    Hey Quantum!
haha...you hang around at the Winglin forum too? Awesome! Yeah, what a great coincidence! Thanks, yep, the poster is the longest one I've done so far. Yes, the infamous Gia appears oncemore. Expect to see more of her soon. haha...will Wing Yi survive? We will both have to wait and see. Thanks for always commenting!

Another quick poster, Anita in boy's attire. Photos from 36th chamber of southern shaolin.

    ***************
    The Crowd

The three of them had hastily shuffled onto the busy street, which placed them a good distance from the brothel. Reaching the safety of being amongst the crowd, the three let out a quick breath of relief.

“How long have we been gone?” Enjun finally asked, as he squint his eyes under the sun’s glare. Prompt to notice his uncomfortable condition, Wing Yi raised her hand to help shield the sun. Enjun smiled as he gently returned her hand to its normal position. “It is okay,” he answered her puzzled gaze. “Now tell me Wing Yi, how long has it been?” Enjun insisted.

“Maybe an hour or two,” Wing Yi answered directly.

“I cannot believe that we have been gone for that long,” Wen Zhuo said, looking worried. “I just hope the counselor will not notice.”

Enjun shook his head, as he cheerily commented, “We will just say that we went for a morning stroll through the marketplace. Simple as that.”

“So when are we going to purchase some supplies for the trip?” Wen Zhuo asked, a little unsure. “We must have all that done today.”

“We will just take another stroll around noontime. And if we still need more time, we could always take yet another stroll in the afternoon. There will be ample time.”

“Yes, I guess you are right.”

“Well, of course! Aren’t I always?” Enjun said proudly, nudging Wing Yi for confirmation. She nodded with a suppressed smile.

“Yes, Master Enjun knows all, sees all,” Wen Zhuo teased good-humoredly. All three laughed whole-heartedly before a thunderous voice broke through. Just up ahead, a crowd was already forming in front of a small shop. It appears that the all clamor came from that very location. Before either Wen Zhuo or Wing Yi had the chance to stop him, Enjun speedily made his way over to join the gathering crowd, eager for a view. A distinct voice was becoming more audible as the three approached.

“Give me the money!” a man’s guttural voice yelled out.

After some squeezing in, the three were within viewing distance. Faces were not distinguishable but figures can be seen moving about. Wing Yi noticed a woman figure holding some sort of basket standing only a few feet away from the outraged man who was flagrantly waving his arms in the air.

“Pay now,” the man continued, approaching the woman.

“I do not know what you are talking about,” the woman answered in a soft voice, while looking down at the bracelet with a confused expression. “I have already paid you five hundred taels for this jade bracelet.”

“I can barely hear her,” Enjun said in frustration as he edged on to get a better view. “Let us move up closer.” The three managed to move up to the third row where the quarrel was clearly audible.

“Do you believe her, this mindless woman?” the storeowner asked rhetorically, appealing to the crowd. “I just helped her put the bracelet on a few moment ago, and then she decided to leave without paying me!” There was muttering amongst the crowd as they looked on in interest. Then the man continued his accusations, “Did you think you could just walk off?! You’re not leaving without paying. Either take the bracelet off or pay!”

The woman winced at the loudness of his voice, but her face retained the dazed expression. “I had already paid for the bracelet,” she insisted in her soft tone.

Enjun, Wen Zhuo, and Wing Yi anxiously watched on. They, like the crowd, did not yet know who to believe, the outraged man or the docile woman.

Someone shouted from the crowd, “She does not look like someone who would steal.”

“Oh, really?” the overweight storeowner contested, staring into the crowd. “Just because she dresses well, she therefore cannot be guilty of stealing? Ha!” Once again, a wave of mutterings rose in the crowd.

“It is up to the court to decide her innocence or guilt,” a person next to them shouted.

“The court? There’s no need, I think this can be resolved here and now.” With that said, the man suddenly made a grab for the woman’s wrist, forcefully tugging the jade bracelet off her fragile hand. The woman squeezed her eyes shut while crying out from the pain.

“STOP!!!” another voice from the crowd yelled out. Numerous heads turned towards Wing Yi’s direction. Before they realized what happened, Wen Zhuo and Enjun saw Wing Yi walk swiftly towards the woman. The storeowner still had his hand around the woman’s tiny wrist, waiting for the person to emerge from out of the masses.

“Looks like we have no choice but to get involved now,” Wen Zhuo said with an apprehensive smile as both he and Enjun followed Wing Yi’s trail.

“Release her hand,” Wing Yi demanded in a calm but stern voice, as she stood facing the storeowner. “Even if she was guilty of stealing, you have no right to inflict such pain upon her.”

The man peered up and down, sizing her up with a smirk. “Who are you to make such demands? Besides, I don’t see how this is any of your business.”

His unwillingness to comply forced Wing Yi to act before he could do any further damage. “Okay, you asked for it,” she said under her breath as she threw her right hand in the middle and with a quick thrust upwards, managed to disengage the storeowner’s firm grip without him even realizing what had transpired in that split second. The woman grimaced in silent as she held her bruised hand close to her chest.

“Are you alright?” Wing Yi asked softly, turning towards the woman to examine her red hands. With eyes like that of a frightened animal, the woman looked at her savior but with a grateful smile on her fair complexion. This overt act of heroism brought on claps of approval from the masses. Embarrassed and incensed at the crowd’s reaction, the storeowner was prepared to put up a fight to carry out a convincing act and to retain some of his manly pride. As he was about to deliver a blow behind Wing Yi’s back, Wen Zhuo’s muscular arms reached up and blocked it in midair. Enjun and the crowd cheered wildly. “Take him out!” the crowd chanted. Everyone was anticipating for a fight to break loose. Suddenly, someone yelled out, “The authorities are coming!” The guards appeared from around the corner, rushing to get to the scene. Within a few seconds, the crowd hastily dispersed in all directions like a wild stampede of bulls. Knowing that his plan had gone sour, the storeowner scrambled to get back to his store to reseal all the doors.

“We must not get caught in the midst of this,” Wen Zhuo advised as he saw the guards approaching. “Let’s go!” He grabbed onto both Wing Yi and Enjun’s arms and pulled them along. Wing Yi in turn quickly grabbed the woman’s other hand as they all ran to get away. They ran down several alleys before they could lose the guards.

“Have we lost them?” Enjun asked, panting breathlessly as he leaned on the cement wall.

Peering down the alley, Wen Zhuo confirmed, “Yes, I think we did.”

With a smile of relief, Wing Yi helped the woman take a seat on an overturned stack of straw baskets.

“Can you imagine the trouble we would have been in had they caught us?” Enjun remarked, feeling a sense of thrill and excitement in the strong rhythm of his heart.

“Luckily we did not,” Wen Zhuo said with a sigh of relief and then focused his attention on the woman. “How is she doing Wing Yi?”

“I think will be fine,” she answered with a hopeful smile. “I can’t say the same for Master Enjun though. He is breathing even harder than she.”

The three gathered around the woman. “Thank you for all your help,” the woman finally spoke.

Suddenly Wing Yi recognized her as being the generous woman who had given her the moon cakes at the Moon Festival. “Are you the one that gave me the lotus filling moon cakes?” Wing Yi asked the woman. The woman looked a puzzled as she shooked her head.

“I am sorry, we have yet to introduce ourselves,” Wing Yi said. “My name is Wing Yi. These are my masters Enjun and Wen Zhuo.”

“What is your name Miss?” Enjun inquired politely.

Raising her eyes up to meet the friendly faces, the woman said meekly, “My name is Ming Li.”

Trying to make conversation, Enjun joked, “You are not by chance related to Official Yen Li, are you?”

“You know my husband?” the woman asked shyly.

“Your husband?” the three asked simultaneously.

Perplexed by their interest and bewildered looks, she was hesitant to answer, “Yes, I am Lady Li, his wife.”

Hey!! SOrry didnt reply so soon. Had too many homeworks to do. What a torture

Nice work...i could make a lot of conclusions in this piece though there are too many loop holes and missing pieces too make out the "plot"

That stupid storeowner!!! Accusing Mdm Ming Li like that. I'll kick his butt if i see him.

Someone so kind like her doesn't deserve to be trated that way. I don't hink Official Yen Li deservers Mdm Ming Li as his wife. He and his counsellor plots something that the trio couldnt find out yet Mdm Ming li is such a sweet and as i said, kind lady.

Wonder if Mdm Ming Li is also in the plot with her husband......well that's a twist enough to make me perplex

Be waiting for the next update

    Hey Quantum!

Don't worry about it, I know what a torture school can be. hehe... Well, let's hope that the homework load will lessen soon. Yes, you're right, I will need to fix the many loopholes in the next several chapters. I have been having some hard time with the storyline, but I am hoping it will turn out okay. Thank you for letting me know, I really appreciate it. haha...yeah, the storeowner is a really piece of work, taking advantage of her situation. Your reasoning about Lady Li is very good. Even I don't yet if I plan to make her evil or good. Thanks for always leaving a comment, I really enjoy reading it. Well, hope to hear from you soon and good luck to you with your schoolwork!

    Setting the Stage

The three friends’ mouths hung open as they stared at the woman with apprehensive looks.

“I better be on my way,” the woman declared with a benign smile, slowly standing up from her seated position. “Thank you again for all your help.”

“Of course,” Wing Yi agreed, before offering to help lead Lady Li out of the alley with an extended hand. “I will escort you to the street.” With a quick glance at her two masters, Wing Yi said, “I’ll be right back.” They, in return, nodded but remained speechless. From afar, the two guys watched Wing Yi and the woman. It appears that Wing Yi was making some sort of conversation with her.

“So?” Enjun inquired, turning to Wen Zhuo. “Do you believe her?”

“It is hard to believe that she is indeed Lady Li,” Wen Zhuo said with a shrug of disbelief. “For one thing, if she really was the official’s wife, why did no one recognize her? I find that very strange. Secondly, their treatment of her is like that of a beggar woman or sort. It only makes sense that the people such as the jewelry storeowner must display some level of respect for the wife of an official. Apparently what we had witnessed disproves this logic.”

“But she is no beggar,” Enjun pointed out. “From her physical appearance, she seems to be from an affluent society and definitely not that of a middle or low class. However, did you get the feeling that she was not in the right mind?”

    “That might be the case.”

“Well unfortunately, it would explain why he has to look elsewhere for love.”

“I’m back,” Wing Yi cheerily announced as she walked towards them. “Did I miss anything?”

“No much,” Enjun teased. “I bet the two of us did though.”

“Oh,” she realized with a smile. “You mean my conversation with Lady Li?”

    “Precisely.”

“Alright, I will tell you on the way back to the court,” Wing Yi suggested, dusting Enjun’s shoulder from the cement debris cause by his leaning on it earlier.

“Well, we just talked about random things. I asked her if she had any children, and she told me no but that she loved children. I guess that is why she loved to purchase cakes for the little children in the streets. So then I tried asking her again about those lotus moon cakes, but she still couldn’t remember. She then asked me how old I was, and where I came from. I told her I was seventeen and that I originally lived here but just came back for an extended visit with my masters. And you know what?”

“What?” Enjun and Wen Zhuo echoed in unison.

“She even commented me on how she thought that I was the nicest gentleman she has ever met.”

Both Enjun and Wen Zhuo sighed, disappointed by wasted anticipation.

“Here, I thought it would be something juicy,” Enjun commented with a dejected look.

