Okay to clear thing up. Well my story is set in the Manchu Dynasty. The posters I make are a bit confusing. <IMG SRC="smilies/confused.gif" border="0"> Finding pictures for my characters is quite difficult. Some of them have not acted in the Manchu era or I cannot find one for them like Vincent. That's why Vincent looks like a Minh king and Zhao looks like a Manchu.
Like I said, my story and now my posters are inaccurate with the time and the story. Sorry about that. Hope this clear things up.

    Another chapter!

    ********************
    The Maze

Just as they exited, the doctor quickly sealed the wooden door back.

The street was dark, save for some lanterns hanging along some of the stores that haven’t be blown out by the wind. Oddly enough, even the beggars were nowhere to be seen.

Walking down the street, the cold wind nipped at them. Wing Yi holds her small satchel to her chest for warmth.

The skinny man noticed her gesture but did not have anything to offer, since he too was lightly clothed.

“We’re almost there,” the man tried to say, teeth clattering. “Here, walk behind me.”

Wing Yi was grateful that he could somewhat block the wind with his skinny body. The two walked in this manner for about twenty minutes, before they reached a tall crenellated fortress.

Wing Yi could barely make out the two men standing on either side. Flame torches in their hands lighted up their rigid faces and rough features. They look like stone statues. Seeing the skinny man and Wing Yi emerge from the dark street, the two grew somewhat alarmed. One of the guards took hold of his long spear in one hand and a torch in the other and walked up to them.

“Stop there,” the tall guard demanded in a low tone.

He looks at the skinny man, eyeing him suspiciously and then gave Wing Yi a quick menacing glance.

“Where do you think you’re going?” he continued to interrogate.

Without a word, the skinny man pulled out a small seal from under his shirt. It was very ornate for something so small, and it looked like gold.

Wing Yi’s gaze fixed on the seal that the skinny man was holding out.

The guard caught one glimpse at the seal and quickly apologizes, “Sorry sir, I didn’t realize.”

The skinny man places the seal back into his shirt and gave the guard a quick motion of the hands. The guard hastily came over to the other guard, who had not twitched a muscle the whole time. In no time, the two guards were able to open the massive gate.

Throughout this whole time, the man only stood there calm and collected. Wing Yi was definitely impressed.

“Who is he?” Wing Yi thought to herself, steadily looking up at the man beside her. “What is the seal? How does Li MaMa know this strange man? This man was definitely not as simple as he seems. ”

The guards came over to usher them in, before resealing the massive stone gates.

Once on the other side of the gates, everything seemed so different. It was like entering another world altogether. The vast space that stretched before them was brightly lit. The building in the far distant was the biggest with long rows of smaller complexes off to the sides. Each door along the side complexes hung a lantern, so that looking at it from Wing Yi’s distance makes they seem like fireflies in the night.

“Where are we?” Wing Yi gasped, out of shear shock and amazement.

“Come along little one,” the man said briefly, scanning the vicinity with an amazed look. “It does look beautiful
    from here doesn’t it?”

“But where are we?” Wing Yi insisted.

“I’ll tell you when we get inside,” the man said with a smile. “Quickly now, it would not be so good to have someone see us wandering around at night.”

Wing Yi nodded with a disappointed look on her face.

“Why is he not answering any of my questions?” Wing Yi thought, following him close behind, as he abruptly turned corners left and right.

“Keep up or you going to get lost,” he said, turning his head back slightly to make sure that she was not lost back at the last corner.

“This is like a maze,” Wing Yi inquired, feeling the dizziness. “Does someone actually live here?”

The man responded with a slight chuckle and said, “Oh, you’ll get to use to it soon enough.”

“What?” Wing Yi breathed out in shock.

Just when the two of them turned the next corner, they ran into another man holding a tray full of fruits. The tray and all the items on it flew into the air and landed all over the ground.

“Sorry Ceuk,” the skinny man apologizes, helping him up.

“Oh, that’s fine,” the man said, picking up the tray.

The man or rather guy seemed to be not much older than Siu-Chun.

“My mistress is so picky,” the guy begins, still gathering up the half-eaten fruits and placing them back on the tray. “This late of the night and she all of a sudden decides to have a little midnight snack.”

