I always thought it was because Ma Yuk was the eldest and because Ma and his wife, Sheun But Yee, were the first to be recruited by Wong Chung Yeung and because they had donated a huge amount of money and land to build the Chung Yeung Temple.

That was just ZBT's explanation (though he may be wrong, given ZBT is not to be 100% trusted, ever). Well, he didn't specifically state it but alluded to that WCY disliked QCY and liked Ma Yu because he was able to use the Taoist philosophies much better.

The natural assumption would be that the the eldest would assume the role of the Leader, but it is not always the case. Just look at the 3rd generation of QZ disciples.

Ma Yuk was definitely a nicer guy; Yau Chui Gei (at least in LOCH, though not necessarily historically) was an utter d*ckweed sometimes.

There were five people who competed in the first Mount Hua battle. The prize for winning the competition was the Nine Yin manual. So they were all there to win the manual so that they could expand their skills and not for charity. We know that at least Ouyang Feng and Huang Yaoshi wanted to learn the skills. Ouyang Feng openly attacked Quanzhen to get the manual. Huang Yaoshi tricked Zhou Botong to get the manual. They both wanted to learn the skills from the manual. To them it was not about what the world would think and if they would be criticized. I suspect the fact that since Southern Emperor and Hong Qigong were there, they also wanted to learn the skills from the manual.
Consider this, though: both Au Yeung Fung and Wong Yerk See were not known to be scrupulous about their methods (ESPECIALLY not Au Yeung Fung), but Wong Chung Yeung, Hung 7 Gung, and Deun Chi Hing/1 Deng were. Honor and integrity didn't necessarily mean much to Au Yeung Fung and Wong Yerk See, but the same cannot be said of Wong Chung Yeung, Hung 7 Gung, and Deun Chi Hing/1 Deng. In fact, Wong Chung Yeung was notoriously uptight about such things.

I wish Jin Yong would have cleared up why someone with access to a kung fu like 6 Mai Shen Jian would even need 9 Ying.

To build up the inner power reserve necessary to drive the 6 Mak Divine Swords?

This would seriously upgrade the strength of his school from leaps and bounds and bring it to a whole new level and leave them capable of defending and protecting the Nine Yin manual and also Quanzhen sect overall.
I think WCY's idea of bringing the sect to a whole new level is different from yours.

He wanted all of his disciples to be the forerunners the leaders not in martial arts or political movement or revolutionary reaction, but in shining examples of love and sacrifice.