“Oh, so you want something juicy?” she reiterated with a suppressed smile. “Why didn’t you say so? Okay, I won’t keep you two in suspense any longer. I did ask her about her husband and how he was doing. She told me that he was in perfect health but lately he has been staying home during the day instead of reporting to the court and then leaving after the sun goes down.”

“It is confirmed then,” Enjun said, looking over a Wen Zhuo. “He is not ill.”

“Even though she seems very nice, I don’t know if she is what she claims to be,” Wing Yi remarked with a doubtful look.

“Well, we were just discussing that very prospect while you were gone,” Wen Zhuo said. “Regardless, we must still continue as planned. Hopefully this whole cloud of suspicion will be lifted and some truth will emerge.”

“I agree,” Enjun spoke up with reassuring smile.

“I hope she is lying,” Wing Yi said softly, mostly to herself.

Enjun heard her utterance and inquired, “You do?”

“Having a rich, high status husband who neglects and cheats offers no happiness. Maybe the truth is not always a good thing.”

With that thought in mind, the three remained relatively silent as they made their way back to the court and to show their attendance. Being an elegant speaker, Enjun got them through the counselor’s interrogation and even made an excuse to go out again in the afternoon. Making up for lost time, the three quickly made the purchases and loaded them securely to the cart.

“Good afternoon gentlemen,” the counselor announced his presence as he ambled over to them from the other side of the street.

“Well, good afternoon counselor,” Enjun said with a grin, turning around. “Out for a leisurely afternoon stroll?”

Peering questionably at the three, the counselor casually replied while fanning himself. “Yes, it seems like a lovely day for a stroll down the market. It is a good opportunity to be out and about, especially for the elderly such as myself, to stretch some leg muscles. Well, you all seem rather busy.”

Yes, we are purchasing some more supplies for another trip back to Wen Xian. I am busy because I want to make sure that these two are prepared for tomorrow morning’s departure.”

A slight pause and then, “So you will not be accompanying them on the trip?”

“No,” Enjun said briskly. “They will travel faster without me, and besides, I want to take the opportunity to rest and to just relax.”

“How long will they be gone?”

“Oh, I think three days should be sufficient.”

“Yes, that would probably be best,” the counselor agreed and then handed Enjun fifty taels. “A little contribution.”

Without any hesitation, Enjun quickly took it and smiled, “Thank you on behalf of the people of Wen Xian.”

Peering up into the sky, he announced. “Well, it is time for me to head back to the court. I will leave you to finish your preparation. Farewell.”

“Goodbye counselor,” Enjun politely responded as he watched the old man walk away. When he was sure that the man was gone, Enjun turned towards his two friends and beamed.

“So…we have set the stage,” Wen Zhuo said.

“And the show is about to begin,” Enjun concluded, enthralled with excitement.

    Abandoned Dreams

In the morning, everything went as planned, Wen Zhuo and Wing Yi bided Enjun goodbye before mounting their horses. Standing next to Enjun was the sleepy Tao Gong Gong and on the other side was the always, alert counselor.

“I hope to hear good news upon your return,” Enjun said with a twinkle in his eyes.

Once the horses and cargo disappeared around the corner, Enjun, the counselor, and Tao Gong Gong ambled back inside the court and headed back to their respect quarters for it was only five in the morning.

On the way in, the counselor inquired of Enjun in a conversational tone, “It will be lonely for you here without your friends, Master Enjun. I’m afraid our mundane little town has no entertainment to offer you.”

Walking casually with his hands folded behind his back, Enjun replied with a smile, “Counselor, you are being too modest. This town is very charming. I am sure that I can find something to entertain myself with. Besides, I do enjoy the peaceful atmosphere that this place has to offer. I will take advantage of these three days to scour through all the markets and stores, for I want to purchase some souvenirs to take back with me.”

“Yes,” the old man replied, looking towards the sky. “You seem to have it all well planned. However, if you do need anything, please do no hesitate to ask. Official Yen Li will has entrusted me to keep you happy and satisfied during your stay.”

“It is too kind of him to be thinking of me when he, himself is not well. I earnestly hope he will get better soon.”

“Yes sir, I will definitely inform him of your well wishes.”

“Thank you. It is just that I feel very regretful for not getting a chance to thank my host and hostess in person.”

The mention of hostess startled the counselor but he was quick to recover, “I am sure you all will have a proper introduction once the official gets well. As of right now, Lady Li is devotedly attending to his needs.”

    “I can understand,” Enjun agreed.

“Well, you should try and get a little more rest in,” the counselor advised with a fake smile of cordiality. “I will have the servants bring your breakfast in whenever you have awaken.”

“Thank you counselor,” Enjun said before he headed back to his quarters with Tao Gong Gong following silently behind. While Tao Gong Gong quickly dozed off on the other side of the room, Enjun laid awake in bed with his right hand behind his head in thought before finally succumbing to the yawns and the weight of his eyelids.

Meanwhile, Wen Zhuo and Wing Yi reached the outskirts of the town. It was still dark, but a hint of sunlight was beginning to break through, signaling that morning was quickly approaching. Wen Zhuo gave signals to halt as he and Wing Yi dismounted their horses. He walked up to one of the soldiers and whispered the order into his ear. The soldier nodded solemnly before swiftly mounting Wing Yi’s horse. Without any further delays, Wen Zhuo remounted his horse and helped Wing Yi onto the saddle.

“God speed,” Wen Zhuo said to the team that was now forced to make the trip to Zheng Zhuo by themselves. With a stern hand, he turned the reins back in the direction of Wen Xian, while Wing Yi braced herself for a breakneck ride. Under the cover of darkness, they can be concealed. But ever so imminent was the sunlight that would cast upon them, revealing their location and posing more risks.

In about half the time it took them to reach the outskirts of Wen Xian, the two finally arrived. As expected, Siu Chun was there to open the backdoor.

“Just tie the horse here,” Siu Chun instructed in a low voice. “I’ll find him a stable to stay later.”

It was surprising how quiet and still everything was. Besides the slight creaking of the steps as the three climbed the staircase, the brothel was undisturbed. Taking care to make their entrance as unnoticed as possible, Wen Zhuo and Wing Yi hastily slipped into Siu Chun’s quarters.

“You two stay here, I’ll be right back,” Siu Chun whispered before resealing the door from the outside.

Both remained silent as they walked towards the wooden table where a small candle was burning, providing just enough light to see shapes and figures but not details. They patiently waited for Siu Chun to return, making as little movements as possible, to avoid any superfluous noises. In a short time, Siu Chun returned and took a seat next to Wing Yi.

“Let’s wait till later to talk,” he advised and then suggested. “Anyways, you two must still be sleepy. Get some sleep now, and I will wake you guys a little later. Okay?”

Wing Yi and Wen Zhuo nodded in compliance as they took to their respective beds. Siu Chun offered his bed to Wen Zhuo instead of the floor before he left to go to the kitchen.

“You have to wake up so early?” Wing Yi whispered as Siu Chun stood over her with a smile.

“Yeah, I usually wake up early anyways to get the brothel ready to open,” he said before leaving the room.

He made his way to the kitchen to brew the herbal medicine for Madame Ling. Ever since he had tried to quit gambling to save money for the medicine, he had to busy himself with various tasks around the brothel in order to keep his mind off of gambling. Although the gambling addiction is strong, his devotion to Madame Ling is and will always be much stronger. Considering all the things she has sacrificed for him, Siu Chun felt worthless because all he can do now is to carry out a petty task of brewing medicine while watching her condition deteriorate as time progresses. What was worst was the fact that he must keep it a secret from her. He has decided that knowing would not make a difference; only cause more heartache.

It was good to have Wing Yi here again to share his pent up emotions. He did not want to think that eventually both Madame Ling and Wing Yi, the only people that really mattered to him, would leave him.

In his heart, he no longer wants to be working at the brothel. He dreams to be a successful carpenter and opening up his own little store in town. Unfortunately with Madame Ling condition, he has to take over and keep the brothel running, and in the process abandon his dreams.

The sunlight finally reached the streets, and shop doors were beginning to open. Siu Chun’s thoughts dissipated quickly and reality came clear once more. The medicine was done as he goes to pour the content into a small porcelain cup and sealing it with the lid. With determination in his steps, he walked back into the brothel house and headed towards Madame Ling’s quarters.

Thanks for your continued support, it means a lot.

    ******************
    The Transformation

Wing Yi was too anxious to get any further rest as she lie staring into the ceiling. Reality came bearing down on her; she would once again dress like a female. Even as a child and living with Li MaMa, Wing Yi had never really liked the idea of wearing fancy silk dresses like other little girls in town with their cheeks painted a faint pink and their braided hairs adorn with expensive laces. It was in her nature to dress comfortably, which were worn down clothes that Li MaMa had stitched for her a few years prior. They were clothes that she could run and play in without having to worry about ruining. And although, she would look on with admiration at the rich little girls, she never envied their wealth. As long as there is a roof over her head, two meals a day, and her loved ones with her, she was content.

Suddenly, the image of Gai Gong Gong popped into her head, and she remembered him warning her about revealing her true identity. Unfortunately, the plan had already proceeded, and there is no turning back. Luckily for her, she was an eunuch in the eyes of her masters, so that would ensure that her act will be convincing but will not reveal that she is in fact a female. Nonetheless, doubts still riddled her mind.

Turning over slightly, she could see Wen Zhuo lying motionless with his arm resting on his forehead. Whether he was asleep or not, she could not tell. However, the silence that had surrounded them just a few minutes ago was broken by the sounds of doors opening down the length of the hall. Women’s voices and footsteps began to collect and fuse into a loud up roaring that signaled another chaotic workday has arrived. After awhile, Wing Yi could hear the last person hastily descending the stairway. The empty hallway went back to its undisturbed state. Not soon afterwards, distinct footsteps were heard heading her way. Smiling, Wing Yi quietly sat up in her bed.

As expected, it was Siu Chun. He promptly let himself in and resealed the doors. Placing the tray of food down, he waved Wing Yi over. As she sat down, Siu Chun pointed towards Wen Zhuo.

“Is he sleeping?” Siu Chun asked.

“Maybe, let me go wake him,” Wing Yi whispered.

“Yeah, that would be good,” he agreed. “With you here, I doubt he will have anything left to eat for breakfast.”

Wing Yi stuck her tongue out good-humoredly before walking over to wake Wen Zhuo. Even though she was gentle in shaking him, Wen Zhuo awoke in alarm, fearing the worst had happened.

“It is just me, Wing Yi,” she repeated, smiling down at him.

Gathering himself, Wen Zhuo ambled over to the table to join them. While eating, the three discussed the day’s agenda.

“Today, all we are going to do is get ready; making sure Wing Yi can turn into a girl, a brothel girl,” Siu Chun emphasized, trying hard not to smile at the thought. “Wing Yi, you must walk, talk, and act like one. It is going to be a lot to learn in one day, but I think you can pull it off.”

Wing Yi nodded with a forced smile.

Then Wen Zhuo posed the likely question, “Siu Chun, won’t you need to work today?”

“Yeah, I am working. If any of the girls were to ask, I would tell them that I brought in a newcomer today as a request from a special customer. But it will not be me who does the whole transformation. I have a reliable help on hand for that task.”

“Ahh…I see. I was just worried that things would appear suspicious to them especially if Wing Yi stays for only a short period of time.”

“That’s a problem, but I am thinking that I’ll just tell them that the customer paid for her to quit the brothel and become his mistress. But you are right Wen Zhuo, these girls’ tongues like to wag a lot and gossip is common here. Don’t worry though, after a short time, things usually die down.”

