Chapter 8 – Exile and Reunion

Ngao Yang Fei had a secret clearing at the bottom of the cliff where he lived and practiced martial arts. Xi Ping and Lei Gwan were now under self-exile. They cannot return because they can no longer trust grandmaster Jin; furthermore, Xi Ping cannot return to Coral since he accepted another master without his previous master’s consent. Ngao Yang Fei taught both Lei Gwan and Xi Ping martial arts even though he only accepted Xi Ping as a disciple. He had only one hand-to-hand style to teach. The techniques in the style were very hard and contained no soft techniques. The style that he taught was dragon claws. There were three basic types of claw techniques in Jiang Hu. The tiger claw used five fingers spread apart and curled as its basis. Eagle claw uses three. Dragon claw has the user place their four fingers together with the thumb apart to form a C shape when viewed from the side. Due to the supporting features of the four fingers, the dragon claw technique was the most stable of the three.

Ngao Yang Fei hobbled when he walked but he showed tremendous dexterity and agility in performing his techniques. He incorporated a stance into his dragon claw style to withstand the Flight of the Heavenly Fairies. Flight of the Heavenly Fairies cannot be parried or evaded, but that does not mean that it must cause harm. The practitioner of the dragon claws style can utilize any weapon and attack the opponent using a stance called Dragon’s Dive. When these two stances clash, the user of Flight of the Heavenly Fairies must strain his or her internal energy just to evade injury. So in theory, this should prevent injury to the fighter using Dragon’s Dive because his opponent must scramble to prevent himself/herself from getting injured.

After a couple weeks, Xi Ping and Lei Gwan learned the external techniques of the dragon claw style. They lacked the internal strength to develop its full potential but Ngao Yang Fei was pleased and said “Now that I have passed on my martial arts, I can die in peace.”

This surprised Lei Gwan and Xi Ping.

Ngao Yang Fei continued “I have committed many sins in my life when following the Yuansun. I have received retribution for my crimes and can accept death in peace. I hope that you two will be able to do great deeds. There is no redemption for me but there is still hope for you, Xi Ping. Leave here and good luck to you.”

Ngao Yang Fei went into deep meditation and did not stir. He was waiting for death. Lei Gwan and Xi Ping respectfully bowed to the senior and left the secluded clearing and headed towards an escarpment.

It was night when they ascended the escarpment. The hunter’s moon shone brightly causing Xi Ping to speak his mind “Which is closer, the moon or Japan? I can see the moon but I could not see Japan so the moon must be closer. Then again, I have seen people from Japan but I haven’t seen anyone from the moon so Japan must be closer.”

“It doesn’t matter. Everyone shares the same moon. Be it the poor or the rich. Be it Japanese or Chinese.”

    “And the blind?”

“The blind may still feel its presence. The blind may feel its gentle rays in the night.”

They continued to walk and recognized two figures sitting together watching the scenery. The two were Hua Yu and Lei Fa. Xi Ping saw this and looked away. Lei Gwan saw this and got angry. She drew her sword, charged forward, and attacked Lei Fa. Hua Yu and Lei Fa were taken by surprise but their defensive capabilities against weapons allowed them to parry the attack. Lei Fa knew that she could not break the defensive shell of the turtle branch with her sword techniques so she struck forward with her newly learned dragon claw technique. Lei Fa and Hua Yu were taken by surprise at the sudden increase in the ability of their opponent and the defense was breached. A turtle’s shell may be hard, but a turtle’s flesh is quite soft once its shell is broken. Lei Gwan placed her sword on Lei Fa’s throat. Xi Ping reached Lei Gwan and stood there not knowing what to do. Hua Yu and Lei Fa recognized Xi Ping but could not recognize Lei Gwan since she no longer dressed as a male soldier.

Lei Gwan looked at Lei Fa and demanded “Renounce your feelings for Hua Yu.”

Lei Fa stared blankly at Lei Gwan. Xi Ping intervened and said “Lei Gwan, what are you doing?”

“You are always hiding your feelings; nobody has any idea of what you are thinking.”

Xi Ping chuckled before reaching forward to grab the blade. He did not wish to harm Lei Gwan and nor did he want to embarrass Lei Fa. Lei Gwan dropped the blade before Xi Ping could cut his hand then gave Xi Ping an angry glance. Hua Yu broke the silence “Xi Ping! Lei Gwan! Let’s return to camp.”

“I can’t, I have betrayed master Gwae, my brothers, sister, and Coral.”

“What are you talking about? Come on, there are only us.”

