Wow! I can't believe you have already finished reading all the chapters. The mystery behind the perpetrator is yet to come. By the way, I have been debating who would end up with Wing Yi. Do you have a preference? Thanx a bunch for spending time reading my fanfic. To get such nice compliments from a professional writer like you is quite an honor. I will update really soon. I hope you will read them and tell me what you think. Thanx!

Fish Guts

Since the incident in the kitchen, the perpetrator seemed to disappear into thin air. Life for Li MaMa and Wing Yi became brighter and more meaningful. Li MaMa instantly became the most beloved cook at the Jasmine Brothel. She had become the head chef in charge of four other cooks.
Ever since the day they came, the brothel became more prosperous. The girls became healthier and livelier, because of all the nutritious dishes Li MaMa prepared for them every day. Madame Ling obviously rewarded Li MaMa appropriately with salary raises very few months.

It has been exactly ten years that had passed that Li MaMa and Wing Yi had stayed at the brothel. Ironically, tomorrow is the much-anticipated Moon Festival. Excitement is in the air and is evident in the bustling crowd selling gifts, lanterns, fireworks, and foods. Everyone is joyous and light-hearted around this time of the year. Even the rich snobs donate to the beggar, and even the beggars had several days off from begging. Shops were open from sunrise to sundown. Shopkeepers work rigorously to keep up with the high demands.

Now, after ten years, Wing Yi has grown up to be a tall and healthy girl of ten years of age. She is somewhat lanky, but her beautiful and soulful eyes make her naturally beautiful. Evidently, she had transition and adapted to her environment with much ease. Her strong eyes scan the street.

“Oh, there it is,” Wing Yi said with a bit of anger. She attempts to balance five gift packages in front of her chest, while quicken her pace.

It was around noontime, but the sun has already begun to descend behind the mountain. Night was coming earlier and brought with it a northerly wind.

“Excuse me sir. Excuse me ma’am,” Wing Yi said as she tried to maneuver around the crowd of people in the street.

A man bumped into her and angrily remarked, “Next time you better watch where you are going little girl. Humph!”

With that said, he stumped off and left poor Wing Yi to pick up the fallen packages. Before she reached for the last package, a wooden cart came into view, and it was going at maximum speed. Wing Yi had not seen it coming, because she was too busy picking up the packages. Suddenly a hand from behind yanked her just in time the wagon approached. The beautifully decorated package in no time turned into a flat mud cake.

“Watch where you’re going!” Siu-Chun waving a fist in the air shouted. “You coulda kill someone!”

Wing Yi stood there silent as tears began to swell in her eyes. Siu-Chun looked her up and down and turned her about to see if she was injured anywhere. He was confused as he pulls her back a little to look at her face.

“What’s wrong now?” Siu-Chun asked her in a deflated tone because he saw that she is unharmed.

All she did in response was to point at the package lying on the ground.

“Oh, that,” he said with a sigh. “Don’t worry, I will replace it.”

By now tears were consistently flowing down her round cheeks. Wing Yi brought up her left dress sleeve to wipe her tears, because she did not want to be a baby and cry in the middle of the street. After collecting herself, she peered up at Siu-Chun, who was a head taller than her. Her teary eyes turned into blazing anger.

“Stay away! It is all your fault!” Wing Yi shouted as she pushed him into the basin of fish guts.

Although only ten, Wing Yi exhibits the strength of an ox as well as the stubbornness of a mule. Even Siu-Chun was fearful of her in her fits of anger.

He landed squarely in the basin. Fish guts in the other containers flew into the air and landed smack dab on his baldhead. His pigtail was immersed in the basin. As he groans in disgust, the fish seller started to yell as she sees all the mess he had created. Siu-Chun was too preoccupied to care what she was blabbering about. He quickly removed the fish intestine hanging on his baldhead, but he gingerly lifts his pigtails from the basin. So many fish scales clung to his braid that there was no point in trying to remove it. When he finally stood up straight, water ran down from his shirt and pants.

Wing Yi could not be angry for too long because seeing him in such a silly predicament turned her anger into laughter. He tried to walk but instantly slipped and landed on his rear end. At first she did try to hold it in, but was unsuccessful. She laughed so hard that tears of anguish transformed into tears of happiness.

“Happy?” Siu-Chun said as he once again gathered himself up.

She stood there holding her stomach and laughing uncontrollably.

By now the people had formed a semicircle around the scene. Men laughed, women pointed, and girls giggled at the sight in front of them. Siu-Chun, only fifteen years old, tries to ease the humiliation by putting on a grin and manly approaching the fish seller to pay for the damages. Seeing as there was nothing left to poke fun of, the crowd dissipated within minutes and got back to their shopping.

“Way to go Siu-Chun!” a young guy said mockingly as he left.

Siu-Chun, who was trying to stay calm and collected, became irate. Surprisingly, Wing Yi took even more offense to the guy’s sarcastic remark than Siu-Chun.