Her stomached growled loudly as she helps them pick up the fruits. Even seeing the fruits made Wing Yi hungry. Both man looked up and smiled.

“Who is this little fellow?” the guy asked the skinny man,
as they rose. “Oh, don’t tell me, another recruit?”

He gave Wing Yi a sympathetic grin and continued. “Poor fellow, such a tender age to have to do this. Don’t worry, it heals quickly.”

“Wha….what?” Wing Yi uttered, looking at the guy and then at the skinny man in confusion.

“Oh, he doesn’t know, does he?” the guy said apologetically. “Sorry about that. Well…I have to get to the kitchen and get her some dumplings.”

“Good luck!” the guy said before disappearing around the corner.

The skinny man nods, as he tries to suppress a smile.

    ****************
    Humble Abode

“Here we are!” the skinny man sang out but rather softly, since it was midnight and disturbance is strictly forbidden. “Welcome to my humble abode, young one.”

He stops abruptly in front of one of the doors, which to Wing Yi looks all the same. Once he opened the door, he goes to the round table located smack dab in the middle of room to get a candle. Upon lighting it, the dark room was lit and Wing Yi was amazed.

“Come sit down,” he offered, going to the door to close it.

The room was enormous. It is ten times the size of Li MaMa and her room. Everything looked so orderly and clean. The vases and small statues were perfectly situated in the niches on the shelves. On the round, mahogany table is a small tea set.

After closing the door, he turns around to see Wing Yi staring with bewilderment at the elegance of the room.

“You live here?” Wing Yi asked, slowly sitting down on one of the stool.

“Of course,” the skinny man replied, carefully placing the candle on the table and taking a seat on the opposite end.

He pauses for a minute before continuing.

“I know that everything has happened really fast, but I didn’t have time to explain, but I think now is as good a time as any,” the skinny man spoke in a serious tone. “To start off, my name is Wei Gai. I know from Li MaMa’s letter that your name is Wing Yi, right?”

“Yes sir,” Wing Yi replied cordially.

“Okay, good,” Wei Gai continued, fixing his gaze upon the candle’s steady flame. “I am a very close friend of Li MaMa. I received a letter from her about three months ago. In it, she asked me to do her a big favor. Naturally, I agreed without hesitation.”

“What did she asked of you?” Wing Yi said, looking at the man’s delicate features on his beardless face.

“Well, she told me that she and her little girl needed to relocate, since their current home is no longer suitable for them,” Wei Gai said in a steady voice.

“You know that I am a girl?” Wing Yi jumps in, looking down at the boy clothes she had on.

He nodded and resumed his explanation. “We had planned to meet at the herbal store, so that I could connect her with some of the people I knew. I didn’t realize that she would run into such dire situations. Since she is no longer with us, I want to take you in as my own because I know that she would have wanted you to be taken care of.”

He stops temporarily to pour Wing Yi and himself a cup of green tea.

“Thank you,” Wing Yi responded politely and looks at the steam rising from the cup in her hands. “Sir, I don’t want to burden you. I know Li MaMa only wants the best for me but…”

“Oh, there is not need for that,” Wei Gai interrupted as he places the teapot down. “You will stay here, since I cannot send you back to the Jasmine Brothel. Besides, I see lots of potential for you here. All I ask is that you dress like a boy.”

“You mean I have to wear boys’ clothing the entire time?” Wing Yi asked, evidently shocked.

“I know that is a lot to ask but that is really the only way I can be allowed to keep you here,” Wei Gai tried to explain, now looking at Wing Yi. “Don’t worry, I will teach you everything you need to know to fit in
perfectly. Do you like martial arts?”

“Well, I see people in my town performing in the streets, but I thought girls weren’t suppose to learn martial arts,” Wing Yi said, a bit excited. “You want to teach me martial arts?”

“I don’t see why not?” Wei Gai said with a smile. “Since you will be dressed as a boy, why not take advantage of this fact.”

“Cool!!” Wing Yi said to herself, but loud enough for him to hear. “Then I can defend the weak and fight off the bad guys.”

“Well,” Wei Gai said with sadness in his voice. “My main reason is so that you can defend yourself.”

“You mean like that guy at the herbal store?” Wing Yi asked earnestly.

“I fear that there are more to come,” Wei Gai inquired as his eyebrows furrowed.

