****************
Sweet Fragrance

After what seemed like a never-ending day, the sun slowly appears in the distant sky, signifying a new day. Today is a special day. The emperor’s sixth queen had just given birth to a son. The dreary and monotonic atmosphere of everyday palace life is disrupted for this occasion.

This is apparent in the servants and maids. Since the child was born, they were summoned to prepare an elaborate feast in honor of the emperor’s new son.

Wing Yi, overwhelmed by fatigue and weariness, was oblivious to all the commotion that was taking place. Not until Gai Gong Gong knocked on her bedroom door, did she even raise an eyelid.

Gai Gong Gong came in with a basin of hot water and some bandages as well as a big smile.

Even though Wing Yi could not barely focus her tired eyes on the room, but she could already clearly see that Gai Gong Gong was in a good mood today.

“Wake up child,” he said in a jolly tone, coming over to help her sit up. “How are you feeling?”

“A little tired but that’s it,” she answered him with a yawn.

“Well, here’s the basin,” he said pointing to the basin beside her bedpost. “Do you think you can change your bandages by yourself since I have to go.”

“What’s the rush Gai Gong Gong?” Wing Yi said nervously. “Is there something wrong?”

Gai Gong Gong looks at her and shakes his head, “No, no, thank goodness. This time it is good news. The emperor is blessed with another son.”

Listening to him, Wing Yi could now make out the sounds of people outside.

“Oh,” she said with a smile. “That’s why the palace seems so noisy today.”

“Yes, yes,” Gai Gong Gong said happily. “The birth of a child always brings the palace more life.”

He then suddenly remembers that he had to return to his duties.

“Wing Yi,” he said abruptly, getting up. “The basin is here for you to change your bandage, but I cannot change them for you now since I have to attend to my duties. Can you manage on your own?”

“Yes, Gai Gong Gong,” Wing Yi said with a smile, followed by another yawn. “Can I do anything to help?”

“Now that you mentioned it,” he paused and then contemplated. “Ceuk needed a helping hand with picking the floras in the garden. Maybe if you are feeling well enough, you can go help.”

“Yes, yes!” Wing Yi sang out with excitement, afraid to stay in the quarters alone for the entire time. “I am feeling all better now, see?”

She gets out of bed and stood up straight.

Gai Gong Gong laughed at her sad attempt and replied, “Alright, I’ll tell Tieu Ceuk Tu to come by in a little while to take you there.”

“Thank you Gai Gong Gong,” she said happily, beaming.

“I left some dimsum for you on the table,” he instructed as he got to the door. “I’ll see you at noon then. Be careful.”

With that said, Gai Gong Gong disappeared into the corridors.

Wing Yi, moving as quickly as her wounds would allow her, managed to change her bandages. The wounds were healing quite nicely considering what happen with Xie, even though Wing Yi would grimace once or twice when moving them.

After she was finished eating her dimsum, Wing Yi opened the door and looked out. Everything was unfamiliar. The corridors were lined with colorful lanterns and pots of red and yellow flowers. Maids and servants crowded the corridors as they transport all sorts of fruits and other assortments.

“Hi,” Wing Yi would say to the passers by. Not surprisingly, they did not really noticed her since they were too preoccupied.

“I wonder when Tieu Ceuk Tu will be here,” she pondered, closing the door.

Just as she almost fully shut the door, a hand poked in. Wing Yi immediately opened the door, knowing it was Ceuk. And sure enough, when she opened the door, she found the panting, half-out-of-breathe Tieu Ceuk Tu smiling at her.

“I’m finally here!” he said with much excitement. “Ready Tieu Wing Tu?”

“Yeah,” Wing Yi said, making a pout. “I thought you wouldn’t come.”

“I am here now, right?” he joked, helping her out and closing the door. “So are you feeling better?”

“Yes, much,” Wing Yi replied with a smile. “Although I am kind of tire still.”

“Sleeping is not in the agenda today my friend,” Ceuk joked. “Come on, the flowers are not going to pick themselves.”

Once out in the corridor, Ceuk had to make an effort to keep Wing Yi and himself from being run over by the crowd.

“Excuse us,” he kept saying, leading Wing Yi to the enormous garden.

Flowerbeds lined the walkway. The garden looks like a field of flowers of different shapes, sizes, and not to mention color. The vibrancy and diversity are nothing Wing Yi has ever seen before.

“Wow, it is so beautiful!” Wing Yi said in a combination of shock and awe.

“Yeah, this is the best time of the year for flower picking,” Ceuk agreed as he and Wing Yi walked over.

