He mentioned in passing that his father came back from Mainland China with some kind of STD acquired from prostitutes, which he then transmitted to the mother and "Uncle Wang." But there was no further elaboration on that. Assumably it happened in the two years interval in the story where they are just doing training, and apparently it didn't cause the mom and dad to split up, as evidenced by the scene where they have dinner.
