The Powerful Punch
“No, No,” Wen Zhuo instructed after watching Enjun. “Your left hand goes in front first, and then your right leg.”
“Okay, okay, okay,” Enjun said listlessly, standing back into his position and starting again.
“That’s better!” Wen Zhuo commented, laughing at his friend’s sad attempt. “Keep practicing.”
Enjun let out a long sigh, wiped his brows, and proceeded.
“Brother Enjun! I am here!” came a voice.
Enjun continued his practice, knowing exactly who was calling him.
Wen Zhuo turned around to greet the little
prince. “Prince Xie, I see you finally decided to show up for your practice.”
After speaking, he was aghast to see the person trailing behind Xie. As Enjun kept on practicing, Wen Zhuo goes over to him.
“I think you should see this,” Wen Zhuo whispered to his friend.
Xie was standing impatiently, wanting to get hold of a sword. “What are you going to teach me today Wen Zhuo, sword fighting?”
Enjun, after hearing what Wen Zhuo had just said, stopped dead in his tracks. He slowly turned around to face Wing Yi. The shear expression on his face matched Wen Zhuo.
After gathering his composure, Enjun walks over to get a closer look and began his interrogation.
“So, who’s your little friend Xie?” Enjun asked, eyes fixated on Wing Yi. He could not believe how good a condition the eunuch was in considering all that bruise he had sustained a few days earlier.
“Oh, him?” he responded with a mischievous smile. “He’s my new servant.”
“Oh, I see,” Enjun remarked as he turns to look at Wen Zhuo and then quickly back at Wing Yi. “What’s your name?”
Wing Yi was hesitant but knew fully well Enjun’s status. So reluctantly she spoke up, “My name is Tieu Wing Tu, sir.”
“Well, I am prince Enjun and this is my cousin and friend Wen Zhuo,” Enjun quickly introduced.
Wing Yi was curious as to why the two were staring at her with such puzzlement. At the same time, Enjun was trying to remember if it was the same person in the forest.
“He looks somewhat like the person in the forest,” he pondered inwardly. “I guess it was the dirt that probably makes him seem a little different. He seems not to have remember either of us.”
Because of this, there was a moment of awkward silence. Luckily, Xie broke it just in the nick of time.
“So are we actually going to do some fighting or stand here and look at each other,” he demanded impatiently.
Wen Zhuo followed up his remark with, “Okay, let’s start.”
Enjun, taking the initiative, jumped in, “Tieu Wing Tu will be my partner!”
He wanted any opportunity to get the story from her. He wanted to win the bet, badly.
“Alright, Xie, you will work with me today,” Wen Zhuo continued, giving Enjun an exasperated look.
“But I don’t know any martial arts,” Wing Yi admitted bluntly.
“Oh, that won’t be a problem,” Wen Zhuo reassured her. “This is their first lesson too so consider this Martial Arts 101. Today I am only teaching the very basics in hand and eye coordination.”
“Yeah, don’t worry, if I can learn it then anyone can,” Enjun joked.
“He’s right,” Wen Zhuo said in earnest. “We’ll take it one step at a time.”
Wing Yi nodded reluctantly.
“So much for my healing process,” she thought.
“Alright,” Wen Zhuo shouted, “Stand up straight with your hands at your sides.”
They all stood facing the South end with Wing Yi standing on the outside, followed by Enjun, and then next to him Xie.
“Make a fist with both hands and place them at your waist,” Wen Zhuo instructed, facing them. “Now punch with your right arm and pull it back into the initial position, and then do the same for the left arm. Continue alternating between the two until you can make the transition smoothly.”
In no time, Wing Yi caught on and was outdoing the other two.
Both Enjun and Wen Zhuo were amazed. She seemed perfectly healthy and no hint of injuries.
Xie was quickly getting bored of this monotonous routine.
“Now pair up with your partners and perform the same routine. One person will punch and the other will block. Remember to stay aware at all times. We don’t want anyone getting knocked out.”