It was evident that they weren’t the only ones in the garden. About six old eunuchs were busy picking the flowers, carefully trimming off the stems. They, like the others, were too busy to notice anything else. One or two of them did look up, but then immediately focusing their attention on their work.

“Well, let’s get started,” Ceuk going over to get two scissors and two flower baskets. “One for you and one for me.”

“Thanks,” Wing Yi said, taking the basket and hanging it on her left arm.

“Watch out for your elbows,” Ceuk reminded her and then pointed over at the medium height flower shrub. “Okay, let’s start over there. I think that this will be better, since you don’t have to reach for the flowers that much.”

Wing Yi nodded obediently.

Ceuk started out by demonstrating the basic techniques and in no time, Wing Yi was clipping away. Surprisingly enough, after fifteen minutes, Wing Yi’s basket was already full with freshly cut flowers. Wing Yi and Ceuk happily clipped away, attention absorbed in their work.

Wing Yi was both enjoying the sweet fragrance emitted as well as the feel of being in the outdoors.

Then, walking in through the round gate passage that leads to the flower garden was Wen Zhuo, his mother, and her maid.

*****************
The Flower

“What a gorgeous day!” Lady Jiao said weakly with her maid holding on to her left arm and Wen Zhuo holding her right. She stops for a moment to take in the aroma that pervaded the air.
“Mother,” Wen Zhuo said with worry. “Do you need to rest now?”

“No, no,” she convinced him with a weak tap of her right hand on his arm.

When they came through the round gate, everyone working on the garden looked up. Almost immediately, the maids and servants dropped whatever they were doing to greet them.

“Good morning everyone,” Lady Jiao returned their kind greetings. “Everything is so different from what I remembered,” She said to herself.

Although no one has ever seen her, they all recognized that she was indeed Duke Fai Jun’s wife. Since the birth of the emperor’s new son, Duke Fai Jun has spent the time with the emperor in his moment of joy. Words spread that he was bringing his son and his wife along.

Wing Yi and Ceuk both looked up at the same time when they heard the servants greeting. Wing Yi and Ceuk were both located farther away from the gates so they could only make out three figures walking in. At first Wing Yi thought it was the emperor, but as it turned out, she looked up and saw a familiar face.

“Tieu Ceuk Tu,” Wing Yi whispered. “I think I know that person.”

“You mean the guy?” Ceuk answered, peering in for a closer look. “I think that is Duke Fai Jun’s son. The woman must be his mother. And guess what? I heard that she hasn’t left her house for a least two years.”

“Really?” Wing Yi was curious to know. “What wrong with her?”

“Um…I am not sure, but I heard people say that she is stricken with an incurable illness for all this time,” Ceuk whispered, eyes still on the three people.

“Oh,” Wing Yi replied and nodding her head. “Poor lady.”

“Well, let’s get back to work,” Ceuk insisted and then commenced with cutting.

With her health, the three made their way around the garden ever so slowly. More times than not, the woman would stop to smell the flowers.

During this time, Wing Yi continued cutting faster and faster.

“You’re a quick learner,” Ceuk complimented her with a girlish smile. “You’ve picked the shrub bare.”

“Thanks,” Wing Yi said with a smile. “Is there more for me to do?”

Ceuk looks around and his eyes finally spotted a small shrub that was located on the right corner of the garden.

“Oh, there seems to be some more over there,” Ceuk pointed out. “Let’s go over there.”

The two carried their baskets over to the small shrub and begin snipping away. Both were unaware that three figures were slowly approaching them.

“What a magnificent fragrance!” Lady Jiao commented to her son.

Wen Zhuo smiles and releases his hold of her to go over to the two servants, who were bent over picking the flower.

“Excuse me,” Wen Zhuo said politely.

Wing Yi was the first to turn around. To her surprise, she saw Wen Zhuo’s polite smile.

“Hello sir,” she managed to utter.

At that moment, Ceuk looked up and realized it was indeed Wen Zhuo.

“Oh, Lady Jiao and Master Wen Zhuo,” Ceuk bowed. Seeing this Wing Yi also bowed respectfully. “What can I do for you?”

Wen Zhuo spoke up, “We were admiring the flowers. Do you mind if I picked one for my mother?”

“Oh, not at all,” Ceuk said cheerfully.

“Thank you,” Wen Zhuo said and went over to pick one.

Unfortunately he could not pick the flower because the stem was too thick and sinewy.

Seeing his difficulty, Wing Yi goes over and offers him her scissor. “These should help.”

“Um…thank you,” he said, taking the scissors, snipping off the lavender flower, and returning the scissors to Wing Yi.

