This series is a rare gem. Totally addictive watch.

Plot

The story is about an 18yo girl called Tang Dou Dou, who owns a tofu shop with her mother. Dou Dou has a title 'Tofu Si Shi' (tofu because she sells tofu, Si Shi inferring great beauty as Si Shi was one of the 4 great beauties of Chinese history). Li Qin is quite luminous in period costume by the way. Her character is very forward, righteous, and seems to be quite a martial arts hand. All the social mamas love her, everyone wants to marry her. But, Dou Dou has sworn to only marry a dedicated and loving Zhuang Yuan Liang (scholar who becomes #1 in the imperial exams, usually synonymous to highest achievable status and success by a commoner).

Through trickery, the wealthy Shen family arrange for Dou Dou to marry their oldest son, Shen Bo Nan. Bo Nan has a title of Wonderous Child, as he achieved the first level scholarly status at the age of 7 (most get it at adulthood). Unfortunately, Bo Nan fell down the stairs and hit his head, forever staying mentally at the age of 7 even though he is now 22yo. Dou Dou doesn't realize what type of man she is marrying until their wedding night...

The wedding night has to be one of the most hilarious and best scenes. The one thing that made this series shine the most for me was the excellent performance from the two leads. Especially Jin Shi Jia who played Shen Bo Nan. A child-in-an-adult's body is not an old concept, yet it can easily be an over-the-top performance. Jin Shi Jia handled the role of Bo Nan with such an attention to detail - from his body language, speech, mannerisms - that I it felt like a veteran actor performing. I'm not usually interested in puppy love, because it requires a level of convincing innocence, and not many do that well. Bo Nan's sheer devotion to Dou Dou felt surprisingly real. In one of the many separation scenes, Bo Nan's cries for Dou Dou to come back to him hit me right in the heart. I liked that Dou Dou didn't like Bo Nan at first, but she eventually mellowed and was moved. The scene when you know she is deeply touched, and Bo Nan has got through to her: re-wind worthy scene.

This is not a spoiler, because it's in the trailer: Bo Nan recovers and becomes 'normal'. Some crazy melodrama ensues - worthy of a Kdrama - but it's amazing to see the 360 degree change in Bo Nan. It's like two completely different people. While I loved child-Bo Nan, adult-Bo Nan seemed like an uptight jerk.

It's supposed to be an 'Idol Drama' some of Dou Dou's mannerisms seemed really modern. She was a rather outrageous character in her own right, so it didn't seem so bad. This is ironic as Li Qin is a trained opera singer-performer, so she would've been right for the more demure noble lady.

Xu Hai Qiao, who plays Yu Wan Quan, looked so familiar to me. I was wracking my brains on where I had seen him. He plays the young emperor in the upcoming Hua Qian Gu.

The show also scored themselves some really memorable oldies. Howie Huang who is like in nearly everything I see of Cdrama these days (Zhu Ge Zheng Wo in The 4 Young Constables). Cheng Pei Pei who was a Hong Kong silverscreen martial art darling. The super hilarious King Tan Yuen as Dou Dou's mother (near regular in Stephen Chow's early movies and also sold tofu with Michelle Yang in the movie Wing Chun).

Some early news said that the costumes and accessories were custom ordered from Japan and Korea. Smart move, because yes, both Japan and Korea snapped up the series not long after it was out. I must say, the detail in the costume was very impressive.

There is a claim that the plot is an original script. I didn't think so, so I went digging. I found an online Chinese novel so similar to the plot that I'm fairly sure the film script is a rip-off of it. The novel is called Lu Shui Dian Dou Fu (Brine Tags Tofu) by Lu Xian. I'm currently reading it at the moment . One of the things that is in the novel but not in the show, is that Bo Nan gets told by his mother that a 'kiss' will always make pain and discomfort disappear. Bo Nan starts claiming Dou Dou's kisses innocently for all sorts of childlike discomforts. He even initiates one himself when he sees Dou Dou is unhappy one day. She didn't know whether to yell or laugh at him! (The novel characters don't have same names, but I used show ones to be consistent).

Well, I hope Hua Qian Gu turns out fabulously. Otherwise, I'll be pining for another amazing show to top Amazing Bride.

The 2 leads are totally amazinG especially the male lead. Is he the same guy in cosmetology high with yang rong? Cos he looks much skinnier in cosmetology.

P.s basically agree with nudafu...if nudafu gives a good review, chances that the show is good is very high.

Btw Imho this is much better than lan ling Wang...at least the characters developmentioned are explainable.

Off to marathon the remaining episodes!

Yes, it is the same male lead as the one in Cosmetology High. There has been a lot of discussion about Jin Shi Jia's difference in look in the two shows on the Chinese forums. I believe it is because the chubbier look helped to enhance the child-like quality of Shen Bo Nan when he still had the mentality of a 7yo.

P.s basically agree with nudafu...if nudafu gives a good review, chances that the show is good is very high.

Watching this right now and up until this point it IS a gem! Bo nan is the cutest thing...the actor who plays him makes bo nan so endearing you just wanna give him a big hug! He's childish without being cringy or annoying. Him and dou dou's interactions feels genuine as well

BUT! Since bo nan became more adult-like again he is not very like-a-ble and I'm feel bad for dou dou and even dai dai! I find the chemistry between adult bo nan and dou dou not that great either even when they were lovey dovey when he first becomes an adult and the plot is also getting kinda dramatic. please tell me it gets better!! >.<
