My 1st impression upon watching trailer:

It will be the first true Chinese "LotR" complete with LotR-type magical xianxia stuff too. Story looks so much like the story of Strider/Aragorn (would-be King/Emperor decides to go off "wandering in the wild" instead). Or at least that's the impression I got from the preview material.

Anyways, I will be watching this alongside NiF2, but obviously a few episodes ahead since NiF2 doesn't air until later...

Thought this was going to be shown on TV. They decided to make it a web series instead. Still watching it, but you know something amiss when they cancel the TV airing after so many months producing the series...

Got bored waiting for ENG subs, so I decided to preview the first Ep.

Ew, it's even worse than first Ep of Princess Agents.

I can see why they made this into a web series as standards are much more lax here.

Can someone tell me what's so good about Tribes and Empires?

Otherwise, I may as well drop the series after the first few Eps I already downloaded...

They didn't show this on TV because the producers doesn't want the content cut to fit on TV. The production value is way higher than Princess Agents. The cinematography, real locations, and costumes are gorgeous. The story is pretty slow to setup the main characters. The first two episodes are about the main character from the tribes, the grown up version of the main characters won't show up till episode 9. You should watch couple more episodes before deciding to drop it. Might also want to wait for eng subs because there are a lot of names and factions to keep track of.

Well, the series has received an 8.2 so far on Douban, which is pretty good:

I guess I was taken back by the primitive tribal behavior in Ep 1 (tribe raiding another tribe). Princess Agents was bad but not this bad in the beginning (they were killing convicted maids).

Anyways, I shall see where this drama leads... but a high rating esp. on Douban is a keeper IMO...

If I recall correctly, in PA, the maids (whether they were criminals or not is beside the point) were being hunted for sport by rich and entitled young men. In Tribes and Empires, one tribe was raiding another tribe in response to a misfortune and in order to survive as vassals paying tribute to a more powerful monarchy. I would not equate the two situations.

That both series started under such gritty and potentially triggering scenes though is a fair observation.

Oh, com'on. How can you compare those two gritty scenes? In PA, the "maids" were given a chance to run for their life. In T&E, most of the ppl didn't even wake up when they were being attacked...

Weakened defenseless women (with the exception of the lead of course) being hunted with weapons hurled at them in a barren wasteland with wild animals isn't giving them much of a chance. The point of allowing them to run was so the rich entitled young masters could experience the thrill of hunting down their "prey." They weren't actually expected to survive the ordeal, hence why the lead was so resented; her survival was seen as a challenge.

I also want to start watching Tribes and Empires...but don't want to experience the agonizing wait for eng subs.

Eh? T&E was licensed by DramaFever. ENG subs up to Ep4 already up on subscene.com the last time I checked...

Anyways, I watched up to Ep 3 now. Wow is all I can say, it does get better.

Ep 4. Lol I couldn't believe it, one moment I was watching a Roman-style Colosseum duel to the death. The next moment it was this Casablanca-style sappy romance drama between Empress&Emperor (I have never seen Casablanca, but you get the idea of some really cheesy romantic tensions between a pair). I wanted to check my eyes. But then, we find out why the Emperor never showed much interest in the Empress coz she's such a scumbag. A+ writing!!

Since Novoland concept actually came from Lord of the Ring...:

There are 30 books written for that universe and there are 7 principle authors that write novels for them. The project was started in early 2000s, inspired from the film Lord of the Rings.
... and T&E is set in that world, here are some stuff I liked from LotR:

Black masked riders on horses = Ring Wraiths

Sword that struck a magical being (Sauron/6th Prince's mom)

Man on a leash in Ep 1 = Gollum

Backbone of T&E is story of would-be king = Aragorn/Strider's story

Some person is really older than they should be coz of a spell (Theoden/6th Prince's mom)

Really liking T&E so far, barring the very first Ep. I hear there's also another big-budget prequel series to T&E being made for release in 2019.

Hey everyone, I'm on Ep 8. And I just wanna say, I'm officially hooked on the drama. Hope the quality can remain consistent to the end. Possibly the best drama I've ever seen (barring the first Ep).

I'm tempted to score it higher than Nirvana in Fire, from what I've seen of T&E so far.

Also want to add this Ep 8: Frodo, you must not touch the sword... the sword is evil!

All J/K aside, anyone notice 6th prince shot off like a nuke missile (nuclear launch) once he grabbed the sword and smoked/atomized the bad guy into pieces? This is what I love about C-drama and C-ent in general. Asians don't like to brag, so they disguise advanced weapons like missiles as something primitive, like a sword or an arrow...

Like for example, this is actually a large missile containing multiple target-able mini-[nuclear] warheads, but used arrows to represent:

Pacing slowed down a bit Ep 9-11. Rating on douban also dropped from 8.2 to 8.0. Still liking the drama so far, btw

(I would still rate it higher than NiF, IMO T&E is geared towards younger audience so it takes itself less seriously)

Why I have faith in T&E:

I have seen various LotR spoofs since last year, the most notable of which was Ice Fantasy.

But unlike those earlier ones, T&E is an attempt to recreate a Chinese version of LoTR and simply not a spoof.

T&E has to follow the LotR formula more closely than those other works, so it's more likely to work as an epic drama.

    Cinematography is really good too.

It would be a lie to say I didn't thoroughly enjoy every single episode (except the first one), even the very slow ones.

Also, really looking forward to that mega-budget prequel set many decades/centuries before T&E...