Wen Zhuo walked over to where his mother and her maid was standing.

“Here mother,” he hands Lady Jiao the flower and then looks at her face. Lady Jiao’s complexion was a little whiter than before. “Mother, I think we should return home now. I’ll go tell father.”

With what strength she still has left, she grabs his arm to stop him. “I’ll be fine. I just need to go inside and take my medication. There’s no need to bother your father.”

Before Wen Zhuo left, he said to Wing Yi and Ceuk, “Thank you for the flowers.”

“We hope you will feel better Lady Jiao,” Ceuk bowed again respectfully. Wing Yi smiled and bowed as well.

“Thank you,” Lady Jiao replied weakly.

With that said, they headed back from where they had come from.

Wing Yi looks on as they disappeared through the gates.

“She looks very weak,” Wing Yi concluded.

“No doubt,” Ceuk quickly agreed and then tapped Wing Yi on the shoulder. “Come on, it is already lunch time.”

“It is noon already?” Wing Yi said with astonishment.

“Yeah, come on,” Ceuk said happily, picking up the flower baskets. We just have to drop this off and then we can have some lunch. Steamed dumplings on me.”

The day went by extremely fast, unlike yesterday. Before she realized it, nighttime was quickly descending upon them. After lunch Wing Yi decided to help Ceuk out with a few more quick chores since it was better than staying in the quarters alone. She got a chance to help put up lanterns and even wiping dishes. Wing Yi did not mind the work at all. In fact, back at the brothel, she used to perform similar chores everyday. She enjoys being useful, and the work helps keep her mind from wandering.

Gai Gong Gong had been extremely busy the whole day. Wing Yi and Ceuk had waited thirty minutes for him before eating their lunch. Of course, Wing Yi was a little worried but she knew that he was very busy running his errands. Not until the late afternoon did Gai Gong Gong return. Ceuk provided the food for Wing Yi to set up dinner. Just as she was finished setting down the chopsticks, Gai Gong Gong walked in, tired but smiling.

“Finally, I’ve finished with the last errand,” Gai Gong
Gong sat down on the stool. “So Wing Yi, how was your day child? And your wounds?”

“Very busy but fun too!” Wing Yi said excitedly. “And my wounds did not bother me at all.”

“Very good. I think you are healing quite nicely,” Gai Gong Gong concluded. “Alright, it is getting late. Let’s eat.”

After dinner, Gai Gong Gong and Wing Yi both retired to their own rooms. Wing Yi did not realize it, but she was very tired. And for the first time since she was here, Wing Yi fell fast asleep. A sleep that was peaceful and undisturbed.

******************
The Unwanted Guest

Another day has begun, signified by the rising sun. After finding out about his wife’s little incident in the garden, Duke Fai Jun excused himself to the emperor. The emperor had insisted that Fai Jun should return promptly home with her. But because Enjun and Wen Zhuo were such good friends, Duke Fai Jun asserted that Wen Zhuo stay in the palace for a little while longer. Wen Zhuo wanted to go home to help take care of her, but he had to abide by his father’s wishes.
So early in the morning, Duke Fai Jun and Lady Jiao departed. Wen Zhuo and Enjun were both there to see them off.

“Hey, don’t look so down,” Enjun tried to raise Wen Zhuo’s spirits. “Come on, let’s go have some dimsum. Let’s eat in the pavilion.”

Wen Zhuo reluctantly agreed.

Sitting in the pagoda, the two drank some mild wine and dined on some quick dishes.

“So how’s your mom doing?” Enjun started the conversation.

“I’m not sure,” Wen Zhuo said, putting down his chopsticks and gazing out at the pond. “I am afraid,” he said quietly. “I am afraid that…I don’t know how much longer she can withstand it. All the doctors we have contacted told us the same thing…incurable.”

“Don’t worry, there must be a someone that can help her. Don’t give up hope yet,” Enjun reassured him.

The cool morning breeze ruffled the leaves on the weeping willow tree beside the pond. The two friends remained quiet as they finished off their meal. Only after did Wen Zhuo started to talk, in hopes of getting his mind off the matter.

“Enjun, guess who I saw today?” Wen Zhuo asked him with a sad smile and a weak tone.

Enjun took a quick sip of his wine before putting it down.

“Who?” Enjun inquired with a gleam in his eyes.

“The eunuch in the woods,” Wen Zhuo continued.

“Again?” Enjun said in surprise. “Did you get a chance to talk to him? Wait let me guess. By the looks of it, you still haven’t gotten any information, have you?”