    Wen Zhuo nodded in understanding.

“So what instruments can you play?” Siu Chun inquired, now directed his question at Wing Yi.

“What do you mean?” Wing Yi asked, perplexed.

“Well, brothel girls know how to play a few musical instruments to impress the customers,” Siu Chun stately as a matter of fact. “It is a good way to charm the men, and then you can offer them lots of liquor to drink while they are watching you.”

“Getting him drunk will be our best bet at getting him to tell us what we want to know,” Wen Zhuo agreed. “That is very good plan, Siu Chun.”

“Thanks,” Siu Chun said with a smile and then inquired of Wing Yi. “So, what do you think?”

With a brief sigh, Wing Yi said, “I think it is a good plan too.”

“Well, I don’t remember you playing any instruments when we were young but maybe you do now?” he commented, eyes smiling.

“Yes, I know how to play the zheng,” she answered apprehensively. “Will that be okay?”

“Yes, that would be perfect!” Siu Chun exclaimed but immediately lowered his voice. “Okay then, I will have a zheng set up for you.” Rubbing his chin in thought, he once again spoke up, “First, we must get you fitted for some dresses. I have a few chosen out for you already. You can go and try them on. Just go three doors down, and there will be someone there to help you with the makeup.”

Speechless and overwhelmed, Wing Yi staggered out of her seat and towards the door. She gave Siu Chun a look of desperation. “Don’t worry,” he said, offering words of encouragement, before resealing the door.

To avoid attention, Wing Yi quickly made her way to the room, which she now realized was Madame Ling’s room. The door was opened ajar, signaling the guest to approach at will. Wing Yi slowly opened the door and entered.

“Close the door behind you dear,” a faint voice instructed. Wing Yi strained her eyes to locate where Madame Ling was. As Wing Yi approached the center of the room, she could then see a small figure emerging from behind the wooden blinds. Draped over the figure’s left arm were several articles of clothing.

“Please let me help you with that,” Wing Yi insisted, swiftly taking over the task. “I’ll just put it on the table for the moment.”

Madame Ling nodded slowly as she took a seat Wing Yi offered. Realizing that Madame Ling was going to help her transform into a female role came as a good and a bad news. Good news because she was the most experienced and the only person Wing Yi could be comfortable around, especially in this delicate process. The bad thing was due to her poor health. Despite her mixed feelings, Wing Yi knew that she could not deny Madame Ling’s offer to help.

Wing Yi had a look of bafflement on her face, which apparently Madame Ling saw. “I made him tell me. There’s not need to explain.” was all she said. Both Wing Yi and she smiled in acknowledgement.

“Thank you so much, Ling Mama,” Wing Yi said tenderly, embracing her.

Madame Ling lightly cupped Wing Yi’s delicate face with her hands. “When I’m done, you will be the most beautiful girl this town has ever seen,” she announced proudly, like that of a real mother.

When Wing Yi removed her shirt and revealed her the bounded chest, Madame Ling was a little alarmed but said nothing as she goes to grab Wing Yi’s new attire. One by one, Wing Yi tried on the dresses. The first one was a faint orange dress with embroideries on the hems and along the wide flowing cuffs. There were little shiny silk laces that decorate the arms and pant legs of the dress. The second one was a light pink color. There was a white undershirt that is covered over by the outside shirt, which had a distinct embroidered collar. The last outfit was a classic white with imprints of pink flowers throughout. The collar was button higher up with fancy, gold colored Chinese knot for buttons. It was much more feminine looking due to the flowing fabric. Although each one fitted well to her slim figure, the last one made Wing Yi looked heavenly like an angel.

Madame Ling smiled as she told Wing Yi to turn around a few times. “This one is perfect,” she remarked and then looked up at Wing Yi’s head. “Well dear, you will need to take your cap down and let me work on your face and hair.”

With complete compliance, Wing Yi took down the cap and washed her face before returning to the makeup counter where Madame Ling was already taking out the comb. The whole process went relatively fast with Wing Yi sitting still while Madame Ling enhanced her cheekbones with a subtle makeup and a little eye shadow to bring out her soulful eyes. The final touch was the red folded paper upon which Madame Ling instructed Wing Yi to press down her lips for a few seconds. Once Wing Yi released hold of the red paper, the process of transforming her appearance back into a girl was complete.

“Now look at the mirror,” Madame Ling instructed with a smile on her face.

Wing Yi was in shock at the image reflected back. It looked almost nothing like her, even the eyes that stared back was unfamiliar. In the mirror, she could see that her hair was swept back behind her ears and several pins held up the braids; some were butterfly shaped while others were just regular gold pins. Her long, shiny ebony hair reached far down her back.

“Yes dear, this is really you,” Madame Ling answered Wing Yi’s conflicted expression. “It is just that all that men’s clothing have been used to cover up your natural beauty.”

Wing Yi blushed slightly at the remark. It was the first time in many years that Wing Yi began to feel like she was indeed a girl. However, the feeling was unsettling.

“Well, we don’t have much time left, and I still need to teach you all the basics,” Madame Ling pointed out. “Let’s start with the walking and sitting posture. Then afterwards hand movements and then I will teach you some basics in starting an interesting conversation. Are you ready my dear?”

“Yes, I am ready,” Wing Yi stated resolutely.

So almost half the day was spent in Madame Ling’s quarters where Wing Yi was busy practicing over and over again until she got it at a satisfactory level. No matter how many times she tripped or failed, Wing Yi was determined to get it right and Madame Ling made sure that she does. All the meanwhile, Siu Chun had busied himself with matters of the brothel and attending to the customers. Wen Zhuo had stayed in quietly in the quarter writing a letter. It was much he could do now except to stay in hiding and wait for the right moment to take action.

Luckily Wing Yi was a quick learner, and so by afternoon, she was ready to be presented to her friends for approval. Leaving Madame Ling to a well-deserved afternoon nap, Wing Yi made her way to Siu Chun’s quarter. Her hands became sweaty as she reached up to knock the door. Siu Chun’s eyes widened as he opened the door to let her in. As Wen Zhuo looked up from his letter, the reaction to her presence was so overwhelming that he spilt the black inkbottle on the floor while getting up. Both guys remained speechless, as they looked upon her in complete awe.

“Incredible,” Wen Zhuo commented at last to break the silence, eyes still transfixed on Wing Yi. Even in the palace, he has never seen a maiden as breathtaking as his eunuch friend that is standing before him in drags.

Of course Siu Chun knew that she was indeed a girl, but her appearance now was nothing like that of her youth; she was pretty before, but now she was enchantingly beautiful.

“That is one amazing transformation,” Wen Zhuo emphasized, admiring her from afar. “I still cannot believe my eyes.”

Wing Yi beamed and blushed simultaneously by the reaction of the two guys, which only made her look more feminine.

“Enjun has to see you,” Wen Zhuo commented with a smile. “He would never believe his eyes.”

    A Drunken Customer

“Okay, show us what you can do,” Siu Chun teased good-naturedly.

While closing her eyes, Wing Yi inhaled and exhaled, trying to remember all that Madame Ling has taught her. “Walking,” she said to herself as she opened her eyes. The first step was a little stiff, and her back was not completely straight. But after three steps, she consciously fixed it and began to let herself flow effortlessly around the table with her pink, silk handkerchief gracefully flowing beside her right hip. Wen Zhuo and Siu Chun both nodded approvingly with admiration in their eyes.

    “Next?” Siu Chun reminded her.

Gradually slowing her steps, Wing Yi swayed over to the table while stuffing the handkerchief into the side of the dress.

“Can I offer you gentlemen some wine?” she said as she reached out for the teapot and forced a wink along with a flirtatious smile.

The two guys chuckled at her painstaking effort to become a true brothel girl. Wen Zhuo politely accepted her kind offer as he watched her slowly pour the tea into a teacup. Siu Chun sighed and shook his head disapprovingly. As Wing Yi moved over to Siu Chun’s side and repeat the procedure, Siu Chun pulled her down to his lap with a devious grin on his face. Startled, she instantly hopped out and glared at him.

“What was that?!” she exclaimed, face flushed.

Siu Chun rolled his eyes and laughed at her predictable reaction. Wen Zhuo was equally as surprised as she at Siu Chun’s behavior, but he knew Siu Chun was not a person to do such and so remained quiet to await his explanation.

“Calm down, Wing Yi,” Siu Chun comforted with a relaxed disposition. “You must know that most men that walk through the brothel door are not polite gentlemen like Wen Zhuo, certainly not the official. You have to control your emotions if something like what I just did occurs. I don’t expect you to be as easygoing as the actual brothel girls, but we can’t have you pour hot tea into the official’s face if the same thing were to happen. Right?”

With a look of embarrassment, Wing Yi nodded in agreement. “I know,” she mumbled. “You just caught me off-guard.”

Siu Chun’s face turned serious as he continued his words of wisdom, “Lots of what happens are often ‘off-guard’. We can’t predict how each customer reacts especially those that are drunk; some might just pass out and some will make sexual advances. Touching of the hands and shoulders are only part of the job, but most customers will go overboard. That’s why we need to have Wen Zhuo here. Well, I can say from experience that about 9 out of 10 men want sex when they come to the brothel. Providing sex is the main role of brothel girls because simply entertaining a customer will not bring in enough money.”

The reality was the tragic livelihoods of all brothel girls. No young girl would ever imagine growing up to become the sole object for men’s sexual pleasures or give up her youth and innocence to the highest bidder.

Suddenly, a knock is heard at the door. The two remained quiet as Siu Chun shouted, “Who’s there?”

“We need you to settle something downstairs,” a girl’s voice replied from the other side of the door. “It seems that a customer refuses to pay.”

“Alright, I’ll be down in a second,” Siu Chun shouted back. With a quick sigh and a weak smile, he got up and walked towards the door. Even before he reached the stairs, he could distinctly hear mingled voices shouting back and forth. Gia spotted Siu Chun and quickly rushed up to met him halfway up the stairway.

“This is the third time this week that something like this has happened,” she remarked with anger in her voice.

    “Is he your customer?”

“Yes, but he had about six of us to serve him. He refuses to pay for the four jugs of liquor, for our services, and for all the food he ordered.”

“How much does he owe us?”

“I think about 125 taels. Well, should I just go to the court and get the guards to come over?”

“No, I think I can handle this,” Siu Chun stated flatly, eyebrows furrowing as he tries to make out the man in the mist of the crowd of angry women.

She leaned in close to Siu Chun and whispered, “I heard you talking to someone in your quarter. Is she the new girl?”

“I already told you,” he said casually, making up a convincing alibi. “She’s a special order from a valuable customer. I was told to get her prepared and ready. If everything goes well, she will be married off to him.”

With a ‘humph’, Gia remarked sarcastically, “How beautiful and elegant could she be? After all, she’s still just another brothel girl.”

In response to her mocking comment, Siu Chun shrugged his shoulders and proceeded to confront the drunken customer with her following close behind. As expected, the bearded man was barely able to stand on his feet as he shouted curses at everyone. He was unaware of Siu Chun approaching from behind.

“Excuse me sir,” he stated in a loud voice.

The man spun around, dazed and foaming at the mouth. Just about when he was about to speak out, he passed out on the ground. His satchel of money fell out of his coat jacket. All the girls simultaneously reached down and tried to snatch it but stopped abruptly by Siu Chun’s voice.

“Someone take him upstairs,” Siu Chun instructed. “I will deal with him when he wakes up.”

Gia spoke up in shock and disbelief, “But the money is right there. Why not just take it and throw him back out in the street where he came from?”