“Who was that guy and why did he want to kill us?” Wing Yi continued, taking advantage of the situation.

“I am not sure why, but I have a vague idea,” Wei Gai remarked with an uncertain tone. “Well, it is better that some things be left alone.”

“That what’s wrong with adults,” Wing Yi thought to herself. “They never tell the kid anything.”

“Alright, I think that enough explanation for one night,” Wei Gai remarked with a smile, obviously trying to divert Wing Yi’s attention. “I have to go inside and make up your bed so feel free to look around since this well be your home from now on.”

“Um…alright thanks,” Wing Yi politely but hesitantly replied.

Wei Gai went over to light another candle before heading into the room, leaving Wing Yi standing there in confused bewilderment. She tried to examine everything. Her room is to the left side while his room was farther into the right side. Oddly enough, his room is the same size as hers. The room was definitely elegant but it was nowhere near her cozy room that she shared with Li MaMa at the brothel. The room seemed empty somehow even with all the lavish decorations.

“Alright come in,” Wei Gai said as he emerged from the room. “The bathroom located in the back. If you need anything, don’t hesitate to ask. You can go anywhere in here, but just don’t go outside without letting me know. People around here are not too fond of kids running about. Well, tomorrow I will fill you in on all the ground rules, but for now you should go to bed. All see you bright and early tomorrow.”

“Thank you sir,” Wing Yi said with a sad smile.

“Don’t worry,” Wei Gai tries to comfort her. “You will get to use to it. Good night.”

He gives Wing Yi the candle in his hands, and she slowly walks into her new room. Wei Gai went over to the table and got the other candle and made his way to his own room.
As Wing Yi stalks into her room, the candlelight slowly reveals the room to her. The bed is twice the size of her old one and the bed covers were neatly tucked under so no wrinkles were visible. Even the pillow is decorated with elaborate embroidered designs. Off to the right corner, is a small desk with two wooden stools.

Wing Yi goes over to the desk, places the candle and satchel on it. She makes her way to the bed and pulls out the bed covers before going back to blow out the candle. As she lies in her big, luxurious bed, Wing Yi closes her eyes but could not sleep. Thoughts came rushing in. Images of Li MaMa, Hai Bu, Siu-Chun, and Madame Ling dominated her thoughts.

“I hope Hai Bu is getting better,” Wing Yi thought.

Then her mind is overtaken suddenly by the images of Li MaMa busily cooking in the kitchen and Madame Ling swaying her hips and waving her handkerchief. Before finally dozing off, Wing Yi sees an image of Siu-Chun teaching her to fly the kite down at the lake. The sun was shining, the clouds looked like cotton candy, and the breeze was perfect for the occasion.

    ****************
    The Fever

“Li MaMa!! No!!!” screamed Wing Yi, jotting out of her sleep with beads of salty sweat lining her forehead.

Wing Yi found herself staring into darkness.

It was already sunrise, but the room was so dark no sunlight could get in. Her skinny body was shaking feverishly underneath the covers. Everything around her seemed to be spinning. She tries to get out of the bed but falls onto the floor, before she could make her way to the table.

Luckily Wei Gai, who had just come back from the kitchen with a tray of food, heard Wing Yi. He immediately placed the food tray on the table and burst into her room. Once her bedroom door was opened, the light revealed Wing Yi lying on the ground, shaking uncontrollably.

“Wing Yi!” Wei Gai shouted out as he quickly rushes over to pick her up.

Even though he is an extremely skinny man, his strength easily allowed him to pick her burning body up. He carefully lays her back on the bed and tucks the covers neatly around her but left her right hand hanging out for him to check her pulse.

“Her pulse is beating irregularly,” Wei Gai thought to himself, tucking her arm back underneath the covers. “No doubt is it the fever.”

Bring a hand to her forehead; he could feel that she was burning up. Wei Gai was obviously worried, since he had never taken care of a child before and was unsure as to how to proceed accordingly. With much anxiety, he went to fetch a cold basin of water and a cloth rag from the bathroom.

Once he got back, he found Wing Yi tossing and turning underneath the layers of blankets.

“Li MaMa….Li MaMa,” Wing Yi kept repeating in her delirium.
While Wei Gai carries the basin over, the water splashed over the sides and spilled onto the floor.