“Only I can laugh at him,” Wing Yi said in a low and menacingly tone, as she picked up a handful of fish gut and propelled it at the guy’s head. With great accuracy, the target landed squarely on the back of his head. He immediately turned around to face them.

“I know you didn’t just do what I think you did,” he stammered.

“I did exactly that,” Wing Yi quickly retorted.

The guy face turned bright red. He hesitated for a moment, but just when he was snapping out of it, Siu-Chun was standing nose to nose with him. Knowing Siu-Chun would win the fight, the guy scrambled away.

“Yeah,” Wing Yi passionately shouted after him. “You run as fast as those toothpick legs can take you, you coward!”

“Now, now,” Siu-Chun said to her, as he places his left hands on her right shoulder to calm her down. “Let’s not provoke a fight at this time of the year. That was a promise I had made last year remember?”

“I know, but still. That guy needs to be taught a lesson, right?” Wing Yi asked with a hint of disappointment in her voice.

Siu-Chun shakes his head and wanting to lighten the mood offered, “How about we go finish the shopping and head home?”

“If you had helped me shop rather than go to the gambling ring, we would not be in this mess,” she said accusingly.

“I promise I won’t go there anymore okay?” Siu-Chun said as he puts up two fingers. “Just don’t tell Momma Ling on me.”

“That’s what you do every time,” Wing Yi said as she began to walk away.

“No really,” Siu-Chun said sympathetically.

“Fine,” Wing Yi finally replied. “Remember that I only said yes so that I won’t get yelled at too.”

Siu-Chun knew that she was no longer angry at him, so he walked beside her with a grin.

The sun is about to set, but the last glimmering rays lighted their paths as they quickly ran from store to store before they closed for the night.

*********************

The New Girl
The sun shone through as Wing Yi got up to open the windows. She rubbed her eyes sleepy, but the excitement and anticipation brought a warm smile on her face. Wing Yi turned around stretching to see that Li MaMa was not sleeping in her bed.
“Li MaMa must have gotten up early to begin cooking the feast for tonight,” Wing Yi thought to herself has she washed her face in the water basin.

After wiping her face with a towel, she perked her ears up to listen for the sweet and tantalizing melody. Strangely, she heard no sound except the clamor going down in the streets.

“He must have been scared off by all the noise,” she pondered as she peered out the window.

If she had thought that the last couple of days had been hectic, it was nothing compared to what she is now witnessing three stories up.

The “he” that she was referring to is a little sparrow. It has become somewhat of a pet but without being locked in a cage. Since spring, the sparrow had been flying to her window every morning at exactly the same time to be feed sunflower seeds. Oddly enough, today the bird was rather late.

“Well, I can’t wait for you today.” Wing Yi said. Before going out, she places a handful of seeds on the window’s ledge.

She is actually quite surprised that Siu-Chun had not yanked her out of bed by now.

“He must be out having fun without me,” she thought to herself as she closed the door.

Just when she turned around, Wing Yi spotted Siu-Chun peaking through the cracks in the door to spy on the new girl that was brought in by her aunt a few days ago.

“The pervert!” Wing Yi whispered to herself.

Siu-Chun is too preoccupied to notice Wing Yi approaching from behind. With a stupid grin on his face, he was in a state of stupor with his romp in midair. Rudely awaken by a hard kick in the romp; he literally flew into the girl’s room. The girl let out a terrifying cry as she pulled the blanket over her head. Even under her blanket, both Siu-Chun and Wing Yi could hear her sobbing.

Siu-Chun turned his eyes away from the girl and directed it at Wing Yi.

“What?” Wing Yi asked apologetically. “Don’t give me that look. It is not my fault that you are such a big pervert.”

“No,” Siu-Chun said weakly. “I was seeing how she was doing, is all.”

“Oh, really now,” Wing Yi said questioningly as she eyed him carefully. “I guess I shouldn’t blame you, since you have no girlfriend.”

“Okay, that’s enough,” Siu-Chun quickly responded. “Besides what do you know? You are too little to understand.”

Hearing the two of them fight back and forth, the girl stopped crying and slowly peaked out of her blanket. Wing Yi noticed and approached the girl. Instead of hiding under the blanket, she scooted farther into the bed. Siu-Chun stood there intently watching. When Wing Yi took a small step forward, the girl would scoot back an inch each time. Getting a closer look at the girl, Wing Yi can see that she was just a little older than her, maybe about twelve or so.

“Hey,” Wing Yi said in an attempt to ease the girl’s tension. “I am Wing Yi. What about you?”

Since there was no more space left to scoot back, Wing Yi knew to stop about a foot away from the bed. She didn’t want to scare the girl anymore than she already is.
Wing Yi stood there and turned her head back towards Siu-Chun. He is still standing there. Sensing her hesitation, he nodded as a sign of approval that she should continue.

“Don’t be afraid, Wing Yi is a girl too even though she appears to be a boy.” Siu-Chun said jokingly.