“I’ll make sure you all get your money,” Siu Chun reassured them.

With much reluctance, three girls helped the man from the floor. But out of nowhere, a stout woman came barging through and slapped one of the girls that was carrying the bearded man.

“Release my husband, you *****s!” she yelled in spite. The two other girls quickly let go of their hold, and let the man fell back on the floor.

Wanting to make a haste exit, the woman tried with all her might to lift her unconscious husband from the ground. Even though he was rather hefty in size, she managed to successfully prop him next to her. As she was heading towards the door, Siu Chun stopped her before handing over the satchel.

“Your husband owes us 125 taels,” Siu Chun stated calmly.

The woman glared at the crowd of girls a few feet behind him before focusing her spite at Siu Chun. With the satchel in hand, the woman forcefully threw it at Siu Chun’s chest. The entire content including silver nuggets flew out and scattered on the floor. Without looking back, the woman headed out the door with her drunken husband leaning heavily on her shoulder. Siu Chun remained still as he watched them disappear through the entrance door. Then without another word he walked up the stairway, leaving the brothel girls to collect their share. From the top of the stair, Madame Ling silently witnessed the entire confrontation. With a heavy heart, she retreated back into her quarter.

    The Darkness

Afraid that Madame Ling had been disturbed by the commotion, Siu Chun swiftly climbed the stairs to check. He gingerly entered to find a quiet room that was relatively still except for the faint breathing coming from her bed. Figuring that she was probably resting, Siu Chun quietly resealed the door and walked towards his own quarters where the two friends were eagerly awaiting his return.
“Siu Chun,” Wing Yi greeted warmly, opening the door for him.

“Let’s get back to planning,” he insisted with enthusiasm in his demeanor. “I will get in contact with him and arrange a good time for him to meet Wing Yi.”

“I think the sooner, the better,” Wen Zhuo commented looking over at Wing Yi. “I fear that our efforts might prove fruitless if the plan is dragged out too long.”

Nodding in agreement, Siu Chun remarked, “I will try to get him here no later than two or three days.” He then paused and contemplated. “Okay, and in the meantime, Wing Yi, you will need to keep practicing what Ling MaMa taught you. I think it would be good if you practice with her watching over you. I know she really misses you all these years.” Before finishing, Siu Chun added with a smile, “And besides, you staying in my room the entire time will make the other girls jealous.”

Playing along, Wing Yi smiled coyly, raising her handerchief near her chin and giggled as Madame Ling had instructed earlier.

“Very well done,” Siu Chun commented in good humor and then turned serious. “But if any of the girls here came up to you, try not to speak too much with them. Better yet, just try to avoid them. Like I said before, these girls can be very gossipy. They might spoil our plan.”

Wing Yi nodded knowingly in response.

“Sorry Wen Zhuo, it seems that we have to leave you here by yourself again,” Siu Chun said before getting up.

Wen Zhuo smiled and replied, “Oh, it is quite alright. I already expected to have to lay low for these few days, so it will not be a problem. You two go ahead and do not worry about me.”

Walking over to Wen Zhuo, Wing Yi tapped his shoulders and assured him, “I won’t let Siu Chun forget to feed you.”

Wen Zhuo smiled cordially up at her fair complexion.

Wing Yi slightly blushed and quickly pulled Siu Chun with her out the door. Siu Chun and Wing Yi both went about with their plan for the day. He bid her a brief farewell in front of Madame Ling’s door before descending the stairs and heading towards Official Yen Li’s mansion.

In the far distance, the sun had already begun to set. No wanting to waste anymore time, Siu Chun quickened his pace as he hurried along the relatively crowded street. Within five minutes, he was at the Official’s front door where two guards stood solemnly at their post.

Knowing the routine, Siu Chun immediately declared, “I wish to see the Official. My name is Siu Chun.”

One of the guards unsealed the bronze door and went in to deliver the message.

The massive doors creaked slowly as the guard and the official’s counselor emerged from behind it.

    “Follow me,” the counselor instructed.

On the way to Official Yen Li’s study room, the counselor added, “He has been expecting you for some time.”

“Yes, I am sorry to keep him waiting,” Siu Chun replied, walking alongside him. “But I hope my news will be worth the wait.”

The counselor gave a slight chuckle in response and remained silent for the rest of the way. Once they reached the study room, the counselor gave a faint knock. A sonorous voice from within proclaimed, “Come in.”

He pushed the door open and let Siu Chun enter before resealing the door. Siu Chun spotted the official sitting behind his desk, apparently finishing up some reading. At the sight of Siu Chun, the official smiled broadly and threw down his book.

“Take a seat,” Official Yen Li offered, smiling incessantly.

Sitting down, Siu Chun started out by apologizing, “I’m sorry to have come so late.”

The official waved his words away as his eyes began to dance excitedly. “When can I see her?” he stated directly.

“In two more days. She’s new to our way so she might not be like the other girls. She still needs a couple of days to prepare.”

“Oh, that will not be a problem. Besides, I am tired of the old girls at your place. I need something refreshing. So, she is new then?”

    “Yes sir.”

“Excellent. So tell me a little about her physique?”

“She is about 170 centimeters tall, slim, and has long ebony hair.”

“Intriguing,” the official commented with closed eyes while stroking his beard.

“So because of her inexperience, I hope you can forgive her if she does not act like the other girls.”

“Oh no, I am very understanding.”

Siu Chun can feel himself tensing up with each of his suggestive remarks about Wing Yi. Although she is capable of taking care of herself, he still felt that she might still be susceptible to harm. An uneasy feeling swept over him, like something bad might happen. Quick to catch himself, Siu Chun was able to maintain his demeanor in front of the official. Any raised suspicion could cost the entire plan to fail and put Wing Yi in more danger.

The official was still immersed in his daydreaming when Siu Chun decided to excuse himself.

“Official Yen Li,” he spoke up. “It is getting kind of late. I think I should go and leave you to your royal duties.”

“Yes,” the official agreed, opening his left eye. “Take good care of her for me.”

Siu Chun nodded and forced a smile before getting up and letting himself out. As he went to open the door, he thought he heard the sound of feet schuffling. Once fully outside, Siu Chun peered in all directions to try and figure out who or what made the noise. To his surprise, nothing was there. With a shrug of the shoulders, he quickly left.

From behind the corner of the west end, the counselor emerged from the darkness.

    Hey Quantum

haha...I'm surprised to see a reply especially from you. I had assumed you left like the others. Well, I wouldn't blame them either. Anyway, I'm glad to know you are still around.

    ********************
    Casting Shadows

The darkness now pervaded. The lanterns that hung alongside the closed shops sway unsteadily, casting eerie shadows against the dirt street. Wasting no time, Siu Chun hurried back to the brothel with two shadows following close behind. Finally, as he neared the entrance of the brothel, the girls and the bright lanterns that hung on either side of the entrance warmly greeted Siu Chun. The other shadow quickly faded behind the corner of a shop. With an uneasy feeling, Siu Chun casted a glance back into the darkness before entering the brightness within the brothel.

At the foot of the stairway, Siu Chun glimpse around the entire room and smiled. The mingled voices and occupied tables signaled that business was slowly picking up.

“What’s the smile for?” Gia whispered in his ears. Unbeknownst to him, she had followed him since he came in.

“Business seems good today,” he remarked briefly.

“Better than the last couple of weeks,” she commented and then changed the subject. “You look tired today. Do you want me to get you something to eat?”

“No, I’m fine,” he replied listlessly, making his way up the stairs. “I’ll get something to eat later.”

After a few steps, she stopped him. Hugging onto his left arm, she looked up pleadingly at him. “Siu Chun, why are you ignoring me these past week?” she asked.

Knowing her way, he did not bother to disentangle her from his arm as he continued climbing the stairway. At the top of the stair, he gave her a look of weariness, and she finally let go of her hold. Lingering on stair, she watched him walk to Madame Ling’s quarter. After a few seconds after he knocked, Gia briefly saw a girl emerged to let him in. Unfortunately, before Gia got a better look at Wing Yi, Siu Chun and Wing Yi had already disappeared behind the sealed doors.

“So, she is the reason why,” Gia said under her breath, wringing her handkerchief.

Once inside, Siu Chun quickly came over to Madame Ling’s side. He found her peacefully napping. Wing Yi was pouring him a cup of tea when he made his way over to meet her at the round table nearby.

“Have some tea,” she offered with a smile.

“Have you and Wen Zhuo eaten yet?” Siu Chun asked, after taking a few sips.

“No, we planned to wait for you to have supper with us,” Wing Yi said happily.

Trying to look surprised, he asked jokingly, “So you’ve been sitting around waiting for me and doing nothing?”
Wing Yi smiled and rolled her eyes. “No, I had been practicing. I even wore down Ling MaMa.”

Siu Chun laughed but quickly brought down his volume as to not disturb Madame Ling.

“Yes, laugh as you like, but I will prove to you that I have been hard at work practicing when the time comes,” she said with a smile that challenged the whimsical look on Siu Chun’s face.

“Okay then,” he contested. “You will prove it two days from today.”

“So he has agreed to come then?” Wing Yi inquired with mixed feelings.

“Yeah,” Siu Chun confirmed, looking at her expression. “I don’t know if you are hungry or scared, but we can discuss the rest over supper. I think Wen Zhuo will be happy to see us. You go over there first, and I’ll bring up the food.”

Meanwhile, the counselor returned to Official Yen Li’s side, promptly bringing him a fresh cup of green tea.

“Your tea sir,” he offered, taking note of the official’s changed manner.

The official hesitantly opened his eyes and blankly took the tea.

“Sir, the tea is quite hot,” the counselor quickly advised, then hesitated. “You seem…”

“Go on,” the official declared upon detecting his counselor’s apprehension.

“Different, sir. I do not want to intrude, but I think that you should refrain from going to the brothel. We still have these unwelcome visitors lurking about.”

“Yes, yes, I am fully aware of their presence,” the official said with a scoff. “I will not let these boys and their little soldiers hinder me from keeping an appointment with bliss.” Looking over his cup of tea, the official added, “Not even the emperor can.”

Realizing his unyielding determination, the counselor had no choice but to take his leave.
The counselor retreated to his quarters and lit a small candle on the round table. In the spacious room, he sat and stroked his beard in contemplation. The small amount of light within the room played off of his furrowed eyebrows while revealing deep indentations of woes on his wrinkled forehead. As expected, a tall figure walked past the counselor’s window, creating a slight silhouette.

“Come in,” the counselor instructed, just as the figure approached the doors.

In complete silence, the tall figure briskly entered and resealed the doors. The counselor motioned with his hands for the man to take a seat. Placing his sword upon the table, the man remained quiet, awaiting the counselor to initiate the conversation.

“Did you find out anything?” the counselor questioned in a calm voice.

The man replied in a monotone voice, “No. I followed him to the Jasmine Brothel, but I didn’t detect anything worthy of notice except for that he looked like he was in haste to get there.”

The counselor continued to stroke his beard upon reexamining the evidences. After a moment, he commented, “I feel that they are up to something even though I cannot pinpoint exactly. However, we cannot dismiss this situation like the official has done. That old fool is blinded by lust.”

Talking more so to himself, the counselor continued his rant, “He intends to go the brothel in two days time. That seems to be a likely situation that would provide the opportunity for them to strike. Of course this is only my prediction. Nevertheless, I think I need you to get involved to make sure.”

“Just tell me what I need to do and it shall be done,” the man responded with a cold expression.