Wing Yi was actually enjoying this time. Xie is preoccupied and is less likely to torture her with people around.
“Don’t punch so hard,” Wen Zhuo whispered to Enjun, as he walked over to help them get into position.
Enjun nodded. “I know.”
To Enjun’s surprise, Wing Yi punched harder than him.
“Sorry, did I punch too hard?” she apologized, knowing that he was in fact a prince.
“Uh…that’s okay,” Enjun replied with a fringe smile, trying to be manly.
As they are sparing, Enjun decided to ask more questions.
“Um…I haven’t see you around here before,” he said between blocks.
“Well, I am new here, sir” Wing Yi responded between punches.
“How long have you been here?” he continued, dodging one of Wing Yi’s punches because he forgot to block.
“Not yet a week sir,” she answered.
From over on the other corner, Wen Zhuo could see that Enjun had begun his interrogation. Xie was the puncher for the entire time, since he was too hyper to be the blocker. While blocking constantly, Wen Zhuo would be curious and occasionally look over to make out what Enjun was saying. It seems like Enjun was doing more talking than blocking.
“Enjun, stay focus,” Wen Zhuo warned him.
All he got in response was one of Enjun’s silly nods.
“Whom do you work under?” Enjun persisted, unrelenting.
“Gai Gong Gong,” Wing Yi promptly answered, accompanied by another swing.
“Hmm…” he pondered out loud.
“Look out!” Wing Yi screamed as her left arm was heading for his nose. She couldn’t stop herself because the momentum had taken her arm into a full swing.
He wasn’t paying attention and once in got his arm up to block, it was too late. Her left fist collided with his nose.

The Sleeping Patient
The punch sent him flying. Blood gushed out of his nose as he fell to the ground. Wen Zhuo rushed over to see his cousin. Wing Yi has holding Enjun as Wen Zhuo tried to stop the bleeding. Throughout the whole ordeal, Enjun was conscious but definitely in pain. He did not scream but only wince at the pain.
“I am so sorry,” Wing Yi kept saying over and over again.
“Don’t worry, it is not your fault,” Wen Zhuo assured her, with a worried look.
Both of them knew what the consequences were for injuring the prince.
“Xie go get some bandages,” Wen Zhuo ordered like a doctor.
Oddly enough, Xie did exactly as he was told and was prompt.
Enjun was instructed to slight pinch the bandage cloth over his nose.
“Let’s take him back to his room,” Wen Zhuo suggested.
With a joint effort, Wing Yi and Wen Zhuo managed to transport Enjun. Xie was there to open the door.
“Slowly now,” Wen Zhuo said, helping Wing Yi place Enjun on the pillow. “Xie, I need for you to run and fetch me some more bandage cloths. Make sure no one sees you.”
By now Wing Yi took over the job of holding on to the bandage cloth.
“Please be okay,” she spoke softly, as Enjun closes his eyes.
Once Xie came back with the bandage cloths, Wen Zhuo changed bandages and asked, “Enjun, do you think your nose is broken?”
“How should I know?” Enjun said with a nasal sound. “All I know is it hurts like heck.”
“Okay, does this hurt?” Wen Zhuo asked, touching Enjun’s nose. Enjun winced but luckily didn’t cry out. “That’s good. It means that your nose isn’t broken. A few blood vessels were busted, but that means you will heal soon.”
“How soon?” Enjun immediately wanted to know.
“A few days probably,” Wen Zhuo said with joy.
“But how can I not let people see it?” Enjun cried out, dejected. “For all those days?”
Wing Yi spoke up, “Just tell them what really happened. It is my fault what happened to you.”
“You must be crazier than me!” Enjun said, almost forgetting his nose. “Besides I wasn’t paying attention.”
“Enjun is right,” Wen Zhuo joined in with a smile. “If anyone finds out, I won’t be able to teach Enjun and Xie martial arts anymore.”