Xi Ping and Lei Gwan followed them to a camp fire in the middle of a clearing near a cliff. They saw Chok To seated there heating up tea. Xi Ping called out “Brother, you are alive!”

Chok To turned around and laughed. He was joyous at meeting his younger sworn brother again. He said “You thought I was dead? No surprise considering the injuries I sustained from that traitor Kwok Da Kong. Good thing you were able to hold your own against him otherwise we would be keeping each other company at the funeral. Who would have thought that the sword meant to kill me actually cured me of a strange ailment. You see, I had a strange lump on my back that seemed to slowly grow larger. It was starting to get a bit painful but it got cut out by the sword.”

Xi Ping guiltily replied “Actually, I stabbed you in the back.”

“Now that we are reunited – you did what?”

“I overheard your conversation with the Heavenly Rain sect leader and thought that you were trying to poison me.”

“Oh that. I wouldn’t be surprised since I thought he was trying to get me to poison you too. He basically whispered to me that he could tell that you had traces of poison in you and wanted me to give you the antidote. He suspected you would be too prideful to accept it in the open. I didn’t believe that the packet contained medicine so I tried some of it. He told me to stop and said that I almost overdosed before he bounded off to chase an intruder. I decided to use a tea kettle that had a knob that way I would not overdose when drinking tea with you. Stabbing me in the back, where’s your honour.”

    “How is your wound?”

“It has healed quite quickly. Hey, even Lei Gwan is here. Xi Ping and I have joined the skewered club. Anyone else like to join?”

The five of them laughed and began their rest for the night. When the moon was highest in the night sky, they were awakened and saw a group of mysterious beings in dark blue whose clothing sparkled under the moonlight. When together, they looked like the ocean reflecting the moon. Chok To exclaimed “It’s the Lunar Reflection.”

They bounded after them until they reached the edge of a very short cliff. The cliff was very steep but a person with martial arts could easily jump down. There the members of the Lunar Reflection paused and watched. They crept up to the cliff and saw Ji Beet Sing walking towards Jin Xiao Bing. Jin Xiao Bing spoke first “Now that there are witnesses, I must expose your crimes. Ji Beet Sing I have evidence of your associations with the Wo’ Kou. Your plan to retrieve their riches in return for general Qi’s head is foiled.”

    “Rubbish.”

“Are these letters rubbish? I’m sure that you will fail since at least one of those 1900 PoW’s from general Qi’s brilliant victory at Taizhou will reveal your motives.”

With that, Jin Xiao Bing threw the papers up. While attempting to catch it, Loe Chok To stumbled and fell. He was not injured but was at the foot of the cliff among the two most fierce tigers of Wulin.

Mo Xiao Fong asked “Chok To, are you alright?”

Chok To replied “Yeah. These letters are fake!”

“Of course, mister Jin wanted to anger gentlemen Ji. Come back up here, it’s not safe down there.”

Jin Xiao Bing said “Chok To, I have information regarding your brother’s parents. Stay there and I will tell you once I’ve dealt with hypocrite Ji.”

Ji Beet Sing sighed “Who are you? And how did you know about my incident with Ngao Yang Fei?”

“Oh, you mean your inability to beat him?”

    “And you could?”

“Yes, he escaped but is now a cripple if not already dead.”

“Impossible. I doubt that the leaders of E’mei, Wudang, and Shaolin combined can beat him.”

“Those three combined would definitely defeat you.”

“Correction, I can’t beat them if they decided for some bizarre reason to attack me together. That does not mean I would be defeated.”

“You came here without any of your followers. Are you not afraid to die?”

“Good prevails over evil. You must be complaining of your long life. In all of Jiang Hu, who does not respect the name Ji Beet Sing? You wish to engage in a dual with me? You do not have the status.”

“I defeated the only person you could not, there is my status.”

    “Your proof?”

“Which claw technique is stronger? Eagle or Dragon? It must have been Dragon.”

“You dare to mock me? Indeed, you have fought Ngao Yang Fei. Is it a dual that you want?”

    “Correct.”

“Very well. Members of Coral, listen well, I do not want any of your help; I will handle this villain by myself.”

The sea breeze was cool. The ocean waves crept up on shore and retreated in an ever eternal pattern. This serenity was overshadowed by the tension of combat. Facing each other were the two top martial artists of Jiang Hu. To the victor goes the spoils.

    Chapter 9 – Enlightenment

Ji Beet Sing made the first move. He struck with a flurry of attacks; each performed with perfect execution. He did not use a weapon; his body was the best weapon he had. Jin Xiao Bing defended by using techniques that appeared like no technique. Ji Beet Sing replied “Wudang! So you are not Japanese afterall.”