“Shut up! I am working here,” Wing Yi snapped.

He stood there now with a huge grin pasted on his face with arms crossed in front of his chest.

“Um…anyways,” Wing Yi proceeded. “Don’t be scared, we won’t hurt you.”

The girl finally found the courage to reply, “Um… I am Gia.”

“Hi, there!” Wing Yi exclaimed excitedly.

Wing Yi introduced Siu-Chun as he came to stand next to her, “This is Siu-Chun. He is really harmless but definitely a pervert at heart.” He tries to be gentleman-like by bowing.

The girl managed to giggle a bit.

“Wow, we are late!! Do you guys not know that today is the Moon Festival?” Wing Yi asked with a hint of frustration. “I have to do all my chores, before I get to go to the celebration in the afternoon.”

“You know it is all his fault,” Wing Yi said to Gia.

“Fine, I am sorry,” Siu-Chun said flatly. “Happy?”

“Very,” Wing Yi replies with a smile.

“Every year Siu-Chun and me go to celebration. It is really fun. How about you go with us?” Wing Yi suggested.

“I don’t think I can,” Gia said weakly.

“Oh that,” Wing Yi realized. “Do worry, it won’t be a problem. Be ready at five okay?”

Gia nodded fervently with a big smile on her face.

She led them out and closed the doors.
In the hallway, Wing Yi is about to run off to do her chore when Siu-Chun pulled her back.

“Are you sure Mama Ling will let us take her out?” he inquired. “What if she runs away?”

“Like I said don’t worry about it,” Wing Yi said with a devious smile on her face. “Just be ready to go at five.”

Wing Yi quickly descended the stairs leaving Siu-Chun standing in puzzlement.

Hey Tido,

How are ya?

Just read the latest Chapter.
Umm...Previously I was under the impression that Siu Chun was a sweet innocent boy (He is gambling aswell as being a slight pervert now?)
Hehehe. Like the way you are portraying Wing Yi, a very playful character
One question, is she disguising herself as a boy?

Hahaha. My answer to your question would be entirely bias because Vincent Jiao is one of my favourite actor.
However, I may have to think it through as I have no idea what Vincent character would be like in the story.
I am not a professional writer (although I would like to)

Who is Gia based on?
I do feel great sympathy for her if she is being forced into protitution at a tender age of 12.

Keep updating, you are doing a very good job

When is Vincent going to be introduced into the story?

Hi Hannah!

First off I just wanted to thank you again for reading my story. I am very happy that you like so far.
I will be more than happy to answer any questions you might have.
Um... No Wing Yi is not disguised as a boy, yet. Since she is only 10, the boy/girl distinction is not so important. Siu-Chun like any 15 year old is no less perverted but I made him a gambling addict too. Too Much? Anyways, Gia is just a fictitous character I have created that will be more important later on. So don't pity her too much.(hint, hint)
Wow! I didn't know that you were a Vincent fan too. Well, I really like him, but can you tell that Jordan is my fav? Vincent will appear shortly but don't worry I won't make him too evil.(Just kidding)
Well, I have to get back to writing the next chapter. My sister tells me to extend a message from her to you "PLEASE UPDATE SOON!"
Bye for now.

Hi Jeh!

I am so happy to have another reader. Glad you like the story so far. Yeah, I tried to make Wing Yi playful and carefree as well as good-hearted. I am happy to hear that you guys are growing fond of her.
Thanx for the nice comment on the posters. Which do you like more? I really enjoyed making it so much that sometimes I neglect my writing. Poster making is quite addictive. Well, I used Adobe Photoshop Version 6.0. Are you familiar with this program? I have only started using this program a few weeks ago, so I am still learning all the cool features.
Well, I stop here but just wanted to know that I am so happy to have another reader. Hope to hear from you soon. Are you a writer also? Thanx for commenting.

To answer your inquiry, Um...You were right. I don't know why I also used Wing Yi's mother instead of Madame Yuen or something. Thanx so much for pointing that out. Your feedback was extremely help.
I hope you will still come read and comment. Once again, I am so sorry for not responding. I will try to update soon. Thanx.

Hot as Heck

Wing Yi brakes fast as she approached the kitchen doorway. From the doorway, she could see the people in the kitchen running about.
The hot air quickly reaches Wing Yi’s face. Even the cool weather cannot remove the heat that encompassed the kitchen. The kitchen was exactly like a radiating oven, in which its occupants are sweating profusely.

Li MaMa looked tired just from assisting and directing the other five cooks.

“No. No,” Li Ma said to the cook with the frying pan. “The garlic should be put in first.”

“By this rate, we won’t have it done by eight,” Li MaMa said in a deflated tone, as she wipes her forehead. “Let’s see, there will be at least fifty people, and we need about thirty dishes. How many do we have already Bi?”

“Exactly fifteen done and three on the way.” The cook answered while busily decorating the dishes with flowers and carved vegetable.