“No more martial arts?” Xie said in shock. “NO WAY!”
Everyone looked perplexed and finally Xie spoke up, “We could say that while you were teaching Enjun and me, I accidentally swung at him.”
Wing Yi couldn’t believe her ears. Here is the devil helping her out?!
“I can’t let you take the blame,” she concluded. “I don’t…”
Wen Zhuo cut her off to say, “Xie’s idea might work after all. You’re just a servant. If they were to find out that you caused the prince harm, your punishment is surely death. On the other hand, if the prince’s brother happens by chance to injure him, the punishment is less severe. Besides, accidents happen and the emperor will be too preoccupied these several weeks to notice.”
“But he will still be punished for what I did!” Wing Yi said in disbelief.
“No worries, father adores me. He would just probably scold me and ground me for a month. Nothing I can’t handle.” Xie said confidently.
“Alright, that settles it. If anyone asks, that’s what we will say,” Wen Zhuo smiled, relieved. “How do you feel about it Enjun?”
He looked down to see Enjun sleeping soundly.
“Okay, just let him sleep it off for a while,” Wen Zhuo decided. “We should get back before someone sees us.”
“No, I think someone should stay with him just to make sure he is okay,” Wing Yi suggested, looking worriedly at the sleeping Enjun.
“Then I’ll get a maid for him,” Wen Zhuo offered with a confused look.
Wing Yi sighed and turned her attention to Wen Zhuo.
“I should stay until he wakes up,” she concluded with a guilty conscience.
“I guess that would be the logical approach,” Wen Zhuo said, scratching his head.
“Yeah,” Xie spoke up, getting agitated. “Can we go now? I am hungry.”
“Alright, Xie and I will go now,” Wen Zhuo said with a long drawn sigh. “We will be back after we get some lunch. What do you want to eat?”
“Um…a steamed bun,” Wing Yi uttered, a bit shock that she, the servant is being served. “Thanks.”
“Okay, we will be back in an hour,” Wen Zhuo said as he walked out the door with Xie.
Wing Yi walked to the door to escort them out.
“Do you think he will be okay?” she asked Wen Zhuo once more.
“Yeah, he’ll be fine,” he reassured her. “Don’t feel so bad. It was just an accident.”
Wing Yi nodded slowly and closed the door. She carefully walked over to the bedpost, making an effort not to disturb the sleeping patient. He was in the exact position as they had left them.
“I can’t believe I punched the prince,” Wing Yi said to herself. “Stupid, stupid. I just can’t stay out of trouble! And Gai Gong Gong…”
Her train of thought trailed off when Enjun shifted in his bed. In the process, his bed covers slipped off.
Instinctively she went over to pull up the covers before seating herself on the round, carved mahongy table. She propped her head on her left arm in his direction. The sight of him sleeping brought back memories of Siu Chun. She remembered the time when Siu Chun caught the flu and was sick for a week. He could barely leave his room for half the week, and she would help Li MaMa bring up his medicine very four hours. A tear drop lingered in her eyes as she looks at Enjun, sleeping soundly.

Cold Dumplings
After forty minutes, Enjun slowly awoke, rubbing his eyes. He had totally forgotten about his injured nose. Not until his right hand made contact with his nose, did Enjun immediately felt the surging pain. He lets out a quick yelp, a mixture of pain and agony.
Wing Yi, who had dozed off while watching him sleep, was rudely awaken. She bolted out of her wooden stool and almost fell with it. Only after regaining her composure, did Wing Yi realized where she was.
“Prince Enjun,” she asked, quickly turning her attention to him. “Are you alright?”
Enjun, sitting fully upright on his bed, nodded while trying to take in air and ease the pain.
Wing Yi, seeing his situation, immediately rushed over.
“Do I need to get someone in here to see you?” she asked nervously, looking at his bruised nose.
“No, No,” Enjun said through his nose. “That won’t be necessary. I just accidently touch my nose.”