After much struggling, Wei Gai was finally able to force a few spoonful of herbal medicine into her mouth. He then applied the cold cloth on Wing Yi’s forehead as he sat on a wooden stool beside her bed. Every few minutes, he would have to change the warm rag. After the rag was placed several times, Wing Yi calmed down considerably and began to doze off.

Throughout the whole time, Wei Gai had proceeded without a word.

“Sleep little one,” he said softly, leaning on the side of the bedpost. “You have been through so much already. Rest now.”

Wing Yi’s temperature gradually returned to normal, as morning turned into afternoon.

The tray of dim sum on the table was left uneaten. As for Wei Gai, he had errands to run that day but held it off to stay by her side. He knew that he would raise her as well as if she was with Li MaMa. Besides that fact, he was growing quite fond of her.

Eventually the exhaustion caused him to doze off by early afternoon.

Around two in the afternoon, Wing Yi awoke. Her eyelashes slowly rose and fell, as she focuses her eyes to the bright sunlight. It warmed her cheeks, landing directly on her face. At first, her vision was a little blurry, but as she slowly sits up, her eyes focused on Wei Gai, with his head on the bedpost, sleeping soundly.

The cloth on her forehead, now dried, fell to the floor as she sat up straight, still feeling groggy and lightheaded.
Hearing her stir, he quickly woke up thinking that something was wrong.

“How do you feel?” Wei Gai asked, as he takes her pulse.

“Okay, I think,” Wing Yi replied, still unsure of what had happen the past six hours. “A little dizzy is all. I’ll be fine.”

She pauses before beginning, “Um…I just want to thank you…”

“There’s no need,” Wei Gai tries to explain. “It is only right that I take good care of Li MaMa’s child for her. Besides, I still need a student to teach martial arts.”

They both had a weird moment there, since both did not know how to proceed without the conversation getting all
    corny.

“Thank you again, sir for taking me in,” Wing Yi initiated, genuinely smiling.

“With all the commotion, I did not have a chance to tell you the ground rules,” Wei Gai said with a smile. “First and foremost, you should call me Gai Gong Gong.”

“Oh, I understand Gai Gong Gong,” Wing Yi said with a hint of sarcasm and a giggle.

“Oh, you are breaking the second rule already,” he persisted. “No giggling, that’s for girls and remember that you are suppose to be a boy, right?”

“Yes, Gai Gong Gong,” Wing Yi said, nodding her head fervently.

“Okay, don’t smile too soon, because there are 303 more rules you have to know,” Gai Gong Gong said in a matter-of-fact tone.

Wing Yi’s jaw fell wide open, when he said it.

“I think I am sick,” Wing Yi said in a deflated tone.
Seeing the childlike expression on her face, Gai Gong Gong gives in.

“Alright, since you are just recovering from a fever,” he begins, trying to sound tough. “I guess the 305 rules will have to wait for another day.”

Seeing Wing Yi face light up, he added, “I expect all 305 rules to be memorized in a month’s time. Everyday you will have to learn 25, and I will quiz you every night.”

“What if I don’t get them right?” Wing Yi asked with a hint of fear in her voice.

“Oh, you’ll find out when you get one wrong,” Gai Gong Gong said, before leaving the room. “Well, wash up and join me outside for some supper.”

    **************************
    Rules of Etiquette

After washing her face in the lukewarm water, Wing Yi stops to look down at her reflection in the basin.
“Li MaMa, was right,” she said to herself. “I am no longer a child. I have to be strong.”

A bright smile was on her face as she goes out to join Gai Gong Gong. Just as she opens her door, the fragrance of the food immediately reaches her nose. It was like nothing she had smelled before but in a good way.

Her stomach gave a loud grumble as she proceeded to the table. She looks around but could not find Gai Gong Gong anywhere. In no time, the alluring smell of the food set on the table distracted her thoughts.

Her eyes were glued to the steaming shrimp dumplings, arranged on the plate with ornate garishes. Gai Gong Gong entered the room with another mouth-watering dish in his hands just, as Wing Yi was about to pick up one of the dumplings.

“Ahh..ha!” Gai Gong Gong said loudly. “A food-napper!”

Wing Yi was too hungry to care, putting the whole dumpling
    into her mouth.