“How could I?” Wen Zhuo said sarcastically, as he took a sip of the wine. “My mother was with me. We were in the garden looking at the flowers, and then I saw the eunuch among the servants. And amazingly, he seems to be doing quite well, despite his previous injuries.”

“Argh…” Enjun said out loud, shaking his head. “I have to know Wen Zhuo. I know what I saw that day. I just need confirmation.”

“Would you just let it go?” Wen Zhuo laughed at his friend’s undying thirst for reaffirmation. “Besides, it is better if we just drop the subject instead of poking and prodding at this incident.”

“I know, but I just want to prove to myself,” Enjun said, standing up and going over to look out at the pond.

“Alright,” Wen Zhuo gave in, walking over to stand next to Enjun. “But we have to make sure the emperor does not know about it.”

Enjun’s eyes lighted up like fireworks. “Deal! But how are we supposed to get this information. Remember last time when he said he did not remember. He might be reluctant to tell us.”

“I realized that, but I will find a way,” Wen Zhuo promised.

“Let’s wait and see,” Enjun laughed wholeheartedly and punched Wen Zhuo in the shoulders. “Do you want to bet on it?”

“Why not?” Wen Zhuo said coolly. “I am always up for a good challenge.”

By now it was already eight o’clock, and the sun is shining brightly. Wing Yi wakes up well rested and full of energy. She actually woke up before Gai Gong Gong and so decided that she would set up breakfast today. It took her no time at all to find the kitchen, since Ceuk and Gai Gong Gong had taken her there on several occasions. Luckily, she found Ceuk busy cooking in the kitchen. He was happy to see her and showed her where to find the food trays. When Wing Yi returned, Gai Gong Gong was still sleeping when he answered the door.

“Wing Yi?” Gai Gong Gong said yawning.

“Gai Gong Gong, I’ve got us some food,” Wing Yi said with a bright smile and a tray full of food.

“Here, let me help you,” Gai Gong Gong said, taking the tray.

“It is good to see you getting acquainted with the location of places but you should try not to wander in the palace. There are lots of places here that you is restricted and I also don’t want you getting lost.” Gai Gong Gong instructed.

“Yes, Gai Gong Gong,” Wing Yi nodded obligingly.

They began eating the steaming porridge when a knock is heard.

“Who can that be so early in the morning?” Gai Gong Gong said to himself as he walks to the door.

“Tao Gong Gong?” Gai Gong Gong gasped as he saw the plump figure standing in front of the door.

Hey BondyLove!

First off, sorry to you guys for not updating this weekend. I will definitely try my hardest to update this coming weekend with at least 2 chapters to make up for time lost. Hopefully then your many questions will be answered. Well as for Enjun, he wants to prove that he was right(kind of self-righteous) and besides life in the palace is quite boring...so this gives him something to occupy his time, right? Hopefully that's convincing enough. Thanx!

Hey guys!
Ch. 47 is up. Enjoy! Hopefully I can update again tomorrow.

************************
The Devil

“Good Morning Gai Gong Gong,” Tao Gong Gong greeted with a sly smile, peering into the room.
“Well, good morning to you as well,” Gai Gong Gong quickly retorted sarcastically, giving Tao Gong Gong a curious eye. “What can I do for you today?”

“Actually, I was here to see him,” Tao Gong Gong said with a high pitch tone as his index finger pointed directly at Wing Yi. “Mind if I come in?” He said as he sauntered purposefully in, uninvited.

Wing Yi looked over at Gai Gong Gong only to see his worried face. She knew that just the sight of Tao Gong Gong spelled impending trouble.

Gai Gong Gong tried to be hospitable and invite him for a cup of tea.

“That won’t be necessary,” Tao Gong Gong stopped him midway, and his stare fixated on Wing Yi. “I have
important matters to attend to, and so I must be brief.”

He quickly made himself comfortable by tossing over his front dress before taking a seat on the stool. He then pulled out his fan and began to slowly fan himself.

Gai Gong Gong took a seat beside Wing Yi.

Wing Yi was curious as to what he had planned for her.

“As I was saying,” Tao Gong Gong commenced, still fanning. “Oh yes…what exactly does he do around here?”

“What do you mean?” Gai Gong Gong interjected, staring at him eye to eye. “Tieu Wing Tu helps me with my with various tasks. He is new here, and so I am training him.”

“Hump…” Tao Gong Gong snorted. “Don’t worry Gai Gong Gong, I will make it my personal duty to take him off your hands.”

Gai Gong Gong eyed him sharply but managed to let him proceed.