The food looked irresistible. The details of Bi’s little food sculptures took meticulous craftsmanship. He gingerly places a fish net made of carrots strings on the fried flounder.

Li MaMa appreciated his attention to details, but she needed him to help cook more than anything. The fifth cook, who was the most efficient, had been sick since yesterday.

“Bi!” Li MaMa shouted over all the noise. “Come over here and help us cook. You can do the decorating later.”
Bi placed the last carrot string on before heading over to the to stove.

Li MaMa smiles weakly and then her eyes caught sight of Wing Yi hovering at the doorway.

“Keep up the good work you guys,” Li MaMa shouted as she takes a break to go over to Wing Yi, who is holding a glass of water in her hands.

“Can I help?” Wing Yi asked as she hands over the glass of chilled, crisp water.

Li MaMa gladly took it and in no time the glass was empty.
Li MaMa gives Wing Yi a peck on the head.

“You’re such a good girl,” Li MaMa said with a smile. “What are you doing here now?”

“I was going to finish all my chores before I…” Wing Yi stopped short of completing her thought.

“Going to the Moon Festival, right?” Li MaMa finished the sentence for her.

Seeing Wing Yi’s puppy eyes on her Li MaMa gives in.

“Okay, okay,” Li MaMa said with a smile. “Who’s going with you?”

“Of course Siu-Chun and…” Wing Yi stopped once more. “Gia?”

“The little girl brought in a few days ago?” Li MaMa questioned. “I doubt if Madame Ling will let you rowdy kids take her out.”

“Please Li MaMa,” Wing Yi begged as she tugs on Li MaMa’s stained apron.

“Oh look who’s coming this way,” Li MaMa said with Wing Yi still clinging on.

Wing Yi turned around to see Madame Ling approaching, swaying her hips right and left with a big smile plastered on her face.

“So how are things in your department?” Madame Ling asked as she bends down to give Wing Yi a quick peck on the head.

“It is going,” Li MaMa said as she turns to look at her hardworking cooks. “Don’t worry I will have it all ready by then.”

“Good,” Madame Ling sang. “What is my darling Wing Yi doing here instead of going to the festival?”
Knowing that Madame Ling loves her dearly, Wing Yi takes the opportunity to express her wishes.

“Mama Ling, can I go to the festival with Siu-Chun and Gia?” Wing Yi said but with a slight mumble at the end. “Please, Please, can we?”

Madame Ling did not let the mumble stop her from hearing the name “Gia.” Her eyebrow raised a bit.

“That’s a good idea,” Li MaMa retorted. “The girl needs some friends, and soon she will learn to cope with the situation.”

Even though Li MaMa is sad with the idea of placing little girls in prostitution, she has to accept reality. At least the girl is not mistreated here.

“That’s not such a bad idea, since I can’t get her to stop crying day in and day out,” Madame Ling said with a slight sympathy hinted in her tone. “Alright, you guys can go but don’t take your eyes off of her. I want you guys back by ten at the latest. Alright?”

“Thank you Mama Ling and Mama Li!” Wing Yi shouted with enthusiasm while jumping up and down. “I’ve done all my chores. Can I go now?”

“Yes,” both Madame Ling and Li MaMa said simultaneously with a smile.

In no time, Wing Yi had disappeared through the doors. The two women stand there and slight giggle.

“I see everything is under control here, so I’ll get back to all the unfinished works that awaits me inside.” Madame Ling finally said.

She is about to go when Li MaMa said, “Madame Ling, can we give the cooks a salary raise or a bonus?”

“I don’t see why not,” Madame Ling said with a smile. “You give it to them and I’ll provide the money.”

Li MaMa gives a knowing nod before Madame Ling made her way inside.

It's me again! Just finish reading your latest chapter. To answer your question, I can't choose between the 2 poster + the new one you just added in. I think I would choose the 1st one because of the background and it show all the main characters. By the way, is the big picture of a girl shown in the 1st poster and 3rd poster Anita or is it someone else.

Hi!
Glad to see you commenting again and answering my questions.
Yes, the big picture is Anita. She looks quite different in it because I used the blurring effect to make her more artsie. But I promise that it is her.
The reason behind my poster madnes(jk) is that I wanted to make the poster fit my chapters. The first poster shows all the main characters. The other two are a little more specific. I want to make more posters but I can't find any pictures of Vincent, Jordan, or Zhao. I even have problems finding Anita pictures that look ancient.
Well,Thanx for dropping by!!

