Default Do you feel we are ready for self driving cars?

Just wondering what you guys thought about self driving cars since there are pros/cons debates about it. Some people said self driving cars can help the elderly. Then again how will the car respond in hazardous road conditions?

Nope. I would rather stay home or ride public transport that go in a self driving car. I support employment and would not choose to use something that will take away a lot of people's jobs. And what if there is a system malfunction and humans are no longer trained to drive? Seems risky to me and who to sue when something goes wrong?

The elderly can get taxis even though there are a small number of reckless taxi drivers who have slipped through the cracks. I think society needs to do more for the social well-being of the elderly population like organizing volunteer drivers to take them to appointment or social events. At least there is communication between them and the driver in case they forget something and need to turn back or do something else.

Self-driving cars will be useful in controlled environment where everything is more predicted. It is something like driver-less train system where the journey is fixed.

I am all for it if it's proven to be safe. I have nothing against taxi but people should have the freedom to choose what they wanted.

No, I don't think we are. I also don't think I would ride on one.

My next car could be driverless car. My current car is 2009 with about 137,000 km on it. With good care, my car could last for another 10 years if no major accident occurs.

Honestly with the way some of the people around here drive, I'd probably feel safer with self driving cars.

The good thing is car companies will accept responsibility when accident occurs, not the driver. Insurance will be way cheaper as well. However, the car itself and maintenance will be more expensive. The problem of drink and drive will be solved as people can drink and let the car running by itself.

not yet, what would the self driving car do in this scenario:

the car is driving then 10 people decide to jay walk. the car is now too fast to stop, so it can only 1) run the 10 ppl over or 2) swerve and kill the passenger.

Not yet. Too many unpredictable factors. Unless they can make sure that these factors are controlled, I won't ever get in a self-driving car.

I think , we are not ready yet towards self driving car. I guess, it will create more problems in the road since the functions are being carried out by a computer unless people are knowledgeable and efficient enough to learn more about it.