Jin Xiao Bing did not reply, instead he saved his breath to disengage and sheath his sword. He unsheathed his sword at a speed such that the spectators could only see the flash of the sword after it hit the target. The slash went across Ji Beet Sing’s face with a clear ringing sound yet there was no sign of injury. Ji Beet Sing laughed “Few live to tell of my secret.”

“Iron Skin, impressive but every practitioner has a weak point somewhere on their body.”

Jin Xiao Bing sheathed his sword again and performed Flight of the Heavenly Fairies. The stance was spectacular. He seemed to fade from existence and become one with his sword. The sword struck all its intended targets, every location that Jin Xiao Bing sacrificed became a target on Ji Beet Sing. Most practitioners of iron skin cannot shield their eyes, tongue, or castration point from injury yet Ji Beet Sing came out unscathed. He exclaimed “Flight of the Heavenly Fairies! Too little, too late though. Hmm… I thought that the hunting dogs were exterminated.”

Ji Beet Sing, hoped to anger Jin Xiao Bing. Most martial arts demand that the pugilist control his/her feelings. Ji Beet Sing did not realize that demon hunters gain power through their emotions. Jin Xiao Bing growled “Satisfaction shall be mine.”

“The demon hunters left us no choice. Surrender now before I use my full power.”

Jin Xiao Bing ignored his opponent and thrust his sword forward. Ji Beet Sing let the sword hit his throat while simultaneously striking forward with both his palms. Jin Xiao Bing’s sword bent and he was struck in the chest. He utilized the Wudang Tai Chi principle of soft overcoming hard to transfer the power vertically down, up, and back to Ji Beet Sing.

Ji Beet Sing felt his power returned to him, he redirected the energy into the blade and shattered Jin Xiao Bing’s sword. Jin Xiao Bing gave a roar indicating that he was entering temporary qi. Ji Beet Sing attacked first using the Eagle Claw technique to prevent the redirection of his force from Tai Chi. Jin Xiao Bing threw a direct punch with both fists and reached his target first. Such direct power required Ji Beet Sing to focus all his energy to prevent injury halting him from finishing his attack. Jin Xiao Bing turned his fists and cocked his wrists after being repelled by Ji Beet Sing. This sprayed black oil onto the face of Ji Beet Sing. The black oil lit on fire as soon as it touched the face of Ji Beet Sing. Jin Xiao Bing finished by releasing two sharp black blades into Ji Beet Sing’s chest. With his energy distracted by the inferno, Ji Beet Sing could not prevent those rare blades from entering his body. He fell in a blaze, never to stand again.

Jin Xiao Bing recovered his breath and spoke “Xi Ping, you have discovered my secrets and hence hid from me. I offer you great power and a chance to rule Wulin. Are you sure you want to give this up? Have it your way. I will not have my efforts go to waste, come down or watch Chok To here die.”

Chok To regretted his stupidity in remaining at the bottom of the cliff. He tried to get away but Jin Xiao Bing threw one of the black blades used to kill Ji Beet Sing into Chok To’s leg pinning him to the cliff wall. Lunar Reflection members numbering in the tens prepared to jump down to save Loe Chok To. Jin Xiao Bing looked up with his blank eyes and sighed “One man cannot beat many.”

He clapped his hands and an army of black clothed fighters appeared. They seemed completely loyal to Jin Xiao Bing. Three Lunar Reflection members lightly touched down on the ground near Jin Xiao Bing. The fighters in black performed expulsion causing two of the Lunar Reflection members to collapse and become breathless. The third member had qi that was refined enough to avoid this but she was forced to scramble back up the cliff to prevent herself from getting swarmed. This pugilist was Mo Xiao Fong, the leader of Coral. This was a stalemate. Lunar Reflection was no match on flat ground against the army of Yuansun trained fighters with expulsion. The fighters dared not scale the cliffs because that would make them vulnerable to attack from top martial artists. The Lunar Reflection members looked at Xi Ping and said “If you go down there, you will be expelled from Coral and we will hunt you down. He will turn you into the most powerful and ruthless fighter in Wulin and from what we see, Coral cannot be a match for this force. We must not allow this. He is nearing the end of his natural life and will not be able to keep this army of his unified.”

Hua Yu jumped down from the cliff and said “Xi Ping stay there.”