“Your Tieu Wing Tu is quite lucky. Our prince Xie is in need of a servant.” Tao Gong Gong said mockingly, turning his attention to Wing Yi. “And age wise, Tieu Wing Tu would make a perfect servant wouldn't you agree, Gai Gong Gong?”

“But he doesn’t know all the rules and regulations in the palace yet and besides…” Gai Gong Gong said sternly but was cut short by Tao Gong Gong.

“Well the decision is final,” he remarked, closed his fan swiftly and smashed it on the table.

The loud smash made Wing Yi jumped and seeing her reaction, he laughed.

“Oh, no need to worry,” Tao Gong Gong suggested, fringing a fake smile. “I’ll take good care of him for you, Gai Gong Gong. I bet he will learn quickly enough. Besides serving prince Xie is an honor in itself.”

“But I don’t want to serve that jerk!” Wing Yi blurted out, standing up out of her stool.

“Infidel, how dare you utter such words!” Tao Gong Gong implored, his face turning red like a cherry.

“I am sorry,” Gai Gong Gong abruptly said in her defense. “He is new to this. Please don’t hold him in contempt.”

“He should be glad that he has me or else…” Tao Gong Gong purposely lets the words linger on the tip of his tongue.

Knowing that Gai Gong Gong wanted to help but has no other alternatives, Wing Yi stood up and walked towards the door.

“I am ready,” she said calmly, her eyes fixated on the door.

“But…” Gai Gong Gong tried to say as he stood up quickly.

Yet again Tao Gong Gong cuts him off. “Very well. The prince is still sleeping, and you have a lot to get done before he wakes up.”

“Good bye,” Wing Yi said softly as she walked out.

Tao Gong Gong, exhilarated over his victory, smiled from ear to ear and said mockingly, “Don’t worry, I’ll have him back for dinner.”

With that much said, he walked off with Wing Yi. Gai Gong Gong stood helplessly at the doorway, unsure as how to proceed.

Wing Yi quickly realized that Tao Gong Gong was lying because when they reached Xie’s room, she could already hear dishes being smashed and chairs falling over. She knew that her job was not to fix food for him but be his muse.

He…was wide-awake.

Tao Gong Gong knocked on the door and a maid opened the door.

“You are relieved of your duties here,” Tao Gong Gong simply told her with a quick wave of the hand. She was shaking from head to foot as she stumbled out, fear and anguish in her big round eyes.

“The devil is up to no good,” Wing Yi thought to herself as Tao Gong Gong lead the way in.

“There you are!” a child-voice said as they came in. “Did you bring him?”

“Here he is, my prince,” Tao Gong Gong bowed and then moved over to the right to reveal Wing Yi.

“We meet again,” Xie said in a menacing tone, walking over with an apple.

He laughed and said, “Good job Tao Gong Gong. You are excused.”

Tao Gong Gong immediately left, but not before giving Wing Yi a quick glare.

“So where were we?” Xie said, pacing slowly around Wing Yi and tossing his apple up and down in the process.

Wing Yi remained quiet and still, her eyes staring into the distance. She knew exactly what he meant. Just the thought of the worms made her hair stand on back.
After a minute of his torturous pacing, Wing Yi spoke up.

“What do you want?” Wing Yi spoke out bravely. “Was it you who brought me here?”

“Of course!” he replied with a giggle. “I just needed a…friend.”

Wing Yi lets out a sarcastic snort as she shakes her head. “I bet.”

“You know what?” he said standing in front of her. “You’re the only here who is not afraid of me.”

“People are actually afraid of you?” Wing Yi said mockingly. “What a small world.”

“You know it gets tiring and quite boring just simply knocking over vases and chairs,” Xie said with a devilish smiled. “That maid you just saw running out…she was no match.”

“So that’s why I am here,” Wing Yi said with a sardonic smile. “No one is left for you to torture.”

“So clever,” he said, tossing the apple at a vase. Upon contact, the vase smashed on the ground into a million pieces.

Wing Yi glared at him.

“And this time, my brother and Wen Zhuo won’t be here to bail you out,” Xie concluded. “No one can.”

After saying their names, Xie all of a sudden realizes something. “Oh man! I almost forgot that Wen Zhuo had promised to teach Enjun and me martial arts today in the courtyard.”

“Oh god,” Wing Yi thought to herself. “How worst is it to have the devil practice his skills on her.”

“Let’s go,” he demanded as he made his way out the door with the more than reluctant Wing Yi following from behind

Oh no, I hope Xie is not a bad guy and Wing Yi will not get torture by him. With Wing Yi's personality, I doubt anyone can hurt her. Update soon.