Hey Tido,

Ok, don’t be mad at me, but I couldn’t resist reading your latest chapter in Winglin whilst I was readings others.
Wow! New poster! It’s very nice and it really relate to the recent chapter (Moon festival).
Now I am certained that Madame Ling is a very nice lady, before I had this mixed impression on her.
Wing Yi is definately a very cute child (Umm...I wonder if Li MaMa will teach her any martial arts?).
Hahaha. So...Siu Chun is a gambler. Kinda reminds me of the character Jordan played in DOMD.
I’ll strongly requested she should end up with Vincent (I’m being biased here), but however, I may changed my mind in the near future dued to the fact that I haven’t got a clue on Vince character yet except that his a prince.
Ah....It’s a shame Gia is not a major character in the story, but it would be nice to pair her up with Siu Chun.
Is the story going to be a happy ending or am I going too far with my questions? P
Anywayz, the chapter is enjoyable to read as the many stories I’ve read so far is so sad and tragic! Keep up the great work!!!!

P.S: Could you pass a message to your sister for me please, that my latest chapter is completed and I’m just checking it over at the moment and will have it posted up soon.

Lanterns for Sale

Wing Yi is breathless as she knocks on Siu-Chun’s door.
“Where the heck is he?” Wing Yi thought. “Probably spying again.”

She stands there pondering as to where he might be. Then she hears a giggle coming from Gia’s room. When Wing Yi got there, she spots Siu-Chun sitting opposite of the giggling Gia.

“Hey, guys!” Wing Yi exclaimed as she walks in. “What’s so funny?”

Siu-Chun immediately turned about to face her, while Gia continues to giggle.

“Oh, nothing,” Gia said with a confidant and sweet tone. “Siu-Chun has just told me a funny joke. Are we going now?”

Wing Yi was happy to see Gia not depressed and scared anymore, but her rapid change took Wing Yi by surprise.

“Um…” Wing Yi uttered. “Yeah, we can go now.”

“Great!” Gia exclaimed. “I have never been to a Moon Festival here before.”

“Oh, don’t worry. We’ll show you all the fun stuffs to do,” Wing Yi said with a smile.

The three of them descended the stairway while much anticipation and excitement.

Just as they stepped out, the crowd immediately surrounded them. Lanterns and crafts stands lined the busy street. Little children ran about with little figures made of dough and sugar in one hand and a variety of lanterns in the other. The sounds created by the giggling and laughing children as well as the adults standing around conversing with one another, made hearing the person beside you difficult.

“Let’s go get some stick candies first,” Wing Yi shouted.

“What?” Siu-Chun asked leaning in closer.

“Candies,” Wing Yi shouted back while she points to the left. “Over there.”

Siu-Chun was the tallest so he helps them navigate through. Wing Yi takes hold of Gia’s right hand while Siu-Chun took Wing Yi’s left hand. People bumped into each other constantly, but no one noticed. They finally made it through the crowd to the other side.

“I want three candy sticks,” Siu-Chun said to the candy seller.

“Will that be all?” the candy seller asked politely.

“Siu-Chun, I want that candy stick with the butterfly shape,” Gia said in a pleading tone as she pulls on his shirtsleeve. “Please?”

“I’ll take that too,” Siu-Chun told the man. “Wing Yi, do you want something too?”

“No, I'm good,” Wing Yi replied, while she happily eats her candy stick.

Siu-Chun pays the candy seller and asked them, “Where to now?”

“Um…” Wing Yi answered with a mouthful. “Let’s go to the lake!”

“Don’t we need lanterns first?” Siu-Chun asked.

“Wow! Look at all the pretty lanterns over there,” Gia said as she grabs Siu-Chun’s hand and dragged him over to it. Siu-Chun quickly reaches for Wing Yi’s hand and pulled her along.

“So beautiful,” Gia exclaimed as she picks up one lantern and then the next.

“See anything you like?” the lantern seller happily asked. “We have the most decorative and brightest lanterns around!”

Wing Yi spots a lotus looking lantern on the side of the cart.

“Can I see this one?” Wing Yi asked the lantern seller, who quickly got it down and gave it to her.

“What do guys think?” Wing Yi asked as she holds up the lantern for them to see.

“Oh my gosh!” Gia exclaimed with her eyes glued to the lantern dangling in front of her. “That is so beautiful. The best one yet!”

Wing Yi can see that Gia wanted it badly.

“I got this for you,” Wing Yi said with a warm smile.

“Really? For me?” Gia said as her face beams with excitement.

Gia is totally indulged and stand there with a fixed gaze at her new lantern. Siu-Chun had been selecting some from the cart.

“Wing Yi,” Siu-Chun said as he holds up a dragon fly lantern. “Do you like this one?”

“That’s really cool!” Wing Yi said with big smile. “What are you getting?”

“No, I don’t need one, since both of you will light the way for me.” Siu-Chun said with a sly smile. “Besides, I am too old to be carrying around a frog lantern.”

Sensing the closeness between these two friends, Gia quickly jumps in.

“Let’s go!” she suggested.

“Okay, just let me pay the man first,” Siu-Chun answered as he pulls out his money satchel.

Gia was too busy looking at the jewelry stand beside the lantern cart to notice a group of kids running down the street. One girl accidentally ran into Gia, causing her to fall flat on her rear end. The lotus lantern is found underneath her. Wing Yi rushes over to help her up. The little girl quickly runs off with her group.