He reached Chok To and removed the sword before throwing Chok To’s chain whip upwards. The Lunar Reflection members pulled up sending Chok To and Hua Yu towards safety. The fighters in black reacted and performed expulsion on them. Chok To had the chain whip tied to him but Hua Yu did not. Hua Yu fell back down and was surrounded. Lei Fa moved forward to jump in but was stopped by the Lunar Reflection members. Lei Fa was flustered as she watched the fighters sadistically advancing towards Hua Yu. Xi Ping appeared completely calm as if he did not care during the unfolding of these events. The Lunar Reflection members were surprised to see him suddenly move and leap into the carnage. Several darts flew out striking several of the members in black down.

They tried to perform expulsion which, as expected, failed. Jin Xiao Bing moved forward and commanded “Xi Ping, you hate what I have done and you are extremely angry. All you want is to see my blood, let your instincts run. I can feel the power in you. Let it out and take your place in Wulin. Trust your feelings and strike.”

“You are correct that I am angry and hateful. But you are mistaken about one thing. My feelings are not towards you but towards the situation. My feelings towards you are much different. I feel pity towards you; pity for the boredom and dreariness of your life. Let Hua Yu go and I will begin my ascension and achieve the final stage of our society’s martial arts.”

“Hmm… if Da Kong was correct, Hua Yu is your sworn brother. Kill him and you will begin your ascension.”

Xi Ping forced a laugh and said “Grandmaster, I have no biological brother but I have already spilt the blood of my sworn brother. He was just pulled up the cliff and is standing over there.”

“You have two choices. Kill Hua Yu or kill me. Either way, Hua Yu will die by your hands. Then, you will become my successor and have no equal in Jiang Hu.”

Xi Ping realized the ingeniousness of his grandmaster. Both Hua Yu and his grandmaster were like family to him. If he kills either in cold-blood, then he would fall into the darkness and walk the path his grandmaster set. His grandmaster has given him a dilemma. Either horn he takes will be sharp. Xi Ping decided to face the bull directly. He faced Hua Yu then Lei Fa and grimly said “Better one life than two.” He faced Lei Gwan to say “Take care of my parents. You are the only one who knows the truth… I’m sorry.”

Xi Ping pounced forward towards Hua Yu utilizing his dragon claw techniques. The already weakened Hua Yu was quickly subdued and ended up with one claw grasping his throat. He looked into the eyes of Xi Ping; those eyes sparkled as if Xi Ping was enjoying this. Hua Yu was shoved against the back of the cliff and was completely defenseless. Xi Ping followed this by pressing the set of poison sealing yudeo points on himself. His friends recognized this and were shocked by his decision. His grandmaster recognized it as well and angrily yelled “You fool!”

Xi Ping felt tremendous power as his full potential was released. He gently lobbed Hua Yu up the cliff then kicked the cliff wall to soar towards his grandmaster. His grandmaster drew a sword from a nearby fighter and attacked Xi Ping. Xi Ping landed and did not move. The sword tip stopped just short of his throat. Xi Ping calmly said “I will die no matter what. These are my last few breaths. You may end it a few short if you wish.”

Grandmaster Jin puffed “Humph. Ungrateful brat, do you think that I am afraid to kill you?”

He applied pressure on the sword blade and it pierced Xi Ping’s neck just enough to draw blood. Jin Xiao Bing looked at Xi Ping. Xi Ping looked right back without fear; he was awaiting death. He quietly said “Jin Xiao Bing, it is over. Grandmaster, you have been like a grandfather to me. I have been unfilial. Please forgive me.”

Grandmaster Jin withdrew his sword and sorrowfully sighed “You have found the middle of the bull’s horns,” before a light trickle of blood ran down his mouth. Jin Xiao Bing turned around and did not move.

Xi Ping felt a surge of energy rage out of control in his body building up in his dantium about to rush upwards. He felt the power explode and travel up his spine, and then it was locked and stuck. A chain had wrapped itself around Xi Ping’s throat and was choking him. It also saved him from fire deviation. Xi Ping turned around to see his sworn brother Chok To down from the cliff and pulling with all his might. Xi Ping understood and was grateful for his brother’s thoughtfulness. Lei Gwan did not understand, she jumped down and clawed Chok To on the shoulder to force him to release Xi Ping. Chok To did not flinch even though the wound was deep. Lei Gwan looked over into Xi Ping’s eyes and understood what he was thinking. She felt embarrassed then shocked when she looked at her hand. The disciples of Jin Xiao Bing were on their knees facing their old and young masters. None of them moved nor made a sound showing their loyalty and discipline.

