one woman. Once you’re married you’ll be his prostitute, not his soul mate!I’m very thankful that you didn’t succeed in dying; otherwise they would have wanted me to marry that devil. Thank you so much, you little ****!” she stood waiting for Su Huaner’s eyes to fill with tears.

But Su Huaner did not cry. The new Su Huaner disdainfully ignored the empty, childish taunting of her sister and coldly began to speak:

“Are you done?If you’ve finished talking, please leave. I still have some business to take care of and I need to see our father so I can speak with him.” Though she was done talking, Su Huaner did not think she could open her mouth to call the old man.

“You ****!” once Su Hong Xiang had finished letting out more verbal abuse, she raised her hand to strike her sister.

“Stop that!” came the voice of the old man from the doorway.

Su Hong Xiang stayed her hand, but stomped her feet on the floor, then turned and walked out.

“Come with me to the study, I'm going to explain what I want you to do.” his eyes were filled with both hate for the mother and daughter and a kind of self-satisfaction!He was certain that this mother and daughter, too weak to truss a chicken, must inevitably yield and fall under his tyrannical authority. When Su Guangping met Su Huaner’s gaze he couldn’t stop himself from staring;those eyes were coldly fearless. It had to be his imagination! Those were not the eyes of the feeble, cowardly girl he knew! She was not a woman with that kind of personality,he thought, turning to go. The Su Huaner he knew would soon comply with his orders

Yang Yi Liu hurried after him, taking stock of the enormous Su family residence. The pavilions, the rock and flower gardens, the artificial rivers with tiny bridges. It was lavish but unbearably vulgar. Were all rich families in this ancient era like this?Every building was covered in a layer of garish fake gold leaf.

The “study” might have been the least overwrought area of the house. It held a desk with a few books on it, and all four walls were covered in paintings from past dynasties……very good ones, including one of Wang Wei, a genuine work by Yan Zhenqing, and some calligraphy by Wang Xizhi……all hanging together, the factions mixing in a hilariously tacky mess.

Su Guangping scribbled crookedly on a piece of white silk, in characters that looked like those made by a small child just learning to write.

“Accounts”——made the crooked characters and then shoved them in front of her, looking at her wordlessly before she
    said:“What’s this?”

“If you have some way of getting into Shi Wuji’s study, if you see some books with this written on them, you must bring them to me- this means they are his account books.”

Apparently he coveted the property of others!Su Guangping continued speaking:“I want you to scout out Shi Wuji’s affairs, pay attention to him and the people he has dealings with, as well as the enormous number of properties he has. Most importantly, I want a copy of the topographic map of ‘Aolong Castle.’ You must get a hold of that at any cost”

“Aolong Castle?” she did not understand.

“Shi Wuji’s castle! The place where he lives. Do exactly as I say, or your mother will suffer” he said, again adopting a threatening tone.

Yang Yi Liu frowned slightly as she made her request:
“If I do exactly as you say, will you let her go? I want her to come live with me.”

“I will allow it, so long as you make no attempt to overstep your boundaries.” Su Guangping agreed without thinking, but he laughed internally: Is anything this easy?He had tricked this stupid girl, and nothing more.

“Go on!Go have a servant dress you up; you’re getting married tomorrow.”

Yang Yi Liu turned and walked out. In her mind a plot was brewing.

      The ceremony was very simple.

Shi Wuji sent his brother Wujie to attend the marriage on his behalf. He skipped all the ancient rites, simply paying his respects to the gods and, not staying any longer than was absolutely necessary, lifted the bride into the carriage, and told the driver to make straight for the north! There was no banquet, no notification of the relatives, no bustle or excitement. Aside from the great banners over the doorways, everything was as calm and quiet as on any other day.

The Su family had married off two sons and five daughters, all in wantonly extravagant ceremonies, displaying their wealth everywhere. This time, when the man their daughter was marrying was the financial hegemon of the north, should by all rights have been even more lavish. The sad truth was that the two families had actually quietly met to swap Su Huaner for money like a concubine, or just as one would sell a slave girl.

Lady Yu hid in the house, weeping for how her daughter had been wronged.

Su Guangping’s face displayed a crafty, self-satisfied smile.

The four unmarried Su girls each celebrated inwardly that they had not been forced to be the bride, as well as being happy that a certain thorn in their collective side had been removed, and it seemed that for her, life would only get worse. She would not exactly be living like a princess.

The primary and secondary wives of the Su family were also happy to be busy seeking out candidates for their own marriageable daughters. Are you afraid of being like little Su Huaner, the girl no one wants?