He looks around and then back at Wing Yi.
“Where’s the other two?” he asked with a confused look.
“They both went to get some lunch,” she responded promptly.
“Hmm…” Enjun said out loud and then looked at Wing Yi. “Then why aren’t you with them?”
Then he remembered his little predicament.
“Oh, I see,” he said with a long sigh.
With just the mentioning of food, Enjun’s stomach growled. Wing Yi heard the growl too but tried not to smile.
Luckily for him, there came a knock at the door.
“It is Wen Zhuo,” a voice from the outside said.
Wing Yi went to open the door for Wen Zhuo. Just as she opened the door, the smell of the food in his hands pervaded the entire room. Even Wing Yi’s mouth was beginning to water.
“Give me a hand with these,” Wen Zhuo said, passing over some of the load to Wing Yi. “Xie is finishing his lunch in his quarters, so I have to carry all these dishes by myself.”
Enjun was sitting on the bed, mouth drooling uncontrollably.
“Good, more food for me,” Enjun said jokingly. “And some quiet time.”
After setting the food entres down, Wing Yi suddenly remembered that she could not stay, and besides she was only a servant. She knows enough that servants were not allowed to eat alongside their masters. Wing Yi was also afraid that if she stayed any longer, Enjun was bound to interrogate her some more.
“What is he getting at?” Wing Yi thought to herself. “Does he know that I am a girl? No! He couldn’t possibly. Could he?”
With that in mind, Wing Yi helps to escort Enjun over before excusing herself from the room.
“I am afraid I need to excuse myself. Gai Gong Gong asked that I return by noon,” Wing Yi proclaimed, eyes involuntarily locked onto the food. “I have some errands to run before then, and it looks like I am already late.”
“But…” Enjun tried to stall time, but was interrupted by Wen Zhuo.
“Alright, since I am here, I can look after Enjun,” he offered, relieving Wing Yi of her duty.
“Thank you,” she said with a grateful and relieved smile as she makes her way to the door.
“Wait!” Wen Zhuo called her back.
Wing Yi almost jumped at the calling, before turning around and walking back to the table.
“Yes, sir,” she said, with a hint of uncertainty in her voice.
Wen Zhuo held out his hand, and in it was a dumpling.
“Well this was steamed at one point in time, but I guess cold dumpling is still as good as steamed dumpling,” he remarked with a laugh. “Take it.”
Enjun smiled with a mouthful of food crammed in it.
Poor Wing Yi was relieved, as she thanked him, took the dumpling, and hurried out the door.
Once in the corridor, she lets out a sigh of relief and
looks down at the dumpling. While walking in the corridor, she begins to nibble at it. Only after she had finished the dumpling, did she realized that she did not know how to get back to her quarter nor Enjun’s quarter, from which she had just come from. Wing Yi looks around, disoriented and confused.
“I hate corridors!” she quietly cursed to herself, eyes widen with perpetual fear. “Who was she kidding? This is after all, the palace.”
Now that she actually examining her position, every place looks the same---doors, doors, and more doors. Even though it was the daytime, Wing Yi could still not distinguish any certain location. She would walk around and end up in the same place that she had started out.
“Okay, calm down,” Wing Yi reassured herself. “I have already gone in the east and south wing. So…it must be either the north or west, but which one now?”
By random selection, she chose the north wing. Walking timidely around the corner, Wing Yi thought she saw a figure pass by.
“That could be one of the other servants,” she concluded, as she continues to walk in their general direction.
Wing Yi quickened her pace as she tried to catch up with the person.
“Gosh,” she said, out of breath. “Sure walks fast…actually not walking more like sprinting.”
As she turns a corner, she was able to get a quick glimpse of the figure that was dressed oddly, meaning not servant nor royality. But the thing that stands out the most was his left pierced ear. While Wing Yi stood there thinking, the figure had already disappeared, leaving Wing Yi back to square one.