“As he will refuse my service, I need you to escort him to the brothel as a bodyguard,” the counselor said with a devious smile played upon his thin lips. “It is your duty to keep him in line.” He paused momentarily and then recalled, “Did any of them try to deliver another mail to the palace?”

“No. You don’t have to worry about this matter. I guarantee you that no mail will go in or go out of Wen Xian.”

“Very good,” the counselor remarked with a sigh of relief. “Keep me informed.”

The tall man nodded, gathering his sword to depart. As he reached the door, the counselor added from his seat, “May the darkness cloak your every move.”

    Alone

All the meanwhile, Enjun continues to pace back and forth in his quarters with Tao Gong Gong quietly looking on in perplexity.

“This is unbearable,” Enjun declared in a defeated tone as he goes to sit down. Pausing for a few seconds, he then turns his attention to his only companion. “Butler Tao, have you heard any news from them?”

Knowing exactly to whom the reference was made, Tao Gong Gong got up and poured Enjun a fresh cup of green tea before he quickly responded, “No, sir.”

After the brief answer, the room once again plummeted into silence. Sipping his tea absent-mindedly, Enjun lets out another long, exasperated sigh. Suddenly his eye glimmered with excitement. “I have an idea,” he proudly announced, taking the last sip before continuing his pace around the room. At his master’s sudden revelation, Tao Gong Gong could feel both feelings of bewilderment and anxiety building up. “To savage both our sanities, I suggest we head out into the markets early tomorrow morning and take a stroll,” Enjun said with fervor.

Relieved, Tao Gong Gong smiled weakly in agreement before suggesting, “If that is your wish, you should probably retire soon. I shall rouse you early tomorrow.”

“Very well,” he agreed and walked over to his bed. “Good night then.”

Tao Gong Gong waited for him to get comfortable before blowing out the candle.

Back at the brothel, the three friends were just beginning to eat their supper. Wen Zhuo made sure to whisper throughout their conversations while Siu Chun and Wing Yi playfully laughed at his efforts.

“We shouldn’t laugh too loud or those girls will think I was in here with you doing something naughty,” Siu Chun said with a winked at Wing Yi. In response, he got a suppressed laughter from Wen Zhuo and a hard jab in the arm from Wing Yi.

“Wow, your response is just like a typical girl,” Siu Chun applauded. “Wing Yi’s act is very convincing, isn’t it?”

Wen Zhuo nodded with a silly grin on his face. “If I didn’t know you, I would have been easily deceived,” he remarked, eyeing her with admiration.

“Okay, enough gentlemen,” Wing Yi finally spoke up, accepting defeat. “Let’s just eat the food before it gets cold.”

“Very well,” Siu Chun remarked and then pondered. “Even though your act seems convincing to us, it might not be to others. They don’t know that you are crossdressing.” He looked up at Wing Yi and Wen Zhuo before continuing, “I think we need a third opinion.”
“Who do you have in mind?” Wing Yi inquired, looking apprehensive.

He puts down his rice bowl and scratches his chin in thought. Looking serious, he commented, “Well, I don’t think it would be a good idea to show you off to any of the girls here. We just want to see if you can blend in with the crowd so…I think the marketplace would be perfect! What do you guys think?”

Both Wing Yi and Wen Zhuo nodded in agreement. However, a concern immediately arose. “So you are just going to let me walk around the marketplace by myself? What if someone were to ask or look weirdly upon me or even worst, recognize me?” Wing Yi inquired with nervousness.

“Don’t worry, Wing Yi,” Siu Chun comforted with a smile. “I’ll escort you. Well, if we plan to do this, it would probably be best to do so in the morning since there are less people so that you won’t feel overwhelmed.”

With a sigh, Wing Yi nodded, relieved in knowing that she will not be alone.

“Alright, it is settled, I’ll come get you early tomorrow,” Siu Chun declared. “Let’s finish eating and then get to bed early.”

After the meal was over, Wing Yi bid her friends good night before going to stay with Madame Ling. She was already asleep when Wing Yi came in to lie beside her. Listening to her soft breathing, Wing Yi closed her eyes and quickly drifted off to sleep. Her last thought was about Enjun and how he was getting along without them.

Morning came quickly, but even before the sun rose, Enjun was already up. By the audible snoring, it was evident that Tao Gong Gong was still sleeping. Since it was still early, Enjun decided to let him sleep for a little longer. Feeling his way towards the door, he opened the wooden doors and let the cool morning air slowly drift into the room. Quickly, he donned his cloak before venturing outside. Immediately the crisp air greeted him. Leaning on the railing, he closed his eyes and inhaled deeply. In that moment, he realized what it felt to be utterly alone and yet so peaceful; all woes, all worries, and all of reality were just a blur. When he opened his eyes, something caught his attention in the distant. On the other side of the garden, two figures stood, likely conversing to each other. Suddenly one of them looked up to survey the vicinity. In response, Enjun quickly hid behind the nearest pillar. After a brief pause, he peered out, but to his surprise, the figures were no longer there. His heartbeat quickened as he restlessly continued to scan the area. Suddenly a rigid hand was laid on his shoulder. Instantaneously, he felt as though his heart had skipped a beat. Cold beads of sweat lingered on his eyebrow as he summoned the courage to turn around.

To his great relief, the hand belonged to Tao Gong Gong. Realizing his master’s agitated state, he quickly apologized before escorting Enjun back into the room. In fact, Tao Gong Gong did announce his presence before approaching; however, Enjun was too preoccupied to hear him.
Tao Gong Gong timidly suggested, “Maybe you should cancel your plans to go out this morning.”

“Nonsense,” Enjun protested with gathering confidence. “It will be just what I need right now.”

With a compliant nod, Tao Gong Gong added meekly, “I’ll go get breakfast prepared and bring back a warm basin of water for you.”

“Thank you,” Enjun replied before Tao Gong Gong left to attend to his duties.

Once alone, Enjun contemplated, “Could it all be just my imagination? Maybe I was still not full awake. If they were indeed there, how could they have disappeared so quickly? Maybe they saw me and quickly dispersed. Maybe I’m going mad.” His thoughts ran wild as he tried to remember exactly what happened.

    A Morning Stroll

Over at the brothel, everyone was still asleep as the sun was beginning to rise in the east with seemingly much reluctance. Siu Chun was the first to stir. Swiftly and quietly he left his quarters and headed over to wake Wing Yi for her important day. Once he was at the door, he gave a faint knock. Within seconds, Wing Yi opened the door with a smile.

“Get ready,” Siu Chun whispered. “I’m going to get the medicine and then we can go. Just give me ten minutes.”

    Wing Yi nodded obediently.

“So how did you sleep?” he asked.

“Very well,” she replied with a bright grin.

“Good,” Siu said before leaving, “Well, let’s hurry up since we have to get out in the market early to avoid the crowd.”

“I know,” she said, playfully pushing him away. “Go already!”

He descended the stairs as Wing Yi closed the door to get ready.

In the meantime, Enjun and Tao Gong Gong headed out to the markets. Enjun walked briskly in front with Tao Gong Gong following close behind with a watchful eye over the surrounding. Feeling revitalized, Enjun greeted everyone he walked by and struck up conversations with the storeowners who were more than willing to chat with a potential customer. Enjun was amazed by everything he saw. From the foods to the crafts, it was nothing he had ever seen in the luxurious palace. He found that civilian life was full of energy and vivacity compared to the life behind the massive walls. Taking his time, Enjun wandered the streets but unbeknownst to him or Tao Gong Gong, someone was following the two them from a distant.

Ten minutes have passed and Wing Yi quickly descended the stairs. But to her surprise, Gia was standing at the foot of the staircase, fanning herself while eyeing Wing Yi closely. Wing Yi had no choice but to continue her descent, coming face to face with Gia.

Gai continued to stare at Wing Yi with a smirk on her lips. In her friendly manner, Wing Yi smiled and said “good morning” but received no acknowledgment in return.

Looking at Wing Yi over once more, Gia inquired authoritatively, “What’s your name?”

Wing Yi knew that revealing her name might trigger a negative response so she kept quiet. Luckily, Siu Chun emerged from the kitchen just in time.

“You’re up early, Gia,” he remarked as he walked up to meet them.

Gia swung her long, braided hair back and casually replied with her gaze directly aimed at Wing Yi, “Oh, some racket a few doors down woke me.”

“Well, since you are already up, you might has well get this place ready to open in another hour,” Siu Chun commented and then briefly looked at Wing Yi. “I’m taking her out to the market to buy a few adornments and makeup while I pick up the medication for Ling MaMa. We’ll be back in a few hours.” Not waiting for her to ask more questions that might expose Wing Yi’s identity, Siu Chun quickly walked out with Wing Yi alongside him.

Once the two of them were on the street, Siu Chun leaned in and whispered, “Let’s hope you pass as a female.” He then tried to suppress his giggles. Wing Yi was about to give him a good jab in the ribs but restrained herself because the act would not be considered lady like.

“Yes, joke all you want. I am after all a girl, you know,” she said, trying to sound sweet while smiling emphatically.

“Well yes, it should come naturally for most girls, but I’m not so sure about you,” he insisted with a devilish grin. “I’m afraid that you’ve forgotten.”

“Act natural, people are looking,” he advised with a smile as male passer-bys look on admiringly at Wing Yi.

Feeling their eyes on her, Wing Yi immediately responded by looking down toward the ground as her steps quickened.

“Not used to all the attention, huh?” Siu Chun asked in good humor, while nudging her to slow down. “Relax. The attention is normal and is a good thing for people in our line of work. Just smile back, but don’t just look at the ground or you might run someone over.”

When she tried to smile at the women, they reacted totally the opposite, giving her disapproving glances. Although Wing Yi resembled the daughter of some high-ranking official, her association with Siu Chun made the women jeer at her.

Her beautiful smile faded as her nerves were beginning to give way. In an act to stablize herself, she grabbed onto Siu Chun’s left arm, holding on tight.

“Forget those women, they’re just jealous of you,” Siu Chun tried to comfort her and then he got serious. “The truth is that being a brothel girl really places a girl in the bottom of society. Unfortunately, it is the only option in many cases. I’m sorry for making you do this. It was a bad idea.”

Wing Yi looked up at him and remarked, “Don’t say that. It’s not your fault. I just can’t believe how some people are so quick to judge others. Well, don’t worry about me. I’ll just be fine.”

Slowly releasing her hold on Siu Chun’s arm, Wing Yi’s eye caught a glimpse of the storeowner’s wife piercing stare from across the street. Siu Chun saw it too and nudge Wing Yi to resume their walk. With determination, she said to him, “Let’s not waste anymore time. I’ll have a look around by myself while you go buy Ling MaMa’s medication. I’ll meet you back at the brothel.”

Siu Chun was about to object, but he could tell from her expression that it was going to be useless. “Alright, here’s some money,” he said, reaching into his inner pockets.

Wing Yi stopped him, “You save that money for Ling MaMa’s medication. I have some on me.”

Not knowing what else to say, Siu Chun concluded, “Okay, I’ll see you back at the brothel then.” With a nod and encouraging smile, Wing Yi waved him goodbye and watched him walk off down the street.

With elegance and grace, Wing Yi walked over to the bookstore where two eyes, full of hate, laid glued on her. From behind the back door, the husband emerged carrying a pile of books that needed to be shelved. The old man spoke up before asking his wife to help him, “Please feel free to look around, let us know if we can be of any assistance.” With much reluctance, the wife goes to help her husband, but she still kept a wary eye on Wing Yi’s every movement as she browsed around. A beautiful stationary set caught Wing Yi’s wandering eyes. Holding up the brush, she knew it was made of the finest fox hair. It was just the kind Enjun used in the palace. The ink holder was carved out of white marble that resembled a dragon. The twenty sheets of paper were made from cotton.