All eyes were on Xi Ping but Xi Ping felt alone. He felt like he was hanging on a vine above a cliff with two mice gnawing on it. Eventually he will fall to his death in suffocation. If he climbs up and escapes from this noose, he will die from fire deviation. Xi Ping noticed a berry plant. He picked a berry and placed it in his mouth. The berry tasted sweet. His mind became completely calm and was focused entirely on the taste of the berry. Xi Ping stood completely still and his eyes stared ahead. Lei Gwan went forward and held Xi Ping’s hand and felt his pulse. She could not feel any. She looked away and tears began to form in her eyes. Chok To released the whip and slammed the ground in frustration. Mo Xiao Fong floated down and helped Chok To up. She walked over and placed a hand on Lei Gwan’s shoulder before testing Xi Ping’s nose. There was no breath. She felt his heart and did not feel a heartbeat. She sighed and looked around. There were many people but all that could be heard was silence. She cautiously went up to Jin Xiao Bing. He was still standing but was dead. He died just after withdrawing his blade from the fire deviation caused by his sorrow. She motioned for the Lunar Reflection members to leave and closed Xi Ping’s eyes.

Xi Ping’s friends stood around him and decided to bury him in a more suitable location. They could not move him. Hua Yu was very perceptive and placed his ear on Xi Ping’s chest. After what seemed an eternity he said “He is alive. No, he is dead. I think he is alive. How can you tell? I just heard a heartbeat. Really, so where is this phantom heartbeat? I don’t hear anything. There it is again.”

They heard a voice “Of course there is a heartbeat, only dead people don’t have a heartbeat.”

Xi Ping was looking at them like they had gone insane. Chok To and Lei Gwan both took his hand and felt for his pulse. They did not feel any but waited. After a while they picked up one clear and distinct beat. Xi Ping had entered a state of mental calm and meditation. This slowed down his heartbeat significantly and he was able to extinguish the wild qi energy within him. There was indeed an honourable and enduring way to achieve the full potential of the art of demon hunting.

    Epilogue

General Qi Jiguang later went to the Fujian province and set sail to the Penghu Islands. There he pushed the Wo’ Kou pirates back to Taiwan ridding the coasts of the incessant raids and safeguarding the lives of many. Coral sent a small group to go to Taiwan to report on the conditions of the pirates. Lei Gwan traveled with her Coral friends; she preferred the coast and did not want to follow her father in the civil engineering project of extending the Great Wall.

Xi Ping and his friends arrived in Taiwan to witness a battle. They felt it strange since the government forces decided against mounting an invasion. The Wo’ Kou forces were being chased and ran by them without taking notice. Xi Ping looked up to see an army of Japanese samurai along with what appeared to be commoners with farming and fishing equipment chasing the Wo’ Kou. They mistakened Xi Ping and his group for Chinese bandits that dissented into the Wo’ Kou ranks. Seeing that it was a misunderstanding, the Coral members decided against attacking back. The three turtle members formed a solid shell of swords preventing any weapons from entering. The commander recognized that he was dealing with powerful fighters and did not want any of his subordinates to get injured so he called a halt to the fight. The commander walked up and motioned his units to back up. The commander turned his back and asked in a deep voice “Let us determine the outcome of this in a single dual.”

Xi Ping smiled and stepped forward. The commander’s back was turned but he knew that a skilled pugilist was approaching. They both angled their backs towards each other and stood the same way. The commander drew first and he was very fast. Xi Ping had his sword by the commander’s temple before the commander’s blade had fully left its sheath. The commander was shocked and instinctively said “Master?”

Xi Ping looked into the face of the commander, he exclaimed “Father!”

“Xi Ping! Ah Lan, our son is here.”

Cheung Lan appeared and said “Xi Ping, you have grown. We feel awful not to have been by your side.”

“Mother, father is cleared of his crimes. Grandmaster Jin was one who poisoned his lord.”

“You have done well; we discovered that it was him in Japan. The forces sent to kill us were not Japanese samurai but demon clan members. We could not return to China because of your grandmaster’s presence. So we decided to help quell the Wo’ Kou and perhaps establish trade between Japan and China. We also hope to bring the Wo’ Kou back to the flock and end this bloodshed.”

“I have become the leader of the new Yuansun clan. I am introducing reforms to hopefully bring them back into the orthodox societies.”

“You have a bright future ahead. We will continue to take care of things here. Establish and enjoy life in China; we will return once our duties are finished. In life, there are reunions, partings, happiness, and depression. But the same moon in the sky is shared by all.”

Thanks for reading. Story-writing is a lot more flexible than technical reports; don't have to worry about cross-examination. I am planning to start on a much longer story that takes place right before the Yuan dynasty. It will have more depth and variety than this one; so it will be some time before I begin posting.

I hope you have enjoyed reading Eastern Bird as much as I have enjoyed writing it. All of your comments were most welcome and I hope to see your comments again in my next story.