“Why don’t you watch were you are going?” Gia shouted in disgust as tears begin to form. “My beautiful lotus lantern.”

“Don’t worry Gia,” Wing Yi said soothingly. “We’ll just get another one.”

“I don’t want another one!” Gia shouted at Wing Yi. “You’re probably happy this happened, right?”

“What?” Wing Yi asked in complete shock.

By now the spectators had formed around the area.

“You wanted it, but I got it,” Gia shouted as her eyes blazed.

“That’s enough,” Siu-Chun said as he steps in front of Wing Yi. “I know you are sad but don’t take it out on Wing Yi. She gave it to you. Don’t you remember?”

Wing Yi was frozen in absolute shock. Her eyes focused on the lotus lantern that lay broken on the ground.

“So?” Gia yelled as tears ran down her cheeks. “She only pretended to be nice.”

From behind Siu-Chun, Wing Yi appears. Without looking at Gia, she hands Siu-Chun the dragon fly lantern and runs off towards the lake.

The Lake

As Wing Yi ran, tears streamed down her face. At least a dozen people bumped into her along the way, but she could care less.
“How could she think I wanted the lantern broken?” Wing thought as she begins to see her surrounding blurred into the noise inside her head. “What did I do wrong? Why does she hate me so much? Could it be my fault?”

All these questions played themselves over and over again in her mind as she races to the pavilion.

By now, everyone has gathered into the town square to have the big celebration. People who were at the lake had left. Wing Yi finds a vacant pavilion, and sat down. Hot tears flowed uncontrollably. Wing Yi placed her legs up to her chest and wrapped her arms around it. She lowers her head to calm herself.

All that is audible are the sounds of crickets and croaking frogs. In the distance, the fireworks can be seen shooting out of the ground. When it reached the sky, it burst into a clutter of different color flowers, so that the sky looked as though fireflies were dancing about.

Wing Yi covers her ears to shut out the world, so she did not hear Siu-Chun approaching.

He stands there for a minute to watch her. Her skinny body is shaking feverishly. From all the times that he can remember, she has never gotten so upset nor cried. Wing Yi was just not that girly type. This total emotional breakdown scared him.

After Wing Yi ran off, Siu-Chun took Gia back to the brothel. Madame Ling was appalled to find the happy trio coming back teary-eyed. Li MaMa immediately asked where Wing Yi was. Siu-Chun said he would go find her, since he knew where she would be.

The lake was a favorite spot that they would often go to get away from the brothel. He remembers teaching her how to fly a kite just beside the lake. They would often go fishing and bring home a few to eat, since fish caught tasted better than fish bought in the stores.

He finally taps her shoulder.

“Just leave me alone please!” Wing Yi said in despair.

Siu-Chun takes a seat in front of her. She is still tucked in the curled position. He did not know what to say. Words were useless. The only thing he knew was to sit there and stare out at the lake with fireworks reflected in the calm waters.

They both sat this way for about thirty minutes. Although by now, Wing Yi had stopped crying, her body was still shaking from head to toe. She finally realized that through all this time Siu-Chun had sat quietly and patiently there with her. Wing Yi’s head slowly rises and her gaze met his.

“Why does she hate me so much?” she asked weakly.

“I don’t know,” Siu-Chun replied in a solemn voice. “We were having so much fun, then all of a sudden this happens. For goodness sake, it is just a stupid lotus lantern! I can buy ten if she wants. Why does it have to come down to ugly remarks?”

Wing Yi shakes her head slowly, as her gazed fixed on a firefly skimming the murky green water.

“Why does a lantern have to get between us?” he continued in disbelief. The whole incident sounded ridiculous.

“I know that you are upset but please come home with me?” Siu-Chun pleaded.

She slowly shakes her head with her body still trembling.

He sees that he could not persuade her so he stands up in front of her. He reaches for her cold trembling hands and held them in his. He pulls her up to stand in front of him.

“Now you listen to me,” he begins. “It is not your fault, you hear? You gave unselfishly for others, but you fail to do so for yourself. She has repaid your friendship with this. Don’t let her get to you. I know you to be stronger than this. You have to learn the harsh truths about life. Kindness will not always be returned. Not everyone is as generous and giving as you. People tend to always have suspicion when someone is nice to them. They are not like you or me.”

Wing Yi looks up at him with a raised eyebrow.

“Okay, maybe not me but you know me well enough to say that although I might gamble from time to time and is a little bit perverted, I have morals.” Siu-Chun responded.

He has never been so serious as he is now. Wing Yi is deeply touched. She leans over to give him a friendly hug.

“I am glad, I still have you, Li MaMa, and Mama Ling.” Wing Yi said while still in the embrace. “Promise me you will always be here?”

“Where else would I go?” he asked jokingly.

The warmth of his body helps to stop her from trembling.

