While just speculation the first book was to give background to the Teng Qing Shans (I think I spelled his name right) rise in ancient times where he will be superior to everyone else because he will use modern technique to reach the higher realm unlocking all meridians and then he will be able to absorb the worlds energy into his muscles allowing him to do some unprecedented in the world. At least that's what it seems like to me but the purpose of showing deception of world energy then going back in time I would say it seems likely.