Even before asking, she knew that she did not have enough money to purchase the whole set. “Excuse sir, can you tell me how much this stationary set costs,” Wing Yi asked politely.

“They can write?” the wife said under her breath.

The husband paid his wife no heed as he goes over to help Wing Yi. “It is a hundred taels, madam.”

“How much for the ink holder sir?” she inquired hopefully.

“I am sorry,” he answered. “Selling it off would ruin the set.”

“I see, thank you sir,” Wing Yi said with disappointment on her face. As she turned around to leave, the old man called her back.

“Twenty five taels for the ink holder,” he said with smile while his wife looked on in bewilderment. Wing Yi quickly paid while the old man placed it in a small box for her.

Smiling from ear to ear, she held the box close as she walked out the store. On her way out, she unknowingly bumped into an arriving customer. “I’m so sorry,” she quickly apologized before walking briskly back to the brothel. She was too embarrassed to look directly at the customer as she scurried out. The arriving customer did however get a good look at her as she left. He stood in a trance at the entranceway.

“Such a fair maiden,” he said to Tao Gong Gong as he continued to watch even after she disappeared around the corner.

His trance was broken when the storeowner asked, “What can I help you with today good sir?”

“Tell me sir,” Enjun said, leaning in. “What did she purchase just now?”

“An ink holder from this set,” he said, pointing to the incomplete set.

“I’ll buy it,” Enjun said and walked out dazed, leaving Tao Gong Gong to pay.

    The Gift

Another day passed and the momentous day was only one night away. Preparations for the official’s arrival had been finished earlier today. Siu Chun had arranged a room for the official to stay. Space was a big issue even though this was the largest room at the brothel, reserved for special, upperclass customers. Taking in Wen Zhuo’s suggestion, Siu Chun arranged for Wen Zhuo to hide underneath the bed. Other ideas that were rejected included hiding behind the wooden closet, underneath the large round table, and behind the tall, wooden clothes changer (sorry guys, I don’t remember the name for those). All those locations were too obvious and could easily be detected. An advantage to hiding underneath the bed would be to give Wen Zhuo a good view of the entire room. What he would do was lie in waiting like a lion preparing to pounce on the unexpecting target. But of course, all three hoped that it would not come to such measures.

The round, wonderfully carved table was pulled closer to the doorway and slightly further from the bed. Other details included strategically placing the zheng directly opposite of the bed and near the side window. In order to give that romantic atmosphere, the curtains were drawn partially opened with red ribbons to let in the air from outside. The bed was decorated with an embroidered, red blanket. In addition, rose perfume was generously sprayed on the bed sheet, but just enough as to not overwhelm Wen Zhuo. Siu Chun took the liberty to order from a local restaurant their finest wine that was also powerful enough to do the job. Of course this was all possible because the other day, one of the official’s men came by to deliver the money and passed on the official’s wishes to spare no expense for the preparation.

It was late when Wing Yi, Wen Zhuo, and Siu Chun gathered in the room to have a late night dinner. Wing Yi had been practicing her music act for the past few hours and now took a break. Today was a special day since it was Wen Zhuo’s birthday. Both Wing Yi and Siu Chun knew about it, Wen Zhuo insisted that business at hand should be of top priority. Siu Chun had just come back with a tray full of food and a small wine bottle.

Wing Yi took the initiative to pour each of them a small cup before letting Siu Chun do the toasting. Raising his cup, he said with a smile and a wink at the end, “Here’s to Wen Zhuo, a good friend. This is not much, but it is our way of celebrating your big day. May you be in good health, be promoted in your job, and find a nice girl to settle down with.”

“Thank you Siu Chun,” Wen Zhuo said with a big smile while blushing slightly from the last remark.

“Your turn Wing Yi,” Siu Chun insisted cheerfully and poured himself another cup.

“I don’t really know what to say. Well, I’m really glad to have such a friend. I’m happy to get a chance to celebrate this day with you.” Then there was a slight pause before she finished, “and everything else Siu Chun said.”

The three laughed, but tried to tone it down so as to not wake the others who were already sleeping.

When it was Wen Zhuo’s turn, he stood up and toasted briefly, “I’m glad to celebrate this day with my friends. It means a lot to me. Thank you, you two.”

Siu Chun said good-naturedly, gesturing to the cake in the tray, “Well, Wing Yi told me at the last minute so I didn’t have time to get you something from the store. Instead I found a piece of cake from the kitchen.”

Wen Zhuo took a spoonful and happily declared, “Thank you.”

Wing Yi and Siu Chun contently watched him quickly devouring the piece of cake within seconds. Afraid that he might choke, she poured him another cup of wine to wash it down before making way to the bed and retrieving her gift.

Both guys intently watched her actions as she made her way back to join them at the table. From behind her long sleeve, she revealed the small ink holder and turned it over to Wen Zhuo who was speechless for a minute.

“It is very beautiful, thank you” he commented, looking up from it. “It must have been rather expensive.”

“So that was what you bought the other day when we went to the market,” Siu Chun surmised with a sad smile and poured himself another cup of wine.

Wing Yi nodded and worriedly added, “Siu Chun, you’ve been drinking a lot tonight, this should be your last cup.”

“Alright, let’s call it a night,” Siu Chun announced a little drunk, as he started to clear the table and both Wing Yi and Wen Zhuo joined in to help. “We need to get a good night’s rest before tomorrow.”

“Do you need me to help you get this stuff to the kitchen?” Wing Yi offered.

“No, I’ll be fine,” he said walking to the door with Wen Zhuo following him. “Happy birthday,” he said before leaving.

With a smile and a ‘thank you’, Wen Zhuo closed the door and returned to the table to help Wing Yi get the table back into its original condition. After they were done, there was a moment of awkwardness due to the sleeping situation. Since they did not want to raise suspicion or get caught, they decided that the best way was for Wen Zhuo to stay in the room until the official arrives. Since it was now technically Wing Yi’s room, she was expected to stay there as well.

Before she was dressed as a girl, both she and Wen Zhuo did not feel the awkwardness of sleeping in the same room. Even though Wen Zhuo knew that she was a eunuch, he still felt uneasy and shy. It was a strange feeling that he could not hide.
Quickly he offered, “I’ll just sleep on the floor for tonight.”

Relieved, Wing Yi smiled and went over to the bed and retrieved the extra blanket and pillow.

“Thank you,” Wen Zhuo said meekly and immediately started to arrange a place on the floor near the window.

“I’ll get the lights,” Wing Yi offered and blew out the candle.

From the window, he said softly, “Wing Yi?”

“Yes?” she replied as she sat on the bed, getting ready to lay down.

“Um…thank you for the present, I really like it.”

“You’re welcome. I’m glad you like it.”

Then there was a moment of silence and then he spoke up again, “Good night.”

“Good night,” she responded before closing her eyes.

    The Entertainer

Morning and evening came swiftly, and like any other day the brothel opened for business and everything proceeded accordingly. In Wing Yi’s room, Wing Yi and Wen Zhuo patiently awaited for the faithful moment to arrive. All the meanwhile, the two of them played Xiangqi (Chinese chess) to keep themselves preoccupied. The busy Siu Chun would occasionally drop in to give them some refreshments.

As the sun began to set over the western horizon, Siu Chun popped back in with news. Both Wing Yi’s and Wen Zhuo’s attention was now fixated on him, realizing that time has now drawn nearer. From the two’s expression, Siu Chun quickly shook his head to ease their nerves, sealed the door, and took a seat at the table.

“Siu Chun, any news?” Wen Zhuo asked.

In response, he replied with a sigh as he looked at the two of them, “One of his men just came to tell me that he tends to arrive in another hour.” Then his attention directed at Wing Yi, and he asked with concern, “Can you handle this?”

With assuring smile she commented, “Yes.” She paused and tried to liven up the atmosphere by adding, “If I had said ‘no’, what would you do?”

“Good question,” Siu Chun said while pretending to stroke an invisible beard. “I daresay I would be locked in the official’s prison for the rest of my life.”

All three chuckled at the clever reply.

Then Siu Chun became serious once again, asking, “Wen Zhuo, are you sure you don’t need some sort of weapon just in case?”

“I don’t think that will be necessary,” Wen Zhuo remarked with equal seriousness in his voice. The mission was definitely no laughing matter. While surveying the room, he said, “I think I will be able to use the stool if need be. Besides, carrying a weapon around would make us look guilty if something were to go wrong.”

Siu Chun nodded in solemn agreement. The atmosphere was becoming tenser as time passed. “Well, I better go outside and get ready for his arrival,” he said, trying to sound upbeat. “The next time you see me it will be with the official.”

It was Wen Zhuo’s cue to take his place underneath the bed while Wing Yi escorted Siu Chun out. “I’ll be fine,” she reassured him before sealing the door. Instead of resuming her position at the table, she walked over to the windows and stood there with her eyes closed.

Wen Zhuo saw her from his cover and asked in a whispered voice, “Wing Yi, are you alright?”

Opening her eyes, she turned her head towards the voice and replied, “I’m fine. How are you doing down there? How’s the ventilation?”

“Don’t worry about me,” he whispered back. “Everything is fine. Can you see me from there?”

“No,” Wing yi said after walking around and inspecting from all angles.

“Good, thanks,” a voice from under the bed replied.

Not knowing what to do in the meantime, Wing Yi went over to the zheng and began playing methodically. Too preoccupied with the music, she did not realize that the official already entered the brothel and was now making his way up the stairs with Siu Chun directing the way. Following each step the official made, the guard remained glued to his side while keeping a piercing eye on the surrounding. It took them no time to reach Wing Yi’s door. Official Jian Din stood patiently stroking his beard and closed his eyes.

Acting normal, Siu Chun smiled cordially while knocking on the door. At the sound, Wing Yi’s heart seemed to have skipped a beat. Instantaneously, she stopped playing, but her hands remained on the musical instrument. Quick to gather her composure, she laid down the zheng and rushed to the door, took a deep breath and opened the door slightly. Even though her head was slightly tilted downwards and not looking directly at him, she could feel his eyes transfixed on her. He raised a hand to stroke her face, but she quickly moved to one side and opened the door completely while saying sweetly, “Please come in, sir.”

“A shy one I see,” the official remarked to Siu Chun with a chuckle before entering. The guard took a step in but immediately the official commanded, “You stay outside and wait for my permission to come in.” The guard, his face showing no emotions, did as he was ordered and promptly went outside.

“Wing Yi, pour the official some wine to start off,” Siu Chun instructed while escorting the official to the table.

Official Jian Din eyed her every move with great interest and remarked, “Wing Yi, what a beautiful name. I had a small canary once that shares your name. I see some resemblance in your nature.”

Assuming the feminine role, she strolled over with the small bottle in hand. While pouring, she replied, “Thank you sir.” Wanting to entice his interest, she inquired of his last remark. “How’s my nature, sir, to resemble the canary?”

Stroking his beard, he responded coolly, “A very shy creature, she was. She sat in her gilded cage, quiet and never sung any songs. Others would tell me to get another bird to replace her, but I found her unique amongst all the birds I’ve had in the past. I kept her for ten years and still never a song.” Then a slight pause as he looked her over once more before continuing, “However, I think you two also differ in one aspect.”