“Come on,” he offered. “Li MaMa will be worried and so will Madame Ling especially since we are not home by ten.”
She smiles and released the embrace. It was now around eleven already.

“Can’t stop making corny jokes can you?” Wing Yi asked jokingly.

He looks at her and asked, “Will you be okay?”

“Why wouldn’t I be? I have you, Li MaMa, and Mama Ling. You guys are all I need, and all I will ever need.” Wing Yi said with a smile.

“Come on,” she said. “I’ll race ya home.”

Hi Hannah!
First off, I am not mad at you. Why would I be? As long as you read it either here or winglin it doesn't matter to me. Just to have you to support my story is more than enough. I actually have to thank you for finding my story so interesting.
Thanx for the compliment on my new postie. I am so happy you see the correlation.
Yeah, Madame Ling is a really sweet lady, but she doesn't want to be seen as such. She has to be tough on the outside because her job demands it. It is great that you think she is good despite her role.
I was planning someone else teaching Wing Yi marital arts instead of Li MaMa. I want Wing Yi to enjoy the carefree years as a child before introducing violence. But don't worry, there will definitely be blood and gore in the near future.
About Siu-Chun, I had inspiration from watching DOMD. That's the first time I really became a Jordan fan. My character is similar but a little more toned down.
Sorry to keep you waiting, but I will introduce Vincent into the story a few more chapters later on.
My story has many twists and turns. One chapter might be light and carefree but the next chapter might be sad. I am glad I can offer an alternative from sad, tragic stories for now anysways.
As for Gia. Well....
Finally, thanx so much for commenting! I always enjoy reading the comments you write since I get so much insight into my reader's mind not to mention great advices. So Please comment again soon. Comments are extremely helpful and enjoyable to read.
P.S. I have delievered your message. I am so happy you finally have time to update. I guess I can speak for all when I say "YaY!!! We want more!"

Hey Tido,

Yet again, I read the latest chapter on Winglin.
It's just the red bg and the yellow font is so striking!
I’m totally gobsmacked!!!
I feel so foolished to assumed Gia was an innocent child, but after the behaviour she put towards Wing Yi, I’m disgusted!!!
I think it’s quite bizzare to have Gia so dramatically change over the hours.
Umm...Siu Chun is so sweet and honest about his personality, now I gonna have a tough time deciding which guy Wing Yi should end up with.
So...When is Vincent coming into the story? (Your eagerling awaiting reader)
Just curious and confused, does Wing Yi think Li MaMa is her mother? Because I remember in one chapter that Madame Ling acknowledged the girls that Wing Yi was Li MaMa’s daughter.
Anywayz, keep up the good work!!!
And thank you for passing on the message for me

Hi Hannah!
Happy to hear from you again.
Reading my chapters at Winglin again I see. I usually post there first before posting here. Does the red bg and yellow font hurt your eyes? I hope not but if it does please tell me so that I can change the colors.
I wanted to asked you what "gobsmacked" means. Is it a good or bad thing?
About Gia, I was so angry at her while I wrote that chapter. I know that it is kinda strange for her to change so quickly but she is the kind of person that appears so innocent and helpless one moment then turn evil the next. She is the type that wants attention and obviously seeing Siu-Chun's attention on Wing Yi definitely fueled her hatred towards Wing Yi. Even though she is poor, she is greedy, always wanting what people have. Ok, I am going to stop here because I am telling too much already. Remember "People are not always what they appear to be."
To answer you question, Wing Yi does not know that Li MaMa is not hers. Madame Ling knows but keeps it a secret. Li MaMa wants to protect Wing Yi. That's why Wing Yi never asked about her mother, because she thinks that Li MaMa is her mother. Sorry I was not so clear on this. Ambiguity?
Well, have second thoughts on pairing Wing Yi? I love Siu-Chun too. He is so cute! but we will just have to see.
Please be patient. Vincent will have his spotlight soon.
Well, this is long enough.
Thanx for reading!!

My term of "gobsmacked" is a good thing
It means astound. I was amazed at the idea of you surprising me with Gia's dark side.

Hi Tido, just been catching up. Remember when you ask me if I was a writer or not? I'm currently working on this fanfic, it's about these 5 girls who travel into the future and meet the love of their life. Do you think I should post my story up for all to see and comment?

Anyway, let's get back on topic shall we?
I was surprise as to how Gia changes I use to like her when she was still shy and scare but now I just want to yell at her so badly.

Hi guys,

I managed to squeeze out another chapter I have to go to sleep now, since I have to wake up bright and early for school.
I hope you guy will like it!

********************
The Departure

It was almost midnight. All the noise from an hour earlier had dissipated and all that is left are the empty streets.
Li MaMa is pacing back and forth in her room. Madame Ling is sitting on the stool with a fixed gaze on the door.

“What’s taking them so long?” Madame Ling inquired quietly.

“You don’t think…” Li MaMa questioned as she stops her pacing to look at Madame Ling.