With a full mouth, she uttered, “Sorry.”

He shakes his head and goes over to put the plate on the table.

“You are more like a boy than I thought,” Gai Gong Gong said in defeated tone. “I guess I have more work on my plate than I had originally anticipated.”

After gulping down the last piece, Wing Yi lets out a sigh of satisfaction.

“Okay now,” he continued with a slight smile on his face. “Sit down and eat properly.”

Wing Yi quickly takes a seat on the nearest stool, knowing that she might be punished.

She sits with hands folded in her lap, looking down guiltily.

Gai Gong Gong lets out an exasperated sigh before saying, “I think now is as good a time as any for me to teach you the etiquette of proper eating.”

He looks at her, “Go on. Eat. I will correct you as we go along.”

Wing Yi reaches for the chopsticks and holds in up, while eyeing the dish of roasted duck that gleamed of oil.
Just as she is about to reach for one of the juicy legs, Gai Gong Gong stops her in mid-air.

“Wait!” he quickly intercepted. “We do not use our chopsticks to get the food. That’s why we have these.”

He holds up another pair of chopsticks, the only difference being that these were red. Wing Yi eyes him questioningly.

“With these you pick up the food,” he continued in a systemic way. “They go here, when you are not using them.”

Wing Yi had not noticed that next to her bowl was a ceramic fish figure.

“So that’s what, that’s for,” Wing Yi said in amazement.

Now afraid to make any wrong move, Wing Yi waits for him to begin eating so that she can follow exactly. He slowly picks up his tea and likewise she performs the same motions. This was actually the first time she had drunk green tea. Not realizing what she was sipping, Wing Yi makes a noticeable cringe and quickly places it down.

Gai Gong Gong saw her facial expression and added, “Don’t worry. After a few more cups, you’ll get use to it.
Today, I made it slightly more concentrated.”

“Oh,” Wing Yi managed to utter, trying to swallow it down.

“Here, have some sweet pork,” he offered, using the red chopsticks. “This is my favorite dish.”

Wing Yi could remember Li MaMa’s sweet porks, especially how they were sweet with a hint of sour to them.

“Li MaMa makes the best sweet porks,” Wing Yi said with her mouth full.

“I know, she used to make them for me,” he sadly reminisced, staring at the sweet pork dish.

To divert the attention he remarked, “No talking while chewing. People don’t want to see your half chewed pieces lobbing around.”

“Sorry,” Wing Yi said with genuine guilt.

She begins to chew with eyes that had lost its gleaming quality. The food lost its effect, and now it seems to be merely tree bark.

“She is only a child,” Gai Gong Gong thought to himself as he looks at her. “Maybe I should give her more time to transition and not force it on her too quickly.”

“Alright,” he spoke up. “Enough with the long face. No more rules for today. We both have to finish the food before it gets cold.”

“Does that mean I can eat regularly?” Wing Yi asked, excitement in her eyes.

“Yes,” he responded with a reluctant nod.

In no time the plates on the table were almost empty. He, by himself, has never eaten so much in one sitting. Wing Yi on the other hand feasted on everything she could find. The shark-fin soup was sipped dry and even some of the garish were eaten.

By the time they finished, the entire table was an entire mess. Plates were stacked on top of each other to give more room. Pieces of food stained the white tablecloth. All and all, the table looked like a disaster area.

Gai Gong Gong sits back, watching Wing Yi finish off the rest of the stir-fried noodles.

Wing Yi slurps up the last dangling piece, before leaning back with a big smile on her face.

“This is the best dinner ever!” she remarked, rubbing her stomach. “I feel like I am about to explode!”

“Okay, let’s clean up this mess,” Gai Gong Gong insisted, slowly rising out of his stool.

“Put all the dishes into the tray over there, while I try to clean off all the grease from my white, embroidered tablecloth.”

Surprisingly, Wing Yi performs her task both quickly and efficiently. To his surprise, Gai Gong Gong returns to find the disaster area clean and spotless.

Wing Yi sits on the couch-like chair eagerly waiting.
Seeing him, she bounded up and came over to the table.

“Gai Gong Gong?” Wing Yi begins. “When are you going to teach me martial arts?”

“How about tonight?” he offered. “I had figured to start teach tomorrow but since you are so eager, I think we can start tonight.”