“The fact that I’m human and she’s a bird,” Wing Yi answered sweetly, taking a seat beside him.

With a smile and a casual movement, he grabbed hold of her right hand and held it in both of his. Wanting immediately to disengage his hold on her, she resisted the urge, knowing that she must control herself to complete the mission. Siu Chun stood there, trying hard to hold onto his own emotions.

“No, Wing Yi, my dear,” he said, looking down at her hands and then at the zheng. “You are different in that I’ve heard you sing.”

Wing Yi reacted by pretending to pull her hand away and walking over to the zheng to play for him.

Now noticing Siu Chun’s presence, official Jian Din quickly ordered, “Bring us some more food and wine.”

“I’ll be right back sir,” Siu Chun replied, reluctant to leaving the scene.

Just before he left, the official remarked, “Take your time.”

Directing all his attention back to Wing Yi, he insisted, “Go on, my little canary, I want to hear you sing me a song.”

Feeling repulsed by his little nickname for her, she forced a smile and began. Her fingers glided across the strings effortlessly, and sounds instantaneously came flooding out, filling the room. She played with vigor as if she was sparring with the zheng. Several strands of her long, ebony hair picked up the breeze from the window nearby and fluttered like the wings of a butterfly. The official was mesmerized by both her beauty and talent. From beneath the bed, Wen Zhuo was also caught in the trance.

Minutes later into the performance, she knew that she had to begin the interrogation, but the first thing she needed to do was get him drunk. At the end of the third song, the official clapped his hands and proceeded to go over to her. Taking a seat next to Wing Yi, he stroked her face lightly with the backside of his hand. She tried to remain calm but could feel the situation getting tenser by the minute.

“You’re as lovely as the music you make,” he remarked, leaning in for a kiss. Suddenly, there’s a knock at the door.

“I’ll get it,” she quickly said, immediately standing up. She breathed a sigh of relief as she made her way to the door. Wing Yi knew who was standing behind the door even before she opened it.

Siu Chun saw her flushed face and his heart began beating wildly. Seeing the concern on his face, she quickly smiled to let him know that she was alright.

“Let me help you with these,” she insisted, carrying the tray while Siu Chun carried the wine bottles.

The official remained seated beside the zheng with his eyes closed while stroking his beard. After Siu Chun and Wing Yi placed the food, the official motioned for Siu Chun to approach him.

“You could not have come at a more inopportune time,” he said huskily. “I don’t want to be bothered for the remainder of the night.”

Siu Chun quickly apologized and left after he finished setting out the food. Before sealing the door, Wing Yi gave him a final look, knowing fully well it was going to be the last time she saw him for the remainder of the night. Realizing the task at hand, she resumed her place at the table next to official Jian Din. As instructed previously, she picked out some of the food and diligently placed them into his bowl. Then she proceeded to pour him another glass of wine.

“You have some with me,” he urged. “I don’t want to drink alone.”

“Yes, but only a little since I’m not used to drinking,” she replied and then sipped a taste.

“Very well then, since you won’t be drinking,” he offered an idea. “Tell me about yourself.” Then he drank another glass. Wing Yi was more than happy to refill them every chance she got.

“What would you like to know sir?” she inquired.

“Well first off, call me Jian,” he said, with a smile. “Sir makes me sound so old. You don’t think I’m old do you?”

“It does not matter,” she answered to his liking. “Age is not important to me.”

Satisfied with her answer, he asked on, “What do you think of my beard?”

“A beard is a sign of wisdom,” she said, trying to evade the question posed.

He chuckled and said, “Give me your hand.”

Hesistantly, she offered her hand. He used his hands and guided hers to his beard.

Not knowing what to say, she quickly commented, “It tickles.”

Again she saw the look in his eyes and knew that she was in for some trouble if she does not think quickly. “Jian, I thought you wanted to know more about me,” she said, pretending to pout and look disappointed while swiftly removing her hand from his grasp.

“We have the whole night still,” he thought, smiling. Then he replied, “I’m sorry my little canary, you go ahead.”

“Ask me a question Jian,” she said sweetly as she pours him another glass.

“How did you wind up in the brothel?” he asked and then took his wine.

“It is a long story. I lived with my uncle and his wife for most of my life,” she began her made up narrative. During her story, she would continue to pick out his food and pour him the wine. “My parents died when I was very little so I cannot remember them. My uncle felt sorry for me and took me in as his own. They also have three children of their own which are younger than me. Everything was going well until just a few months ago, my uncle died, leaving a widow, four children, and a large debt from his business. Of course money was the issue. There was no way to pay off the debt so my aunt planned to escape to the countryside and make a new start there. Since there was no fast way of getting the traveling fee, I figured my own choice was selling myself to the brothel.”

“I’ve never heard of such a situation,” he commented and held Wing Yi’s hand.

“I think I owe them that much,” she said with sadness in her eyes.

“My brave little canary,” he said, stroking her hand.

Wing Yi was surprised at her own acting skill as she continued, “Luckily, the people here are very nice to me, especially Siu Chun.”

At the mention of Siu Chun, his eyebrows furrowed. He commented, “It appears that he is also very fond of you.”

“Of course not,” she denied. “I’m just another brothel girl in their eyes.”

“You are not to me,” he said, bringing up her hand and then kissed it.

    “Really?”

“Yes, I’ve yet to meet anyone like you before.”

“Can you prove it?” she edged him on while formulating an idea in her head.

    “How shall I prove it?”

Pretending to think for a second, Wing Yi finally smiled to signal her decision. Her gaze directed towards the bottles of wine. “I want you to drink three of those wine bottles,” she said, a little unsure if he would actually take up her offer. Seeing his surprised look, she then added and turned towards the window, “Forget I said it, you are not sincere.”

Without a word, he walked over and grabbed one of the wine bottles and resumed his position at the stool. Before Wing Yi even turned around, he had already guzzled half of the content. Smiling to herself, she returned to her previous state and watched him finish the bottle.

“If you can’t finish the last two bottles, don’t force it,” she said with the intent to urge him on.

It was clear that the wine was taking its effect on him. His eyes could barely open as he finished with the second bottle. Wing Yi realized that she needed him to be drunk enough to tell her what she wanted to know but not to the point where he would pass out.

Grabbing the last bottle, she said, “I’m now convinced of your feelings for me.”

He red face looked up at her and smiled crookedly.

Not sure if he was lucid enough, she questioned, “Do you know where you are?”

In a slight slur, he answered, “At the brothel.”

“And what’s my name?” she continued, looking at him.

“Wing Yi, my little canary” he replied with a chuckle as he opened his eyes temporarily.

“Right,” she said. Figuring that it was time to introduce the topic she proceeded to ask, “Jian, have you heard about the famine at Zheung Zhou? I feel so sorry for those people who have to suffer through it.”

It took him a moment but he finally answered, “It is not my fault you know, I wanted to help. I did send them some food.”

“Well of course it is not your fault,” she chimed in. “Nobody wants this to happen as unfortunate as it is. But can you not send more? You are the official after all.”

“Blah…,” he muttered while his head teetered back and forth before finally landing on the table. It seems like he was still saying something, but it was all a slur. Wing Yi shook her head to let Wen Zhuo know that she could not understand him.

In the meantime, three rooms down, Madam Ling awoke from her nap and was thirsty for some water. Just a couple minutes before that Siu Chun had stopped by her room to get the glass of water refilled and bring up the medicine when it was done. As she slowly made way to the door, downstairs, Siu Chun had just emerged from the kitchen. With much effort, she made it to the door and opened it. Out of breath, she leaned against the opened door to catch her breath. Looking down the hall, she spotted a face she remembered seeing before. As she inched up to get a closer look, she suddenly remembered the circumstance when she saw him. Immediately her heart began beating wildly in her chest, and she then began fighting to catch up with her breathing. For a brief second, those piercing eyes turned towards her direction. Suddenly all she saw was darkness as she fainted in her doorway.

Just a few feet away, Siu Chun spotted her lying unconscious in the doorway. Quick to react, he put down his tray of medicine and helped her to the bed. Once she was laid there, she regained some consciousness and called out Wing Yi’s name over and over again.

Back at Wing Yi’s room, she had just used cool jasmine tea in an attempt to wake up the drunk official. To the surprise of both Wing Yi and Wen Zhuo, the official awoke in an agitated state. Stumbling around the room, he blurted out, “Attempts to overthrow the emperor! I shall not! It is he! It is not my fault!”

“He, who?” Wing Yi quickly asked, shook up by the sudden confession. Suddenly the door was knocked down. The official’s guard instantaneously came charging in lightning speed armed with a sword. Before she could blink her eyes, the official fell lifelessly to the floor. The only evidence of anything occurring in that split second was the blood that was dripping from the pointed end of the sword. He was about to make another kill, but he suddenly saw his victim’s stare. It was not fearful, but actually quite the opposite. A look that was too familiar: A look of definance in the face of imminent danger. Her face, the resemblance was too eerily similar.

In that second of hesitation, Wen Zhuo had sprung out of his hiding place. Wing Yi immediately took action and hurled a bottle of wine at the perpetrator. The perpetrator was quick to kick it against the wall, sending small debris scattering across the room.

“I can handle this,” Wen Zhuo said to Wing Yi.

Fearless of the opponent’s weapon, Wen Zhuo advanced. All the meanwhile, Wing Yi dragged the official’s body near the bed and tried to resuscitate him but to no avail. Wen Zhuo’s strategy was trying to disarm the perpetrator while dodging his swift attacks. He managed to get in a good kick to the opponent’s stomach sending him riling back in grimace. Wing Yi saw the situation and knew that the opponent had to be disarmed or Wen Zhuo will not be able to keep up. Looking around the room, she spotted the long wooden pole used for hanging the bed curtains. Quickly she grabbed it and shouted, “Wen Zhuo” and threw it towards him.

In that moment, the opponent saw the opportunity to attack. Wing Yi predicted it and threw the empty bronze water basin at the perpetrator, and thus giving Wen Zhuo the chance to retrieve the staff and counterattack. With the staff in hand, the opponent was no match. With a few rapid moves, Wen Zhou was able to disarm the opponent, sending his sword flying out the window. Without waiting, the perpetrator fled by jumping out the window. Wen Zhuo was about to follow, but Wing Yi pulled him back.

“It is not worth the risk,” she said.

Of course with all the commotion, there were hordes of onlookers. They all stood in the hallway in awe looking through the broken down door. When the perpetrator left the scene, the crowd went up for a closer look and discovered the dead body lying next to the bed in a pool of blood. One of the women screamed when she saw the horrific sight.

Back at Madam Ling’s room, Siu Chun had heard some racket and thought it was the typical noise, but the horrible scream automatically signaled that it was more.

“I’ll be right back,” he told her before dashing off to the scene of the crime. Squeezing his way through the thick crowd, he finally got in and saw what the others had seen. Looking from Wing Yi to Wen Zhuo, he was relieved to find them unharmed.

“How are you guys?” he asked.

“We are fine,” Wing Yi answered for the two of them.

Being that he was in charge of the place, Siu Chun immediately ordered Gia to rush out to find the authorities and told everyone else that business was closing today. “You all should return to your quarters and stay there for tonight,” he commanded. “Once the authorities come, they will clean up the place. If you don’t want any trouble from them, I suggest you get on with your own business.”

With that said, the crowd quickly dispersed. Women whispered to each other as they walk down the hallway to their rooms. Nothing of this magnitude has occurred in the brothel before, so this was definitely a night for all to remember.