“Oh, don’t be silly,” Madame Ling reassured her. “They are perfectly alright. Besides he has left ten years ago, why would he be back now?”

Before Li MaMa had a chance to say anything, Wing Yi rushes in with Siu-Chun following close behind.

“Ha!” Wing Yi said breathlessly. “I won!!”

Her excitement quickly died down, when she looks at Li MaMa’s facial expression. Wing Yi knew that she never wanted her staying out pass ten much less twelve in the morning.

Siu-Chun stands there without a word. He knew that Mama Ling was angry at him too. So both Wing Yi and Siu-Chun stood there in silence, until Madame Ling broke the silence.

“Didn’t I say ten?” Madame Ling said with a mix of anxiety and frustration.

“I am sorry,” Wing Yi said with her eyes on the floor.

“No, I am sorry,” Siu-Chun cut in.

“No, it is both your faults,” Li MaMa spoke up, as she came over.

Madame Ling saw the cue and said, “Siu-Chun go to bed.”

Before leaving he turns back to look at Wing Yi. She responded with a slight smile to acknowledge that she was going to be okay. Madame Ling said no further and followed Siu-Chun out. Before she closes the door behind her, Madame Ling gives them one last look and a sad smile before heading to her quarters.

Wing Yi is still standing there motionless. She knows that a simple “sorry” was not going to get her out of this predicament. Li MaMa goes over to her bed and slowly pulls out the sword that Wing Yi’s mother gave to her to give to Wing Yi when the time was right. Wing Yi notices the movement and curiosity lead her eyes from the floor to Li MaMa’s direction. Seeing the sword, Wing Yi is excited, but she tries to not to show it.

Li MaMa is sitting on the bed and is sadly looking at the sword in the sheath. Tears began to tickle down her cheeks and landed on the bed sheets. Wing Yi quickly rushes over.

“Li MaMa,” Wing Yi said worriedly, as she stands beside the bed. “Are you okay? I promise I won’t stay out anymore. Please don’t cry. I promise to be a good little girl.”

Wing Yi has never witness Li MaMa crying before, so Wing Yi is uncertain as how to proceed.

Li MaMa wipes her tears and with her with left hand, she motions Wing Yi to sit opposite of her.

“Wing Yi,” Li MaMa said weakly as she looks at her. “You’re not a little girl anymore. In two more hours, you will be eleven.”

Wing Yi had totally forgotten that today was her birthday.

“I can’t believe Siu-Chun forgot it too,” Wing Yi thought to herself.

Li MaMa stops temporarily to gather her words and begins, “We can’t stay here any longer.”

“Why Li MaMa?” Wing Yi asked in shock. “Is it because of me?”

“No, darling,” Li MaMa said in a deflated tone. “It is I who want to leave.”

“When?” Wing Yi asked, as she looked at Li MaMa for some confirmation. “Where to?”

“We are leaving in an hour,” Li MaMa said. “Where to, I cannot tell you.”

“I’ll get packing,” Wing Yi sadly inquired as she gets off the bed and heads to the closet.

“Wait!” Li MaMa softly exclaimed. “Put these on.”

The clothes that she hands over to Wing Yi were boy’s clothes. Wing Yi is confused but realized that Li MaMa knows what is best for her, and therefore she should not question her.

Wing Yi was finished with her packing and went over to the window and opened it ajar. She stares out the window at the enchanting full moon that looked like the round egg inside a moon cake. The cool wind blew on her face and ruffled her bed sheets. She looks down on the window’s ledge to see that the seeds that she left for him was untouched.

“He’s not leaving me too is he?” Wing Yi pondered with disappointment.

All of a sudden, she hears a distinctive sound becoming more and more audible.

“It’s him!” she smiled. “At least you didn’t forget my birthday.”

He came and perched on the ledge beside her. As she looks on, he busily hacks at the seeds.

Li MaMa had just finished packing and was now coming over to Wing Yi. She gentle pants Wing Yi’s shoulder.

“Ready to go honey?” Li MaMa asked softly.

“Bye Mr. Sparrow,” Wing Yi said to the bird. “You take care of yourself since I won’t be here to feed you anymore.”

The bird looks at her and flew off.

“Wait!” Wing Yi exclaimed.

“Let’s go.” Li MaMa reiterated. “Got all your stuff ready?”

Wing Yi nods slowly while looking at the floor. She then looks up.

“Li MaMa?” Wing Yi asked softly. “Can I see Siu-Chun before we go?”

“No honey,” Li MaMa reassured her. “We can’t let anyone know. Besides, he is sleeping, right?”

Wing Yi gives a weak smile and she places a small paper dragon fly underneath her pillow. The two descend the stairway. Before they headed to the door, both turned around to get one last look at the place that they had called home for the past eleven years.

To make their exit as unnoticeable, they went through the back way. As the moon lit the way, woman and girl vanish into the distant.