    The Fugitives

Once the crowd dissipated, the room plummeted into silence. The three friends stood there, trying to take it all in. Suddenly both Siu Chun and Wing Yi spoke up at the same time, “Ling Mama.”

Tugging on Siu Chun’s arm, Wing Yi anxiously continued, “Where is she? Is she alright?”

“When I left her, she was in her room resting,” he answered but didn’t tell Wing Yi about her fainting at the doorway. “I should go check on her.”

“We should all go see her,” Wing Yi insisted, already making her way into the hallway with the two guys following close behind.

They found Ling Mama struggling restlessly in her bed. Wing Yi quickly came to her side and held her hand while Siu Chun wringed the wet cloth from the water basin. Carefully, he gently laid the cool cloth over her forehead which managed to calm her down whereby she soon fell into a deep slumber.

“She will be alright for the time being,” Siu Chun comforted while helping Wing Yi over to the roundtable. “Gia is on her way with a doctor soon.”

Wen Zhuo spoke up with a somber tone, “I’m sorry for causing all the commotion and trouble and dragging you all into this mess. I had no idea the extent of the situation.”

“None of us could have predicted this,” Siu Chun replied. “There’s no need to say sorry.”

“Siu Chun is right,” Wing Yi agreed, looking at the two guys. “If anything, we all are to blame.” She paused momentarily before resuming, “What’s going to happen now?”

“I can only guess that they will bring in another official from a neighboring town to oversee this,” Siu Chun speculated and turned to Wen Zhuo for affirmation.

“That could be it, but in the meantime they will need to begin the investigation so the official’s counselor might be in charge,” Wen Zhuo added, using information taken from his studies. “And from the looks of it, we might run into some trouble.”

It suddenly dawned on Wing Yi that Enjun could be in danger. “Enjun!” Wing Yi quickly blurted out, eyes fearful. “I have a feeling that something bad might happen to him.”

Wen Zhuo’s eyebrows furrowed as he contemplated. “I think you are right for being worried. The man that murdered the official was after all his guard. And now that he has seen both of us but probably only recognized me, then Enjun and the rest of our team could be in danger.”

Siu Chun added with a concerned voice, “And since you two were found at the scene of the crime, it could be used against you. From experience, I won’t put it past the authorities.”

“You’re right,” Wen Zhuo somberly agreed. “It will be hard to explain how we got involved especially with the whole crossdressing scheme. And being that the official is dead, they will try to find scapegoats to quickly settle the issue. Our position now is not good, and unfortunately what is worst is that we dragged you and the
    brothel into this.”

With a smile, Siu Chun calmly stated, “We’re friends. In this situation, I think you guys should lay low for awhile until this whole incident settles out. And you two should get your friends out of the official’s court as soon as possible.” Looking towards his two friends, he awaited their responses to his suggestion.

Turning to Siu Chun, Wing Yi willfully said, “But we can’t just leave like this, it will not only make us seem guilty but also we can’t just leave you with all this mess. You are the head of this brothel now. If they were to blame you or put you in jail, how could you take care of the business and Ling Mama?” Breathing heavily, she finally stated, “It is too risky.”

“I don’t think we have a choice,” Wen Zhuo said grimly, not looking at her.

“So you agree to this as well?” she questioned in disbelief. “We will be more or less considered to be fugitives and constantly on the run.”

Wen Zhuo remained quiet as Siu Chun spoke up, “Right now, you guys need to think of getting out of danger first. We can deal with the other things when the time comes. Hurry now, you guys don’t have much time to hesitate. I can hold my own ground here so you two don’t have to worry.” Quickly reaching into his pocket he pulled out a small satchel, handed it to Wing Yi and said, “My good luck gift. Now go!” Without waiting for their responses, Siu Chun shoved them out the door.

From the other side of the door, Wing Yi said with tears forming, “Take care.”

Realizing that Enjun could be in peril, the two quickly left the uncommonly quiet brothel. With no moonlight, the two ran towards the official’s court on the dark path. Even though they know the risks of going there, nothing could stop them from rescuing their friend.

Meanwhile at the official’s court, Enjun was quietly sitting at the table in his room with his head propped on his right arm, staring blankly at the flickering candlelight. Suddenly the wooden doors flung open and instantaneously blew out the candlelight. Alarmed, Enjun turned around and opened his mouth to inquire the person’s identity but was immediately silenced by a large hand. Just when he was about to counterattack, the person got close to his left ear and whispered, “It is I, Tao Gong Gong.” With his hand still over Enjun’s mouth, he continued. “I can’t tell you much now, but we have to leave this place immediately.” Without wasting any time gathering their belongings, the two bolted out the door, the darkness concealing them as they made way to the backdoor. Just before they reached the door, the hallway in which they had just passed through was lit. The lights seemed to grow in luminosity as the lanterns got progressively closer. Luckily, the lights reached the door just a few seconds later when the two escapees were already on the other side making their way down the street.

“Turn here,” Enjun said, as he led the way into a narrow alley. With faint visibility, he could make out the sides of the concrete walls but nothing else. Not surprisingly, he soon tripped on a fallen bamboo stick which sent him flying into several overturned straw baskets. With Tao Gong Gong’s help, he hastily fumbled to disentangle himself from the rubbish. The noise apparently caught the attention of two other figures at the other end of the alley.

Wing Yi put a hand on Wen Zhuo’s arm to indicate that they should venture forth regardless of the outcome. It was highly improbable that they were the official’s guards due to the lack of a light source and also evident by their clumsiness to trip and cause the disturbance.

“Probably just a drunk,” Wing Yi thought to herself as she and Wen Zhuo edged on.

Just when Enjun regained his composure, he and Tao Gong Gong froze as they could now faintly hear footsteps heading towards them. Even though Enjun knew some martial arts, he never really got a chance to use it in real life. It seems that no opportunity was more perfect then now to see how much he had really learned all these years from Wen Zhuo. Making use of the bamboo stick that had caused him to trip earlier, Enjun quickly grabbed it and stood in waiting.

Wing Yi saw the weapon from afar and warned Wen Zhuo, “They are armed.”

Wen Zhuo gently pulled Wing Yi behind him as he approached them. Just within striking distance, they froze as well, each side waiting for the other to make the first move. Nearby in one of the straw baskets, a small rat scurried around for food. The noise caused Enjun to swing the stick violently. Wen Zhuo quickly ducked and pushed Wing Yi far back and away from harm’s way. The bamboo moved swiftly and made a melodic sound as Enjun continued to wave it at his opponent. After constantly ducking the strikes, Wen Zhuo recognized the fighting style and was able to counterattack to disarm his opponent.

“Enjun!” he called out just loud enough to be heard.

Wing Yi immediately ran up and stood next to Wen Zhuo with shock and skepticism. In the darkness, they had found each other.

    Destination: Unknown

“Wen Zhuo?” Enjun inquired back, startled with delight. Dropping the stick, he approached his friends. “Thank goodness it is you Master Wen Zhuo,” Tao Gong Gong added with overwhelming relief.

“Yes, it is I,” Wen Zhuo replied with a hint of anxiety. “But what are you two doing here in the alley?”

“There are several guards on our tail, but I’m not sure of the exact reason,” Enjun explained looking anxiously back at the entrance to the alley. “Luckily we got out of the official’s court in time. What about you? And where’s Wing Yi?”

Before either Wen Zhuo or Wing Yi could reply, they all noticed the alley entrance lighting up gradually.

“This way!” Wen Zhuo instructed, immediately leading them out of the alley in the opposite direction of the light. Arriving at the entrance first, Wen Zhuo peaked out to make sure the coast was clear. In the faint light, he quickly spotted another pack of guards headed in the same direction.

“We’re trapped,” he said listlessly. “We need to hide quickly!”

Thinking on impulse, Wing Yi proposed, “The straw crates!”

Just as they were partially concealed, a lantern light lit up the alley.

“Nothing here,” one of the guards reported to his superior. However, just as he was about to leave, a noise aroused his suspicions. The four companions held their breaths as the guard began poking and kicking at the crates near them. Suddenly, a small rat jumped out from one of the overturned crates and startled the guard. Retreating in disgust, he quickly left the alley.

Waiting for a few minutes, Wen Zhuo was the first to emerge from the rubble. “I think we are okay for now but stay down,” he alerted the others before approaching the alley entrance. “Let me quickly check first.”

“I’ll go with you,” Wing Yi volunteered and followed close behind. Both were caught off-guard when just as they looked out into the street, a lady saw them. Even though Wen Zhuo and Wing Yi tried to quickly retreat back into the darkness, the woman was curious and followed.

“What should we do?” Wen Zhuo whispered worriedly. “I don’t want to have to render her unconscious, but if I don’t she might scream and alert the authorities.”

There was a slight pause and then she suggested coolly, “I’ll go and confront her. Since I’m dressed as a girl, she won’t feel threatened and maybe it would be easier to convince her to leave.”

    “Okay, but be careful.”

Wing Yi nodded and made her way confidently out of the alley. Almost immediately the old lady appeared and greeted her with a smile. The lantern in her hand provided sufficient lighting for Wing Yi to see that the old woman was official Yen Li’s wife.

In disbelief, Wing Yi pondered while returned the warming greeting, “Considering that her husband just died, her expression suggested that the news has not yet reached her. But what was she doing out at such a time if she wasn’t looking for someone.” Previous encounters with the old woman revealed that she was kind, but at this moment, it was hard to discern if she was friend or foe.

“What are you doing out and about so late, sweetie?” she inquired of Wing Yi, holding the light up to get a better look.

Smiling sweetly, Wing Yi answered, “I was returning from a friend’s house and got lost.”

“I see,” the old woman replied with a warm smile and grabbed Wing Yi’s left arm. “Come, I can help you get home. It isn’t safe to be out during this time. Come stay at my home for now. If you have any friends with you, I’ll gladly provide temporary housing for them as well.”

“My friends?” Wing Yi retorted with a smile, trying to keep her calm.

“Yes, they are in the alley, no?” she whispered and then blew out her lantern. “I’ll wait here. Be quick child, the guards are still around.”

Although perplexed by her words and action, instinctively Wing Yi knew that this woman could be trusted. She quickly made her way back to the alley to convince the others.

By this time, Enjun and Tao Gong Gong were standing in the dark with Wen Zhuo, eagerly awaiting the results.

“What happened?” Wen Zhuo asked as he places his right hand on her shoulder.

Wing Yi paused for a second before speaking up, “I think she wants to help us.”

“Who is she?” Wen Zhuo inquired with furrowed eyebrows. “Do you know her?”

“She’s official Yen Li’s wife,” Wing Yi stated.

Everyone was taken aback by this revelation.

“Wait, doesn’t official Yen Li want to catch us?” Enjun replied. “This might be a trick. Why would she want to help us?”

“Lots of things have happened since we last saw you two,” Wen Zhuo tried to explain. “Official Yen Li is dead. I feel that something is not quite right about this whole situation. And it is no coincident that you two are being chased after. Nevertheless, there is no time to get into the details of it all. What we need now is to find somewhere safe to hide out and think this over. And even though this might be a trick, I don’t think we have many options right now. By morning the guards will certainly find us.”

Tao Gong Gong finally spoke up, “I think she can be trusted. She was the one that came to warn me to get Master Enjun out of the court.”

“Alright then, I guess if she wanted to harm us she wouldn’t have helped us to begin with,” Enjun declared with some reluctance.

The four companions finally emerged from the dark alley.

“Please show us the way,” Wing Yi said to the old woman.
